Inside El Salvador’s hellhole prisons where ANYONE can be jailed with phone call & packed like sardines with gangsters Horrifying images show thousands of violent skinhead gangsters from the country’s main gangs, MS-13 and Barrio 18, crammed into an inescapable mega-prison. Pictures show rows and rows of prisoners sitting with their hands behind their shaved heads at the high-tech prison. Other images reveal gang members stripped down to only white shorts running through the facility. Meanwhile, prison officers armed with assault rifles are guarding the inmates. Amnesty International’s Irene Cuellar spoke to The Sun about El Salvador’s state of emergency and the mass incarceration. She said: “Right now, we have the highest incarceration rate in the country – in the world. “In El Salvador, almost 2 per cent of its population are in jail.” But Irene explained how among those captive are those who face life behind bars without any proof they were a part of a crime – due to anonymous tips. She continued: “Most of them have not been found guilty. They are still under this legal status that is pre-trial detention.” El Salvadorians may be fearing any enemies as being arrested and thrown in prison via “criminal association” has become a common practice. If your employer is still paying you below N70k per month, you may wish to report them. |
The Federal Government has issued a stern warning to private-sector employers, stressing that paying below the newly established N70,000 minimum wage could lead to imprisonment. Speaking at the 13th Annual General Meeting of the Employers Association for Private Employment Agencies of Nigeria in Ikeja, Lagos, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Kachollom Daju, represented by John Nyamali, Director of Employment and Wages, stated, “The minimum wage is now a law, and as a result, it is a punishable crime for any employer to pay less than N70,000 to any of its workers. Emphasizing the necessity of the updated wage to address current economic conditions, the government asserted that no Nigerian worker, whether in public or private employment, should earn less than this minimum. “The private employment agencies should make it compulsory in any contract they take from their principal that their workers should not earn less than the minimum wage. The least paid worker in Nigeria should earn N70,000, and I think that should be after all deductions. “The minimum wage is a law, and you can be jailed if you fail to implement it. The Federal Government is committed to ensuring that the least paid worker goes home with N70,000.” Responding to the government’s directive, President of the Employers Association for Private Employment Agencies of Nigeria, Dr. Olufemi Ogunlowo, called for clarity on whether the N70,000 minimum wage applies net or gross, urging the government and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to address any ambiguities in the Act. “We are already committed to the minimum wage and providing decent jobs for Nigerians while preventing the exploitation of human resources,” Ogunlowo affirmed. Chairperson of the NLC, Lagos State chapter, Funmilayo Sessi, underscored the impact of economic challenges on workers’ incomes, urging private employers to promptly implement the N70,000 minimum wage. “The N70,000 isn’t sufficient in today’s economic realities. Once the consequential adjustment is finalized, all private employment agencies must begin paying their workers the N70,000 minimum wage,” Sessi insisted. “The NLC in Lagos State will ensure strict enforcement, and EAPEAN should avoid any conflict with the NLC regarding the minimum wage.” https://dailypostngr.com/2024/09/minimum-wage-private-employers-paying-below-n70000-risk-jail-fg/

Like when Buhari messed up the economy and begged Nigerians to forgive and forget….just like that. I won’t be surprised if we also receive a ‘Forgive & Forget’ request from ‘Emilokan’ later. Well, there’s always room for forgiveness. It is no doubt a sign of humility to beg for forgiveness, but it’s good to work hard to undue any damages caused’ by our actions or inactions as we beg for forgiveness. |
Former Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, on Saturday, urged Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, to forgive him of any past wrongs. He publicly sought forgiveness during a goodwill message at the banquet celebrating Igbinedion’s 90th birthday in Benin. Senator Oshiomhole who described Igbinedion as a good father, lauded the elder statesman’s contributions to society. Seeking atonement, he said, “You brought together people from all parts of the country; North, South, East, and West and across political and religious divides.” Acknowledging the support he received from Igbinedion during his political career, he said, “I want to publicly acknowledge your support for me in 2007 and 2008, without which I might never have become the governor of Edo State. “As a Catholic, I want to confess that I might have done some things I shouldn’t have done as governor. “At 90, it is only right that I ask for your forgiveness for any of my actions that may have irritated you.” He continued, “I have always looked for one opportunity to say to the Esama of the universe that I am sorry for any of the things that I said knowingly or unknowingly or any of the things that I did that a son should never have done to a father. “On your 90th birthday, I ask for your forgiveness, and I pray that you grant it.” More… https://dailypostngr.com/2024/09/forgive-my-actions-oshiomhole-appeals-to-igbinedion/

'In the first quarter of 2024 alone (in just 3 months), N7.71 trillion was added to the already ever-expanding debt stock.' This is serious! |
Nigeria’s debt for the first time in its history has become a course for concern. This new alarming development for Africa’s largest economy is due to its increased debt-to-GDP ratio coupled with its high debt service-to-revenue ratio. A recent report published last week denotes that the country’s debt-to-GDP ratio is now over 50%. Nigeria’s Debt Management Office recently released a report detailing the country’s total public debt stock. The report showed that Nigeria’s current total outstanding domestic debt stands at N65,646,263.25, while its total outstanding external debt stands at N56,024,618.24. Total debt amounts to N121,670,881.49. According to Nairametrics, the country’s total GDP was N229.9 trillion in nominal terms towards the end of last year, yet it widened at a rate of only 2.74% in real terms. Thus, the country’s debt-to-GDP ratio has surpassed 50% for the first time. This new development leaves little room for Nigeria to acquire more loans at a time when the country’s economy is at its most vulnerable. With a lower debt-to-GDP ratio, Nigeria typically spends a smaller proportion of its national budget on interest payments. Since the previous administration which lasted 8 years, Nigeria’s debt has been on the rise. The 8 years encapsulating the aforementioned administration, spanning 2015 to 2023 saw the country’s debt rise from N12.6 trillion to N97.3 trillion. This would mean that a debt of N10.6 trillion was incurred annually on average. However, in the first quarter of 2024 alone, N7.71 trillion was added to the already ever-expanding debt stock, allowing the country’s debt to cross a threshold typically seen as unsustainable. The Tinubu administration recently acquired a $500 million loan from the World Bank, with the promise to get an additional $2.25 billion. Amongst Africa’s largest economies, Nigeria has always boasted a relatively low debt-to-GDP ratio compared to countries like Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa, which all have 70.1% 84.9%, and 72.2% respectively. While these countries have considerably larger debt-to-GDP ratios than Nigeria, Nigeria’s capacity to satisfy debt service commitments has always been hampered by its high debt service-to-revenue ratio. Oga cooperate o....whether guilty or not. Go and explain. EFCC isn't joking No one is above the law |
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has threatened to invite the Nigerian Military to effect the arrest of the immediate-past governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello. EFCC reportedly invaded the Abuja residence of Bello on Wednesday to arrest him but was met with stiff resistance from the former state Governor. According to reports, Bello may have been hiding in the Kogi State Government House under the immunity of Governor Ahmed Ododo, his successor, who is covered with Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The EFCC has been hunting for Bello, to arrest him over allegation of financial mismanagement while in office as governor. During the proceedings on Thursday, Counsel to EFCC, Mr Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, told the court that the commission will drag Bello before the court to face his trial, even, if it means engaging the military to get him. He said, “We may have to invite the military to move Yahaya Bello out of where he is hiding. “We may have to engage the military to force him out because immunity does not cover him where he is hiding.” More.. https://dailypostngr.com/2024/04/breaking-we-may-have-to-use-the-military-to-arrest-yahaya-bello-efcc/

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has reacted to the release of the abducted pupils of LEA Primary School, Kuriga, Chikum Local Government Area. Spokesperson of the forum, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, in a statement, noted that the incident is another sad reminder of the need for improved security measures. Suleiman said though the release of 137 schoolchildren should be celebrated, it should serve as a “wake-up call for all of us.” While calling for an end to the mass abductions, the forum said President Bola Tinubu has failed to secure the lives of the children and other residents. The statement reads in part: “The Northern Elders Forum firmly declares that enough is enough. The safety and security of our children should never be compromised or subject to negotiation. “It is unacceptable for Nigerians, particularly those in the northern region, to continue living under such insecure conditions. “Unfortunately, just months into the Tinubu administration, there have already been clear signs of failure in providing the vital aspects of security of life and property to citizens. This situation is deeply concerning and requires immediate attention from our leaders. “While we celebrate the return of the abducted Kuriga schoolchildren, we must also recognise this event as a wake-up call for all of us. “We cannot afford to become complacent in the face of such acts of violence and disregard for human life. As elders, it is our duty to protect and nurture the next generation. “We also call for accountability and swift action from our leaders to address the security challenges our communities are facing.” https://dailypostngr.com/2024/03/tinubu-showing-signs-of-failure-northern-elders-react-to-release-of-kaduna-pupils/

Delta North senator, Ned Nwoko, has said that he received more than N1 billion for constituency projects in the 2024 budget. Nwoko corroborated Senator Ali Ndume’s claims that the allocation of resources to the legislators often varies based on the magnitude of their constituency projects, indicating that it’s not uncommon for some, including himself, to receive larger amounts. “Senators get what they lobby for, not because they have the right to it. Everybody just goes about doing what they can do for their constituencies and senatorial districts,” Nwoko said on a podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye. “A better approach would have been for senatorial uniformity. So if they say that everyone should get about N1 billion, be it. But this way, you rely on your weight and contacts to see what you can get for your people. “We are not talking about money for the senators. This is for projects within our senatorial districts. If you have road, water, or training programmes, all should aggregate to a particular amount,” he added. Asked if he got as much as N1 billion in allocation, the senator replied, “Of course, I did. That’s why I am who I am. But these are projects for my people.” Nwoko’s revelation is coming amid the recent controversy of budget padding alleged by Senator Abdul Ningi of the 2024 budget with an extra N3.7 trillion, a fund not tied to any extra project. While the senate has denied any wrongdoing, some senators have come out to clarify the amount allocated to them for constituency projects in their various districts. Naija my country! Private universities springing up like mushrooms in the country There should be adequate checks in the beginning to ensure proper accreditation |
The Federal Government says it will commence investigations into the award of fake degree certificates by some private universities in Nigeria. The move follows the outcome of an investigation by a journalist which uncovered certificate racketeering in neighbouring Benin Republic and Togo. No fewer than 107 private universities were established in the last 15 years. The Inter-Ministerial Investigative Committee on Degree Certificate Milling set up by the Federal Government would be examining “whether or not private universities established in the last 15 years have in place prescribed facilities, appropriate management structure, adequate funding of programmes, requisite state, and nature of the staff – full-time, contract, adjunct, visiting and other types.” The committee noted that the probe was “without prejudice to the periodic accreditation exercise of the National Universities Commission.” “Memoranda from the general public are, therefore, solicited to provide information to the committee to help it make appropriate recommendations to address the menace in line with its terms of reference,” the committee said. In his investigative report published late last year, Daily Nigerian journalist Audu had narrated how he obtained a degree within six weeks from Benin Republic and even proceeded to embark on the mandatory youth service under the National Youth Service Corps scheme in the country. Reacting, the Federal Government, on January 9, 2024, said it would launch an investigation into private universities established in the last 15 years. The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, made this known in Abuja while inaugurating the Inter-Ministerial Committee on fake degrees and activities of degree mills in the country. A suit seeking to compel Igbos to exit Nigeria has been struck out. It was struck out by Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The suit was filed by a Coalition of Northern Groups seeking the exit of Igbos in the South East out of Nigeria. The suit by the group of elders and politicians from the North, led by Nastura Shariff, Balarabe Rufa’i, Abdul-Aziz Sulaiman and Aminu Adam was thrown out by the Judge following the persistent absence of the plaintiffs in court to establish their case. When the matter came up, none of the plaintiffs was in court and they were not represented by lawyers. Justice Ekwo, after going through the case file, discovered that the Northern groups have not been coming to court since 2022 till date and had no legal representation. In a brief ruling, the Judge held that from all indications, the plaintiffs have abandoned their own suit. Justice Ekwo therefore struck out the case for want of diligent prosecution. The Northern group had filed the case asking the court to compel the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives to hasten the exit of the southeastern region out of Nigeria. They pleaded that this should be done before the conclusion of the amendment of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution. The secession request was contained in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/538/2021 instituted by the group of elders and politicians from the North. In the suit, they said allowing the Igbo to exit Nigeria would end violence and destruction in the South-East. They also explained that this would stop the repeat of the 1967-1970 Civil War in Nigeria that led to wanton destruction of lives and property. The groups also said this would put an end to the agitations by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, led by Nnamdi Kanu. They prayed for, among others, a declaration that combined effect of the provisions of Section 4 of the Nigerian Constitution and Articles 1, 2, and 20 (1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act 2004, “is empowered to set in motion a framework for a referendum to allow the south-eastern region of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to decide on their bid for self-determination.” They also urged the court to order the second, third and fourth defendants (the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly) “to provide a framework that will pave way for the self-determination of the south-eastern states so as to leave the geographical entity called Nigeria before any further step is taken to further amend the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” “The constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria can be further amended at any time after the question of self-determination must have been resolved by Nigerians,” the plaintiffs said. https://dailypostngr.com/2024/03/court-strikes-out-suit-by-northern-groups-seeking-to-force-igbos-out-of-nigeria/
