The Punch reports that passengers on a Bus Rapid Transit going to the CMS area of Lagos on Wednesday were forced to become emergency midwives and labour attendants when a pregnant woman was delivered of a bouncing baby boy inside the bus. It was learnt that the woman, identified simply as Afolaranmi, was going to a private hospital in CMS for a medical checkup, when she started her labour. Some medical workers in the bus organised other passengers to help in delivering the baby. The mother was delivered of the baby at about 12pm, around the Constain bus stop.

Afolaranmi, who joined the BRT bus at the Ketu Bus stop, is a trader and lives in the Mowe area of Ogun State. After the delivery, the mother and the new baby were taken to a private hospital. A passenger on the bus, who gave his name as Shodipo, said both the woman and the baby seemed to be fine. He said:

“It was a very interesting experience. To my novice eye, the woman and the baby were both fine as of the time I left the bus.”

29-year-old triplets Rafaela, Rochele and Tagiane Bini share the same birthday, the same looks and tastes, and now – after marrying men who look strikingly similar – the same wedding anniversary too. Guests at a wedding service saw triple when three identical sisters tied the knot together at the same ceremony. The sisters, from Passo Fundo, southern Brazil, even wore the same wedding dress, as well as hair style and make up, for their big day on Saturday.

A different colour of bouquet was the only clue to help bewildered friends and family distinguish one bride from the other. Even the grooms – Rafael, Gabriel and Eduardo – admitted they had worried they might mix up their wives-to-be when it came to exchanging vows. Rafael, who married Rafaela, told how the girls sometimes deliberately confused their fiances.

He remembered:

‘There was a time when we were all in the kitchen making dinner. So Rochele, who is Gabriel’s, was doing stuff at the sink, and Rafaela was at the stove. We were there chatting and they changed places. I went behind to hug her, and said “oops” when I realised I’d got the wrong girl.’

On the day, though, the men insisted they didn’t have a problem recognising the loves of their lives.

‘Oh yes, I knew which one was mine, for sure. I knew as soon as she entered the church, she was the most beautiful,’ said Eduardo, who married Tagiane.

The sisters told how, like other identical siblings, they have always been close and shared the same tastes and interests since they were babies.

These remarkable scans clearly reveal how smoking during pregnancy harms an unborn baby’s development. New ultrasound images show how babies of mothers who smoke during pregnancy touch their mouths and faces much more than babies of non-smoking mothers. Foetuses normally touch their mouths and faces much less the older and more developed they are. Experts said the scans show how smoking during pregnancy can mean the development of the baby’s central nervous system is delayed. Doctors have long urged pregnant women to give up cigarettes because they heighten the risk of premature birth, respiratory problems and even cot death. Now researchers believe they can show the effects of smoking on babies in the womb – and use the images to encourage mothers who are struggling to give up.

As part of the study, Dr Nadja Reissland, of Durham University, used 4-D ultrasound scan images to record thousands of tiny movements in the womb.She monitored 20 mothers attending the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, four of whom smoked an average of 14 cigarettes a day.After studying their scans at 24, 28, 32 and 36 weeks, she detected that foetuses whose mothers smoked continued to show significantly higher rates of mouth movement and self-touching than those carried by non-smokers.

Foetuses usually move their mouths and touch themselves less as they gain more control the closer they get to birth, she explained. The pilot study, which Dr Reissland hopes to expand with a bigger sample, found babies carried by smoking mothers may have delayed development of the central nervous system. Dr Reissland said:

‘A larger study is needed to confirm these results and to investigate specific effects, including the interaction of maternal stress and smoking.’

She believed that videos of the difference in pre-birth development could help mothers give up smoking. But she was against demonising mothers and called for more support for them to give up. Currently, 12 per cent of pregnant women in the UK smoke but the rate is over 20 per cent in certain areas in the North East. All the babies in her study were born healthy, and were of normal size and weight.

Dr Reissland, who has an expertise in studying foetal development, thanked the mothers who took part in her study, especially those who smoked.

‘I’m really grateful, they did a good thing,’ she said. ‘These are special people and they overcame the stigma to help others.’

Co-author Professor Brian Francis, of Lancaster University, added: ‘Technology means we can now see what was previously hidden, revealing how smoking affects the development of the foetus in ways we did not realise.

‘This is yet further evidence of the negative effects of smoking in pregnancy.’

The research was published in the journal Acta Paediatrica.

A schoolgirl who didn’t want to take part in a PE lesson asked her mother to write a sick note for her teacher but she was probably surprised when she found out what she had said. At the opening mass for the plenary assembly of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria at Our Lady Queen of Nigeria Pro-Cathedral, Garki on Sunday, President Goodluck Jonathan said the insinuations that he was planning to put in place an Interim National Government instead of ensuring the sanctity of the May 29 handover date amounted to treason. He said the only ING that could be put in place was that of the military which, according to him, will not be accepted by Nigerians and the international community. He said:

“There is no way Goodluck Jonathan, elected by the people with a clear mandate, will go and head an interim government. The only ING anybody can constitute is that of the military which, of course, will not be acceptable. The Economic Community of West African States, the African Union and the United Nations won’t accept it. We will not allow Nigeria to be a pariah state again. Clearly, the insinuations about interim government, to me, amount to treasonable offence.”

Jonathan also described the recent poll delay as a blessing in disguise. He said there would have been a monumental loss during the attack by Boko Haram insurgents on Gombe State on February 14, the day the presidential election would have taken place. The President said:

“Look at what happened in Gombe State on February 14 , if the elections had been held, the casualty figure would have been higher. It is better for us to conduct elections that will not be contested; elections that are credible, free and fair. We believe no criminal element can come and prevent us from conducting our elections. I will not do anything that would jeopardise the interest of this nation because of personal interest. When I listen to how some of us (politicians) talk… but God is supreme. This nation will survive.”

Jonathan used the opportunity to again thank Christians and indeed all Nigerians, for their prayers which he said, had sustained the country despite its security challenge. Giving assurance that the country would overcome its challenges, Jonathan condemned utterances that overheat the polity.

The President again assured all stakeholders in the political process that the general elections would hold on the rescheduled dates of March 28 and April 11 and the winners inaugurated on May 29.

Dear Senator John Kerry:

I have decided as a 39 year old Nigerian Citizen that has lived in Nigeria all my life to write you this letter – one that I am equally copying to President Barack Obama and Ambassador James Entwistle based on your press statement of February 7, 2015 that read thus:

“The United States is deeply disappointed by the decision to postpone Nigeria’s presidential election, which had been scheduled for February 14.

Political interference with the Independent National Electoral Commission is unacceptable, and it is critical that the government not use security concerns as a pretext for impeding the democratic process. The international community will be watching closely as the Nigerian government prepares for elections on the newly scheduled dates. The United States underscores the importance of ensuring that there are no further delays.

As I reaffirmed when I visited Lagos last month, we support a free, transparent, and credible electoral process in Nigeria and renew our calls on all candidates, their supporters, and Nigerian citizens to maintain calm and reject election-related violence.”

First, considering your comments and expressed concern about the elections in Nigeria, which was also the prime focus of your last visit to Lagos last month, I would like to present you with the table below – the contents of which I believe your research desk on Nigeria should have been able to provide you with already:

As you would notice, Sir, April seems to have become the official election date in Nigeria over the last 4 election cycles [the 1999 elections was supervised by the Military] in the same way November has always been the case with the U.S. [for all the ones I have followed in my adult life], and this has been the case under Three Different Presidencies – those of Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, late Umar Musa Yar-Adua, and the incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan. These four elections – always supervised by the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] has done these under three different Chairmen – Abel Goubadia, Maurice Iwu and Attahiru Jega – there is therefore an established pattern here – proving this trend has nothing to do with a season or an individual but the process.

Second, I am equally concerned that your country being the lead-propagators of Democracy around the world that constantly insists on the rights of all citizens to count in a democracy do not seem to concern yourself [at least not within your press statement] with the possible impending disenfranchisement of 23.71 million Nigerian Voters by INEC – being the number of registered members of the electorate that the agency as at February 5, 2015 had not yet provided with their Permanent Voters Cards [PVCs] – as shown in the table below, this number represents a staggering 60% of the voters turn out in the 2011 Presidential elections:

Seriously, how come the same INEC that begged Nigerians in 2010 to allow it postpone the elections by almost 105 days for the same reasons of not being able to provide the citizenry with Voter’s Cards now seem ever so willing to run along with this election despite several opposing views in that regard as demonstrated by elder statesmen, political action groups and even political parties – seemingly looking like as though only the lead opposition party – All Progressives Congress [APC] seemed willing to work along with INEC to deny these 23.71 million voters of their rights to vote.

Third, it is also noteworthy that this same Obama administration as exemplified by the actions and body language of the State Department under yourself and Senator Hillary Clinton has consistently played the politics of non-committal towards Nigeria in the last 5-6 years considering the massive security challenges the nation has faced in the course of that period – rather issuing positions via those connected to your office ranging from “the Nigerian Government is corrupt and unwilling to fight Terrorism” to “We cannot sell ammunitions to Nigeria to fight Terrorism because we are concerned about the safety of such equipment” yet today, your department and nation now have a problem with a push of these elections’ dates even though the same security challenges which you have abandoned Nigeria to face is now the official reason adduced by INEC and the security forces for these postponements.

I am therefore tempted to ask you the following questions:

“If the U.S. was so interested in the peace of Nigeria and knew that elections was a very important part of that, why has the US consistently refused to offer to Nigeria the same commitment and support that it is currently offering to Iraq, Syria, Yemen versus ISIL even though today, Boko Haram could have arguably taken more lives than ISIL in the last couple of months?”
“Is there any available statistics anywhere in the world suggesting that “the Nigerian Government is more corrupt than those of Iraq, Syria and Yemen that would warrant for those nations to receive the sort of support they are getting from the U.S. in fighting terrorism that your nation is currently denying Nigeria?”
So how come all of a sudden, the U.S. seems more interested in the Nigerian Elections beyond helping Nigeria to fight Terrorism which if it had done well would have helped Nigeria to be better prepared to hold the elections as scheduled?

Four, I would urge your department to desist from giving more impetus to already growing notion within the Nigerian Polity that “The U.S. government actively supports the Nigerian Opposition and would prefer to have a Nigerian of Northern-Nigerian origin with a Muslim Religious background to become the next President of Nigeria in order to help maintain a certain political balance within the Nigerian Polity” - and I am sure that one sure way to distance yourself from this misconception would be for you to respect the Nigerian Constitution by allowing the people of Nigeria to determine their own fate within the ambits of that same constitution by refusing to sign-up to the propaganda being spread by the opposition and their partners within civil society and intellectual class – at home and in the diaspora – that suggests the incumbent government has other ulterior motives aside those given by INEC and indeed other Nigerians, using myself as an example of such people, as I have already enumerated within this letter as the real reasons why a push in these elections’ dates has been necessitated at this time.

Five, those suggesting to your office and indeed the Obama administration that these postponements are similar to efforts to truncate our Democracy similar to the June 12 polls should be deemed a bunch of Alarmists and nothing more because while the that election indeed took place; and a winner was well-known to all before it was infamously annulled, this oncoming polls has not yet taken been conducted neither can the opposition provide you with any verifiable poll – local or international – even remotely suggesting that it will these elections – and as I see it, claiming victory in an election that has not yet been held would be tantamount to heating up the polity ahead of the polls that could result in a repeat of the post-2011 elections pogrom that led to the systematic killing of 800 Nigerians; burning down of 350 Churches; and displacement of 65,000 Nigerians – all within the space of about 3-4 days!

I close by reminding you of the comments you made while you were in Lagos last month thus: “So let me be clear: Anyone who participates in, plans, or calls for widespread or systematic violence against the civilian population must be held accountable, including by ineligibility for an American visa. Violence has no place in democratic elections, and I can guarantee you that the perpetrators of such violence would not be welcome in the United States of America.”

I dare say that this would be a good time for you, your department and the Obama administration to remind the various parties in these elections that you are very serious about that statement.

An Indian father has been arrested for attempted murder after trying to bury his ten-year old daughter alive. Locals in Putia village, in Tripura, northeast India, alerted police that Abul Hussein was trying to bury his daughter in the backyard of his home. When police arrived at his home he had had tied his daughter's hands with rope and taped her mouth before burying her up to her chest.

Police said that Hussein disliked girls and tried to kill his ten-year-old daughter Rukshena while his wife was away from their home. He was desperate for a son and hated that he had a daughter. Senior police official Pradip Dey said: 'We received a call from a villager telling us that a man was trying to kill his daughter by burying her alive. Our team immediately reached the house and found Rukshena.

'We rescued her and arrested Abul Hussein for attempted murder. He is now in judicial custody until his trial.'

After burying Ruskshena up to her waist her mother returned home but Hussein temporarily threw a bamboo basket over her head, intending to finish the job later. But his wife grew suspicious and called neighbours for help. She claimed she was already worried about her husband's love for their daughter.

When neighbours found Ruskshena buried Hussein was beaten before police arrived. Ruskshena was admitted into a local hospital after falling seriously ill on January 16 but was discharged after a few days. She is now back with her mother and is being protected by her mother's relatives. In many parts of India, parents consider daughters an economic burden while sons are seen as the breadwinners in the family. They are also seen as the child to continue the family's legacy and are often preferred to female children.

The huge cultural preference often leads to abortions of female fetuses or decimation against girls by denying them access to education. India's sex ratio of 943 females for 1000 males has been an ongoing concern for Indian governments. And to generate awareness to save female children and empower women, the new government has launched an ambitious Beti Bachao, Beti Padao campaign, translating as 'Save Girl Child, Educate Girl Child'.

Abu Dhabi, sponsors of Manchester City, now looks set to have its name in front of one of the world’s most emblematic stadiums – the Santiago Bernabeu. The Arab Emirate that has bankrolled Manchester City entered into a financial partnership with Real Madrid last November and for around £15million a year over a reported 20-year period they have won the naming rights for the club’s stadium according to Diario AS.

Coca-Cola and Microsoft had both shown an interest in having their name on the Bernabeu but the race looks to have been won by the Spanish energy company Cepsa which in turn is owned by the IPIC (International Petroleum Investment Company) which is owned by the Abu Dhabi government.

Madrid-based Cepsa is Spain’s fourth largest industrial group in terms of turnover, while IPIC, formed in 1984, has invested in 18 leading companies within the energy and related sectors across the globe. In November of last year when the three-year tie-up between IPIC and Real announced by Madrid, president Florentino Perez was caught on camera saying the stadium will be called ‘IPIC or Cespa, whatever they want’. According to the AS report the sponsors have settled for ‘Abu Dhabi Bernabeu’.

The renaming will not take place until the stadium is remodelled. Planning permission for the £375m project is currently stalled because of a European Commission enquiry into possible illegal state aid. Real Madrid are currently finalising financing for the redevelopement and the somewhat unpopular sale of the stadium’s name is seen as one way to raise funds towards that end.

It was revealed last week that Real are the world’s richest club in terms of revenue, raking in a staggering £459.5m in 2013-14 and the renaming of the stadium to earn extra cash is certain to anger supporters of this traditional club. The iconic venue was opened in 1947 and named after the club’s former chairman Santiago Bernabeu Yeste and has hosted four European Cup finals and the 1982 World Cup final.

The £300m Abu Dhabi investment will be the club’s most lucrative deal in its history and, as well as helping fund the redevelopment of the famous old ground, will give Real the best chance of staying ahead of La Liga rivals Barcelona. It was revealed this week that the Catalan giants are reviewing their £123.4m with Qatar Sports Investments which expires next year and is almost certain to increase.

The ugly incident took place at Eleyele police barrack, Ibadan.The woman pictured above almost killed her 12-year old house-help. According to the source , she knocked off her tooth, poured hot water on her and nearly blinded her. Neighbours intervened before the woman did more harm to the little girl. Her reason was that the girl swept and didn’t clean the dinning table. The source also says that the little girl has been admitted in an undisclosed hospital and the woman is currently being detained. American singer, songwriter, record producer and actor, William Ray Norwood Jr., popularly known as Ray J, does not seem to find anything strange in living close to his ex, Kim Kardashian. In fact, an American gossip site, tmz.com, described him as a ‘bad habit’ that Kim just could not kick. Why? Because Ray J just wrote a $2.7m (N494m) offer to buy a Hidden Hills mansion eight doors down from that of Kim and her spouse, Kanye West. It was reported that Ray and his business manager, David Weintraub, perused the grounds last week and then wrote the offer for the beautiful mansion.

Is the guy really okay? Is he still obsessed with Kim Kardashian? He’s really courting trouble.
