OP I hail o. Very well written piece.

As much as we know these telcos and the NCC tend to say a lot of unreasonable things, but did MTN’s CEO actually say the FG should ban Whatsapp and Viber?

I have read all the newspaper reports, and I also stumbled on the MTN statement posted on their LinkedIn page (see link below)
(https://www.linkedin.com/hp/update/urn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A6212708488792010752?pathWildcard=urn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A6212708488792010752&actorCompanyId=2594006&trk=cp-notifications-click-on-like).

I might be wrong, but their CEO did not say that they should ban Whatsapp and Viber. He only said that those businesses are affecting telco’s profits. Unlike the last time, Channels TV didn’t even show a video of him saying anything as such. So is it that he was misquoted by the newspapers?

Please, replies needed

Amen!

My brother will be starting his private biz soon. Our family had to contribute money for him, pending till he gets a new job. But he says he wants to collect his money today so that he will have money to start.

I blame Buhari and his APC govt for this. After they fined MTN, things have not been the same for them... Now they have brought indians to come and manage their call centre, and their office is outside Lagos. So a lot of the current staff cannot move.

They are not up to 4000. How many staff MTN get? sad

I heard that a lot of the call centre staff had already moved last year to work with ISON, the new contractor. These ones left here are the ones that serve MTN's top customers.

BTW, I just called my brother. He said the place has calmed down since even though they are not working.

The picture you are showing is when someone from MTN was addressing you guys. My brother is in that picture sef! grin grin

According to him, the woman said they had spoken to CNSSL and that they promised that you will be paid by noon today.

Today is the 30th, so you cannot be paid until you finish working na!

MTN Nigeria laying off Contract Staff without been paid their full salary. No gratuity, no pension, no thank you mail to people who have spent at least 5years to like 14years of their life.

They did the worst last week by telling them to do photocopy of their ID cards and return the main ID'S with the staff left with a sheet of paper without been paid and still expected to work. They also harassed the contract staffs searching them with mobile police armed with guns as if they are criminals. This is outright injustice....

No mails communicated yet on the mode of payment for the 15days they worked as their salary is been calculated from 15th of previous month to 16th of present month, but the remaining days of 16th- 30th september is not paid with their leave days remaining and also unpaid leaves.

We call on concerns Nigerians and appropriate authorities to help them fight these course.

When I got the message, first thing I did was call my account officer and I was told it is absolutely safe. All the registration is just for identification.

I have gone through lots of sites and seen that the possibilities are endless, at least internationally. Maybe it is a viable or lucrative setup one can look into or is there one in Nigeria already.

How much it will cost to sent up a 3D printing center and the general possibilities within the Nigerian system?
Investment / Re: N1.04tn Fine: MTN Apologises, Seeks Leniency by titus3: 11:12am On Nov 05, 2015

Ben Murray Bruce, chairman senate committee on privatisation, has condemned the N1.04tr ($5.2bn) fine imposed on MTN Nigeria, saying it hurts Nigeria more than the telecommunications firm. The fine imposed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) was referred to by the senator as “probably the most damaging action ever taken against Nigeria’s drive for Foreign Direct Investment”. “MTN is not without fault and her actions and inactions are deserving of a strong rebuke from our authorities,” he said. “However, the extent of the fine by the Nigerian Communications Commission is such that it sends a very wrong signal to foreign investors and gives them the impression that Nigeria is in a desperate financial situation due to the sudden drop in crude oil prices and wants to get alternative revenue by any means necessary. “As a patriotic Nigerian I know this is not true. However, I know that perception is also reality. “Foreign investors in Nigeria currently feel vulnerable and those contemplating investing in Nigeria are putting such plans on hold as their boards and management pause to take in the consequence of what just happened to MTN Nigeria. “Many pundits point to the drop in the value of MTN shares in their home country and the temporary suspension in trading of such shares by the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.” He called on the federal government to immediately and publicly take action to regain investors confidence in Nigeria. “What is perhaps going unnoticed is that the action of the Nigerian Communications Commission has also caused a negative ripple effect on the shares of other foreign investors operating in Nigeria even though they have not flouted any of our laws and regulations. “In the long run, the move hurts Nigeria more than it hurts MTN and may be described as cutting our nose in order to spite our face. “I call on the Federal Government to immediately and publicly take steps to remedy the situation and restore investor confidence in Nigeria by resolving this impasse with tact with a view to our long term financial interests rather than our immediate interests. MTN has sought to review the fine to as low as 20 percent of the original value from N1.04tr to N208bn.

Investment / MTN: Foreign Impression Of The NCC Fine. by titus3: 10:20am On Nov 02, 2015
I was reading a story on The Cable - https://www.thecable.ng/interview-nccs-action-mtn-400-year-prison-sentence-traffic-offence-says-okoruwa and had time to do a proper think about MTN's case.

Many might think the fine is justified because they claim being wronged by MTN in one way or another, but if we look closely what do Nigerian’s stand to gain from this fine? For one, if the money was going to be split and I got my share maybe I wouldn’t mind smiley, that’s the selfish part of me.

But looking at the big picture, in a time when Nigeria needs investment badly, how does this fine stand to encourage foreigners to come and set up shop here. The amount MTN has paid in taxes over the years possibly will not come close to this single fine that is imposed. They invest billions in CSR through its MTN Foundation without necessarily having to do so, many beneficiaries have enjoyed their impact over the years, which of the other telcos can lay same claim. How much does the total asset MTN Nigeria cost, I’ve read lots of comments where people have said another company will buy them and I wonder is it that easy?

Fine, we may say they deserve to be punished, but reason suggests that the magnitude can be interpreted globally as Nigeria being an unfriendly market regardless that the company has been a good Corporate citizen. This is just my 2 cents (or is it kobo). I don't know what you think

My compatriots and their parochial mindset toward for-profit organizations . For all I know and care , for-profit organizations foremost priority is to make profit while quality service(s) accompany such thought to make it an effective action and result oriented strategy . Therefore , it is foolhardy for any sane person to expect such organizations to operate on cheap emotional sentiments as been expected by majority of the commenters on this subject under discussion . Outsourcing is not illegal, therefore I see no reason why any sane person should badmouth MTN and their Indian contractors for a decision like this .

You too can become one of their contractors ( vendors ) , since you don't have the financial resources to be their competitor . I am ready to guide -free of charge , any sane and sound person/organization through to establishing effective and profitable outsourcing firm .

NO TRUTH IN PLAN TO SACK STAFF

It has come to our attention that inaccurate information is currently being circulated on social media, alleging plans by MTN Nigeria to dismiss 6000 employees, starting with call centre staff. These rumours are false and designed to spark fear and panic amongst our staff and contractors.

As part of efforts to drive further efficiency towards improving the quality of customer service delivery, MTN has signed a new outsourcing contract with a new organization, which takes effect later in the year.

What this means is that our call centre, which was already outsourced several years ago, will now be managed by a new vendor.

The former vendors – CCNSSL and MacTay Consulting – will remain partners/consultants with MTN Nigeria and will continue to manage other key aspects of our business.

This change, which is in line with global best practices for organisations in our industry, is not exclusive to MTN Nigeria alone. Similar outsourcing arrangements are taking place across other MTN operations in Anglophone (English-speaking) countries across Africa, including South Africa.

We remain committed to delivering quality of service that our customers deserve, guided by a strong culture of best practice people management.

That cannot happen in 4 or 8 years. The city of New York consumes 200GW or electricity. We generate just 3GW in Nigeria.

Moving from 3GW to 200GW doesn't happen in 8 years. Let is start by trying to achieve 45GW which is what is generated in South Africa. Even that is a tall order in 4 or 8 years. Fixing power cannot happen overnight. If we can get to 12MW, which means more Nigerians can have access to electricity and for a little longer than now, then he would have tried.

Nigeria doesn't generate "GW" of electricity, if we did we won't be complaining at all, I believe you meant MW.

MTN condemns attacks on foreigners in South Africa

The management of telecommunications giant in Nigeria, MTN, has condemned the wave of xenophobic attacks targeted at foreigners in South Africa.

In a statement by MTN’s Corporate Services Executive, Akinwale Goodluck, on Tuesday, the company said the attacks constituted an assault on “the much-celebrated, common” African humanity.

“The recent spate of xenophobic violence in Johannesburg and Durban focusing on foreigners and their businesses is unwarranted, and indeed worrisome. In Africa, we are our brother’s keeper; and at MTN, we align with the concerted efforts of the South African government in stopping the attacks and protecting the lives and properties of foreign nationals, most especially Nigerians,” he said.

Goodluck said as a mark of its support to the victims of the attacks, MTN Group had provided financial support to the transit camps, where many were presently being sheltered, adding that the money provided would be used to purchase food, medicals, bedding, clothing and other necessities.

Against the backdrop of some calls for reprisal on some Nigerian businesses with South African affiliation, he said such knee-jerk reactions would be counter-productive and unjustifiable.

He stated, “MTN Nigeria is a Nigerian business employing 99 per cent Nigerians. Out of our over 6,000 staff, only 12 are expatriates; the rest are Nigerians. Also, when you look at our value chain, over 500,000 Nigerians are gainfully employed indirectly by MTN. So, you see that attacking us or boycotting our services will negatively impact Nigerians, the very people we seek to serve and empower.”

Goodluck emphasised MTN’s commitment to Nigeria through continuous investment.

“To date, we have sunk over $15bn in Nigeria through network infrastructure, and we have spent over N10bn on corporate social responsibility. We have built our business based on sustainability in the long term because we are wholly Nigerian,” he said.
