A PAN-YORUBA organisation, Afenifere Renewal Group, ARG, has alleged that there is a calculated attempt to relegate the Yoruba to the background in the polity. In a state in Lagos by its National Chairman, Mr Olawale Oshun, entitled: “A cry from the wilderness: The nation has to listen”, the group faulted moves to marginalise Yorubaland from mainstream politics. Oshun argued that there are reports of ethnic cleansing aimed at Yoruba saying “the Yoruba demand to know why discrimination against us is on the increase.” He said “we note with verifiable evidence at our disposal, that most routine appointments and recruitments into the public service under this administration completely short-change our people. For instance, out of the 792 cadet officers recently recruited for training at the Custom Training College, CTC, in Kano, only 45 cadets were recruited from the six South Western States of Nigeria, compared with 263 cadets recruited from the North West Nigeria. In the same recruitment exercise, the North Central Zone got 168 cadets, North East 157, South South 91 and South Eastern Nigeria was allocated 68 cadet officers. The evidence before us therefore shows that 5.8 percent of the recruited cadets are from the South West while the North West took the lion share of 33.1% of the lot. We ask: What exactly is happening here?”. He also lampooned the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration for failing to nip corruption in the bud adding “Nigeria is currently buffeted by corruption in a scale witnessed only under the dark and evil military dictatorships of Generals Ibrahim Babangida and Sani Abacha. jonathan-women Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has become the official headquarters of grandmasters of corruption. In an environment where a model of articulate leadership and responsible governance should be expected, given the enormous powers and resources available, what we have instead, is an organised and well-commanded conspiracy of the political and economic elite, against the Nigerian people, to keep them in perpetual poverty and misery, through high- level corruption, profligacy and financial impunity.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/01/afenifere-group-alleges-marginalisation-of-yoruba/ |

seems Mr Nkechi Okoro needs the #800 very badly. Better he is allowed to go and meet the girl where she is and collect the money. |
A 28-year-old man, who claimed to be a naval rating, Mr. Ikechi Okoro, is now on the run after allegedly killing Chidera Timothy with a bottle over an N800 debt his brother owes the girl’s mother. Twelve-year-old Chidera was a primary five pupil of the Holy Trinity Anglican Primary School in Calabar, Cross River State. Ikechi’s younger brother, Friday Okoro, has been arrested by policemen from Atakpa Police Station in Calabar where the matter was reported. Following the arrest, the members of the Okoro family residing at 34, Wilkie Street, have taken to their heels. Narrating the incident to PUNCH Metro on Saturday, the girl’s father, Timothy, said Ikechi’s brother, Mr. Orieke Okoro, who repairs tricycle, had refused to pay his wife, Mercy, the sum of N800 that he owed her for several months. Timothy said Orieke was a regular customer at his wife’s restaurant and beverage shop and at times bought things on credit. After Orieke’s debt rose to N800, it was learnt that he stopped patronising the restauranteur. Timothy said, “The debt rose to N800 and has remained so for two months. Whenever my wife asks him about the debt, he would claim he does not have money. When my wife discovered that he no longer patronised her but rather bought things from a nearby shop and still paid cash, she threatened to seize his tools. “On Monday, December 17, 2012, my wife went to him to collect her money but the boy said he did not have money, my wife then picked his tools and the boy did not react.” Trouble, however, started, when Ikechi took over the matter when his brother’s customer, who brought his tricycle for repairs, claimed that one of his spare parts was missing. Timothy explained further, “Ikechi came with the customer to my wife’s shop to look for the spare part in the toolbox, but because my wife didn’t know them, she refused to release the box. She insisted that they ought to have come with Orieke and her N800 before she would release the toolbox. “Then the fake naval man started insulting my wife and threatened to beat her up if she did not release the toolbox. He said the worst that could happen was for the police to arrest him. As he struggled to enter the shop to collect the toolbox, my wife blocked him and in the process, he slapped her and she held his shirt. “As the trouble was going on, my son, Chukwuemeka, who had returned from where he went to fetch water tried to ask why the man slapped his mother then Ikechi allegedly ran to their house and collected a machete and returned with his younger brother and the elder sister. “Three of them beat up my son and my wife. Friday used the machete on my son and gave him a cut on the left hand while the sister hit my wife with a wood she was holding.” He said that as the trouble was going on, Chidera rushed to call him (Timothy) from where he was working close by. He added that when he got to his wife’s shop, he saw Ikechi with an empty bottle threatening to kill someone with it. Timothy said, “As I was trying to find out what happened and to calm him down, he struggled and freed himself from the people holding him and said that he was going to kill somebody. He said as a naval man he could do whatever he wished. “He threw the bottle at my son but he dodged it. However, the bottle hit my daughter on the head. She fainted immediately. I rushed her to Mambo Clinic which was the nearest clinic for treatment. She was there till December 23 when she died.” He said although he reported the matter at the police station, no arrest was made until he went back to the police station after his daughter had died. Friday, who allegedly injured Chukwuemeka with a machete, according to him, was arrested. Chidera’s corpse, he said, was deposited at a mortuary on Edgerley Street in Calabar South. When contacted, the state police Public Relations Officer, Mr. John Umoh, confirmed the incident, saying the matter would be properly investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department. Also, the Information Officer of the Eastern Naval Command, Lt.Commodore Williams Olabisi, said the alleged assailant who claimed to be a naval man might have been an imposter. “If any of our officials commit offence of that magnitude, there is no way I will not be aware of it,” Olabisi added. http://www.punchng.com/news/man-kills-12-year-old-girl-over-n800-debt/ |
that is the consequence of bad leadership and followership anyway. But our doctors are still trying anyway cos considering the archaic medical instruments they use in training, lack of smooth academic calendar due to the ASUU-fg disagreement, lack of good academia amenities, they still tried in making somethings do from their 'la cram la pour' |

ABBA-WINNER TAKES IT ALL "The Winner Takes It All" I don't wanna talk About things we've gone through Though it's hurting me Now it's history I've played all my cards And that's what you've done too Nothing more to say No more ace to play The winner takes it all The loser's standing small Beside the victory That's her destiny I was in your arms Thinking I belonged there I figured it made sense Building me a fence Building me a home Thinking I'd be strong there But I was a fool Playing by the rules The gods may throw the dice Their minds as cold as ice And someone way down here Loses someone dear The winner takes it all The loser has to fall It's simple and it's plain Why should I complain? But tell me does she kiss Like I used to kiss you? Does it feel the same When she calls your name? Somewhere deep inside You must know I miss you But what can I say? Rules must be obeyed The judges will decide The likes of me abide Spectators of the show Always staying low The game is on again A lover or a friend A big thing or a small The winner takes it all I don't wanna talk If it makes you feel sad And I understand You've come to shake my hand I apologize If it makes you feel bad Seeing me so tense No self-confidence But you see The winner takes it all The winner takes it all... |

A DARK cloud seems to be hanging over Nigeria–trained doctors desiring to practise in the United Kingdom. Figures released under the Freedom of Information Request by a British tabloid, the Daily Mail, reveal that three-quarters of the doctors struck off the General Medical Council (GMC) register in the past years are foreign- trained and that those trained in Nigeria rank second on the list of those removed from the professional register of the GMC . According to the figures published in the Mail article of yesterday, India-trained doctors top the list of foreign-trained doctors to be struck off the GMC register in the past five years and Nigeria-trained doctors have the record of being second. Egypt-trained doctors occupy the third spot. The paper revealed further that “194 of the 285 doctors struck off for misconduct or incompetence in the past five years were foreign-trained, while 29 of the 39 removed from the medical register in the past year received their medical degree overseas.” Continuing, the paper disclosed that “with only one-third of the 250,000 doctors on the medical register trained outside the United Kingdom, this means that those from overseas were more than five times likely than British doctors to be banned.” Quoting the data it obtained under the Freedom of Information Request - the equivalent of Nigeria’s Freedom of Information Act - the Mail revealed that “India has the largest number of doctors struck off in Britain since 2008, followed by Nigeria and Egypt.” This is in sharp contrast to Hong Kong, which has the best record, “with none of more than 700 doctors working here – in the UK – struck off or disciplined in the past five years. New Zealand’s 600 medics also have a clean record.” Based on the revelations, the paper quoted Julia Manning, the chief executive of the 2020 Health think-tank, as saying “these figures are really worrying and shocking” and that “we need to take a hard look at the assessment of all doctors coming into the country.” http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=109219:nigeria-trained-doctors-rank-second-on-uk-blacklist&catid=1:national&Itemid=559 |

WARRI—DUTCH police prosecutors, L. N. Stempher and G. R. C. Veurink, have indicated their intention to withdraw one of the charges against Nigerian activist and founder of Holland-based Hope for Niger Delta Campaign, HNDC, Comrade Sunny Ofehe, who is facing terrorism charges in The Netherlands, for lack of sufficient evidence. In a letter dated December 10, 2012, and addressed to the investigative judge, Mr. Havik, and Ofehe’s solicitors, Mr. Manders and Pennings, written in Dutch, the prosecutor said, “in continuation of the investigation of the case against Mr. Ofehe, we have had to make a new translation of the wire tap conversations. “This new translation, in combination with the testimony of a witness’ declaration, has now made us to withdraw the fifth charge “causing explosion,” out of the indictment.” According to the prosecutor: “We cannot call the witness, Mr. Umueri, who lives in Nigeria to come to testify. Through the intervention of the Ministry of Security and Justice, we have been informed that the safety of this witness will be put in danger should he come and testify in a terrorism case. “We, therefore, do not have sufficient evidence to press for the number 5 charge. We advise you to proceed with the court hearing where we will ask for the charge to be dropped.” http://vanguardngr.com/2012/12/dutch-police-to-drop-charge-against-nigerian-activist-ofehe-2/ |

Seventeen years after their execution, details have emerged on how former Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, now deceased, got members of his defunct Provisional Ruling Council (PRC) to approve the death sentence passed on environmental rights activist and author, Mr. Ken Saro- Wiwa, and eight others. Saro-Wiwa and others, who were accused of killing four Ogoni chiefs opposed to the campaign by the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), which was headed by the late author, were convicted after a controversial trial that attracted global condemnations. MOSOP was at the vanguard of the agitation against the environmental degradation of Ogoniland arising from oil exploration. But a memo from the meeting of the PRC, obtained by an online news medium, Premium Times, showed how council members approved Abacha’s request for the death sentence to be carried out on the Ogoni Nine so that the military junta would not be portrayed as weak. Members of the PRC at the time were Abacha; Maj. General Patrick Aziza (Minister of Communications under Abacha); Major Gen. Tajudeen Olarenwaju (General Officer Commanding); General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Chief of Defence Staff); Lt. General Oladipo Diya (Chief of General Staff); Maj. Gen. Victor Malu (GOC); Ibrahim Coomasie (Inspector General of Police); Mike Akhigbe (Chief of Naval Staff); Maj. General Ishaya Bamaiyi (Chief of Army Staff); Nsikak Eduok (Chief of Air Staff); Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Useni (Minister of the Federal Capital Territory); and Michael Agbamuche (Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice). During the debate on a memorandum submitted to the council by Abacha, many of the contributors had lamented how the government had been regarded as weak for heeding the pleas by the international community to pardon some coup plotters. They had therefore stressed the need for the government to demonstrate its capacity to deal with knotty security issue that the Ogoni case had thrown up by upholding the death penalty passed on Saro-wiwa and others to serve as a deterrent to others. According to the memo, two days before the execution, Abacha had told the PRC members that the activists deserved no sympathy, and that hanging them would stem further discontent and prove to the world the regime was bold and courageous. “He was of the view that no sympathy should be shown to the convicts so that the sentence will be a lesson to everybody. He stated that the Ogoni issue had lingered for a very long time and should be addressed once and for all,” Abacha was quoted in the document as saying. The late head of state accused Saro-Wiwa of being a foreign agent used to destabilise Nigeria, and a “separatist” who had hidden under the cloak of being an environmental activist to pursue his devious agenda. The execution of the Ogoni Nine, however, sparked international outrage with the European Union and the United States placing an economic embargo and other restrictions on the country. Shell Petroleum Development Corporation, which was at the centre of the unrest in Ogoniland, was also accused of complicity in the killings and in 2009, it paid $15.5 million as an out-of-court settlement to the families of the deceased persons. But the company had said the payment was not a concession of guilt, but a gesture of peace. Besides its decision to uphold the death sentence, the PRC also proscribed MOSOP and used the resources of the state to weaken support for the organisation and its leaders. The tribunal that convicted Saro- Wiwa turned out to be one of the most controversial in the history of this country. Headed by Justice Ibrahim Auta, the current Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, the panel delivered a speedy, but severely criticised verdict on October 31, 1995, barely nine months after it was convened. Their executions on November 10, 1995 without an opportunity to appeal the judgment, led to the suspension of Nigeria from the Commonwealth of Nations. Others killed were Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel and John Kpuine. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/how-abacha-plotted-execution-of-saro-wiwa-others/134961/ |
