Floating around the globe, drifting from country to country, never staying in one place long enough to get bored …  If you like travelling, life on the Freedom Ship, the world’s first floating city, sounds perfect.

There’s only a couple of hitches – it’s not built yet, and it’s going to look an awful lot like a multi-storey carpark when it is.
Its designers have released computer-generated photographs of what they hope the mile-long vessel will look like. It would have enough room for 50,000 permanent residents within its 25 storeys and boasts schools, hospitals, art galleries, shops, parks, an aquarium and a casino. It would even have its own airport on the roof, with a runway serving small private and commercial aircraft carrying up to 40 passengers each. Roger M Gooch, director and vice-president of Florida-based firm Freedom Ship International, said: ‘The Freedom Ship will be the largest vessel ever built, and the first ever floating city.’

His company is trying to raise the estimated £6billion needed to turn the dream, which has been several years in the planning, into an ocean-going reality. ‘This will be a very heavily capitalised project and the global economy in the last few years hasn’t been too inviting for unproven progressive projects like ours,’ he added. ‘[But] in the last six months we’ve been getting more interest in the project and we are hopeful we will raise the $1billion (£600million) to begin construction.’ The ship would spend 70 per cent of its time anchored off major cities and the rest sailing between countries.

He's been living with his wonderful family for 30+ years. One day, a woman shows up at his house claiming to be a nurse at his hospital of birth. She had a lengthy discussion with his parents before he were summoned, amidst tears, to join the discussion. She went on to reveal that he was mistakenly switched at birth and that she'd been trying to track his family ever since. She showed him a picture of his "family" and he actually looked a bit like his "dad'.

What would you do if you were in his shoes? Return to your "real" family or stick with the family you are used to?

Lawmakers in the 36 State Houses of Assembly have received about N12 billion in salaries and allowances in the irst two years of their tenure and passed 601 bills, most of which were initiated by the governors, Daily Trust investigations revealed.

There are 978 members in the state legislatures, soaking up about N6 billion per annum in emoluments. A state legislator receives about N6 million per annum, comprising basic salaries and other perquisites, according to a Daily Trust analysis based on records obtained from the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC). The RMAFC documents were obtained officially through a Freedom of Information Act request filed by this newspaper.

With these emoluments, a state lawmaker earns more than 24 times the country’s Gross Domestic Product per person (GDP). This means the legislator’s package is 24 times what each Nigerian citizen is worth when the nation’s total wealth is shared by the population. According to RMAFC records, a state legislator receives an annual basic salary of N1.34 million; accommodation, N802,335; vehicle maintenance, N267,445; and recess allowance, N133,772.

The lawmaker also receives, once in four years, a vehicle loan of N5.3 million, furniture allowance of N2 million and N2.6 million as severance gratuity. Other yearly emoluments are N334,306 for constituency allowance; N334,306 for domestic staff; N133,772 for utilities; and N66,861 as newspapers allowance.
In addition, the state lawmaker is entitled to N25,000 as duty tour allowance (DTA) per night and 600 US dollars estacode while on foreign trips per night.

Principal officers of the assemblies are entitled to responsibility allowance, while the speaker and his deputy are entitled to security and robe allowances as well as special assistants and legislative aides. Each lawmaker is also entitled to medicals and special assistants. The cost of maintaining the state lawmakers is coming to light four months after Daily Trust published details of similar fat-cat emoluments enjoyed by their counterparts in the Senate and House of Representatives, who are on top of the global MPs’ salaries chart.

Executive bills
Daily Trust investigations revealed that despite receiving over N12 billion from June 2011 to June 2013, the lawmakers only passed 601 bills into law. They appear to be merely waiting to rubber-stamp bills forwarded to them by the executive, as most of the bills passed in the two-year period were annual appropriation bills and supplementary budget bills submitted by the state governors. Also, there are many states whose assemblies did not pass a single individual member’s bill into law within the period.

In the two years from June 2011 to June 2012, the 202 state lawmakers in the North West passed 122 bills (Katsina State not included as details are not available) and collected N2.424 billion; while 176 legislators from South West received N2.112 billion and passed 107 bills into law (with the exception of those from Ekiti, whose records could not be obtained). The 158 lawmakers from the South-South, with the exception of Edo where records have not been obtained, had passed 69 bills into law and received N1.896 billion as salaries and allowance.

The North East has 156 state assembly members, who passed 130 bills (with the exception of Borno) after collecting N1.872 billion as emoluments. The North Central zone, with 158 legislators had collected N1.896 billion and passed into law 125 bills; while the 128 lawmakers from South East had passed 48 bills (with the exception of those from Anambra and Abia states whose records could not be obtained) and received N1.536 billion as emoluments.

What have you been up to lately?
My acting is still moving on. I am still the same old Ayo Mogaji. I am still working and not yet tired. After my movie “Jombo” in 2006, I have not produced any other movie. I have stopped producing because the market is not encouraging, so I am just a working actress. If you can pay for my job, I work with you. I just returned back to the country. I am moving in and out of Nigeria by virtue of marriage. My husband is British and it seems like everyone knows about that. He’s Dr. Ayodele Oduleye, a psychotherapist and British by birth. He lives there. I just came back from USA where I went to anchor a show.

You went off the scene at a time, why?
There was never a time I went off the scene. The only issue was I decided to limit some of my activities, because I can’t get lesser pay or do anything substandard. This is the only career I have got so if you are under paying me or not being reasonable with your offer, I move out of your job. I didn’t go anywhere; I was still in the country, I was still working. As we are talking right now, this year they have released several such as “Igba’bajo,” “Towotomo,” “Moberu,” Arinzo 1&2. Just at the tail end of last year, they released “Moberu.” While I was in the US, they released a couple of movies like “Mama Insurance.” So there has never been one time I rested on my oars. I also featured in soap operas like “Tarima.” I also used to do “Nowhere to be Found.” What I’m saying is that even when I am not in the country, you see me on your TV screen every now and then.

Armed bandits raped a 17 year-old female student of the University of Calabar ( name withheld) to a state of coma. The robbers raided the hostel she and several other colleagues are living on Tuesday night in Calabar. Vanguard reports that the robbers, according to a fair complexioned male student who gave his name as Ngoli, attacked the hostel located at Mount Zion Road/ Inyang Edem Street at about 2am and raped all the female students and carted away all their laptops and cell phones.

“They started by firing warning shots into the air to warn us that they came for serious business and thereafter went from room to room battering everybody and raping the female students one after the other”. He said the girl that went into coma was still a virgin and that made all the robbers want to have a taste of her. “The first one to pounce on her announced to the rest that she was still a virgin and that made everyone of them go after her and in the process she bled seriously yet they would not allow her go”.

Operatives of the Special Fraud Unit, SFU, Milverton Road, Ikoyi, Lagos have arrested a 24-year-old man who posed as a lady to defraud a United States of America couple of $42,497, purportedly for the purchase of a property in Lagos. The suspect, identified as Olafinraye Adedamola, admitted the offence while being paraded yesterday. He was said to have connived with a Malaysian lady to defraud the couple. The Malaysian lady, according to him, was his Facebook friend, adding that he had intended to use the money to further his studies in a tertiary institution.
