Crime › Freedom At Last For Otokotomurder Suspect by Tolexander(op): 5:52am On Jan 22, 2013
…Incarcerated for 16 years
TIME was when some people
of sudden wealth took over
the landscape of Imo State.
They did whatever they liked,
when, how and where they
chose. Some even felt that
spotting policemen as
orderlies were no longer
fashionable hence they
settled for armed soldiers.
More often than not, they
were seen blocking the
roads completely, while
chatting with their friends.
Anybody that dared to
protest got the severest
beating of his life. The
“bouncers” around them
descended on motorists at
will and even went as far as
denting people’s cars at the
slightest “provocation”.
Nobody dared to call them
names. They were gods of
sorts.
They threw money at people
with ease. Royal fathers fell
over heels and wanted to
outdo each other in their
mad rush to hand out
chieftaincy titles to this class
of people. All these acts
angered the people.
It was no
wonder
that
people’s
anger
boiled
over in
1996,
when they
heard
about the
brutal
beheading of 11-year old
Innocent Okonkwo and his
eventual burial in a shallow
grave located in Otokoto
Hotels, Amakohia, Owerri.
That marked the limit of their
endurance. They could take
no more and the result was a
mass protest in Owerri.
Angry residents of Owerri
moved from point to the
other in search of these
people of very questionable
wealth. Buildings belonging
to such people were torched.
Their personal effects were
either burnt or looted by
people. Cases of missing
persons, dehumanization,
brutalization, molestation
and wanton destruction of
property belonging to
hapless and helpless citizens
abated in the state.
The spontaneous agitation
by the people gingered the
security agencies into action.
A lot of people were arrested
and suffered serious
deprivations as a result. A
new vista of life commenced.
Virtually all the people
working in Otokoto Hotel,
including the Hotel Manager,
Mr. Ebenezer Egwuekwe,
were arrested.
Summary trial
If residents of Owerri were
given the opportunity, all the
suspects would have been
given summary trial by the
mob and lynched. All the
same, the suspects suffered
varying levels of indignity.
Members of their different
families even had worse
stories to tell than those
cooling their heels in prison.
A couple of those described
by the police as “the prime
suspects” were later
arraigned in court. After a
long tortuous criminal trial in
Owerri, they were sentenced
to death.
The convicts, including 62-
year old Ebenezer
Egwuekwe, were moved to
Federal Prisons, Port
Harcourt. However, armed
with his stoic belief in his
innocence, Egwuekwe
appealed his death sentence.
This battle for life lasted
about 16 years! For the
family, it remains a thing of
joy that their bread winner
did not die in prison while
the legal battle lasted. They
are also happy that 16 years
after, the innocence of
Egwuekwe has been upheld
by the Court of Appeal.
His ordeal started when one
of the staff of Otokoto Hotel
was caught with a fresh
human head at Eziama, in the
Ikeduru Local Council Area.
He was asked to report to
police which he did. He was
subsequently arrested and
charged for murder.
Narrating his prison
experience, Egwuekwe said
he was moved from one
prison to another. According
to him, his worst experience
was in Port Harcourt where
he was treated like a
condemned criminal. “If I
had committed anything
worthy of imprisonment, I
would have accepted my fate
but unfortunately, I did
nothing to warrant 16 years
of suffering. While in prison,
all my friends deserted me
and my wife and eight
children passed through very
difficult times,” Egwuekwe
said.
He recalled with grief that his
few landed properties were
sold to pay his legal fees and
take care of his feeding. He
stated that he cannot fully
express the level of hardship
his family passed through as
he was the only bread
winner of the family.
Egwuekwe was, however,
thankful to God that despite
his travails, he has been
released and cleared of all
the charges slammed on him.
He however appealed to
people of goodwill to assist
him get back on his feet and
be integrated into the free
society again. He added:“ I
don’t know where to start
life again. I don’t even know
with what to start with
again. My mates, who started
the race with me, have since
overtaken me.”
Speaking also, his first son,
Mr. Ifeanyi Egwuekwe,
affirmed that the family
passed through very hard
times since their father was
arrested and incarcerated.
“Besides spending a
staggering N2.5 million as
legal fees, the family also
incurred other expenses. In
all, we are very happy that
our dear father has been
reunited with the family”,
Ifeanyi said.

Politics › Nigeria Earns N6trn From Oilin 11 Months – CBN by Tolexander(op): 4:22am On Jan 22, 2013
The Central Bank of
Nigeria, CBN, yesterday, said
that Nigeria received N6.24
trillion ($40 billion) as oil
revenue from January to
November last year.
Meanwhile, the apex bank
retained its tight money
supply policy, as it left the
Monetary Policy Rate, MPR, at
12 per cent.
OIL-INSTALLATION
In a communiqué issued at
the Monetary Policy
Committee, MPC, of the CBN,
yesterday, the apex bank
said: “In the first 11 months
of 2012, oil receipts totalled
US$40.087 billion.”
This, it said, enhanced the
stability of the exchange rate
and built up of the external
reserves.
It said: “Overall, the relative
stability recorded in the
foreign exchange market
could be attributed to the
combined effects of
improved supply of foreign
exchange by oil companies
and enhanced capital inflows
from portfolio investors
during the period under
review.
“The Committee expressed
satisfaction with the
sustained accretion to
external reserves which
stood at US$43.849 billion as
at December 31, 2012,
representing an increase of
US$1.682 billion or about
3.98 per cent from the level
of US$42.167 billion at end-
October 2012.
“Relative to the end-
December 2011 level of US$
32.915 billion, the external
reserves at the end of
December 2012, had risen by
US$10.934 billion or 33.21
per cent. The increase in the
level of foreign reserves was
driven mainly by proceeds
from crude oil and gas
exports and crude oil related
taxes as well as reduced
funding of the WDAS on
account of the huge inflow
of foreign portfolio
investments, which was
about 77.0 per cent of total
inflows through the CBN.
Retains MPR at 12%
The CBN, however, defied
calls for a change in its
monetary policy, by leaving
its Monetary Policy Rate
(MPR) at 12 per cent.
Defending its decision to
retain MPR at 12 per cent, the
CBN said: “Given the stability
achieved in the last 12
months with average year-
on-year headline inflation
rate at 12.24 per cent, in
2012, the MPR of 12 per cent
was considered to be just
about right.
“The Committee considered
the calls for a reduction in
the MPR because of the
benign inflation outlook,
other things being equal.”
However, this may be
undermined by the increased
sub-national government
spending and Federal
Government high
expenditure in 2013, the
higher benchmark oil price
in the 2013 budget and the
US debt ceiling with possible
impact on commodity prices.
“In view of the foregoing,
the Committee decided that it
was prudent to hold and
monitor developments
between now and the next
meeting of the MPC. The
Committee, therefore,
decided by a majority vote of
8:2 to maintain the current
policy stance i.e., to retain the
MPR at 12.0 per cent with a
corridor of +/- 200 basis
points around the midpoint;
retain the Cash Reserve Ratio
(CRR) at 12.0 per cent; and to
retain the Liquidity Ratio at
30.0 per cent. Two members
voted for a reduction of the
MPR by 25 basis points.”
Sells $100m, Naira gains 8k
The CBN sold $100 million
dollars at the Wholesale
Dutch Auction System, WDAS,
session held, yesterday, while
the naira appreciated by
eight kobo in the interbank
foreign exchange market.
Analysis of the WDAS session
showed that the CBN sold $
100 million as against $108
million in the previous
session last week,
representing eight per cent
decline. But the official
exchange rate rose slightly
by one kobo to N155.73
from N155.72 per dollar.
Cumulatively, the CBN has
sold $371.2 million this year.

The problem sometimes in naija is that we have good ideas but it is rarely carried out right. There are so many ailments that dibia's or native doctors know how to cure better. For example when am on my period, i drink 4oz onugbu( ewuro), ugba water, and nchawu boiled with 1teaspoon of salt added and i dont get cramps through my period, and it helps with stomach aches too, and if you boil mburogu with ayakata, fish head and aligator pepper and give to a woman who just gave birth it helps her heal faster. Also if you have high fever and you drink ewuro( first rinse) and oha water ( 1 full cup), your fever will go within an hour. Its better than red bull. (my grandma-native doc makes them). It helped me through out college, and my brother who had what americans called add and my grandma was like, "rubbich, bringi him to nigeria and i will cure him" lol - my mom did as she said and my brother was definitely cured, his now a physicist and i guess it made him too focused. But what am trying to say is that most of our cures we need is in nature and our native doctors are better than most western doctors, and understands our body and nature better, its just ignorant and brainwash that makes us believe that western medicine is better than our native medicine. Yes there are things western medicine can offer that native cant, but its better if they work together. Btw my grandma is a healthy 98 year old woman, still farms and cooks her own meals and take care of herself without anyone's help. So I trust her native medical ways, and she has never been to a modern doctor or to a hospital( she hates western doctors).
i quite agree with you sister. But these traditional drugs need being upgraded considering the pharmakinetics of the drugs base on drug drug interactions. These drugs are very potent but there should be academical research and study on their chemistry so that at the end of the day this drug wont do more harm than the therapeutic action they are meant to perform.

I think by your own categorisation, you fall in the group who just want to talk.
like you belong to the league of comment is a do or die affair even if there is nothing meaninful to say. Must he just talk/say something/anything everytime/anytime? Presidency is not a post where one needs to exhaust a given talking airtime.

In what sounds like a movie tale, A woman in Obuno Umuochefu, Igbo-Ukwu in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra state has snuffed life out of four children of her boyfriend by strangling them. Not done with her bestial mission, the suspect sat back at the scene of the crime until her victims’ parents returned, and attacked their mother.

For Mr and Mrs Nwanneka Ogechukwu Okonkwo, both natives of Ekwulumili in Nnewi South Local Government Area but resident in Igbo-Ukwu, January 15, 2013, came like any other day. But the young couple who are each 28 years old, never knew that it was the day their four children, Chukwuebuka, (13), Chukwumelum (6) Obumneme (3) and 15-month-old Chinenyenwa would breathe their last.

The young couple had no premonition of the tragedy that shocked everybody in the community. Their three sons and a daughter were allegedly killed by a lady simply identified as Blessing, from Abakiliki in Ebonyi State. Narrating the tragic incident, the mother of the dead children who spoke with Sunday Sun at Ekwulumili Health Centre where she was recuperating from the shock, said that she was also attacked by the suspect. Mrs Okonkwo said that the eldest of her children, Chukwuebuka, was the first casualty.

According to her, the suspect allegedly hit him on his forehead with a hard object and dumped the lifeless body inside an underground tank in the compound before strangling his siblings one after the other. “I was to go for a burial ceremony with my husband at Ukpor on that fateful day and the children went to school. We initially left with the youngest one, Chinenyenwa but the vehicle we boarded was jam-packed with passengers and the baby started crying. Consequently, my husband said we should disembark and use our motorcycle but people around said the road was too dusty to ride with a baby on a bike.

I decided to go home and wait for our other children who went to school so that they would take care of the baby and enable my husband and I to make the trip with our motorcycle. “But long after school hours, the children didn’t come home. We went to the school and other pupils told us that our children had gone home. I looked for them along the roads they usually take to the house but I did not see them.

Thereafter, I urged my husband to go on his own and look for them, but he returned soon after, saying he had seen them coming home. Before my husband and I left for the burial, I gave them food and told them to go and stay with an old woman in the neighbourhood because we are the only occupants of that building, and I don’t like them staying alone in the compound. “We had stayed barely one hour at the burial ceremony when my husband said we should go home.

But before we left, my husband’s phone rang and I heard him say, ‘I’m in a burial’. So, as we got close to our home, his phone rang again and he told the caller that we were not back yet. I didn’t ask him who the caller was as we rode straight to the house.

“When we got to the elderly neighbour’s house, we were told that she had gone for prayers and that my children were not seen there. We got to the house and I opened the gate from behind believing that the children were inside the house. As we parked our motorcycle inside the compound, my husband pointed to the underground tank that was open. I became apprehensive because we don’t keep it open. But I said maybe the eldest might have drawn water from the well and had forgotten to close it.

I called Ebuka but there was no response. I ran into the sitting room and saw the three younger ones lying on the floor as if they were asleep. I ran out again believing that those three were sleeping. I continued to call Ebuka and looked into the tank and I didn’t see anything. “Later, I decided to wake up Ebuka’s immediate younger brother to ascertain the whereabouts of his brother. I called him but he didn’t wake up; I tried to rouse him but he was motionless and so were the other two. I cried to my husband that the children were dead and I concluded that since the three were dead, Ebuka might be inside the well.

There were marks of human nails on their necks that showed that they were strangled. One of them had faeces in his anus. “It was when my husband started crying and moved towards our bedroom, that the lady (suspect) emerged from the bedroom and asked him why he was shouting. Then, I advanced towards her and demanded from her, where she kept Ebuka’s body because I had seen the others she killed. I held her and she gripped me. When I freed myself from her grip, I rushed to lock one of the two gates and raised the alarm until neighbours came.

“Later, somebody rushed out and called the youths of the community before the local vigilante and policemen arrived. She was arrested along with my husband.” Sources told Sunday Sun that the timely arrival of the police and the local vigilante saved the suspect from being lynched. It was also gathered that Mr Okonkwo, a furniture maker, had been dating the suspect, a relationship his wife confirmed, and had been battling to stop.

When contacted, the couple’s landlord, Mr Sunday, who lives outside the community, described the alleged killing of the innocent children as unfortunate and declined further comment. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Anambra State, Mr Emeka Chukwuemeka, confirmed the incident and said the matter was being handled by the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka, the state capital.
