An Anti-corruption crusaders under the aegis of Concerned Citizens Against Corruption, on Tuesday stormed the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice on Tuesday to demand the prosecution of former Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, and a thorough investigation into the company’s transactions for the past five years.

The protesters, led by its Convener, Comrade Kabir Matazu, expressed disappointment that despite President Bola Tinubu’s sack of Kyari and the entire NNPCL board on April 2, 2025, no steps have been taken to investigate the alleged corrupt practices under Kyari’s leadership.

The group highlighted the controversy surrounding the rehabilitation and restreaming of government-owned refineries, citing allegations of billions of dollars being spent without transparency.

They also pointed out a perplexing issue where NNPCL is reportedly owing Matrix Energy over $2 billion, with the debt being serviced through daily crude oil allocations.

“It is on record that this sack of the erstwhile corrupt leadership of the NNPCL drew applause from Nigerians, especially groups like our, which had been at the forefront of demanding accountability and transparency in the running of institutions,” Matazu said.

“It is also of note that in Mele Kyari leadership of the NNPCL was plagued with countless and endless allegations of corruption owing the opaque way he ran the place, more of a racket in favour of his friends and associates.

“This corrupt handling of the place was so suffocating to the national economy that Nigerians were taking to the streets to demand Kyari’s removal from the job, which Mr President eventually acceded to.

“However, Nigerians are disenchanted that Mr President has only stopped at removing the former leadership without taking steps to investigate how the Kyari and his cabal bled this country dry in various ways, which we believe is still hurting the country economically as we speak.

“In this regard, a sore point is the fraud surrounding the rehabilitation and the restreaming of the government owned refineries. The figures and the facts are simply not adding up.

“In addition to the billions of dollars that the Kyari-led administration claimed to have spent on fixing the refineries, it also claimed that one of his fronts, Matrix Energy Limited invested $400 million in the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt Refinery. This is even as the Federal Executive Council had approved $1.5 billion for the repairs of the same facility.

“But there are even more perplexing issues emerging. The NNPCL is now reportedly owing Matrix Energy more than $2 billion. This debt is being serviced through daily crude oil allocations to Matrix Energy that are not being paid for.

“What we are talking about here is a daily allocation of 80,000 barrels of crude oil to a non-state actors running a security outfit. Because of the deals he entered, Nigerians are being shortchanged by Kyari’s associates even when he is no longer in office.

“There are consequently posers that require urgent clarifications. Why and how is the Federal Government through the NNPCL owing Matrix Oil $2 billion? Why is the debt being paid with daily supply of crude oil? Who were the parties to the negotiations of this satanic deal? Why are Nigerians being kept in the dark?

The Concerned Citizens Against Corruption strongly believes that getting to the root of this matter will help the Federal Government to account for how public resources were squandered on the controversial refineries’ repairs undertaken under the Kyari leadership.

“An investigation into the questionable transactions would also point the government in the direction of what funds to recover and from whom, which is sorely needed now considering Nigeria’s economic condition.

“Furthermore, investigating all that transpired will set the stage for holding even the current leadership accountable while equally identifying potential pitfalls for those who are now in charge so that Nigeria is not caught in a loop of repeating the same mistakes.

“In view of the foregoing, the Concerned Citizens Against Corruption calls on the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation to immediately review all agreements entered by the NNPCL under the Mele Kyari administration.

“This investigation should find out how much the Federal Government has lost to such agreements and recommendations on to recover identified funds. We demand for an immediate judicial review. “

The Concerned Citizens Against Corruption called on the Minister of Justice to escalate the issue to a point where the Federal Government institutes a commission of inquiry into NNPCL’s handling of the refineries’ repairs under Kyari and the sacked board.

The protesters vowed to continue demanding accountability and transparency in the running of institutions, emphasizing that Nigerians deserve to know the truth about the alleged corrupt practices under Kyari’s leadership.

The Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in Minna, Niger State, has officially been designated as the alternative airport to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

This announcement was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during the launch of Overland Airways’ commercial flight operations from the Minna airport.

Highlighting the airport’s capacity and strategic relevance, Keyamo praised the facility’s infrastructure and its potential to serve as a major aviation hub.

“The runway is an international runway; a 747 and a triple seven can use this runway. Why, over the years, this has been underutilised is still a puzzle,” the minister said.

He emphasised that the airport meets international standards in both physical and operational aspects, and expressed surprise at its previous underuse.

“Our eyes are on this airport. By the powers conferred on me, I declare Minna Airport as the alternative to Abuja Airport. NCAA, FAAN, take note,” Keyamo declared.

The declaration is expected to bolster aviation traffic in Minna and serve as a strategic relief point for flight operations in northern Nigeria, especially during emergencies or congestion at the Abuja airport.

This is the highest irresponsibility of the Nigeria government! They tend to use the White House as an excuse for their failure! So why not compare the electricity supply in the US to ours ? They have 24/7 supply of electricity in the US but of course Bayo Onanuga would never compare. But when it comes to stealing of public funds to finance their failure, they are always so quick to compare with the White House. These politicians are the worst enemies of the Nigerian people and you all will riot in hell for this atrocities against humanity. It’s really absurd and disgusting 🤮

The Presidency on Tuesday evening rose in strong defence of the Federal Executive Council’s approval of a N10 billion solar energy project for the State House, amid public outcry over the cost and timing of the initiative.

Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, made the clarification on his verified X handle, following media reports questioning the necessity of the project, especially in view of Nigeria’s current economic realities.

Onanuga stressed that transitioning the State House to solar power aligns with global best practices, noting that the White House in Washington, D.C., also uses solar energy as part of its power supply.

“The White House in Washington D.C. uses solar power,” Onanuga wrote, implying that the adoption of renewable energy for high-level government facilities is not unprecedented and reflects a commitment to sustainability.

The Special Adviser illustrated his point with video of a similar project executed for the American number one residence, which explains the reasons the US Presidency opted for the solar alternative.

The proposed solar system, sources said, would provide stable electricity for the President’s residence, administrative offices, and other essential buildings within the State House complex, enhancing energy efficiency and long-term cost savings.

While some Nigerians have hailed the environmental benefits of the initiative, others have raised concerns about its price tag and whether such expenditure is prudent at a time when many citizens are grappling with economic hardship.

Contrary to recent reports circulating on social and traditional media suggesting the emergence of a new terrorist organization in Kwara State, Mahmouda, security sources have clarified that it is not a name of a new terrorist group but rather a known Boko Haram commander.

Mahmouda is said to be a veteran Boko Haram fighter who initially operated in Borno State before relocating to Kaduna, where he briefly collaborated with the notorious terror kingpin, Sadiku.

He later moved into the Shiroro and Rafi axis of Niger State, where he aligned with the remnants of Darul Salam, recruiting dozens of youths and enforcing extremist laws particularly on Fulani herdsmen.

Security intelligence confirms that Mahmouda has since moved some of his fighters further southwest into the forests bordering Kwara State, where he has established ties with local bandit groups.

These elements are not a new organization but are extensions of Boko Haram collaborating with bandits already operating in the North West.
This clarification comes in the wake of past denials from security agencies.

When intelligence analyst Zagazola Makama previously raised the alarm about the movement of terrorists toward Kwara, the Police issued a rebuttal, describing the report as fear-mongering.

However, with recent attacks and the presence of insurgent elements now being confirmed in parts of Kwara, observers are questioning the responsiveness and preparedness of authorities.

“What will the Police say now that the very thing they denied has begun to happen?” a senior security source queried.

Authorities are now being urged to act swiftly and decisively to prevent Mahmouda and his collaborators from entrenching themselves in the North Central corridor.

Analysts warn that failing to address this threat early could result in Kwara becoming another flashpoint in Nigeria’s protracted insurgency.

Security agencies have been advised to increase intelligence operations, deploy special forces, and establish a proactive counter-insurgency presence in border forests between Niger and Kwara states to neutralize the threat before it escalates.
