ABUJA: A total of 94 people have lost their lives to road traffic crashes in 191 road crashes recorded in the last 5 days across the country. Corps Marshall and Chief Executive of Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Mr. Osita Chidoka who disclosed this in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, when he stopped over in the course of the aerial monitoring of traffic situation on Lokoja-Abuja highway blamed the crashes on speed violation by road users. Chidoka who expressed serious concern over the incidents said the attitude of the road users is unacceptable. He said that with this negative fall-out, the Corps has devised speed calming measures as part of strategies to engender safer traffic conduct among motorists especially during the festive season. He added that “It is an attitudinal issue as this year witnessed rehabilitation of major corridors of the highways, people tend to disregard traffic laws bordering on speed limits and accelerate beyond recommended speed thus resulting to the figures we have witnessed the last 5 days. We have devised measures to address this unpleasant development”. Chidoka however appealed to motorists to reduce their speed and obey traffic regulations so as to reduce carnage during the festive periods. He expressed delight over the free flow of traffic on Abuja-Lokoja-Okene highways, attributing the success to the activities of his men and other security agencies and the improvement in road conditions across the country. He urged motorists to be mindful of road regulations, warning that acts of phoning while driving and drunk driving, over- speeding, overloading and seat belt violation would be visited with severe punishment. With this development, the Corps Marshal said the Corps will re-double efforts to cope with expected influx of traffic during the new year to avert further crashes. The State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Mohammed Garba commended the Federal Government for the timely repair of a section of Lokoja-Abuja road which was washed away in the recent flood disaster, saying that the action contributed immensely to the free flow of traffic being experienced on the road now. He also stated that enough men and vehicles had been deployed to strategic points in the state, saying that the current level of patrol would be sustained till mid-January. At the Nnamdi Azikiwe International airport, the Corps Marshal said the FRSC has sustained aerial surveillance to get real-time information on the traffic situation on the nation’s roads during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, adding that the purpose of the surveillance was to identify areas of gridlock and resolve them to ease travelling. According to him, the helicopter flight will take the Corps’ officials over Gwagwalada, Lokoja, Onitsha, 9th Mile and other areas that usually experience serious jams during the Yuletide. The Corps Marshal added that the surveillance would enable the Corps to monitor the flow of traffic in many parts of the country. Chidoka explained that the Corps recently carried out a road audit which was submitted to the Federal Ministry of Works and the Federal Road Management Agency, adding that the agencies had since rehabilitated many bad roads to make driving smoother for motorists. He said, “In my five years as Corps Marshal, I have never seen such a concentrated effort to rehabilitate the roads by FERMA and the Ministry of Works. Still on the aerial patrol, Chidoka was also at the Niger Bridge in Onitsha to monitor traffic which extended into the city and the neighbouring city of Asaba, Delta State where promptly directed for re- allignment of patrol strategies as the Anambra State Sector Commander, Hyginus Omeje, Corps Commander had to relocate to Onitsha on Sunday from Awka. The traffic on Monday, however, was heavier at the Asaba end of the Niger Bridge as thousands of motorists struggled to gain access to the bridge from the Western and Northern parts of the country. Vehicular movement in other parts of Anambra State had increased as many citizens of the state and their families troop out for the Christmas celebrations but the presence of the Corps’ operatives in Onitsha and support from component Commands in Delta State, contributed to normal traffic flow along the Asaba-Onitsha highway. However, as at yesterday, there has not been report of any major road crash since the traffic began to build up a few days ago along the Asaba-Onitsha corridor. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/12/xmas-94-die-in-road-crashes-frsc/ |

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Smart Adeyemi, has raised the alarm that governors will derail fresh attempts by the National Assembly to amend the 1999 Constitution. He said the state chief executives opposed Constitution review and are already demanding more powers in the amendment which would come into operation next July. Sen. Adeyemi, former national president of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), told reporters in Abuja that governors want the National Assembly to hands off certain clauses in the Constitution. He listed them to include creation of more states, removal of immunity clause, financial autonomy for state Assemblies and local governments. His words: “They are opposed to state creation because they believe it will reduce their empires. They are against the removal of immunity clause because they don’t want their atrocities exposed while in office and they are against the autonomy of the state Assemblies because they want to enslave them. If we have governors who are progressives, the Constitution amendment would be successful. “They will not allow the Constitution amendment to be successful. They are going to derail it. The fundamental aspect of the Constitution amendment is the autonomy. If we cannot get the state Assemblies to be autonomous, there will be no development and the standard of living of the people will be static. “The governors are already saying that they don’t want it. How can one individual be determining the freedom of a whole state? It is for the media and the civil society to rise up against the governors and allow people to have their freedom.” On whether the Senate is helpless in addressing the situation, Adeyemi replied, “with the provision of the Constitution handed over to us by the military, we have to obey and respect the content and spirit of the Constitution. “We cannot amend the Constitution without getting two-thirds of the state Assemblies concurring with us and the governors are also saying that they don’t want the autonomy of local governments, he said. “Were the local governments created by governors themselves? The Local Government Reform of 1976 was meant to bring governance closer to the people, and subsequent Constitution amendments recognized local government as the third tier of government. The governors are demanding more powers for the states from the Federal Government, while they are against freedom for another tier of government. “The states were not created to ensure a true federal structure. In creating a state, factors such as norms, cultures, values and linguistics are taken into consideration. That is why states are not equal in the U.S. People agree to live together. “The way some of the governors behave now, if we some of them, based on their comments, become president, you can have an idea of the kind of government they are going to run. How can they be against local government autonomy? Sitting on the resources meant for local government is unconstitutional, he said.” http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/constitution-amendment-govs-oppose-new-states-senator/ |

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday assured Nigerians of better days ahead saying his administration will ensure that 2013 becomes better for the nation than the outgoing 2012. Speaking at the foundation laying ceremony of the Living Faith Foundation Bible school in Kaduna, Jonathan said the people should expect more quality service delivery from his administration in 2013. "Let me assure all of you and indeed all Nigerians that 2013 will be better for us than 2012 in all aspects of the nation's history. The New Year shall be better for us in terms of job creation, wealth creation and improved security among others," he said. The president urged Nigerians not to despair as government is set to implement reforms that will improve living standards of all. Jonathan called for patience as the reforms may be slow due to tedious processes involved. He said he was aware that people find it difficult to continue to believe in the government saying "Sometimes, challenges make people doubt the sincerity of government, but I am confident that God knows everything." The President said like the biblical Job who lost everything he had "God wants Nigerians to learn some lessons from the challenges they are facing. God means well for this country." Jonathan said the security challenges in some parts of north will soon be history saying "having sanitised the electoral process, we are also intervening massively in road construction, upgrading of airports and railway development." http://m.allafrica.com/stories/201212240498.html/?secid=10063 |

my most embarassing moment with my gurl. I proposed a date to my darling gurl which i met 3days before the date proposal, she agree to go out with me. we went swimming and later went to a 'new buka' in oau campus. We sat down in rotunda ordering for drink, then i asked her if she minds SHAWARMA, the response she gave me is 'SHE DOESN'T LIKE TAKING ALCOHOL. That evening, i could helped laughing inside of me cos i neva knew sharwama is an alcohol to her. |
There were three things involved 1maybe she wasn't a virgin as she claimed to be ceasing that incidence as a bail out 2 maybe during the process of the 'tikabodi' i.e virginity test, the hymen was ruptured leadin to the blood stain on the pant and 3 blood from her menstres |
Fourteen-year-old Esther (not real name), one of the victims of the virginity test that was allegedly conducted on pupils of Ajuwon Senior High School, Ajuwon, Ogun State, by their principal, fears she might have lost her virginity. She spoke with our correspondent, TEMITAYO FAMUTIMI, on Sunday. Excerpts: Why did you choose to do the virginity test when some pupils ran away? I did not choose to do the test. After I and other female Senior Secondary School one pupils lined up in front of her (Olufunke Aladeojobi’s) office, I fled the scene but she noticed it and sent people after us threatening to deal with us. Why didn’t you explain to her that you were not interested in the test? I explained to her that my parents would be mad at me if they got to know that I did such a test without their consent but she brought out a cane and threatened to beat me mercilessly. What happened afterwards? Our principal marched me into her office and the school’s nurse asked me to put off my pants and laid me on the bed. She wore a glove, spread my thigh and dipped a finger into my private part. The school nurse then told the principal who was beside her that I was a virgin. What did your principal do after the nurse said you are a virgin? The principal said I “should not open my thigh” to any boy or man. She subsequently gave me two Ogun State customised exercise books. Did you lose blood? Yes, I lost blood. I didn’t notice it initially. It was the next person who saw me while dressing up that told me that my pants were stained with blood. But, I can’t say if it was the blood from my menstrual period because my menstrual period just ended or the blood was as a result of the virginity test. Did your principal know you lost blood? She didn’t because I left the place almost immediately and she was busy attending to other pupils. How did your parents get to know about the incident? I washed my blood-stained pants when I got home. I didn’t initially want to tell my mum but she noticed that I was keeping to myself. When she now queried to know what was wrong with me, I explained everything to her. Did your principal warn you against telling your parents? No, she didn’t. But I wouldn’t know what she might do to me if she got to know that I told my parents about it because she is strict and we all fear her. That was why I felt reluctant to tell my parents. How have you been feeling since you underwent the test? I have been doing fine just that I’m not happy about the incident because my classmates have been looking down on me. They keep saying that we have been “disvirgined.” I feel ashamed of myself. Are you a virgin? Yes. I have not had sex before but with what everybody is saying I don’t know if I am still a virgin. I really wish I’m still one. http://www.punchng.com/news/virginity-test-my-pants-had-blood-stains-pupil-2/ |
A new radical Islamist sect, Ansaru, on Sunday claimed responsibility for the recent kidnapping of a French national in Katsina. The group cited France’s push for military intervention in Mali as a justification, accordint to AFP. A statement by the group said, “Ansaru announces to the world, especially the French government, that it was responsible for the abduction of engineer Francis Colump, 63, working for the French company Vergnet.” Wednesday last week, about 30 gunmen stormed Vergnet’s residence in Katsina State, where the alternative energy firm has a wind power project. “The reason for his kidnap is the stance of the French government and the French people on Islam,” said the statement written in Hausa. The group specifically pointed to “France’s major role in the (planned) attack on the Islamic state in northern Mali.” It also cited France’s “law outlawing the use of Islamic veil by Muslim women.” Paris has backed plans to deploy a west African force in northern Mali to flush out the Al-Qaeda- linked Islamist groups who took control of the vast desert territory earlier this year. “We inform the French government that this group will continue launching attacks on the French government and French citizens … as long as it does not change its stance on these two issues,” the Ansaru statement said. The police chief in Katsina, Abdullahi Magaji, told AFP that there were indications that former or current employees of Vergnet had been involved, arguing that the attack appeared to be “an inside job. Ansaru is less well known than Islamist group Boko Haram, which is waging a deadly insurgency in the North since 2009. The two groups are known to have ties but are seen as independent. In November, Britain’s interior ministry identified Ansaru as a “Nigeria-based terrorist organisation” and declared membership or support for it illegal. The group’s full name, Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi Biladis Sudan, is roughly translated as Vanguards for the aid of Muslims in black Africa. http://www.punchng.com/news/we-kidnapped-frenchman-in-katsina-new-sect/ |

Does it feel the same When she calls your name? Somewhere deep inside You must know I miss you But what can I say Rules must be obeyed The judges will decide The likes of me abide Spectators of the show Always staying low The game is on again A lover or a friend A big thing or a small The winner takes it all I don't wanna talk If it makes you feel sad And I understand You come to shake my hand I apologize If it makes you feel bad Seeing me so tense No self-confidence But you see The winner takes it all The winner takes it all... |
Thanks. olorun implies a single being, so that must refer to the Almighty Allah/God. What is the Yoruba word for 'god', the one with small 'g'. No?
yoruba call them olorun kekere or orisa. |
