Linqsz: am expecting one of the best albums of the year!you can say that again bro. It's going to be fire!!! |
Olawale Ashimi AKA Brymo is one artist that has distinguished himself in the Nigerian music industry. In the midst so much clamor for "commercial music," Brymo is steadily putting out socially-conscious material. After leaving his former record label (Chocolate City), Brymo released a song titled "DOWN" (Watch the video here) where he once again proved that he is not just an amazing vocalist, but a deep thinker. The feedback from the single was overwhelmingly positive. In anticipation of his third studio album titled "Merchants, Dealers & Slaves", Brymo released a highly intellectual promo visuals for the title track. The release date for the album is Oct. 20th. This is one album that I would be getting as soon as I can. Watch the promo visuals and share your thoughts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DvNL37-BDk Source |
Fela Anikulapo Kuti would be 75 today. The Nigerian master-musician died of AIDS in 1997, but his legacy is on the rise today. Both of his sons, Femi and Seun Kuti, enjoy international fame, and thanks to the afrobeat revival led by bands such as Antibalas (not to mention the Fela! on Broadway show) many people have became aware of the legend for the first time. Of course, for anyone who’s dipped a toe into the ultra-voluminous Kuti catalog knows, the sheer amount of music that Fela recorded during his career is mind boggling. So, to pay tribute to Fela, we’ve decided to point your attention to five lesser-known Fela tunes that may have slipped through your musical net! This a non-chronological selection, jumping between the legendary Africa 70 with Tony Allen behind the drums, and the less dynamic but more orchestral Africa 80 of the later years. Fela is still being highly revered in many quarters even after 16 years. From Paul McCartney, Common, to Merill Garbus, George Clinton and Brian Eno; they have all not stop singing the praise of this maestro and afrobeat innovator. In the spirit of such a day, Infonubia would want to highlight some of Fela's classics (all his songs were definitely classics though). 1.“Ikoyi Mentality vs. Mushin Mentality” is a song that seeks to criticize the varying social classes of the Lagos society; while Ikoyi represented the rich, Mushin represented the poor. On this track you would appreciate such interpolation of the saxophone, trumpets and the Organ. 2. Fela recorded two songs with very similar themes and lyrics, “Confusion” the B side from 1975′s hit “Gentleman,” with the great Tony Allen and Africa 70. With an introduction which one could easily mistaken for a british orchestra performance, later on in the song; it develops into a groovy afrobeat rendition. 3.”C.B.B. (Confusion Break Bones),” the B side of “O.D.O.O.,” is from 1989, with the Egypt 80. Both songs are about the notorious dangers of traffic in Lagos, taking traffic as a microcosmic metaphor for the confusion and disorder in Nigerian society in general. An untypical slow melody of loping 6/8 rhythm is a rarity in Fela’s catalogue. "Panpala, bo lo oya" 4.Original Sufferhead,” released in 1982 with “I.T.T.,” is arguably one of Fela’s masterworks, tying together musical and political themes from across his career. The Egypt 80 has a very live feel here, clearly directed by Fela’s shouted commands and rolling organ. He breaks down the four basic needs of humanity as “Water, Light, Food, House,” and discusses how the Nigerian state fails to deliver these basic needs. 5. “Coffin For Head Of State,” released in 1980 with “Unknown Soldier,” has such a gorgeous bass-line. The song is one of Fela’s very poignant, very angry responses to the attack on the Kalakuta Republic that resulted in the death of his mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. He also criticizes religion on this track as he speaks of how religious leaders live in luxury while members live in poverty. The band here is still the Africa 70, though the toned down, simplistic style of the rhythm section predates the Egypt 80 sound. The umbrella of influence of "Fela Anikulapo-Kuti" transcends genres, borders, continents and generations; through the years, we have seen shades of his vision and aesthetics pop up in American hip-hop ( JayZ, Jcole and Common), political activism, underground music, Afropop, human rights campaigns and plenty other. This man definitely deserves to be celebrated maybe not directly in lifestyle but at least by the level of inspiration his music delivers. All the songs above can be found on YouTube. Source

Someone wrote the quote below on their Facebook wall. I couldn't help but laugh out loud...it's just too funny! For my fellow Africans who do not understand Yoruba, one of the popular languages in Nigeria, I translated the Yoruba words below. I did my best. Please, for all the Yoruba experts out there, feel free to correct me in your comments below. We want to make sure everyone gets to enjoy it. Translation: Igbati = mild slap (on the face) Ifoti = hard slap Lesekese = immediately Igbarun/Igbaju/Iforun = strong backslap Iladi = strong slap on the butt Abara = the hardest slap on the back (usually most painful) Yoruba moms produce the best range of slaps: igbati, ifoti, igbaju, igbarun, ifakun, iforun, ibadi, Abara. These slaps will make you think you were adopted. Igbati will make you correct your wrong lesekese! The beauty of ifoti is you will confess your sins on the spot. Igbarun, igbaju and iforun will make you snitch on all those who committed the crime with you without hesitation. Iladi will make you pee in your new pants! Now Abara is the worst... This will make you do all of the above at once! God bless our parents for the good upbringing!Dislaimer: Yorubas are not violent and are not child-abusers. Most of them are educated and discipline out of love. Have a great weekend! Source |

Are you familiar with Yemi Sax, Nigeria’s “No.1 Sax Boss?” Well you probably should be. For those not yet in the know, Yemi is Nigeria’s answer to Kenny G– but now imagine a dreadlocked Kenny G, playing a bright pink saxophone. Born in the early ‘80s in Lagos, he is the son of one of Nigeria’s first gospel musicians and currently serves as both CEO of his own record label, Sax Records and a UN ambassador for world peace. Yemi is best known for his covers of recent Nigerian pop hits. Have you ever heard a song on the radio or dance-floor and thought, ‘You know what would make this better: if the entire song was re-recorded by a beloved saxophone maestro?’ Enter Yemi Sax, who like King Curtis before him, is the answer to your saxophone prayers. Last year he released the Exclusives (Vol 1) compilation, a collection of sax remakes of afrobeats hits like “Oliver Twist” by D’Banj and “Chop My Money” by P-Square. Improvements on the originals? We’ll leave that to the listeners, but when you’re in the mood for pink saxophone jams, go with Yemi. For those of you that are very conversant with Nigerian classics, you will love this. Yemi Sax plays every "Ebenezer Obey's" verse using his saxophone. The song simply means "The human problem is its lack of understanding of time"......One particular characteristic of old classics like this is definitely the wealth of wisdom they carry. I particularly love this remix because he still allows the elements of the old classic to reign. LISTEN, ENJOY, AND DOWNLOAD |

A Lagos State policeman who allegedly seized a motorcycle belonging to one of the commercial cyclists (okada riders) was attacked by men believed to be some of the cyclists. According reports, the unsuspecting Policeman, whose identity could not be established at press time, was taking the seized motorcycle away when he was intercepted at Berger Yard Bus Stop by the mob. An eyewitness said the mob was made up of Okada men of Northern extraction. Before help could come the officer’s way, the mob descended on him and beat him up, while shouting Ole, Ole (thief, thief), and hit him on the head with a sharp objects. Before people realized he was actually a police officer and had seized the bike, the mob had retrieved the motorcycle and made away with it. prymesolution: This man is has just been in the news for the right reasons lately. Big things popping!Big thangs popping for real. |
Is there an expiration date on dreams? Past due time, delinquent Or can we cling to them For as long as it would seem possible? Or wiser to bury them Plant new seeds beside them And just hope that something grows out of the muddy ash of uncertainties of what might have been. A tormented thing A mind negotiating contingencies Alternate realities She will drive you stone cold crazy A million and one possibilities of what could have been To think is hazardous far better with no options than a taunting sky you might never reach on and silence with a sweep of diverse accomplishments I’m unaccomplished, men I boast no trophies no feathers to wave at the gallery of great giants as proof of my relevance in a vast universe Where too often it feels meaningless but still I dream, in color, in motion To the tune of a music not yet written That perhaps fate might take notice I have the patience of a hundred virtues and one. One door to swing wide open And "hello purpose" "Nice to finally make your acquaintance". But until then Make that a hundred and two virtues. ~ Aima http://www.infonubia.com/2013/10/poem-expired.html |

Nigerian entrepreneur and Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, is set to construct a state-of-the-art 1000-bed capacity hospital in Kano, a commercial hub in northern Nigeria. The project which will be implemented via his Dangote Foundation, will cost an estimated N2 billion ($12.38 million), and will be mounted within the premises of the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital. The hospital, which has been named Mariya Sanusi Dantata, will come with a variety of features including 10 operating theatres, 3 intensive care units, patients’ wards and administrative/service rooms for doctors and nurses, read an official statement. Alhaji Dangote, a renowned philanthropist, noted that the aim of providing such amenities was not to foster a competitive status of “best in class”, but was in fulfillment of its social responsibility to the Nigerian public. “It is not just about building a best in class medical facility in Kano state; it is about fulfilling our commitment to sustainably improving the health and well-being of Nigerians. “We believe that every Nigerian has a right to quality healthcare, we also believe that it is our collective duty to rally our resources to improve health infrastructure, support the development of health care professionals and improve preventive health measures in Nigeria.” The billionaire industrialist’s track record portrays a passion for philanthropic gestures towards the Nigerian public. According to reports, the Nigerian billionaire’s donations – in direct cash form – to citizens faced with environmental crisis such as the recent flooding experienced in parts of the country last year, has exceeded N524.7 million ($3.2 million). He is also a major contributor to educational growth courses, providing scholarships to students in all levels of the educational strata, while also offering grants to universities to facilitate research ventures. http://www.infonubia.com/2013/10/dangote-to-build-1000-bed-hospital-in.html |
