A 25-year-old woman, Victoria Alonge, has been sentenced to one-year in jail for pouring hot oil on her boyfriend, Roland Nna, over his refusal to marry her. Senior Magistrate, Omolola Akindele, summarily sentenced Alonge without an option of fine after the convict admitted, yesterday, to committing the offence at a Karu Senior Magistrates’ court. Alonge was arraigned by the police on a one-count charge of causing grievous hurt on Nna, her boyfriend, who lives in Kurudu, Abuja. The Police Prosecutor, Corporal Paschal Njoku, had earlier told the court that Nna reported the incident at Kurudu Police Station on August 11. Njoku said Alonge went to Nna’s house at about 4:30 a.m. on the fateful day and poured hot oil on him while he was asleep, resulting in grievous hurt to his body. He said she was immediately arrested by the police, based on the report and confession to committing the crime before the police. But while in detention, Alonge threatened to inflict more harm on the victim. The prosecutor urged the court to summarily punish the accused since she did not deny the charge brought against her. In her defence, Alonge told the court that her estranged lover dated her for over four yearmised to marry her, only for him to change his mind after falling in love with another woman in Abuja. “I did that to teach him a bitter lesson because he refused to marry me after dating me for over four years. “He fooled me and my parents and ditched me after finding a new lover here in Abuja. I live in Lagos with my parents,” she said. |

At last, the National Assembly has passed in to law, an Act which disqualifies any Nigerian whose children do not attend public schools in Nigeria, from holding any elective or appointive position , anywhere in Nigeria. In a rare show of patriotism, the President has also signed it in to law. The new law is designed to make public holders more patriotic, accountable and more importantly, make them responsive and responsible to the conditions in our education sector and the plight of our teachers who have patriotically remained here to serve the nation and the children of the poor and marginalised who are the only students in our public schools and tertiary institutions. Reports reaching me have it that already, a number of ministers have been forced to tender their letters of resignation while some in their desperate attempts to save their jobs have hurriedly withdrawn their children from universities abroad and are on their knees begging some Vice Chancellors in Nigeria to offer their children quick admission. After a long, long wait, it is now good times for the poor in Nigeria. Sorry pals, all these happened in my dreams last night. Let's keep praying it happens and pretty soon too. |

Oh Love! Who says you are not fair? Who can argue you are not beautiful? Who doubts your power and influence? Like honey You are very sweet So sweet anyone who tastes you Lick their fingers craving for more Honey I hear is medicinal Ninety-nine ailments they say it cures And so do you heal like magic I know You sooth the heart, dear Love You are a cleanser to the heart Boosting the immune system To keep the pressure of the blood stable Those who get honey they say Must be ready to bear its sting So must lovers be patient with love. The taste of cola nuts lasts But only in the mouths of those who value it Just like love grows and survives Only in the hearts of those that are patient Who value respect and honour it. Dear Love! I have tried hard and for long To find out the scope of your influence But how wrong I was For you know no boundaries You are a fearless conquerors Even kings and queens submit to your authority I have seen them bow whenever you pass by And when you speak They run to do your bidding Without opposition or complaint You are so wonderful and mysterious No one sees your face Yet everyone understands your language When you speak The deaf hear and reply you The blind have no eyes Yet they recognise your presence The child can not speak How comes they answer you? The old are weak and fragile Oh goodness! They run to embrace you without a stumble I keep wondering how cripples serve you They have no legs But once you visit them They stand straight with joy To do your bidding The ferocious lion The big elephant The stubborn goat The barking bull dog The unintelligent donkey The flowing river The huge tree All of them wherever they are Fall under your influence. I fear your anger It is hotter than fire Your hostility frightens me It is more dangerous than danger When you depart Hostility pays an unholy visit To announce the impending arrival Of a series of terrible events That leave the mouth with a sour taste When you die All beautiful things die with you Happiness kicks the bucket first Peace joins its ancestors Stability goes to the world beyond Understanding is escorted to its grave Beautiful as you are You will be buried by the very ugly Hatred. I beg you sweet Love Please don't depart me Live in my heart permanently Embrace my friends for they also need you My country Nigeria is making advances to you I plead with you to accept it Kindly open your big ams To hug and cuddle the whole world from Africa to Asia and Antatica Across America to Middle~East Pass throug Europ to Austria So we can be happy together Under your influence Love, come love Come and have me! Come and have Us! |
