You save your salary to earn a promotion. No book grant, you buy books for yourself with your salary. Nigerian public University lecturers are perhaps the only workers that use their salary to work to achieve the criteria set for their promotion. I told him that if he should join the academics now, it will take him the next 12 years at least, to become a Senior Lecturer to earn the salary of a starter in his present organisation. And that since FG thinks the lecturers deserve no pay rise, it will take him the next 15 years of serious academic and research output to earn his present salary in his present organisation. Meanwhile, he will have to fund all that with his salary for that 15 years. I asked if he still want to be a lecturer and he was mute. He was like this is bad and not fair. Then I said, when you see us in class teaching with all smiles and doing our best, it is not because we have a good salary and working conditions, but because we love the job and try to manage the little we are receiving to get the job done. This is the life of the academic that you do not know. Their life may look glittering but it is not gold. The poor welfare and work environment are telling on the quality of the output from the university. Some lecturers, especially the younger ones, are already getting pissed off and leaving or planning to leave. So, how long can we sustain this? Everyone keeps saying every lecturer should have a side hustle and stop complaining. That will be the worst thing to happen to Nigerian universities. Some of our colleagues with side hustle just come to teach and leave to manage their side hustle. You can ask the students about the impact of such a lecturer on them. You don't want to have a university where lecturers just come to teach and leave for their side hustle. A university is not designed that way. President Buhari, Adamu Adamu, and Nasiru El-Rufai in 2013/2014 gave a detailed explanation of the several reasons why ASUU is always declaring strike actions. Adamu Adamu's articles on why ASUU is always on strike were something else. As a matter of fact, I have never seen a comprehensive article like El-Rufai's write-up in October 2013 that he titled: For those who do not understand "why ASUU is on strike". Go back and read their words and listen to their videos and stop behaving like you need a thinking cap. ASUU fight is for the survival of the system where you want your child to come for a degree program. We have helped the state governors to destroy public primary and secondary education. You have a choice to take side with the FG towards the destruction of the remnant of the education system or join the fight to save the system. The choice is all yours. |

ASUU strike: When FG has no confidence in its renegotiation committees The federal government inaugurated Prof. Munzali Jubrin's renegotiation committee in December 2020. The Committee did its job and the Report was submitted in May 2021. The report was left gathering dust at the ministry of education after submission. Before then, there was the Babalakin Renegotiation committee that proposed the introduction of the tuition fee of between N350,000 to N500,000. The government only remembers Jubrin's committee report after ASUU declared a strike in February 2022, which was about 9 months later. They checked the report and were like, no the renegotiation must be renegotiated. They technically rejected what was negotiated on their behalf and the work done by those highly respected Nigerians ended in the Dustbin. Then, the FG inaugurated Prof. Nimi Briggs' renegotiation committee in March 2022 to renegotiate the renegotiated report with ASUU. They got 3 months to do the job. ASUU initially resisted meeting the Briggs' committee with a stand that the renegotiation was already concluded with the Jubrin's committee. I remember Ngige telling NLC to call ASUU to order. The second renegotiation is concluded and the Report was submitted last month (June 2022). Meanwhile, Ngige has been quiet but he came out today to reject what Prof. Nimi Briggs' committee has renegotiated on the government's behalf. He said there is no agreement yet with ASUU-FG. He said all alone with the Prof Briggs' Committee, ASUU started fixing their salaries and allowances to the exclusion of the statutory government ministries and agencies that manage the entire annual finances of the government. The FG doesn't trust the committee it set up to renegotiate. Most likely, the Briggs' committee report is also going to the dustbin. Buhari's government must be missing Babalakin. The government never had the intention to renegotiate with ASUU. They were just buying time with the inauguration of different renegotiation committees. When the committee was set up, just like it happened in 2020, Ngige urged ASUU to call off the strike while renegotiation continues. He asked NLC to call ASUU to order to return to class. He possibly thought ASUU is a union of dumb people. When ASUU did not pay attention to his rants, Ngige sent a memo to IPPIS to suspend the payment of the salaries of lecturers. This is the fifth month with salaries withheld. The idea is to use starvation to force the suspension of the strike. That still didn't work. They are now trying to use emotional blackmail that is not working. The president's "enough is enough" speech in Daura is one of the emotional blackmails that did not work, unfortunately. And Ngige said there is no agreement with ASUU yet on a day that the strike is 5 months old and rolling out some figures to blackmail ASUU. That ain't going to work. Mal Adamu Adamu, the education minister is quiet as usual. I was actually hoping the strike will end before the end of this month. But with the words of the president and Ngige, the Labour minister, it appears the journey is still far. The government has about 10 months to go. Let's wait for their next line of action in an attempt to prolong the renegotiation. Possibly they will set up another committee for the 3rd renegotiation of the renegotiated report. Dear Nigerians, especially the students, Buhari is a Muslim and Ngige is a Christian but they don't care that university students have spent 5 months at home and still counting. As you fight over the religion of politicians, just know that irrespective of their religion, you are not their priority. They are just using you. |
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH MR PRESIDENT By Prof. Abubakar Sabo The president set a powerful team to negotiate with the ASUU on matters that have to do with salvaging the university from being privatised and perhaps other issues that affect their welfare. The same president ordered another committee comprising salaries wages and income commission, budget office of the federation and federal ministry of finance to discuss, strategize and perhaps submit a report recommending an agreeable wage structure for the university workers. The same president directed ministry of communications and digital economy via nitda to come out with an acceptable payment structure consistent with the peculiarities of university workers. The same president instructed (via ministry of labour) for the stoppage of salaries of ASUU members for five months and non academic staff for two months while the negotiations are taking place. The same president via his chief of staff consistently pleaded with the union to exercise patience and give another chance for his government to fulfill an agreement it signed in 2016, 2017, 2019 and a memorandum of action detailing how the agreement will be executed in 2021. Discussions almost concluded and it has now reached for his turn to fulfill what his government promised. The same president now turns back to say "Enough is enough" That word should be used in addressing the shameful security situation we are now in. It's pitiable for a country whose government claimed to have spent over 7 trillion naira on war equipments but cannot rescue it's citizens from untrained bandits who ride motorcycles to nations capital and rescued their members from a so called maximum security prison while the president watches helplessly. That enough is enough should go to the bastardised economy where a naira equivalent of US dollar is 600 and above. A position the government which mr president superintendent has put us in and made us a laughing stock by the international community. That enough is enough should be addressed to bandits who attacked mr President's convoy while on transit to daura While he was busy giving out his eldest daughter for a second or third marriage in the villa. That enough is enough should be addressed to the shameful fuel ques we witnessed nationwide and the exorbitant price of our petrol while we still get huge revenue from the international market resulting russia/ukraine war. Mr president should say enough is enough to the high corruption on industrial scale that characterise his government officials who are now facing charges by the security agencies. Let him come out and tell us the parties involved in the 170bn largesse of the suspended OAGF. If this is another tactics of bringing the clock backwards again, it won't work. Let mr president come out and tell the whole world that he cannot honor an agreement he signed or his government signed with the unions, that's all. For the avoidance of doubt almost all our children go to the same public universities we try to salvage and about 90% of the lecturers study for pg programs in the same public universities we fought to salvage. We lost promotions, we lost salaries and we were intimidated on daily basis with hunger and other unpalatable issues. We fight because we believe what we do is the necessary option available to salvage our universities. We are the right person/ people to say "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH MR PRESIDENT" |
