President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday said that, but for the security measures to check Boko Haram, this year’s Christmas celebration would have been the bloodiest, going by the Islamist sect’s plans. This is even as a church disclosed that it lost 109 members and 50 branches to the group. Jonathan spoke of plans by Boko Haram to push the nation backwards and stop the government from providing the dividends of democracy. “They would not succeed because 2013 will be a good year for Nigerians and Nigeria,”he said. The President noted that Christianity and Islam are religions of peace and tolerance which forbid killings and blood-letting. The President disclosed this at the Ekklisiyar Yaruwa a Nigeria, EYN, (Church of the Brethren in Nigeria), Utako, Abuja, where he attended Sunday service. While re-assuring that his administration was working round-the-clock to address insecurity, Jonathan said that government will contain insecurity posed by the sect. The President said that government will ensure that the activities of the Boko Haram did not push the nation backward as the strategic security plans put in place were already yielding positive results. According to him, the sect had intended to unleash deadly attacks on Christmas day, but the plans were aborted because of the effective strategic operations of the various security agencies. “The Boko Haram planned to carry out a lot of attacks on Christmas day, but we suppressed their plans during the Christmas, because the extent of their plans was not executed as a result of the strategies by the security agencies. “Although, we still recorded some incidences, but the extent of attacks which they planned, was not allowed to be executed. Boko Haram will not push us backwards. If their plan is to stop government from providing the dividends of democracy, they would not succeed because 2013 will be a good year for Nigerians and Nigeria. With your persistent prayer, we shall defeat them,” he said. Jonathan noted that it was strange how terrorism and suicide bombings which were alien to the culture of any section of the country had crept in. He thanked the EYN nationwide for keeping faith and remaining calm even in the face of provocation. Earlier, Senior Pastor of the church, Rev. Daniel Mbaya, said that about 50 of their churches had been burnt and 109 members killed in the North by Boko Haram. He said that EYN, predominantly in the North- East, was worse hit by the Boko Haram insurgence. The Senior Pastor thanked the President for worshipping with them, saying it was a demonstration that the country was blessed with a caring, loving and concerned leader. Mbaya also noted that Jonathan was the first sitting President to worship in any branch of the church since its inception. In a sermon titled: “Walking with God” and taken from Genesis chapter 5, Verses 22 -24, the clergy dwelled on the benefits of putting God first in all human endeavours. According to him, any mortal being who walks with God by obeying His laws and instructions would have peace, everlasting joy and eternal rest. At the service were the President’s mother, Mrs Ayi Jonathan, his Chief of Staff, Chief Mike Oghiadome, Sen. Philip Aduda (PDP-FCT), Executive Secretary, Christians Pilgrims’ Board, John Kennedy-Opara and some presidential aides. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/boko-haram-we-lost-109-members-50-branches-church/ |
but the pastor should have said it in a rebuking way instead of a compaint so that Jonathan would feel sober and understand what governance is all about. The pastor's complaint still gave hin chance to shift the blame on the nigerian citizen. |

Where is Governor Sullivan Iheanacho Chime? Is he dead? Is he alive? There is clear indication that in Enugu state, a cabal of state officials has taken government hostage by their complicity to stage what might be the most scandalous and most elaborate cover-ups in Nigeria’s public administration. There have been indication that Governor Sullivan Chime is not in good health; the grapevine, usually more reliable in these matter than the more established media is rife with the rumour that Mr. Chime is in harrowing and terminal ill-health. The word thrown-about is “terminally ill” and it has gained momentum in the last month when the governor’s absence became quite stark. The administration in Enugu has repeatedly doused the chatter with its own talk that the governor is in fine and dandy health; he is merely vacationing; taking an extended vacation from a backlog of unspent leave. The only problem with this is that Mr. Chime, a Lawyer before he became a governor, knows well the constitutional limits or requirements incumbent on a governor who is deemed no longer capable of carrying out his sworn responsibility to the people as a result either of physical or mental debility. Gov Sullivan Chime Gov Sullivan Chime A governor who runs mad in office is a danger to that office; as much indeed as a governor who develops full- blown AIDS in office, or who in the course of driving to the office one day gets into a freak accident that renders him permanently, physically incapable of carrying on with the tasks of the rather demanding office of governor. The evidence of Chime’s real health situation is hard to come by; there is no medical records – particularly since state officials travel now to India or Germany or some such places to receive treatment – more so because the sheer weight of executive power makes their actions unaccountable and their Medical history indisclosable. As a result, far too little is available to the media which have either been gated from the facts, or have remained in a convenient fog of impotent but complicit distrust, and who have chosen to swallow fully and with a satisfied belch, the hook, the line, and the sinker thrown by our friend, Mr. Chuks Ugwuoke, Enugu’s commissioner for information, that there is no “vacuum” in Enugu. No one knows the true state of Chime’s health because it has become “a security risk” to know such detail. The governor is a god, his powers are sublime and limitless, and as a result the people on whose mandate he purportedly remains in office must be kept in the dark of convenient ignorance. But what is very clear is that Sullivan Chime has been serially absent from his duties. This is troubling. He has been away from his job since September, over ninety days; well past the statutory period allowed for the governor of a state to be constitutionally away from office. The constitution is not silent on this. In fact, the constitution makes a provision for dealing with a governor whose duties are impaired by a continuous and sustained absence from office as a result of ill-health. But the executive council in Enugu has not deemed it necessary to make full disclosure to the people of Enugu State. The absence of the governor from the public in the last ninety days has also not compelled the Enugu State House of Assembly, to raise the question on behalf of the people and to take appropriate action as the demands of the constitution warrants. This is irresponsible. The Enugu state executive Council has, by law under the current supervision of the acting governor of the state, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi, the responsibility to call for votes to replace the governor of the state in the face of his continued absence from his public duties outside of the specified number of days allowable for such an absence. At this stage, it is imperative for all who are committed to good governance to say without ambiguity that Governor Sullivan Chime seems permanently impaired and therefore incapable of continuing in the office of the governor of Enugu state and that the Deputy Governor of the state has the constitutional right and obligation to assume full duties as governor forthwith. Even if the governor appears publicly on Monday morning hale and hearty, he has demonstrated with his long absence from office, a lack of interest and a lack of judgment. Staying away for so long from his job makes his tenure in that office untenable. There is no public officer who overstays his or her leave without consequence and Governor Chime has broken a cardinal rule of his obligation as Chief Executive of the administration of Enugu State. We, the people, who recruited him to that job and the State Assembly, as the key trustees of the people’s interest must either commence impeachment moves against the governor or nudge him gently into dignified rest if indeed it is true, as the rumors go, that the Governor is in no physical or mental state to continue in office. He should also come out publicly in a press conference to dispel these rumors of his ill-health for both his sake and the sake of the administration, already compelled to make interminable excuses for an inexplicably absent governor. We need full disclosure. We must move away from the tradition of silencing and cover-ups long associated with such offices in Nigeria. The governor’s health is no security matter. It is, or ought to be against the law, for government officials to feed false information to the public about the state of affairs in any administration. Information sent out to the public, if found to be false, even if to protect an administration or the government should be fully prosecuted. It ought to earn such an official a long term in jail who retails false information to the public. So the question again: where is Governor Sullivan Iheanacho Chime? Is he dead or alive? Can he continue as the governor of Enugu? We ask because it is long past time to tell the truth. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/12/governor-not-on-seat/ |

A NIGERIAN immigrant’s dream came true when President Barack Obama signed into law a rare private bill granting him permanent residency in the Unites States. Victor Chukwueke, who lives in Michigan on an expired visa, came to the United States 11 years ago to undergo treatment for massive face tumors. He graduated from a university in the state, and plans to attend an Ohio medical school that requires him to have permanent residency, also known as a green card. In a rare act, the United States Congress passed a private bill this month granting him permanent residency. President Barack Obama signed the bill Friday. Private bills — which only apply to one person and mostly focus on immigration — are rarely approved. His is the only one to pass in Congress in two years. “I was overwhelmed with joy; it was nothing less than a miracle,” the 26-year-old says. “Only in this country can so many miraculous and wonderful things happen to someone like me.” Before coming to the United States at age 15, Chukwueke lived in the southeastern Nigeria town of Ovim. He suffers from neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes massive life- threatening tumors on his face. Treated as an outcast because of his deformed face, he was depressed and humiliated, he says. His family abandoned him at an orphanage after taking him to the nation’s best facilities for treatment. “I went to a large teaching hospital in Nigeria and the doctor touched my face and said there was nothing they could do,” he says. “ I cried and begged him to do something. I was so tired of the humiliation.” http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=109049:obama-signs-bill-to-grant-nigerian-residency&catid=1:national&Itemid=559 |
VIOLENCE continued in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, as gunmen, suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, attacked the military post attached to telecom masts and a primary school in Bolori ward, killing a soldier and injuring another in an exchange of gunfire that lasted for half an hour on Friday. According to an eyewitness, the gunmen ambushed the soldiers guarding the GSM telecom masts and school, before opening fire on them. The shoot-out at the Chezcon area lasted for 30 minutes, forcing residents to flee. The area was later cordoned off by the Joint Task Force (JTF). He said one of the soldiers was killed, while the injured one was carried away in one of the patrol vehicles to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for treatment of gunshot wounds sustained in the clash. The Guardian also leant that the roads and streets leading to the Area, Federal Low-cost Housing Estate, and the Ibrahim Taiwo Police Station, that was attacked and repelled last week, were however, cordoned off to prevent further killings. Although there was no official confirmation of the killing from the spokesman of JTF, Lt. Col Sagir Musa, a relation of the slain soldier said, in a telephone chat, that “the Military authorities had contacted us on the sad news of our brother’s killing in Maiduguri. The JTF said Mohammed (my brother) died in Maiduguri and we are awaiting further details from them.” He said he was not certain on the circumstances surrounding the death, adding that: “they did not actually tell us how he died…they only said he died yesterday (Friday).” When contacted to confirm the Friday attack, JTF spokesman, Lt.Col Musa, in an SMS to The Guardian, simply said: “Not true.” http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=109051:gunmen-kill-soldier-in-jtf-boko-haram-clash-&catid=1:national&Itemid=559 |

why must we be insulting our dear president that brought facebook to nigeria? 'thank you President Goodluck Jonathan for bringing facebook to Nigeria'! |
A group, the Niger Delta Youth Initiative for Positive Change, has appealed to Nigerian youths to desist from insulting the country’s President on Facebook and other social media. The group said some Nigerians had taken delight in using abusive words against President Goodluck Jonathan, adding that such attitude was not common in other countries. National Coordinator of the group, Mr. David Ato, who made this call while speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt on Friday, explained that President Goodluck Jonathan meant well for Nigerians. Ato stated that the President needed the support of Nigerians, including youths, to be able to deliver on his election promises. He said people using abusive words against the President should realise that Jonathan did not create the economic and political problems facing the country. Ato said, “The youth should desist from using abusive words against the President of the country. We should learn how to respect our leaders and we need to support him because we elected him into that office. “Insulting him on Facebook and other social media is not the best. The truth is that Nigeria has been facing a lot of economic and political problems for a long time. President Jonathan did not create these problems.” He, however, urged the President to begin to deliver on his election promises in 2013, adding that Nigerians were waiting anxiously to see the manifestation of his transformation agenda. Ato, who expressed optimism that Nigerians would soon begin to enjoy the dividends of democracy, also charged Jonathan to address the problem of insecurity, especially in the northern part of the country. He decried the continued onslaught against innocent Nigerians by the Boko Haram sect, even as he called on Nigerians not to relent in praying for an end to the bomb attacks in the North. He argued that the situation in the North was adversely affecting the image and economy of the country, adding that no investor would invest in a crisis-ridden environment. Calling on security agents to relate with members of the public on security issues, Ato said such measure could help to improve intelligence gathering. http://www.punchng.com/news/dont-insult-jonathan-on-facebook/ |
Affluent citizens of Enugu State, especially returnees from abroad are now shunning public functions, even as they have beefed up security in their homes. This is due to the killing of Dr. Ogbo Edoga, a United States-based financial economist, by gunmen on Boxing Day in his home town, Aku, Igbo-Etiti LGA of the state. Edoga was killed on December 26 this year by gunmen in the house of his kinsman where he stopped over while returning to his village home in Aku on the fateful day. Since his murder, the prominent member of ‘Nsukka USA’, an elitist organization of professionals of Enugu North extraction, his home town, Aku, and Odenigbo area of Nsukka urban where the deceased was born, have been thrown into mourning as villagers and residents gather in clusters, looking moody and discussing the tragic incident. The late Edoga left the United States mainly to raise fund for the construction of ultra-modern medical diagnostic centre sited at Ede-Oballa in Nsukka Local Government Area, in an effort by the organization to improve health care delivery in Enugu North senatorial district. The killers of Dr. Edoga were said to have shot him in the chest and waist after snatching a briefcase from him, even as he pleaded with his killers to spare his life. The hoodlums reportedly escaped in a car they snatched from a retired officer of the State Security Services (SSS). Information reaching the Sunday Sun said the snatched car has been spotted at 9th Mile Corner in Udi LGA, about 15 kilometres to Enugu. Edoga’s in-law, Hon Ogbo Asogwa, an ex-lawmaker, has expressed shock at the tragic death of Edoga, describing it as most gruesome and barbaric. Commenting on Edoga’s killing, President of ‘Nsukka USA’, Eddy Agbo, said in a terse text message: “Nsukka has suffered a great tragedy with the senseless and untimely death of our brother, Ogbo Edoga, on December 26, 2012. ‘Nsukka USA’ has agreed to hold an abridged version of the event with candlelight vigil at the Princess Alexandria Auditorium, University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), in honour of Edoga. We are resolved to affirm and advance the great works of our fallen hero, Ogbo. He lost his life serving our people. Please, join ‘Nsukka USA’ to honour him and drive his passion forward. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/enugu-killing-rich-igbo-men-run-for-cover/ |

Sincere 9gerian: So Borno state receives a massive N106billion annually from sales from Niger delta(including Ondo) and Igbo oil? While Anambra and Enugu for instance cannot boast of recieving up to N70billion annually from this same sales from this same oil. This is a perfect example of some of the distortions caused by several yrs of hausa-fulani dominated military rule. Yet these northern states cant give us some peace for national development. SMH!you claimed that the nigerian problems were created by the abokis? But 2years 7months is enough for us to start seeing if their will be rectification to the problems. |
