Hmmm... I'm surprised about your TRV denial (particularly given your full funding, recent graduation, and first class grade) as you don't have a study gap nor an employment gap. Please respond to my question about your SOP. You are welcome to PM me, but my response may be slow. I and/or @osemigho/@austinpee should be able to take a look at your SOP. My response will likely be super slow so I suggest you start with @osemigho or @austinpee cos they'd probably respond sooner than I. PS: Modify your post to delete your number. Unfortunately my day is super swamped and I am limited on time to chat on phone. Thx. I am almost certain that you can put forth a much better application next time, if you are willing to spend a ton of time sharpening your application. Abdon01: |
Abdon01:Wow... sorry for the delay. As @victory2017 said, someone with your profile has a high chance of approval. What's your profile? When did you finish BSc and NYSC? What have you been doing since then? What's your work experience? Etc. Also, could you give a two-sentence summary of what you wrote in your SOP? I'm just trying to figure out why you got refused so that we can avoid same next time. @osemigho @kalohenic @yemdogg @austinpee abeg come to the rescue. |
Hey bro! We miss you on the Canada thread. Congrats on getting your USA student visa! (I just looked through your old posts and see you got approved last month) ProfOjah1234: |
Oseni007:Congrats bro. Wow!!!! This is an incredible story. |
You are right. It is technically possible to switch from a visiting to a student visa. I however don't believe that it's recommended for Nigerian applicants to do so. Last year I read three GCMS notes of Nigerian applicants who tried this and the consistent observation by the CIC Los Angeles Office was that those applicants lied about their purpose of visit to Canada when they applied for the visiting visa in Nigeria. The applications were denied. I'm not saying that it isn't possible to change status from visiting to student -- it is -- but it would be very difficult for a Nigerian applicant (a country whose applicants are known to overstay visas or try to switch visas in order to not go back home) to convince the VO why s/he is not willing to go back home to do so. I also agree with you that it is possible to switch from visiting to student while in the US. About a decade ago USCIS used to approve many of these applications but now it is extremely difficult to be successful at doing so particularly for applicants from countries known to overstay their visit visa or known to get a visit visa and find ways to convert it (e.g. Nigerians) while in the US. There are exceptions of course, and no two applicants are the same. Yet I wouldn't recommend for a Nigerian with a visit visa to Canada attempt to do a risky change to student status in Canada. Once denied, the probability of getting the student visa in Nigeria/Ghana diminishes (the Accra/Lagos VO now knows that you are the kind of person that went to Canada on the premise of a visit visa but once in Canada changed your purpose of visit). cc: Yomalicious, Canadiannurse jnyuwa02: |
DereI:It is illegal to work off campus if you are not yet enrolled in school. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-offcampus.asp Your friend has been admitted to school but is not enrolled as her session hasn't started yet. To be eligible to work legally, the international student has to have been enrolled in school already. Your friend is exploiting a loophole, but it is not legal. The more people exploit this loophole, the more immigration officers at the POE will scrutinize those who show up in Canada months before school begins. This could affect your friend when she applies for PGWP. Not worth the risk. |
Congratulations! You are a kindred spirit, and I am elated for you. I responded to your PM in December last year knowing that you are very helpful to others on this forum, knowing that you are deeply curious, knowing that you have a strong academic profile, and (after seeing your strong research proposal) knowing that you have a strong probability of both getting full funding and a visa at first try. This prediction turned out to be spot on! I am very happy that I had the privilege to walk with you in this journey of getting full funding and getting a visa approval. These are happy times for you. I wish I could take major credit for your getting full funding or visa approval, but no . When you in December shared your research proposal with me, it was already strong and impressive, this was when I realized that it'd be pleasant to work with you to maximize the outcomes of both your admission/funding application, and the subsequent visa application. It is applicants like you that motivate me to contribute to this forum!Go to Canada and succeed, bro! Your future is bright. Osemigho: |
RealObserver:I think this post of yours is excessively belligerent. More opinions provide an opportunity to refine each other's views and also to learn from or intellectually challenge one another (in an amicable way). If you don't agree with someone, you don't need to insult him/her. Let him express his opinion even if you disagree, the best you can do is make your points and let the thinking reader decide who is making more sense. Or better yet, a good natured debate will inspire the thinking reader to do more research for himself/herself. The attitude of "I know more than you, therefore sit down" demonstrated in your post above is exactly what we as Nigerians need to do less of if we want to have a flying chance -- as individuals or as a country -- of succeeding in a world that chiefly thrives off of analytical thinkers, good communicators, and leaders worth following. Cheers. |
GermanDreamer:I don't agree with the black-and-white nature of this post. No candidate is the same. It is possible to convince the VO of a career change if the candidate has a compelling reasons to do so, particularly if said reasons are corroborated with a lot of evidence (e.g. volunteer activities, or unpaid freelance work, or credible personal research with citations showing deep knowledge about the new field, etc). Having said that, I agree that a change in career should not be taken lightly when it comes to applying for a TRV. If you read back to Parts 5-12, you will see that several candidates have done so successfully. Having said this, I would suggest that only applicants with well thought-out reasons (with corroborating evidence) for changing career paths to do so. |
manlikegb:Three and half pages, 1.3 spacing, Arial font size 11, one inch page margins. In most cases I am not an advocate for SOPs longer than two pages, except for complex applicants about whom the VO needs a lot more explanation and context. Even in these cases, the SOP should be engaging from the start and very easily readable otherwise the VO would just glaze through it. If the SOP starts off by rambling then the likelihood of it being fully read, given its length, reduces considerably. A long SOP should not be laborious to read, otherwise it would hurt more than help. As a final thought, a long SOP with lots of explanations should also have different pieces of evidence in the application to corroborate some of the explanations. The mantra is to make everything very easy for the VO. If the VO has to make guesses about anything ambiguous in your application or SOP, s/he is likely to guess not in your favor. |
She said that @thesoj quoted the person, not that @thesoj said so. Bros, reread her post and chill small na. jnyuwa02: |
Hmm on the contrary, I don't have any reason to believe that CIC has a hard quota for student visas issued. Now there's always a probability that they have a soft quota but this is still mere speculation. CanadianNurse: |

jnyuwa02:I can't dispute your comment except the bolded; perhaps you were referring to students with an expired F1 visa applying for a Canadian visa? If this is the case then you are correct, because an in-status F1 student with an expired visa is still a legal US resident (assuming the student has a valid I-20 and is an active student in SEVIS). An expired F1 visa is not out-of-status nor illegal in the eyes of US immigration. However, a B1/B2 visitor that overstays his/her 90-180 days (depends on what the immigration officer stamps on his/her I-94 at the port of entry) has an almost 100% chance of being denied by most (if not all) foreign embassies in the US, including Canada. Also, it's the Los Angeles Canadian Consulate that adjudicates visa applications from foreigners residing in the US. I'd recommend that readers cross-check whatever they read on this thread with what's on the official website of CIC or USCIS. You, and only you, will face the music if you misinterpret or absorb incorrect information from this forum. |

I stand to be corrected, but I don't think it is accurate to say that @Omoarukheo's application has no chance of getting approved. While I get the point you may have been trying to make, none of us here are VOs and we don't know enough about the applicant to make a categorical statement that s/he technically has no chance of being approved. I do agree with you that given the recent spate of PGD denials his/her application may not have a high chance of approval unless s/he puts together an application that is very convincing. michV: |
1. It can fly. It really just depends on how well you can convince the VO. The fact that you are fresh out of school might help you. BUT you will need to convince the VO with a really good SOP, and strong arguments and/or evidence of your reasons to want to do a business PGD in Canada. A business PGD is related to banking and finance but make sure you are crisp and clear as to why exactly you want to go to Canada when you can also study the same exact course in Nigeria. I repeat, you will need to cross a high hurdle in order to convince the VO that you need to go to far away Canada to study a business PGD course that is easily obtainable in Nigeria. So please keep this in mind when you are putting together your application. Your application can be successful but it needs to be extremely convincing! 2. Your discharge certificate is not a prerequisite. Just provide sufficient evidence that you are doing NYSC, in addition to your current employment documents. Omoarukheo: |
Yes it is possible to switch to an MBA as you already have two years of business experience. To convince the VO about why you want to get an MBA, describe the role that both your mech eng education and banking experience played in shaping this desire. In the SOP you can describe what business opportunities you see in Nigeria and how someone like you with both a mechanical engineering background and a business training would be ideal to pursue them. Frame your application so that the VO sees both your engineering education and business experience as complementary to your career goals. Edited: the other commenters are correct that it would be easier to convince the VO if you applied with a mechanical engineering master's admission. I feel the MBA one is doable too but you would have to do a lot of convincing. blizz411: |
Some of the major differences between teaching/research in Naija and Canada (well I schooled in the US but c'est la meme chose) are: 1. The emphasis will be on your ability to think independently & creatively, not on your ability to memorize and regurgitate 2. You will be expected to be able to clearly describe your nuanced & complex ideas verbally and in writing 3. You will be free (and even encouraged) to ask many questions from and even challenge your research supervisor and professors (unlike Naija) 4. Your research supervisor will expect you to eventually know more than him/her in your area of research 5. You will be expected to take initiative, not always waiting for the advisor to tell you what to do 6. You will be expected to be able to read and digest journal papers quickly (don't worry this is a learned skill, you'll get better at it over time) The items above may sound intimidating, but don't worry you'll get better over time as long as you are focused and committed and are the curious unrelenting type. Be free to ask questions of your peers who are better at some things than you. Don't be intimidated by other international or Canadian students who may initially appear better than you. With strategic hard work, you can catch up fast and be competitive with (or even way better than) them. I say this from experience and observation. Ayoola03: |
Was the info the agent gave you by word of mouth? Or did s/he show you the official notification from CIC? Most of us on here are skeptical about agents, for various reasons. Many applicants have come to this forum to tell that they've been banned by CIC because they allowed their agent to omit (or fill in false) information on their behalf. My suggestion: ask the agent for the letter from CIC. All the required info is on there. AYOT12: |
I suggest you consider emailing the school(s) directly. They will provide better responses than we can. Moley22: |
ademcoboy:Congrats to your friend, and it's great to see your very high CGPA. I'd suggest you apply to several schools, not just UofT... they get many competitive applicants... a high CGPA doesn't guarantee admission. As CGPA is just one of many criteria for admission, be sure to put together a strong SOP and/or research statement. You are welcome. olugere: |
Hi @tommee, I am so sorry but I am extremely busy these days and can't review SOPs. There are other people on here that would be able to help you capably. If you plan to reapply with the post bacc diploma, I would strongly suggest that you don't do this. The burden of evidence on you will be extremely high. tommee: |
olugere:In theory a visa can be granted for an eight-month program. ...What is the probability of using this graduate certificate program to further my studies in Canada?I suggest you go for Express Entry. With your two degrees and your six years of experience in energy, it will be difficult to convince the VO that a graduate certificate is a step up for you. You are likely to get a "purpose of visit" denial. I am not a VO however and you would know best how to convince a VO that this is the right program for you. An MBA program might be more persuasive, particularly an MBA program that has has a focus on the energy business sector. I'd still suggest Express Entry sha. What document do you think I can put together to get a visa bearing in mind that money is not so availableIf the money isn't available, the only alternative is to go for a program with funding, or find another sponsor. There's a near-zero chance of getting an approval if you don't have access to liquid funds equivalent to a minimum of your annual tuition plus an additional CAD10k. And these days (for visa purposes) you need to pay the fees beforehand or have the money in a convertible currency (e.g. USD, CAD, Euro, GBP, etc) or show proof that you will be able to transfer your Naira out of Nigeria (given the tight FX policies on the Naira by the CBN). Do we have anybody processing the school tooYou will process the school admission yourself. The process is straightforward actually, as the information is on each school's website. Please do not use an agent, especially for the visa. |
