Na wa for these VOs oh. I don't understand the "academically idle for the past 7 years" thing. Perhaps maybe he/she was being sarcastic sha. Or maybe the VO was confused and thought you finished your BSc in 2008? Yeah I agree that this makes no sense given your age, but it is possible the VO didn't think through it. It appears that the college diploma thing is what threw off the VO. hayqinsbFX: |
@justwise, agents are showing up on the thread o. Do the needful. |
Read @justwise's post on page 67. It contains some very important links. Secondly, make Google your friend and then you can come back to ask more nuanced questions. Thirdly, gradually start reading the thread starting from page 1 of Part 9. crest2j: |
@ayooluwatoni I totally agree with both your points, especially your second point about LOE/SOP. @omonjoe @berexio1 @ayooluwatoni I however think that we should not hyperfocus and over-emphasize on the personal assets and financial status issue. I believe that it is when the VO is not explicitly convinced about the applicant's intentions in Canada that other imperfect aspects of the app start to look glaring. Fixing Purpose of Visit is the biggest elephant in the room. The other reasons matter of course, but a convincing Purpose of Visit could considerably allay the VO's concerns about all the other issues. I strongly believe that an SOP dripping with passion and vision for your future in Nigeria shows very strong professional ties. Such an SOP would have to be super specific... I made my sister write in her SOP very precise descriptions of what she would do in Naija with her Canada MSc. She gave very precise and informed examples of these plans. All over the essay, she kept linking her MSc program to the particular skills she would need to implement those specific plans. Btw, she had a similar study gap as omonjoe... also, she didn't include any study leave letter or property documents or car document or anything of that sort. She had also changed fields, and her job was completely unrelated to her BSc. But we helped the VO understand everything, thru the SOP. It was very time-consuming to write it though... it took a month to get what we thought was perfect. Btw, she did include her bank account statement. Also, I was reading someone else's GCMS notes in the past, and the VO noted that the candidate didn't have strong family/professional/financial ties to Nigeria. This was when I realized/remembered that you could convince the VO through one or any combination of these three ties (not necessarily all three). I think we shouldn't be too formulaic about the application process, as @khalesi noted. In my opinion, the best way to reduce the probability of being delayed (particularly for complex/PGD applicants with a study gap) is to be clear, convincing, and passionate about what exactly it is in Nigeria you want to use your Canada education to impact. Also needed is to clearly & convincingly justify one's past educational & employment trajectory. You would do this in your SOP, and would spell everything else out very clearly. Don't expect the VO to read your mind, yet be concise unless you are a very engaging writer. Finally, earlier in the thread (Parts 7 & 8 ), I remember there were several working applicants (in their mid to late 20s) with bank accounts less than N500k yet still got their TRV. |
Yeah I have mixed views about the boosting your account advice. If you do it, you have to be very careful so that it isn't viewed as money lodgement. @berexio1, how did you fix your issue? Did you just dump money into your account in one fell swoop? Omonjoe: |
Ok makes sense! I had thought of this too, and I totally agree with you... however I think @omonjoe should plug every hole related to Purpose of Visit as well (and with equal or higher priority). Thanks for clarifying. berexio1: |
Hmm... How did you reach the conclusion of $10k CAD? Did you infer this from your GCMS? If so, could you share a snapshot of this section of your GCMS (or a similar GCMS). And how does this address Purpose of Visit? berexio1: |
Your main issue to tackle is Purpose of Visit. Your finances may or may not be an issue... I wouldn't consider this the largest issue. Do you think your SOP was strong? Did you justify why you are specifically going for a PGD and not MSc (I believe this is very important as some VOs might be more suspicious of the motive of PGD applicants given the ease of admission)? In any case both PGD and MSc applicants can get a Purpose of Visit delay, the key issue is that the VO was not convinced that you are a genuine student. If the VO is convinced about Purpose of Visit, they rarely delay the application for other reasons except for insufficient funds. Oh also, did you explicitly link your BSc Elect/Elect and work experience with the Industrial Automation PGD program? You need to make everything crystal clear to the VO as they might know nothing about science and engineering. I would recommend that you don't rush to reapply until you are certain that you have plugged all holes. Omonjoe: |
Oct 5 Conestoga College Online PGD the application is for thesojbro (my brother... not on Nairaland) not thesoj. |
This link should give you tips on getting a supervisor. oomapetra: |
Hmm... There isn't one in part 9. I may have to find a workaround. Btw, thanks for unbanning me. The anti-spam bot didn't like my post. justwise: |
@montrealer Thanks man. Also, I just tried copying @richcasey's links but for some reason when I click on "Quote" a page comes up and says "Topic Locked". Oga @Justwise abeg help unlock @richcasey's posts na. The only way to fully repost the links is by first clicking "Quote" and then either repost or quote it. Also, @Justwise you've been scarce on this thread o! I guess we've been well-behaved sha, so maybe we haven't needed you haha.@Lobolintin, click here to see a bunch of helpful links, one of which should help you access a list of colleges that offer PGD programs in Canada and more. If you are new on the thread CLICK THIS LINK to access a lot of extremely insightful information to help with your school search or TRV app. |
Yes, probably. I think someone posted a while ago about someone else that got their study permit TRV with a small balance on the account. Did your dad include any statement of shares/stocks in the application? This would help considerably as these are liquid assets. It is definitely possible that the VO would give you since your dad's annual income and assets (10m and 40m, respectively) are both high. I don't think you should worry about it any further, at this point the best thing is to just wait and be optimistic (while considering contingency plans) since you have already applied. AverageNed: |
Just read Part 8 (or Part 6, or Part 7). Actually, first read from page 1 of Part9 till this page... this will answer some of your initial questions. And then you may progress to reading Part8. Also, some of your questions like how to get an apartment is something you shouldn't be worried about yet, until after you apply for TRV. Additionally, acquaint yourself with Google as well... it should become your good friend. Solitin40: |
Lol. Thanks for asking. Yeah he and I were preoccupied with it for the past month and half. We submitted it this Monday and he did biometrics the next day. We did online route. The documentation for his application was as perfect as we could make it. Yet, he is a complex applicant because he doesn't have an employment letter... he has been a software developer for four years since NYSC and he didn't register his company (until recently... though we didn't include the recent CAC as it may look fishy) so for proof of what he's been doing, we included attestation of work letters from several of his clients, and also included several descriptive multi-page demos/screenshots of some of the software he's developed. His CV was also detailed & concise about the different software & clients and how he wrote the software. He's really good at software... I think the demos will impress the VO. Most of his clients are small so it's not like he made a lot of money doing it, but he just has a passion for good coding (not just simple websites)... we were transparent about this in the app. In his SOP, we were also open about why he decided to be an independent software developer and not get a job with some big company. I believe the SOP was extraordinarily good (lol... it took so long to perfect it). In it, we were transparent about everything, yet mostly focused on my brother's passions, how he has grown being on his own as a developer since finishing NYSC, and what he plans to do in Naija with the additional training in Canada... if the VO reads the SOP I think his chance of getting approved is like 90%... if the VO doesn't read the SOP then his chances are probably like 35%... gotta be objective lol. In any case, we have a backup plan if Canada doesn't work. I doubt that we would apply again if he doesn't get it. This application was the best we could do. ayooluwatoni: |
No it is not a guaranteed denial. You just have to hope for the VO's generosity. Anything is possible, though your chances are more like 50:50 (or lower) in this situation. But given that it is your dad/parent that is your sponsor, and he seems to have a good source of income and high net-worth assets, the VO could still give you. Don't stress yourself about it. What is done is done. This is what is called a sunk cost that you shouldn't stress yourself worrying about. What you can do is come up with a contingency plan of what do in the case the app isn't approved. So, I'd advise you find a way to boost your dad's account (and/or brokerage/investment accounts) to at least N9m within the next 4-6 weeks. In case the app isn't approved, you would then be able to reapply immediately with sufficient liquid funds. AverageNed: |
Why did you let your dad submit it? What is worth doing is worth doing well, bros. In any case, you can't start a fresh application until you hear back from CIC about the application you just submitted. When did your dad submit the app? Did you tell him about the bank statement balance issue? AverageNed: |
Dang that's messed up I just googled it and I'm reading on a canadavisa.com thread that the same thing happened to someone else and CIC said the initial approval mail was a mistake. In another scenario, the applicant sent in his passport after pp request and after a month the passport cane back without a visa but with an insufficient funds delay. These were both from 2014. It is an exceedingly rare situation. Wow. errandonline: |
Bros, I recently answered a question of yours on the Canada thread and I wanted to throw in my two cents again... I would implore you to not speak of your brother this way. It is a complete lie that intelligence is static (particularly if your bro doesn't have a glaring neurological or brain disorder)...almost anyone can learn anything to whatever extent they desire... the only thing is each person learns best using a different style and at a different pace than everyone else. The onus is on your brother to tirelessly identify the best learning style for him, and to disabuse himself of the thought that he is not intelligent. He needs to break away from this sort of negative self-fulfilling prophecy. Also, your brother just needs a patient tutor/teacher to help him master an exam like TOEFL. Or he could tirelessly practice it himself if you (or someone else) patiently provide him with the right resources, psychological encouragement, and possible learning/thinking strategies. It is obvious that he has little confidence in his ability to learn. But please don't encourage the idea that he just isn't intelligent enough. That must be demoralizing for him to hear, but it seems he has internalized it and now believes it too. Yet, this can be reversed. In any case, the good thing about getting an education in the US is that the system encourages individual students to find their own best way to learn. kwenu: |
Yes, several people this thread have talked about it. It is true. Read backward and you will confirm this. nam16: |
Since you still have time to apply for admission and then TRV (temporary resident visa), read from page 1 of Part 8 (to the end) and you will be best positioned to answer your current and future questions, and you will be able to put together an excellent TRV application. Thank me later. In the mean time, yes you don't need TOEFL to get a visa, and for the most part the Canadian embassy doesn't do in-person interviews for student applicants. kwenu: |
Read about @Graviton2's case or ask him for his opinion. He is/was an undergraduate TRV applicant who was delayed on insufficient funds, twice. I believe he has fixed the issues now. I would recommend you have at least N9-10m in your sponsor's account... that would cover at least two years of your total annual fees (2*[$20k+$10k]=$60k=N9m)... the trend we see is that VOs like to see that amount for undergraduate applicants. You also could consider getting a cosponsor. AverageNed: |
Congrats bro! Soooo happy for you man. You have been immensely valuable to people on this thread and I'm glad that your visa has been approved. Based on the informative quality of all your comments on here, I could imagine that your first application was well-prepared as well, but for the VO who nit-picked on the liquid funds issue. Congrats again. ayooluwatoni:I so agree with the bolded. I really can't stand it when people feel they can use prayer as a substitute for a high quality application. Naija would be a better country if more people did their absolute best, as opposed to primarily expecting prayers to fix issues they could tackle themselves. |
Yes, proof of financial support documents. iykedare: |
Both situations occur. With paper route, some get approval mail while some don't (even though their visa was approved). lamama1: |

It means it's time to party! ![]() Read the approval mail carefully (there should be a PDF attached), and you will understand it means that your visa has been granted. Congrats. ajaereogechi: |
bosypumpin:Once again, this is misinformation. I already posted this CIC link that states that you must be enrolled and be a full-time student before you can legally work. Starting work before initial enrollment is therefore illegal. Having an SIN number is not what exclusively determines if you are legally authorized to work... CIC's website is written in clear English... I don't understand why you are propagating this misinformation. If you disagree, then show proof from CIC. bosypumpin:Same situation. It doesn't matter. It is illegal. No one's opinion on here (including mine) trumps whatever is on CIC's website. You do realize that if too many Nigerians abuse the Canadian student visa system, they may change their visa application policies to be even more unfavorable. |
Please take this down o. Your essay will be plagiarized. You are welcome to send me a PM instead. I once read someone's essay (name withheld) and I realized that he had copied exactly two long paragraphs from one of the essays that were posted on here. Don't be the next person whose essay gets plagiarized. Also, it seems you posted it in the wrong section. iykedare: |
Electrical Engineering (or a synonymous course such as "Electronics Systems Engineering" ) is a competitive course to be admitted into for graduate school because there are many other sharp applicants with good GPAs. So yeah, apply to like four schools and make sure your application SOP is on point. You will get an admission if you put together a good application, but just don't assume that you will be admitted because you meet the minimum requirements. Well, also apply to University of Saskatchewan, and reapply to University of Regina but this time with a much improved application. Before you reapply to URegina, perhaps you could email the program coordinator asking if they would consider your application if you reapplied again with a better application. You should also apply to schools in other provinces if there are no other schools that offer your course at Saskatchewan. chucksbadt: |
You are welcome. Yes, a PGDE in Mathematics is very clearly related to a B.Tech. in Statistics. ![]() CassieV: |
