Politics › Farouk Lawan Sacked Aschairman, Committee Onsubsidy by Tolexander(op): 9:22am On Mar 22, 2013
ABUJA—Speaker, House of
Representatives Aminu
Tambuwal yesterday sacked
the suspended Chairman of
the House Adhoc Committee
on Fuel Subsidy Regime,
Farouk Lawan, from the
position of Chairman, House
Committee on Education.
Tambuwal announced the
appointment of Aminu
Suleiman (PDP, Kano) as the
substantive chairman of the
committee as replacement
for Lawan, who is currently
facing trial for allegedly
receiving a bribe of $620,000
from oil magnate, Femi
Otedola.
Tambuwal also appointed
deputy chairmen for six
other committees.
Until his appointment,
Sulaiman was the deputy
chairman of the committee
on labour and productivity.
Rose Okoh (PDP, Cross River),
deputy chairman of the
Education committee had
been operating in acting
capacity.
Tambuwal said the
appointment is with
immediate effect.
Farouk Lawan was
suspended at a special
plenary of the House in June
2012, after billionaire oil
marketer, Chief Femi Otedola
alleged that the former
chairman collected $620,000
bribe from him to facilitate
the removal of his
companies: Zenon Oil and
Synopsis International from
the list of erring companies
in the subsidy regime.
The House had temporarily
stripped Lawan of his
position as chairman
committee on education as
well as chairman of the
subsidy probe committee
pending the outcome of the
investigation of its
committee on ethics and
privileges.
With this development,
Lawan who has been in the
House since 1999 would
remain as a floor member.
The ethics and privileges
committee had concluded its
assignment since last year
but has not submitted its
findings to the House.
Efforts by our correspondent
to ascertain whether the
speaker’s action was based
on the findings of the ethics
and privileges committee
were however not
successful.
Lawan, is presently being
prosecuted for allegedly
soliciting and accepting
bribe for the purpose of
compromising facts on the
oil subsidy management in
the country.
It was learnt that
Tambuwal’s sacking of
Lawan may not be
unconnected with the
resolve of the House
leadership to purge itself of
anything that might dent the
image of the House.

Entertainment › Crazy Way, You Learnt Driving As A Young Chap. by Tolexander(op): 9:59pm On Mar 21, 2013
Was just walking through the street this morning when i saw a young boy of about 14years driving a car which was obvious he drove out with his parents unawared.
Then i remembered how i learnt driving when i was in JSS2.

During the mid 2nd term holiday, on friday after getting home on thursday from school as a boarder. Dad told me to wash the car he would drive to work in the morning. I did as he said, i.e washed the car and thought about how i could drive the car. I devised a plan, disconnected the wires connected to the battery after warming it.

It was almost 8 o'clock, dad was already set with all his documents and ready to go to his office. He ignited the car and wasn't responding, tried again for up to 10 times but still refused to respond.
After the car refused kickstarting, he concluded in his mind that maybe i had tampered with what i wasn't supposed to touch and decided to go to his office by commercial bus since he was getting late leaving the key with me to give the mechanic when he comes, after informing him.

Immediately i discovered dad had left, i connected the battery and called on the brother next door to come and teach me the practical of the theory he had been teaching me. He came, sat by my side and taught me how to move forward and backward. Later we moved out of the compound to the next street and back to the compound before the mechanic came.

That is the genesis of my driving and after then, i started driving the car out during my dad's absence until he caught me one day, but then i was already perfect and he couldn't just help than to get me a proper training and driver's licence.

I believe many people have their own story which they won't mind sharing.

Politics › Power Fluctuations Stallreps'sitting by Tolexander(op): 6:17pm On Mar 21, 2013
Power fluctuations in the
chambers of the of House of
Representatives stalled its
proceedings on Wednesday.
The development made the
Speaker, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal,
to wind down the sitting of the
House, deferring proceedings
till Thursday (today).
Lawmakers were considering
the report on a bill for an Act to
Repeal the National Health
Insurance Scheme Act, No.35 of
1999 when they witnessed
intermittent power cuts.
The bill was in the Committee
of the Whole for clause-by-
cluase consideration after the
Committee on Health headed by
Mr. Ndudi Elumelu had worked
on it.
The power fluctuations shut
down the audio and video
systems in the chamber,
making the recording of the
proceedings impossible.
But, before the power cuts
began, the House had passed a
resolution asking the National
Emergency Management
Agency to assist the victims of
Friday’s rainstorm in Edo State.
The member representing
Owan Federal Constituency of
the state, Mr. Pally Iriase,
reported to the House that the
rainstorm destroyed 132
houses.
He added that power supply to
the constituency was also
disconnected as the storm
uprooted many electricity
poles.

Politics › N6 Billion – All In God’sname by Tolexander(op): 10:43am On Mar 21, 2013
OTUOKE, village of President
Goodluck Jonathan is in the
news for the second time, in
less than a year. The issue
remains the same: a church.
National outrage rained on
an Italian construction firm,
Gitto Construzioni Generali
Nigeria Limited, that in June
2012 built a church in
Otuoke. The President then
confirmed that he had asked
the company owner
Domenico Gitto, for a
befitting church in Otuoke.
Public anger centred on the
fact that Gitto was a
contractor to the Federal
Government. It was thought
its owner was seeking ways
to win more contracts or be
paid the billions of Naira he
was owed. Gitto passed on
last year.
The anger this time is no less
so. More than N6 billion was
raised for another church in
Otuoke, again at the instance
of the President and similarly
by contractors and other
favour seekers.
They claim gratitude to God
and possibly divine
prompting that all that
Otuoke requires is a church.
Nothing can be further from
the truth. The President’s
village suffers the retarding
poverty that weighs down
Nigeria.
Otuoke was one of the
places last year’s floods
submerged, not sparing the
President’s mansion. The
devastation left marks that
neither the President nor his
friends has done anything to
ameliorate. Could this explain
why the launching had to be
held in Lagos?
The village hosts a federal
university; one of the more
poorly funded nine
universities government
sprouted in 2011. One road
that the flood ravaged last
year, serves it. There would
have been no befitting place
to accommodate the
President’s friends.
Is another church the need
of Otuoke? What is the
motive of the donors? What
is the thinking of those
behind this launching,
righteously done in God’s
name? Could a development
project, an endowment to
the new university or
financing for the ignored
East-West Road not
benefitted Otuoke better
than another church?
Did anyone think about the
future of the flood victims
who live in dread of another
rainy season? Is a church all
there is to the needs in
Otuoke? Would God be
against a church built in a
flood free Otuoke?
The donors have been
defending their giving as if
we all do not know that a
church in Otuoke is their
concern because they are
rallying behind the President.
We are not questioning their
right to give their money as
they wish but do the donors
pay appropriate taxes?
Donations of this magnitude,
even for a church, will offend
God in the midst of the
raging poverty and on a
terrain that flood sweeps
away because governments
are busy paying lip service to
serving the people.

Politics › Bomb-blast: Igbo In Kano On 3-day Mourning by Tolexander(op): 10:27am On Mar 21, 2013
KANO — The Igbo community in Kano, Wednesday, commenced a three day mourning over last Monday’s bomb attack at Sabon Gari bus Park which claimed more than 70 lives who were mostly people from the Southern part of the country.

Chairman of Ohaneze in Kano, Mr. Tobias Idika who announced the three day mourning said during the period, all Igbos are expected to remain at home while they will also fast and offer special prayers to avert future occurrence of the ugly incident.

The three day mourning which commenced yesterday was complied with as schools, shops were closed in the Sabon Gari area of the city. Commercial activities were completely paralysed as all the Igbos did not open their shops while security was also beefed up.

According to Idika, “what happened was a calamity and we must fast and pray to God that such a thing will not happen again.”

Mr. Idika also explained that the Igbo community was opposed to the plans by the state government to conduct a mass burial for the victims of the blast. The state government had argued that some of the victims were burnt completely beyond recognition as their relations could not identify them.

Meanwhile, Ndigbo have been advised against avenging the terrorist attack. Making the plea yesterday, the Igbo Youth Movement (IYM) in a statement by its President, Evang Elliot Uko said any form of retaliation would aid the terrorists in achieving their goal of setting Nigeria on fire.

His words: “It has become necessary for the Igbo Youth Movement to sound a note of warning to individuals and groups who are planning demonstrations and rallies of any kind against the Kano bus station bomb blasts, to sheathe their swords immediately.

“These planned protest march could get out of hand. Properties could be damaged and lives lost. We do not reply to the Kano bloodshed with more bloodshed. Painful and regrettable as the bombings were, we call on Ndigbo all over Nigeria to show restraint and maturity at this time.

“Doing otherwise will amount to eventually achieving the aim of the anarchists who bombed those buses. Their agenda is to deliberately provoke Ndigbo to revenge and kick-off mayhem that would lead to an uncontrollable conflagration. Do we play into their hands? Who benefits if Nigeria is set on fire. We plead with all aggrieved Ndigbo to remain calm and cautious.”

Uko urged the federal and state governments as well as Luxury bus unions nationwide to network and deploy bomb detectors to all bus stations across the country to safeguard lives of passengers and commuters.

“We assure Nigerians and the international community that Ndigbo will not go to war neither will our people descend upon innocent northerners in our midst. It is not in our nature. Boko Harm will be defeated. We will overcome,” the statement added.

Also, the Aka Ikenga, the Igbo intellectual think-thank described the incident as a senseless and barbaric massacre of innocent people and called on well-meaning people to condemn the attack.

Aka-Ikenga President, Chief Goody Uwazuruike said: “We call on all men and women of goodwill to rise up and condemn this horrendous crime. It should be noted that the only tonic evil needs to grow is for leaders of any type to sit on the fence. History or posterity will never forgive any one who chose to remain silent in the face of evil. Those in authority should rise up in defence of our right to life and freedom of movement and religion. Only a man who has never tasted war hungers for it. Do not forget that insecurity is an evil wind that blows no one any good. Go to Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria and see what has become of them.”

According to people on this thread, Igala means Antelope in Yoruba. How about the author looking for the meaning of Ahmadu or Ali in Yoruba instead of denigrating his tribe by telling us what it means in Yoruba. Whether he was referring to Ali's tribe as Antelope or Ali himself, it's racist to even involve his tribe in this show of shame. It's even more shameful and satanic that some people see nothing wrong with it.[/size]

A seven-year-old girl (name withheld), has accused her 49-year-old father of rape.

The girl said her father, Sylvester Ehijele, had on numerous occasions had sex with her, adding that he used to promise to buy her goodies and toys before the actions.

She said he usually had sex with her on a daily basis whenever her mother was not home.

She said, “Whenever my mum is not at home, he grabs me, forces his hand over my mouth and then inserts his penis into my private part. He promises to buy me a car, cake and biscuit but he doesn’t buy anything for me.

“He also threatens to use a knife to gouge my eyes out anytime I threaten to report to my mother.”

Sylvester’s wife, Margaret, told PUNCH Metro that he (Ehijele) also raped their 23-year-old daughter when she was much younger and recently, he raped their one-year-old granddaughter that lives with them.

She said, “I am a caterer. In 2006 I went to Abuja for a catering job where I spent five days. But at about 1am, my first daughter, who was about 17-years-old at the time, called me on the phone crying that her father raped her that night.

“When I returned, I confronted him but he beat me up and he continued to molest our daughter and each time I confronted him, it earned me a beating. I had no choice but to leave him when I got fed up with seeing him molesting our daughter and later sleeping with me. I took my six children and we relocated.”

She said in 2011, Sylvester’s family settled their differences and urged the couple to reconcile for the sake of the children.

She said her husband swore never to touch any of his daughters again and she reluctantly returned to her husband’s house.

Margaret said she was however disappointed to find out that less than a year after moving in with her husband, he went back to his old ways.

She said, “We reconciled in May 2011 and I really thought he had changed but in August last year, I caught him in a compromising situation with our seven-year-old daughter. I called her out and she told me how her father had constantly been abusing her.

“Again, I confronted him and he beat me up. I had to pick my daughter and ran to his brother’s house, where I stayed for three days before I went back home.”

Mrs. Ehijele said she continued to cope with her husband’s ways until he finally raped their 15-month-old granddaughter.

She said, “Because my oldest daughter works, we decided to put her daughter baby at a day care in Ejigbo. I have always been the only one that brings her back at 6pm everyday from the day care. But on that particular day, my husband went to the day care and after an altercation with the teacher, he took the baby home.

“He took the baby home and hours later the baby was crying profusely. When I got home, the baby was still crying and I wondered what was wrong. When I finally took off her diapers so I could bathe her, I noticed she was bleeding in her private part. When I raised the alarm, my husband was unnerved. That was when I suspected him.

“I rushed down to the Ejigbo Police Station and reported the matter.”

Margaret said she had been married to the suspect for over 23 years and lamented that he had had carnal knowledge of all their daughters.

“I have two daughters, four sons and a granddaughter. Sadly, my husband has raped all of the females,” she said.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said the suspect would soon be charged to court on charges of defilement.

“The suspect is in the habit of sleeping with his daughters and now his granddaughter. We have the doctor’s report which shows that the girls have been defiled,” she said.

A copy of medical report issued by the Isolo General Hospital reads in part that, “The vaginal hymens of the girls are no longer intact.”

Sylvester however denied the allegation, adding that it was his wife that poisoned his daughters’ minds against him.

He said his wife left him initially because he had refused to pay her dowry.

He said, “If I was the one that raped them, let me die. My wife and I were separated for four years and it was because her family said I hadn’t paid her bride price. After we reconciled, she told my daughters to tell lies against me in order to disgrace me.

“Even my oldest daughter confessed to my family that I never raped her and that it was my wife that told her to lie.”

When quizzed about the medical report, Sylvester said it was not authentic.

Politics › Saudi-born Nigerian Charged With Terrorism In The U.S by Tolexander(op): 7:56pm On Mar 20, 2013
NEW YORK (AFP) – An alleged veteran of al-Qaeda’s fight against US soldiers in Afghanistan who went on to plot a bomb attack on US diplomatic facilities in Nigeria was charged Wednesday in New York.

Ibrahim Suleiman Adnan Adam Harun, also known as “Spin Ghul,” was charged by a grand jury with conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to bomb American diplomatic facilities, as well as providing material support to al-Qaeda.

Harun was born in Saudi Arabia but claims Nigerian citizenship, according to court documents.

The charges allege that Harun traveled to Afghanistan in 2001 and after receiving “military-type training at al-Qaeda training camps,” went to war against US-led forces that invaded the country in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

“Harun allegedly attempted to kill United States military personnel in Afghanistan between 2002 and 2003,” the Brooklyn federal prosecutor’s office said.

In 2003, Harun allegedly underwent training to attack US diplomatic facilities in Nigeria, where he also conspired to bomb the sites.

After an alleged co-conspirator was arrested in 2005, Harun left Nigeria, spending several years in custody in Libya, then after his 2011 release attempting to enter Italy aboard a ship filled with refugees.

It was then that he fell into the hands of Western authorities following an altercation with Italian authorities on the refugee ship, the prosecutor’s office said.

“As alleged, Harun not only intended to, but did commit acts of terrorism against Americans. Now he is subject to the American justice system,” FBI Assistant Director George Venizelos said in a statement.
