Recently, a friend told me about funding in US university for international students which I was ignorant about, though I have been searching for such for a while now. Missed out on African Institute for Mathematical Science last year, re-applied this year and not gotten any response yet. To cut the long story short, I just need advice on how to go about schools I can pick and some other tangible information that would be beneficial.

Like other have said, you are in the right place and should endeavor to read previous pages. Reading from page 1 is not too much of a ask.

You should look to write GRE BY Nov to meet the deadline of December 15th for some schools. 3 months is enough for adequate preparation if you are not too busy with work and other things. You should aim for minimum of 160 in your Quant. You should also be prepared to write TOEFL.

Finding the right schools for you is one of the most crucial aspects of the application process and it is a task best undertaken by you. So, start researching. The good thing is that Mathematics is well funded at PhD level and to a lesser extent for Masters.

It would have been better if it is only limited to using programs that are widely known to be public assistance like Medicaid. But under this law, making use of some certain tax deductions and health insurance through Obamacare might make a non-citizen ineligible for Green card and naturalization.

This administration strongly anti-immigrant and anti-foreigner and hopefully will be voted out soon.

Most of the information about funding is on the schools websites. You need to read the websites thoroughly and garner the information you need. This might require you to read the graduate handbook and also contact the graduate coordinator. You can go as far as mailing current and former students.

You have to do this extensive research before deciding to apply to any school. Admission requirements, average GRE score, recommendation letters requirements and other relevant information are also essential to make an informed decision.

You will be surprised the invaluable information you can get if you are determined, dogged, and put in the effort.

Good afternoon house, pls i need advice on this.

I got Assistantship that covers my tuition with stipend but it does not appear on my I-20 becos the Assistantship came after i got my I-20.

Is it normal i put the Assistantship contract form together with my I-20 inside my international passport when going for my interview or i should wait for the VO to ask for it.

Also my school resume 27th of this month and my interview is scheduled for 20th of this month. The school payment due date is 17th of this month which is 3 days before my interview, i mailed the school if i can pay for the Fees that my GA does not cover after my visa is approved and i got a response from the bursary assistant director that i should make sure i pay those fee not covered by my GA on or before the payment due date in other to avoid cancellation of my schedules, she said” should my visa is deneid a refund will be processed. Pls is it adviceable i pay this fee and if i pay when VO ask who will be paying can i say “i got research assistantship that covers my tuition and my dad will be responsible for other expenses, as a matter of fact i have paid all fee that my GA does not cover becos of the payment due date” pls my good people advice me. My head is boiling

1) You should have the assistantship letter ready and inform the VO you have assistantship when asked about source of funding. The letter is not part of I-20 and putting it together looks a bit desperate.

2) I can assure you that the refund we be processed if you couldn't attend due to visa or any other issue. Heck, tuitions are refunded by Schools if you drop classes before certain dates after registering and attending some classes. So you can make the payment with the full knowledge that you money is safe.

3) You can tell the VO you have made the payment so as to meet up with the payment deadline, but in that case you should have evidence of payment.

4) However, the most important thing is how feasible is it for you to get to the US on the 27th with your interview schedule for 20th. You might want to get a an extension letter from the school to cover you late resumption or defer your admission to spring.

I know my profile is not great. Bt i am planning to apply for a PhD to 10 schools.

I intended to retake gre not only to improve my chance bt to augment cost of posting scores to schools.
Lemme explain the above.

I am considering using the free gre score report to schools that fits my previous 301 score in my next gre exam. This, I believe, will save the cost of reporting gre scores to the schs and probably increase my chances if I score higher.

I will appreciate any advice. Especially on school to select.

Your profile is competitive and a good GRE score of 315 and above (Quant >160) will improve your chances. LOR are also very important and you should start contacting your referees if you want to complete all ten applications.

I’m a silent reader but an avid reader, I owe everyone who took out time to post their transcript on this platform. It is only wise and prudent of me to return the favor.
Here’s a few tip from me to every prospective visa seeking student.
1. Put God First.
2. Pray without ceasing at least for the last 7days before the interview.
3. Fast if you can. I did that 3 day to my interview.
4. Leave your battle to God to fight.
5. Dress according to what you depict. The way you dress is the way you’ll be addressed.
6. Forget the respect. Majority of the VO’s and workers at the embassy are not older than you. I didn’t greet anyone. Not even the white guy who registered my fingers. He was forced to greet me. Actually I was waiting for him to greet me first. He’s in my country for Gods sake. He should respect me. Not the other way round.
7.Finally, forget the MA or SIR you use for the VO except in exceptional circumstance when you know he/she is way older than you. The VO greeeted me first. I didn’t and it was deliberate. We are all playing mind games.

Congratulations. As you embark on your new adventure and see the world, you will realize that addressing people, especially strangers, with Sir and Ma'am irrespective of age is courtesy and good manners. It is not a sign of inferiority complex.

Gatech - PhD Electrical Engineering
USC - PhD Electrical Engineering
UTK - PhD Data Science and Engineering
Oregon State - PhD Electrical Engineering (Data Science)

Basically my thought is I have a weak background in Data Science, so the rejects from UTK and Oregon State. A professor from Gatech contacted me and I was overwhelmed, then 5 days later I got a reject from them. For USC I believe the problem is they need hard copy transcript before processing application and I had delay in sending mine. Probably they do first come first serve.

Why did you choose Gannon over PennState? . That might be difficult to explain. You need to think about the reason why you selected and applied to Gannon out of all the colleges in the US.
Also, I think you are in the best position to explain why you chosed two schools in Pennsylvania.
You said Literature is defined as the study of man and his society, how does studying literature in the US helps in the Nigerian society.?You might want to leave that part out of your reply. The other points above and below it are stronger.

You need a complete application package for those caliber of schools and you should have written TEOFL/IELTS instead of asking for waivers. Please write it and accept the offer from NYU for Spring. You can try to apply to other schools too but the competitiveness means you have no assurance of securing an offer. A bird in hand is worth.............

How will he explain his relative as sponsor on his i20 when asked? You can advise him.

That I don't have a definite answer for. He could try to explain the relative as her husband. That's is if the VO specifically ask about the relative stated on the I-20, which I really doubt. However, if the question is only who is sponsoring you, then the response should be her husband without mentioning the relative nor presenting the relatives account statement.
That is just my view on this matter and I might be wrong.
We all know no relative is giving his wife $5000 to be with her husband without promise of paying back. The VO just want to know she has enough money for her expenses and her husband is in the best position to provide that.

You can't pay the SEVIS fee in Naira. It depends on the rate the person helping you to pay uses, or the rate you meet at Seme in Benin Republic. Abokifx says it is 360 Naira to a Dollar. Don't forget to add western union fee of $10.

How will He explain that his relative is ready to foot the bill for his wife to eat and sleep in the United States.Remember the wife is not allowed to work to repay the money. This is not an investment in the students future. It is better he sticks to his personal fund else he will have a hard time convincing the VO. My two cents.

Hey guys. I just started studying for the GRE and I now know why most people score higher in quant than verbal.. The vocab is something else. I want to know if the goal is to cram the words or master the art of guessing correctly. thanks

Neither of the two. You should learn and understand the meaning of the word in context and different usage in sentences.

I sat for my first ever GRE last month,quite nervous on the test day. I had a score of 310 (160Q 150V 3AWA),few marks shy from my target score �.
I really need advice from the house on whether I should put in an application or retake the GRE cos I really need fundings.

It is always difficult to suggest schools because you are the only one that know yourself and what's important to you. If you go through these thread I am sure you will see some schools people have applied to and gotten accepted. You can also come up with schools that are not yet popular in here and in turn open the doors for others when you get in.
Personally I am not a fan of Cleveland state, I think you should aim higher considering your GPA.

So you guys are turning this thread to a place to drop numbers for the whatsapp group. That is not the purpose of this thread. Congratulations to those that wrote GRE. Thanks for sharing your experience. @elevatedmind I can't overemphasized the importance of wrapping up all preparations two days before the test and getting a good rest the rest day. I stated it when I shared my test experience too.

If that was the case then why have there been a high influx of Nigerians on expired and unexpired temporary US visas flooding into Canada illegally through the US-Canadian border seeking for asylum?

If those Nigerians who are granted US visas are really with high paying jobs and quite successful in Nigeria then they should not be overstaying their presence in the US or crossing illegally into Canada to seek fake asylum.

I will have to disagree with you. The key word here is usually, most of those that are able to obtain B1/B2 (visit) visas are relatively well off compared to the rest of the country. One of those mentioned in the article came in with his wife and two children, another woman was with her three children. Do you think anyone without a good source of income will be able to convince the VO about an intention to go for a "vacation" with the whole family?. A trip that cost Millions of Naira. Of course, some do slip through but most are not your "I-can't-find-job-in-Nigeria" economic migrant.

I wholeheartedly agree with your statement in bold. But, sadly that is not the case. Quite a number of people are oblivious to how difficult it is to survive in the U.S as an illegal. Then Canada becomes the next available option. Another factor is the sense of hopelessness and anarchy in the country. These people think their children will be better off in the long run because they can't see a future for them in the country. So they emigrate from Nigeria while they have the resources to do so.

Living under the perceptual fear of Kidnapping, herds-men attacks might be enough reason to seek asylum. Some do get it, but trust Nigerians to abuse the system.
