CelebritiesRe: Pastor Under Fire For Claiming Mr Ibu Died At 62 For Not Serving God by Thissystem(op): 6:42pm On Mar 03, 2024
We certainly need to use our time, energy, and all, to serve God faithfully, for He deserves it. But that ‘Pastor’s’ suggestive judgmental comment and comparison, especially at this time of mourning, is definitely not good!

Those who have some followers should especially be mindful of their statements and choose their words wisely.

Fortune Makarios, a Nigerian pastor, has come under fire on social media for implying that late star, Mr Ibu died because he did not serve God.

The young pastor took to Facebook and contrasted Pastor Adeboye, who is 82 years old, to Mr Ibu, who died at the age of 62.

He questioned what his admirers and followers learned from this and cautioned them to live their lives in service of God.

The clergyman went on to pray against untimely death.

He wrote,

“The Man on the left is a Pastor and He is Celebrating His 82-year-old Birthday today.

The brother on the right is a comedian and He just died at 62 today

What do you learn from this?

Use your Life to Serve GOD.
UNTIMELY DEATH SHALL NOT BE YOUR PORTION IN JESUS NAME”.

In response, Daddy Freeze, Mofe Duncan, and other netizens blasted the clergyman’s statement.

Daddy Freeze wrote, “Yet Adeboye’s 42-year-old son who was also a pastor kpai 20 years younger than Mr Ibu. Let’s bring our senses before creating unhinged narratives“

Mofe Duncan wrote, “But what is this one saying? Just use your thumbs to your rubbish!!!

"Tinubu ruling Nigeria Like a Military Dictator, talking to citizens like a philosopher king – APC Chieftain"

Salihu Mohammed Lukman, a former National Working Committee (NWC) member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has expressed his disapproval of President Bola Tinubu's approach to governance.

Lukman accused the President of managing the nation's affairs like a military dictator due to an alleged shutting down of the party structures and posing like a king with absolute knowledge of the challenges bedevilling the country.

He made the statement on Saturday, March 2, 2024, where he also accused his party of shortchanging Nigerians due to the level of poverty, hunger, insecurity and high cost of living.

Lukman, a former national vice chairman (North West) of the APC, warned that the prevailing situation in the country is not only a threat to Tinubu's second term but may also lead to the decimation of the ruling party if not quickly addressed.

According to the chieftain, the incumbent President and his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, had rubbished the essence of the merger that birthed APC in 2013 by inflicting pain on Nigerians.

“What Nigerians are having today wasn’t what was promised at all. The most disturbing reality is that the current economic hardship is produced during the first term of President Asiwaju Tinubu, with no end in sight. Does it then mean that President Asiwaju Tinubu is not interested in second term? Certainly not.

“If he is interested in second term, why is he managing affairs of government like a military dictator, shutting down the structures of the party and talking down to citizens like a philosopher king who has absolute knowledge of what will produce possible happiness for citizens?

“Unless the objective is to secure second term by other means and not votes of electorate, there can not be any logical reasoning. Could that be the reason for the newfound love with some identified political mercenaries who were strongly opposed to the election of President Asiwaju Tinubu? How successful could they be?

“If military governments with all their recruited mercenaries could fail to guarantee their survival how could anyone imagine that mercenaries could win second term for the President Asiwaju?” Lukman asked.

Cryptocurrency giant Binance Holdings Ltd has refuted claims that it is in discussions with the Nigerian government regarding potential fines of up to $10 billion. This contradicts the earlier statement made by Bayo Onanuga in an interview with the BBC on Friday.

Onanuga, the special adviser on information and strategy to President Bola Tinubu, who according to a BBC report on Friday, said that the Nigerian government had imposed a $10 billion fine on Binance in an attempt to salvage the value of the naira, later said his words were misinterpreted by the media.

According to a Binance official quoted by Peoples Gazette, “We recently discussed ways to resolve issues with Nigeria, but we did not hear any demand for $10 billion.”

The Cayman Islands-based company clarified that it is not entertaining talks with the Nigerian government either to restore its recently cut-off services or release its executives, who are being held over alleged involvement in manipulation leading to the collapse of the naira and subsequent economic repercussions.

“Our aim is to chart a good relationship with the government and the people of Nigeria. We want to see our services restored in Nigeria very soon, but we have no intention of paying fines for personnel or services,” Binance said.

Bayo Onanuga responded to Binance’s position, stating that his earlier statement to the BBC had been misrepresented in the media.

He clarified that he never asserted the company had been informed about the fines or that the $10 billion figure was conclusively determined by Nigerian regulators.

“I said our government may impose heavy fines on Binance for what happened,” Onanuga explained. “I never said Binance had been informed about the fines or that it would definitely be $10 billion.”

“I only said the amount may be imposed, which is because nothing has been finalised yet,” Mr Onanuga said, placing repeated emphasis on the uncertainties around the fines.

Mr Onanuga, a media aide to President Bola Tinubu, had accused the cryptocurrency platform of aiding those fixing the Nigerian exchange rate to sabotage the economy.

“Binance platform harbours people who fix the exchange rate which quickly affects the Nigerian economy for the time when Nigeria is trying to stabilize the economy,” Mr Onanuga told BBC.

“The platform fixes the exchange rate for the country and it is an illegal rate. The CBN is the only authority that can fix the exchange rate for the country,” he added.

Onanuga accused Binance of profiting substantially from “illegal transactions” in Nigeria, causing significant losses to the nation.

Science/TechnologyWorld’s Deadliest Animal Attack Saw Crocodiles Eat 500 Soldiers Alive by Thissystem(op): 8:33pm On Mar 01, 2024
THE world’s deadliest crocodile attack saw 500 soldiers eaten alive in “a cacophony of hell”.

The “Ramree Island massacre” is considered by many to be the worst crocodile attack in history as roughly 100 of the reptilian beasts set upon unsuspecting troops.

The nightmare took place in January 1945 as British soldiers fought in Burma, now Myanmar, in south east Asia during the height of World War 2.

They’d just pushed back 1,000 enemy Japanese troops into a swampy mangrove jungle as war raged on, with both sides locked in a brutal battle.

But while men on both sides were desperately trying to survive each other’s attacks, a third party soon would soon take centre stage.

Unfortunately for the retreating Japanese soldiers, they were completely unaware of the horror that was about to occur.

Roughly 100 crocodiles lay in wait, “alerted by the din of warfare and smell of blood,” according to Naturalist Bruce Stanley Wright, who claimed to be present at the chilling scene.

“With the ebb of the tide, the crocodiles moved in on the dead, wounded, and uninjured men who had become mired in the mud,”he added.

Vultures would also arrive at dawn to clean up what the crocodiles had left, the veteran claimed.

PoliticsEconomic Crisis: MTN Nigeria Posts ₦137 Billion Loss Amidst Naira Devaluation by Thissystem(op):
MTN Nigeria faced a challenging year in 2023, as the telecoms giant reported a loss after tax of ₦137.0 billion, a huge contrast to the ₦348.7 billion profits recorded in 2022.

The net foreign exchange loss for 2023 compared to 2022 was N740.434 billion, showing a YoY increase of +804.93%, as opposed to N81.822 billion in the previous year. However, revenue grew by 22.7% from N2.01trn to N2.47trn.

This is contained in the company’s audited financial results for the year ended 31 December 2023.

According to Karl Toriola, MTN Nigeria CEO the telecom giant witnessed a very challenging operating environment characterised by rising inflation, currency devaluation and foreign exchange shortages, complicated by geopolitical disruptions and cash shortages in Q1.

MTN says it expects 2024 to be a challenging year due to the rising inflation and devaluation of the naira. In January 2024, the inflation rate reached 29.9%, while the exchange rate has further devalued to N1582/$ as of 26 February 2024. “This is anticipated to put additional pressure on consumers, the cost of doing business and further potential forex losses,” it said.

CrimeNigeria Ranks 2nd In 10 African Countries With High Police Bribery Rates -Report by Thissystem(op): 7:56pm On Feb 29, 2024
Getting security is a universal need, but it proves challenging for people globally, including in Africa, largely due to the work attitude of security officials.

For instance, in Africa, citizens are frequently compelled to part with their hard-earned money when reporting a crime or seeking help in emergencies. This payment is often required to navigate bureaucracy or ensure a prompt response from the police.

The prevalence of systemic corruption on the continent has increased the challenges citizens face when engaging with the police. And although many African countries have laws in place to combat corruption, the enforcement of these laws often faces challenges.

A recent survey shows that negative perceptions of police professionalism and corruption go hand in hand with low public trust in the police, poor marks on government performance in reducing crime, and citizens’ sense of insecurity.

Below are 10 African countries with the highest police bribery rates:

1 Liberia 78%
2 Nigeria 75%
3 Sierra Leone 72%
4 Uganda 71%
5 Congo-Brazzaville 68%
6 Cameroon 63%
7 Burkina Faso 62%
8 Guinea 53%
9 Kenya 52%
10 Gabon 51%

HealthHardship: More Nigerians May Develop Mental Health Issues - Psychiatrist Warns by Thissystem(op): 8:06pm On Feb 28, 2024
A Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Taiwo Obindo, has said that more Nigerians may go mad due to the increasing economic hardship in the country.

Obindo, who is also the President of Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria (APN), stated this in Lagos on Wednesday.

He said that the current economic hardship, coupled with the level of poverty and other social factors in the country might likely inflict mental illness on more Nigerians.

He listed the social factors to include high cost of living, kidnapping, financial problems, inflation, child abuse, rape, broken homes and broken marriages, traumatic experiences and degrees of violence among others.

Dr Obindo explained that people who were predisposed to the social factors were more likely to develop mental health issues particularly this period the country was faced with lots of economic challenges.

According to him, the Nigerian society is a culture medium for organisms that put people at risk of mental illness.

Obindo, who identified poverty as a leading cause of mental health illness, said that many Nigerians were battling with poverty; saying that might predispose them to mental health conditions.

“The devastating effects of inflation, poverty, insurgent attacks, insecurity and other social crisis across the country, had left several people in need of psychiatric evaluation,” Obindo told NAN.

“No doubt, the situation has resulted to an increase in the number of mental health cases. If you look at the degrees of social crisis and hardships and compare it with what goes on in other climes, you will discover that we have a greater predisposition to developing mental illness.”

CrimeCourt Orders Arrest Of Popular Hausa Musician For Releasing ‘Immoral’ Songs by Thissystem(op): 9:27pm On Feb 26, 2024
The Kano State High Court has issued an order to the police for the immediate arrest of a renowned Hausa singer identified as Ado Isa Gwanja.

Justice Aisha Mahmud upheld a previous decision from the Upper Sharia Court Bichi, which had issued an arrest warrant against the musician last year.

The prosecutor, Barrister Badamasi Gandu, representing the Kano Ulamas Forum, initiated legal proceedings against Gwanja and six others at the Upper Sharia Court.

He claimed that the popular musician engages in practices which go against Islam and he releases songs which are in defiance of the moral teachings of Islam and the cultural values of Kano State.

In response, Gwanja and his associates swiftly sought a restraining order against their arrest at the state high court. While an interim order was initially granted, preventing the police from executing the arrest pending a hearing for the fundamental rights enforcement application, Justice Aisha Mahmud reversed this decision on Monday.

The court has now directed the police to arrest and investigate the musician while also barring him from performing at public events such as wedding ceremonies until the substantive suit is resolved.

Justice Mahmud further mandated that the Gwanja must submit his music to the state film and videos censorship board for approval moving forward.
