Politics / Without Buhari, We Would Be Refugees By Now – Segun Oni by tinziemaine(m): 10:47am On Sep 30, 2016
Engr. Segun Oni, former governor of Ekiti State and now Deputy national chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress APC, in this interview, he speaks on the current economic recession among other issues.
Some Nigerians have accused the APC of not knowing what to do with the economy. How true is this?
Well, the public is right to expect that we would do magic, but the right thing is, there is no magic way out of the problems on ground for Nigeria. The economy was trumatized by a government whose only agenda was to win another round. Therefore, everything that they could put into trying to win a second round even bastardising the economy were done, and we are all here now. Fortunately for them, I would say they are not there any longer. The reality on ground is that if the previous Government were in power, by now, Nigeria would have virtually packed up; may be many of us would be refugees by now. So, it is very easy not to remember where we are coming from. Yes, we were elected to do the impossible, we will do our best. I just want to plead that people should give us more realistic expectations. This economy must work, we must get Nigeria back, but it is not as quick as most people would imagine or just by a touch of the hand. So, people are entitled to their expectations, we as a government, we will do our best to ensure that the end would justify this cause. We were not elected to run Nigeria for one or two years; we were elected to run Nigeria for four years and before we get to an appreciable length of time I am sure and confident that we would begin to see very obvious changes.
Nigerians are worried about some obvious inconsistencies in your economic policies. Are you not worried?
There is a difference between extension workers and teachers; teachers would teach in schools and extension workers would work to promote agricultural output. You see, this would tell you that there is active thinking, and there is an active programme to get people involved. I think what we just need to see is a breakthrough that people would begin to see. Yes, it has started, it is always like this when you are so overwhelmed and are trying to make changes.
Impact on people
Yes, we want to bring in teachers, yes we want to bring in extension workers, yes we want to do some other things that would impact on people very quickly. It is not confusion; it is that we want to do all these, and we will do all those, but it is not going to happen in a twincle of an eye. Nigerians should still expect that we will do what we promised we would do. Some of us are still very confident that we will do it. If we have doubts, our confidence level would not be what it is now; it won’t be this high.
What is your take on the claim that the APC lacks experts to manage the economy and hence the current challenges?
Experts to manage the economy? There are experts; there is an economic management team headed by the vice president, and I want to tell you that, yes he is a lawyer, but if there is anything this vice president cannot do about the economy, no other vice president in the history of Nigeria would have made any attempt.
Even an economist?
You see, we should not quickly forget where people are coming from; yes, this is a lawyer, he is a professor of no mean rating, who has done a lot of consultancy work for the World Bank, the African Union (AU) and so on and he has a team that he is heading, it is not a one man team. I know within there, the economic adviser, is a guy that all of us had known when we were at school as one of the best brains we can find on the terrain, which also had a good career in the foreign service. Look, things would work and I am confident things would work, but yes we are overwhelmed by the high expectations of people right now. It is normal, but if anybody says because we don’t have people to manage the economy, which team could have managed the economy as it is now better than we are doing? Is it the team that destroyed it? That brought it down? Look, Nigerians don’t seem to also complain when they were buying dollars as if it was going out of fashion; the legal tender during electioneering and campaign was dollars. If you were eyeing other people’s currencies at that height, you were making useless your currency, how do you think you will make an overnight recovery? It is not easy. Nigeria is lucky because only very few countries in the world have gone through the kind of experience we went through, and they would still be talking the way we are talking. Yes, the situation is very bad, but we would get out of it.
The government claims to have succeeded in technically defeating Boko Haram, but some bandits seem to have taken over, attacking communities. Can you respond to this?
This personally worries me because these gunmen, who suddenly became so notorious invading villages and so on are people that have always been around. But my guess is that many of these are sponsored by people who have so much money and want to create instability. I believe that many of these have political motives and people who just wanted to trouble the government of the day, who don’t want peace because they believe peace would not be what they would want to see.
Political motives
I don’t think the security situation is as terrible as it used to, no, it is not. Therefore, as far as security is concerned I would say that we have earned the pass-mark, but we can do better
How would you react to the comments of the president that the Niger Delta militants would get the same treatment as Boko Haram insurgent?
I think it is a warning. You know at times a father would also warn his child not to cross the line so that he would not be hard on such a child. I think it is a warning. And that warning, let us also see it in good style, let us try and calm nerves down because the president is the president of everybody and it is in his interest and our interest that things must run normal and I believe that such warning, such body language and so on would also have a way of encouraging people, who genuinely want to see peace to go after it.
You seem so confident in the ability of your party to deliver on its campaign promises. Can you set a timeframe within, which you think these set objectives can be delivered?
I am not a soothsayer and I don’t like to say what I do not have control over, but I know that things would get better. www.vanguardngr.com/2016/09/without-buhari-refugees-now-segun-oni/

Politics / How We Can Come Out Of Recession – Tinubu, Atiku, Chike-obi by tinziemaine(m): 6:21am On Sep 30, 2016
Recession: FORMER Lagos State Governor and National Leader, All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has said that the economic recession the country is going through requires sacrifice from all Nigerians to see the country through.

Speaking at the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers’ investiture of its President, Mr. Oluwaseyi Emmanuel Abe, on Wednesday night in Lagos, he said Nigeria is blessed with both human and natural resources, which it can properly harness to come out of the recession.

The APC leader also spoke on the significance of
electricity in driving economic development,
recalling how Lagos State invested in private power
project during his time as governor.

Also speaking at the event, former Vice President
Atiku Abubakar, said the country should rely on
taxes and not oil, arguing that Nigeria’s biggest
problem is addiction to oil revenues. He decried the
belief that the country is doomed “unless oil flows
and oil money fills the Federation Account for our
tiers of government to share.”

At the investiture, former AMCON CEO, Mustapha
Chike-Obi, spoke on the theme “Nigeria’s Economy:
Growth, The Only Imperative.”

In his presentation, Chike-Obi urged the country to
borrow to finance specific capital projects, saying
the fact that borrowing was misused in the past
does not mean borrowing as an economic option is
wrong.

Politics / Edo Election: Buhari Has Fulfilled His Promise For Free & Fair Election- Amaechi by tinziemaine(m): 8:25pm On Sep 29, 2016
Edo election: Minister of Transportation, Mr Chibuike Amaechi, says outcome of Edo poll is a fulfilment of President Muhammadu Buhari`s promise of ensuring free, fair and credible elections in the country.

He stated this at the Rivers South-East Senatorial District rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday at Ngo in Andoni Local Government Area of the state.

Represented by Dr Dakuku Peterside, Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Amaechi said that after the March 19 rerun elections in Rivers, he reminded Buhari of his promise to conduct free and fair elections in the country.

“I went to the president because there were more guns in hands of criminals than Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in hands of peaceful people during the March 19 legislative rerun elections.

“The president assured me that to signpost the fact that never again will electorate be held hostage by gunmen, watch out for Edo governorship election.

“If we have free, fair and credible election in Edo, then you take it that same will happen in Rivers, Buhari assured me,” he said.

Amaechi therefore said that with the peaceful conduct of the Edo election, Buhari had fulfilled his promise and Rivers people would reap from that pledge.

“In a peaceful atmosphere during elections, no South-South state will vote for opposition party. So, Rivers people will vote to be in the mainstream in the pending rerun elections.

“I want to assure Rivers people that there will be free and fair election and APC will come out victorious,” he said.

According to Amaechi, APC has the best candidates to represent Rivers effectively in the National and State assemblies.

“With APC members in the state assembly, the legislature will have its colour; Rivers people will have strong voice in the National Assembly,” he said.

Politics / We’ll Unleash Full Potentials Of Nigeria’s Manufacturing Sector – Buhari by tinziemaine(m): 7:35pm On Sep 29, 2016
President Muhammadu Buhari has assured the
Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) that his
administration will eradicate bottlenecks and create
an environment that can boost manufacturing. The
President stated this at the 44 Annual General
Meeting of MAN in Abuja on Thursday.

According to him, the need to boost manufacturing
has become imperative in view of the fact that the
“manufacturing sector is well positioned to be a
major driver of Nigeria’s economic growth’’. He
maintained that government was focused on
implementing necessary policies and strategies
aimed at unleashing the full potentials of
manufacturing in Nigeria.

According to him, his administration will rely
heavily on the association’s ideas and inputs at all
stages of formulation and implementation of new
industrial policies. “The manufacturing sector is
well positioned to be a major driver of Nigeria’s
economic growth because of our immense natural
resources and the entrepreneurial spirit of
Nigerians.

“Government is therefore focused on implementing
necessary policies and strategies aimed at
unleashing the full potentials of manufacturing in
Nigeria. “We will rely heavily on your ideas and
inputs at all stages of formulation and
implementation of new industrial policies.

“For our part, we will remove bottlenecks and
create a more business friendly environment. “Our
strategic plan to boost manufacturing activities in
the country is supported by the Nigeria Industrial
Revolution Plan (NIRP) and the National Enterprises
Development Programme (NEDEP).

“These programmes, present a clear road map
towards an industrialised Nigerian
economy.’’ Buhari stated that his administration is
convinced that the key to the nation’s economic
diversification and subsequent survival lies in the
agriculture and manufacturing sector.

He said that a strong manufacturing sector would
create more jobs and wealth for the citizens, adding
that it would usher in sustainable economic
prosperity “because we will produce what we
consume as a nation and generate foreign
exchange by exporting any surplus’’.

The President said that his administration was
working on improving the patronage of locally
made goods, bridging the gap between skills
required by industry and those provided by the
educational institutions and access to finance for
the Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises (SMEs).
He added that the Federal Government recognised
that MAN and other members of the Organised
Private Sector (OPS) were key stakeholders in the
journey. He said, “we will continue our engagement
with you.’’ The President stated that he was
inspired by the association’s commitment to a
great Nigeria.

He, therefore, urged them to join hands with
government in making the ongoing efforts by
government to revive the nation’s economy a
success. He also urged them to ensure that the
outcome of their deliberations would be to the
benefit of all Nigerians, adding: “I look forward to
receiving a communiqué of the deliberations from
this meeting.

“As events unfold in the coming months, many of
you will be called upon to play critical roles in the
implementation of this administration’s agenda. “I
implore you to avail us your wealth of experience so
that together we can uplift our nation’s economy
and social well-being.’’

In his remarks, the President of MAN, Dr Frank
Jacobs, commended the government for its new
forex policy of allocating 60 per cent of all available
foreign exchange to the manufacturing sector for
the importation of raw materials and machinery.

He also praised the Buhari-led administration for
the efforts it is making towards improving
infrastructure across the country. Jacobs also
saluted the government’s efforts to end insurgency
in the North Eastern part of the country. He said the
efforts were yielding fruitful results.

Politics / Re: Nigeria’s Recession Not As Bad As Painted — APBN by tinziemaine(m): 10:18am On Sep 29, 2016
Fowarding:
Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria, APBN, said in Lagos yesterday that the economic recession in the country was not bad as it was being painted.

According to the group, all government needs to do is to focus on governance with attendant needs of the citizenry.

Outgoing-President/Chairman in Council of the body, Mr. Gabriel Fasoto, who made the remark at the 32nd Annual General Assembly, AGA, of the Association, said Nigeria had the resources to move out of recession as quickly as possible.

He said: “It is only the harmonisation of these resources that we (Nigeria) need and only the professionals can assist government to quickly get out of the current situation.

We have everything it requires to get out of this mess. “It was recently we discovered that government was not taking us seriously, we then felt the need to come together as a united front and then proffer suggestions to government.

“It took time before government realised that they are supposed to take professionals more seriously. I want to assure you that they have increased the number of professionals in the country’s affairs.

We are partnering with them, and we believe that they will take our advices more seriously than ever before.”

Fasoto, who stated that the anti-corruption war waged by Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is already yielding positive results, but noted that implementation of the Treasury Single Account, TSA, had provided greater visibility of government
revenues and cash flow between June 2015 and April 2016, with total collected hitting N3 trillion.

He urged government at all levels to endeavour to translate the success recorded to good governance, restating the APBN’s commitment to the development of the country by offering its services to the government and its agencies.

Politics / Ambode, Obiano, Ugwuanyi, Tinubu, Others For World Igbo Day In Lagos by tinziemaine(m): 9:47am On Sep 29, 2016
LAGOS—The governor of Lagos State Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode is expected to host World Igbo Day in Lagos, and the governors from Anambra and Enugu states, including Asiwaju Bola Tinubu are some of the top dignitaries expected at the event, taking place in Lagos as the celebration kicks off in Enugu today.

All plans and preparation from the Lagos State chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo to mark the world Igbo day celebration taking place in October are in top gear. This was made known by the President of Lagos State chapter of Ohaneze Ndibgo, Chief Fabian Onwughalu in Lagos.

He said they have received confirmation to most of the invitations sent out. Former governorship aspirant for Anambra Statein in the 2013 election, Ifeanyi Ubah is expected to be the guest speaker, alongside The President of Coscharis Motors, Dr. Cosmas Maduka.

On the front burner for this year’s event are issues of both common and national interest including the celebration of the Igbo culture and heritage. Onwughalu said that the Igbos in Lagos have been neglected by this administration, because none of them were considered as members of Ambode, s cabinet despite the fact that they own 50 percent of the lands in Lagos.

He however pleaded with governor Ambode to grant Certificate of Occupancy to the landlords in order to build their confidence . Answering questions on the reason for two fractions of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Onwughalu said his group is the true authentic Ohaneze Ndigbo. Speaking further, held and he emerged as the president.

The woman leader of the group, Lady Chidozie Ada Ofoegbu said the women are fully ready for the big day, to support their husbands, present the kola nuts, and also to display the various cultural dance steps.

Also present at the Lagos secretariat to support the forth coming event are, His Royal Highness ( HRH) Igwe Fred Nwajaju of Isolo/Oshodi and Ajao community, representing the royal fathers, representatives from the various local government, leaders from various markets in Lagos state amongst others.

Politics / I Didn’t Visit Edo On Election Day- El-rufai by tinziemaine(m): 6:35pm On Sep 28, 2016
Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, has refuted allegations by Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the Edo State governorship election, that he (El- Rufai) visited the state today, during the ongoing elections.
Recall that Ize-Iyamu had alleged that El-Rufai and his Lagos State counterpart, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode were in the state on Wednesday.
But, the Lagos State Government swiftly debunked the allegation, saying Ambode was overseas, and could not have been in Edo State.
A statement by the Special Assistant to the Kaduna State Governor on (Media and Publicity), Samuel Aruwan, on Wednesday, said: “Malam Nasir El-Rufai did not visit Edo State today, Wednesday, 28 September 2016. Contrary to the fiction peddled by one of the candidates who made the accusation on live television. Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has kindly rubbished the lie and made clear that Malam Nasir El-Rufai is nowhere near the state.
“This clarification is made only to affirm a material fact. But it is important to stress that the laws of this country do not prevent any citizen from being in any part of the country. While movement may be restricted on election days, that is not the same thing as construing the presence of any citizen in a state holding elections as illegal, unusual or irregular.
“A specious attempt, similar to that made by a candidate in Edo today, was made by chieftains of a political party during the last governorship election in Anambra State. During the Anambra elections, security agents tried to cast a Nigerian as alien simply for being in another state during an election, restricted Malam El-Rufai to his hotel room.
“Malam El-Rufai challenged this violation of his right in court. And a court ruled in his favour. Those who are seeking power should be careful not to be violating constitutional rights in that quest. And they should not say what they do not know to be true.” www.vanguardngr.com/2016/09/i-didnt-visit-edo-on-election-day-el-rufai/

Phones / Blackberry To Stop Production Of Phones by tinziemaine(m): 6:06pm On Sep 28, 2016
BlackBerry announced Wednesday it would halt in-house production of smartphones, marking the end of an era for the once-dominant Canadian tech firm.

Ontario-based BlackBerry said it had reached a deal to outsource production of its phones to an Indonesian partner, and would instead concentrate on software and services.

Handsets with the BlackBerry name will be produced under license by PT Tiphone Mobile Indonesia Tbk, a statement by the firms said.

BlackBerry, which a decade ago was among the world’s largest smartphone makers, has seen its global market share slip to less than one percent as Apple and Android devices have dominated.

As the market shifted, BlackBerry has sought to refocus on software, including security applications, and the latest announcement takes the company out of the handset market entirely.

“We are reaching an inflection point with our strategy. Our financial foundation is strong, and our pivot to software is taking hold,” said chief executive John Chen, pointing to a doubling of software revenue in the last fiscal year.

“The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners. This allows us to reduce capital requirements and enhance return on invested capital.”

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company has made several efforts in recent years to find new customer niches as its smartphone handset sales continued to stagnate in the face of competition.

It had hoped its first Android-operating smartphone launched last year would help restore the company to its former glory.

But sales were lackluster.

Earlier this year, BlackBerry announced it was killing off its Classic smartphone with a physical keyboard — once the workhorse of the smartphone market — as part of a modernization of its lineup.

But the company has continued to bleed red, posting on Wednesday a US$372 million loss in its second quarter ending August 31.

Revenues also fell to US$334 million, from US$490 million during the same period last year. The company did not report details on its smartphone shipments.

– Rebooting BlackBerry –

Some analysts praised the decision to get out of smartphone sales, at a time when the worldwide smartphone market has turned relatively flat.

“The devices business has been a distraction for both BlackBerry and investors for a number of years now,” International Data Corporation analyst John Jackson told AFP.

The end is “good news,” he said, noting an uptick in BlackBerry’s stock price in morning trading.

Shares rose more than four percent to US$8.22 in New York at 11:00 am local time (1500 GMT). This price, however, remains far below a five-year high set in October 2011 of US$23.97.

Originally known as Research in Motion, the company introduced its first internet-connected devices in the early 2000s, and earned a dedicated following of “CrackBerry” addicts.

But its luster faded with the introduction of the iPhone in 2007 and the large number of low-costs Android handsets that followed.

By moving out of hardware, BlackBerry can focus on its various business services such as messaging, cybersecurity and tracking connected devices.

Jackson said the move “should help investors, BlackBerry customers, and the company itself focus squarely on the software and services business which is fiercely competitive in its own right, but also the business that BlackBerry has been in all along.”

However analyst Michael Walkley at Canaccord Genuity said the new strategy has risks as well.

“We believe the lowered focus on hardware could have an adverse impact on its installed base of loyal BlackBerry hardware customers, potentially switching to new software and security solutions on competing smartphones over time,” he said in a research note.

Politics / Ize-iyamu Lied, Ambode Not In Edo- LASG by tinziemaine(m): 5:38pm On Sep 28, 2016
The Lagos State Government on Wednesday dismissed allegations made by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu alleging that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and his Kaduna State counterpart, Mallam Nasir El Rufai were in Edo State for the election.

In a statement signed by the State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Steve Ayorinde, the government described the allegations by the PDP candidate as reckless and disgraceful.

Ayorinde while clarifying the position of the government said Ambode was presently overseas for an official assignment and in any case had no business being in Edo State on Election Day.

“The Lagos State Governor served as the chairman Campaign Council constituted by the All Progressives Congress and his duty ended 24 hours before the election because no campaign was supposed to hold 24 hours to the election and having completed his assignment which included appearing with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Grand Rally in Edo State earlier in the month, Governor Ambode has no reason to return to Edo State on election day and for this sort of lie to have been peddled by a candidate who is supposed to be a pastor, is reckless and disgraceful,” he said

Ayorinde said Governor Ambode had clearly enumerated his position on the election during the grand finale of the campaign when he said that like Lagos where continuity has moved perfectly well, Edo State also deserved continuity in governance.

“That message has been passed and has been accepted by majority of Edo indigenes and therefore there would not be any need for the Governor to return to Edo on Election Day. The general public and security operatives are hereby advised to ignore the desperate lies of Pastor Ize-Iyamu,” Ayorinde said.

Politics / Imo Adults To Pay N3,000 Development Levy - Rochas Okorocha by tinziemaine(m): 8:20am On Sep 27, 2016
Citing the need to replicate development in all 637
communities of Imo State, Governor Rochas
Okorocha has directed all taxable adults in the 27
local councils to pay N3,000 as development levy.

The governor, who gave the directive at the weekend while inaugurating the state's Development Council and presenting adult registers to government representatives in Owerri, urged the people to face current challenges and pay for their benefits, adding that every taxable adult must register.

House of Assembly Speaker, Acho Ihim, reminded the audience of the Imo State Traditional Rulers and
Autonomous Law which mandates that a community must have a minimum population of 2,000 for it to be recognised by government.

The Commissioner for Community Government,
Culture and Traditional Affairs, Innocent Eke, said the Community Government Council (CGC), put in place by the current administration, had decentralised power and empowered communities, as the people now participate in the management of their affairs.

The chairman, Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Sam Ohiri, assured execution of the order.

Religion / Re: My Favourite Bible Passage: The Palm Tree by tinziemaine(m): 8:12pm On Sep 25, 2016
MrPresident1:
Seun, you are completely ignorant of the meaning of the contents of the Bible. I just checked frontpage now to see that this thread is now there and mischievously titled with 'naughty passage'.

To help your ignorance, I will provide an explanation but like everyone else you are free to take it or leave it. Know also that the Bible version you have quoted from is a heavily watered down version created by wicked people to keep the truth of the Bible obscured so that their slaves may continue to be slaves.

In summary, the songs of Solomon is the Bible book of a story of love between Solomon and his bride. Anthropomorphically speaking, Solomon is God while Israel (the people) is his bride. The real and true Israel of the Bible are the Negros who lost favour with God hence their devolution hence their present condition world wide today. God is the life and wisdom of Negros, but due to idolatry, we lost His presence and now grope about in darkness at noon, a lost people. But He has promised that His anger will not last forever, and He would regather us.

The time for this regathering is nigh, when the Negroes the true Israelites of the Bible will assume world leadership again, our birthright that was truncated for only about 2 days will be restored to us.

Solomon is Adam, Israel is Eve. Eve corrupted Adam; Solomon's numerous women corrupted him into idolatry.
