Good day boss, could you please list out the schools?

It depends on the course or area of study. There are rough rankings for most subjects because some universities are stronger in certain subject. For example, below is the link for computer science.
https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-science-schools/computer-science-rankings. Carnegie Mellon is the highest-ranked but does not even feature in the top 50 in other subjects.

Generally, for a particular subject, the top 50 will be more difficult to get into, while the lower-ranked schools are potentially safer choices.

I have been following this thread for a more than a year now and I must commend the people keeping alive. In the spirit of doing same, see my profile below
GRE:Q156V161
GPA:4.96
Undergraduate Major: Plant biology and Biotechnology
Intended program: PhD in molecular and Cell biology, I’m open other areas like bioinformatics, stem biology or cancer biology(might be a challenge given my discipline)

I sent my scores to four schools
Cornell
Ohio State University
Boston University
University of California

My AWA score was poor (2.5) and I thought I killed it considering how relatively simple the topics were and how lengthy I wrote on them. I had 2 weeks to prepare for GRE and only read for AWA few hours to exams, I just gleaned info I could on Nairaland and watched YouTube videos on it.

Considering my profile, please I need advice on other ambitious and safe schools

@Time2smile @scholastica16
Congratulations. You have a good GRE score and a monster GPA. Which of the Universities of California? The schools you sent your scores to are your reach schools. What you need to add now are less competitive, safer schools.

Is it possible to hold two assistanship position in same school?
Yeah, I guess it is possible once both do not exceed 20hrs per week.

10 hours each!
I assume the one included in your I20 is not enough to cover the needed funds. You should go with a print out of the award letter for both positions and explain clearly that you have two different research assistantships of 10 hrs per week each.
Many applicants have gone for interviews with i20 that didn't include any funding for one reason or another, whereas they had funding and their visas were granted. You will be fine.

I received my i-20 form today. I used eglobal (UPS).
Thank you time2smile, sophil and others.
However, one of my Research Assistantship contract was not included in my i-20 form.
Actually I was given a Research Assistant Position in two different departments. Only one was added.
I already have the contracts in my mail.
Can I go to the embassy with the i-20 and show the VO my contract or do I need to ask for another i-20.
Actually, I don't have the fund to order for another i-20.
Please house! What can I do?
How many hours are you expected to work for each of the research assistantship positions? You can only work a total of 20hrs per week. So you might not be able to combine both positions.

Computer Science, Fall 19.

Admits so far.

Auburn University (MS) (Grad Coordinator said they are looking for funding for me, said they had budget cuts so nothing is sure)

Bowling Green State University (MS) In state and Out of state Tuition waiver + $10,000.00 Graduate Assistantship stipend

East Tennesse State University (MS) In state and Out of state Tuition waiver - Assistantship decisions will be made next month

University of North Texas (Ph.D) Tuition waiver + Graduate Assistantship

I am just confused right now
Congratulations. Personally I think you should choose UNT. Denton is a northern suburb of Dallas. Dallas is one of the emerging tech hubs with real good paying jobs and openings.
I would want to teach you to game the system but you can always "master out".

Truth is that either visa category may work. She just needs to get her story straight in line with the intent. If she says she wants to do a short visit and come back, then B2 is preferrable. If she wants to state that she is going to stay for sometime say like 6 months+ with her husband, then F2 works too. In that case, she should get a leave of absence from work and go stay with him. But at 9 months to the end of his program is kind of pushing it (Her F2 will expire when his F1 expires). I wonder why she did not do this from the get go and stay with him for a while then could have been coming and going on an F2? With an F2, she could have started part time courses and even converted to F1 through 593. It was even possible before to get a work permit on F2 (not sure about this anymore). They could also have had their childern in the U.S. with no future problems on an F2. Okay... I am saying too much grin , I am spoiling market for imigration attorneys... the game is to be sold, not to be told cheesy
While I understand where you are coming from, F1 and F2 visa does not expire once the F1 holder is still in status. The student can undertake OPT of three years after his graduation (for STEM courses) and he will still be in status. Someone got F2 visa recently on the student visa thread despite the fact that her husband had graduated but will be doing an OPT. She presented the letter from the company to that effect. Is that not already strongly suggesting immigrants intent? But Alas, the visa was still approved.

Like you said, it is about getting her story straight and finding the best way to present her case.

Not true.
I got approved on Thursday.
My MIL went in on Friday (73years) and got approved. She left home 5am in the rain, for her 730am appointment and was back by 9am

2 approvals in 2 days. 1 family. Lagos Centre

The stories of blue slip / refusals is just a bandwagon people are floating around recently.

If your application is done truthfully and you don't try to impress the VO, you'd be fine.
I saw people getting rejected, but their interview session sounded whacky to me even.
Yes, I felt sad for a family who got bounced. They looked very together and all, but they got the blue slip
Just because you got your visa doesn't mean you should give "bandwagon" label to those that were rejected. GrandMa Visa doesn't really count as evidence for your ascertain because old people are hardly denied. You should be grateful not feeling.......

Congrats. You don't need to upload any financial documents. International office will issue your I20 based on your funding.
However, there are situations in which the student is required to manually upload the evidence of funding such as letter from the department.
So @Miaanita, contact your funding source(most likely your department) and the international office to inquire about the next course of action.

Thanks for the response. My program is under JSOM. It's not STEM. On the website, the scholarship and assistanships are mentioned.

However, it seems that the admission application, scholarship and assistanship require separate applications.

I submitted a separate application (essay) for the scholarship. But I do not know how to go about the application for assistanship and I don't understand the rules as stated on the website.
Ok. If I will be honest with you, funding is not readily available for Social Sciences and Arts especially at Masters level. You already have in state tuition which cuts your tuition in half, and the truth is that that there are a lot of Chinese and Indian students ready to pay the fees.

However, the good thing is that JSOM is highly ranked, has excellent alumni network and really help with job placement. Dallas economy is really doing well and there are a number of big companies with headquarters or substantial presence in Dallas.

I checked the website and it seemed only enrolled students can apply for a Graduate Assistantship. I think you can try to apply once you get your net ID and password if you accept the admission. But am afraid you it is really after a semester that you will be seriously considered for an assistantship. The other option you can explore is on campus job, and even those are few and far between. So, I will advise you to consider your options carefully. I really should be asleep.

Any UTDallas alumni or student here? I have a few questions about applying for assistanships.

I have been admitted for the MS accounting program and awarded the Deans Scholarship($1000 plus in-state tuition waiver) for Fall 2019.

I want to know if I can start applying for assistanships now, or do I have to wait till after first semester first? And if anybody can explain the process, I'd be extremely grateful.
What are the funding options mentioned on the Department website. Is your program under JSOM(Javel Jindal School of Management)and is it classified as STEM ?

Dear all,especially 'Seniors',

I noticed that we rarely talk about funding here, although I know that it is the Nigerian culture to hide earnings but I feel it could help newbies make decisions especially those with "stella" profile (even though we with obasanjo profile need it too) as they maybe having multiple offers.Another thing that make me wonder what's wrong with sharing what the full funding entails is that we are almost anonymous here.

Also how has your experienced been with the amount given to you monthly,is it enough or you have to do extra "hustle" ?.
I am asking this especially to those who have full funding so that others coming may prepare their mind for what is ahead of them.

Thanks in anticipation.

P.S : make una leave that lab small, socialize here on nairaland and go back to the lab grin

cc: Quoran,Time2smile,Sirriddy,etc
Funding levels depends on whether it is MSc or PhD. The monthly stipend ranges from 1000 to 2,500 with most PhD funding between 1700 and 2200 per month.
The biggest expense in the US is rent, so the best way to reduce expenses is by having a roommate. Therefore if a single student can keep rent below 500 per month, the other monthly expenditures should be less than $500, giving a total less than $1000. Although rent varies based on States and is most expensive in California and the North East (New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts).

Most PhD students end up saving. A fully funded single PhD student has no business taking illegal work to make ends meet, or else it is a case of greed.

You will however need to come with about $1500 to settle down before your stipend kicks in.

What does it mean if a school asks you to provide financial documents even after fully funded?
If the funding covers all your expenses, you may have to send the funding letter from your department to the International office or Bursary, whichever one is applicable.
However, if the funding doesn't cover all expenses, then you have to show enough personal funds to cover the shortfall.

Please what does it when an institution says there's full funding which covers stipend, tuition and health insurance but not FEES? Can the money generated from possible Teaching assistantship cover this fee cost?

Pls treat as urgent.
Yes, stipend from teaching assistanstship will be enough to cover it. The "FEES" are usually small fees like international students fees, orientation fees and the likes. The fees should not exceed a few hundred dollars.

One of the requirements is that the domestic employee will have to be paid minimum wage or prevalence wage, whichever one is higher for every hour worked.
She can't meet the conditions for the "domestic help" she wants to take along.

So the test day experience.

Couldn't really sleep much, I kept waking up at intervals, I left home around 6am as my exam was for 8:30am, I was on the mainland and my exam was in V.I,dragnet center. I got there few minutes after 8 due to the traffic. Oooh I ensured I took rice before leaving home cause I read that it was very important, I also took lucocade boost and chin chin with me for the break time.

When I got to the center, we were briefed, we kept our belongings in our lockers and we were assigned a working station. There was ear plug which was helpful during the exam although it was too tight and wanted to give me headache, so I removed it at intervals, i was also cold due to the AC

My issue task was sweet, wrote about 5 paragraphs with about 7mins to proofread, I am a fast typist(not too fast though)
My argument task was also cool, I wish a survey was stated though so I could tackle it well, but I tried my best. Expecting a 4 or 4.5.

So while preparing for GRE, I didn't know what to wish for, either quantitative as experimental or verbal. I know the verbal bores me alot and I noticed from my practice tests that I scored higher in my first two verbal than the last 1 when verbal was the experimental, which means I get tired of the questions as time goes on. Then I knew quantitative was my strong point, but I didn't know if I should wish for Quantitative experimental because I might also get tired and I needed greater score for my quantitative because of my field.

The first question was Verbal, I said in my mind that I was done for.

I think the first verbal wasn't that nice, I didn't utilise my time very well, the 1st quantitative also had some hard questions and surprisingly, I couldn't manage my time well too, it's surprising because all through my preparation, I always finish the Quantitative on time with at least 5 minutes to spare, so I will say my Quantitative was generally harder than what I saw in the practice tests.

For the verbal, I went with the advice on this thread to do the TC and SE first, then the short passages and then the long ones. So it meant in two sections, I just picked the answers for the long passages randomly. The second quantitative was also hard, I saw that I had one unanswered question few seconds to go, I just went to the question and picked any option grin, for the 3rd Verbal, I had enough time to go over all my answers again.

Let me talk about my expected score. I wanted at least 320, 155V 165Q, but when I saw my score, although I didn't meet it, I was genuinely happy as I smiled. My unofficial score was:

153V 161Q. I was not happy because of my quantitative but because of my verbal, because in my mind I was already preparing for 146 highest. So I would say it was an auspicious test for me and the verbal was fortuitous. Oooh I forgot to add that before the third section started, I was already hungry, so it's best to eat before the test, I took my energy drink and snack during the break too.

In all, I am happy with my scores, I sent my scores to four schools.

I applied for Masters in Statistics or Applied Statistics in some schools and Biostatistics in others.

PS: GRE was the only item remaining in all my applications, they have all been completed, all recommendations sent, application submitted and fees paid. So the GRE just sealed the applications.

Fall 2019, yes we can. Hoping to come here to share my good news before the end of the month. And ooh, if given the opportunity, I wouldn't retake the test, I am exhausted biko. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread in one way or the other. God bless you.
Good scores and post, well done. This detailed post is inline with the original purpose of the thread. Yeah if there is one word to describe GRE, it is "EXHAUSTING"

Please who has been in my shoes before or know anyone who has travelled with domestic help while on F1, any documents or relevant info I should be privy to, please help out if you can.

There is no visa category for domestic help and the domestic help does not qualify for B1/B2. You will have to go without the domestic help and start learning to live without domestic help if you want to study in the US.

Greetings to the house. I appreciate the great job you guys are doing. May God continue to support your own work too.
Please, I have 2 PhD admissions to start summer 2019-NMSU and LSU. However, I've not been able to secure funding for both. LSU says I can only get funding for my kind of program after enrollment/registration. NMSU says they're still looking for funding for me since most fundings are available in fall semester.
My questions/enquiries are:
1. Which of the schools is better, not in term of ranking but such factors like ease of securing assistantship, friendliness, cost of living and such like
2. Does choosing abuja embassy for interview despite residing in Lagos has any negative implication?
3.Does going to embassy without Phd funding has any serious consequence?
4.I will appreciate further assistance/information from a current student/alumnus of either school.
Thank you
How do you plan to finance your PhD without funding? It might be better for you to wait till Fall to secure full funding

Oga mi @Time2smile. Been awhile. I hope Yankee is treating you well.

Please I need your suggestion. I have applied to four programs in the US and I am yet to receive any decisions. In order to increase my chances, I intend applying to KAUST in Saudi Arabia. The issue now is that I read the school is very selective and seeing that they require official test scores, I don't want to waste money for this venture if my chances are very slim

My profile :
Applying for MS Electrical Engineering

GRE : 313 (Q161 V152) AW 3.5
TOEFL : 101 ( 27 27 22 25)
CGPA: 4.31/5.00 (Wes igpa 3.60/4.00)

Please, the question is open to everyone ...I just qouted you because I am aware you applied to same school during your applications. Thanks to everyone in anticipation.
I will never be the one to discourage anyone from applying to a particular school. So if the resources needed to apply is within your means, you can go on and apply and don't let the competiveness perturb you.

I am hopeful one of the schools you have applied to will come through with admission with funding. Maintain the faith.
Yankee is treating me well enough. Thank you.

It is not compulsory to write one of the test to get a visa, but it will almost be impossible to get PhD admission with full funding in Computer Science without writing GRE. Although I will advise you to write TOEFL too for a number of reasons. It is the easier of the two, and any funding you get will likely be in form if a teaching assistanstship. An evidence of English proficiency(especially in the Speaking section) will make your application more competitive.

The sad part is that the inquiries of those with likely genuine questions were ignored or didn't get enough attention while the conman sucks all the air out of the thread.

Thank you for your suggestions
The VO is right. You applied for the wrong visa category for your stated purpose. Yes you can apply again and state that you want to be with your spouse. However, you should find a better way to describe the role you will be playing in supporting him towards the successful conclusion of his studies rather than saying you will be helping him out with daily stuffs.
You should also be able to show enough funds to support both of you for at least a year.

Nice that people are posting about their applications. Way to keep the thread lively and inspire fall2020 applicants and beyond. I remember the exploits of Scholastica16, drhopeful, femi132 et al and how reading their stories kept me going.

I applied to 9 schools for a mix of MS and PhD programs:

Virginia Tech (MS)
Purdue University (MS)
Auburn University (MS)
Colorado state university (MS)
University of Maryland (PhD)
University of Massachusetts (Ms/PhD)
University of Tennessee (PhD)
Iowa State university (PhD)
Rennsalear polytechnic institute (PhD)

Profile:
Program: Electrical Engineering
CGPA: 3.64/4.00
GRE: 163Q/158V/4
TOEFL: 104

I was a bit ambitious with my applications this year. Reason being that I have seen people with lesser profiles get admitted into these schools. I've put in my best and corresponded with professors in some schools. I'm hopeful that one of these schools provides admission and funding. I however have a contingency plan but I hope it doesn't come to that.

#Fall2019 #YesWeCan
This is your second application cycle, isn't it? I love your doggedness and determination. You have got it this time around. Just relax and hope for the best. I know this period can be nerve wrecking. I strongly believe you will have to choose from multiple funded offers.
