CultureTruths We Never Question by Tolux17(op): 12:27am On Jul 31, 2025
I saw something strange recently. A man walked into a small shop, acting like he was just there to make a purchase. Nothing unusual at first, until he suddenly froze and started digging through his bag, his expression turning from calm to panic.
The shop owner, clearly confused, asked him what the problem was. He looked up and said, “I’m looking for something,” then began hissing, like a snake. Not playfully. Not as a joke. With the seriousness of someone trying to summon something.
The shopkeeper, now visibly unsettled, asked again what was going on. The man took a breath and said, “I came in with my pet cobra. I can’t find it.”
Then, as if that explained everything, he started pacing the shop, hissing louder, calling out to the missing snake, like it was a lost dog that might just come slithering back if it heard his voice.
The shopkeeper didn’t wait around. She screamed and ran out. Within minutes, a small crowd had formed outside, people whispering, pointing, some even crossing the street to avoid the shop altogether.

The man kept looking around, growing more frantic. He walked out of the store and began checking under the chairs just outside. An elderly man, curious about the commotion, approached him and asked what was going on.
Without hesitation, the man repeated the same story — that he had come in with his pet cobra and now it was missing.
The old man’s face shifted from curiosity to alarm.
"Why would you do something like that?" he snapped. "You need to find your snake and leave here immediately!.

Just then, a young boy stepped forward and said, “I think I saw the snake go that way,” pointing toward a narrow alley beside the shop.
Another person chimed in, “Yeah, I saw something slide past that path too — I thought it was my eyes playing tricks.”
In a matter of seconds, imagination became memory. People who hadn't seen anything started nodding in agreement. A small group gathered near the alley, peering cautiously, as if the cobra might suddenly appear.

At this point, more elderly people had gathered, their faces twisted with concern, frustration, and disbelief. Some were scolding the shopkeeper for not being more careful. Others were already dialing numbers, ready to call animal control.
The tension in the air was thick. Fear had turned into anger.
And then, finally, the man raised his hands and said,
“Okay, okay… everyone relax. There’s no cobra. It was a prank.”
A stunned silence followed. Then came a wave of laughter, sighs, even some applause. People were relieved. The tension melted. They were safe — there had never been a snake.

The prank had worked, not because it was funny, but because it revealed something uncomfortable:

"People don’t need facts to believe something, just the suggestion of a story and a little fear."

When I watched that prank unfold, it hit me: so many of the “truths” we hold onto, the stories we believe, and even the decisions we make… are often built on shaky ground.
Our actions may be real, but the beliefs driving them? Not always.
This led me to ask myself: What else am I acting on that isn’t real?
Maybe something a teacher planted.
Maybe something my parents feared.
Maybe something a friend assumed.
Maybe something the media never stopped repeating.
And I think you should ask yourself the same question:
What if you’ve been living your life around a fear that doesn’t even have teeth?
It reminds me of a story Les Brown once told.
He said he used to avoid a certain route every day because there was always a dog barking at him. One day, he finally decided to face it, only to discover that the dog didn’t even have teeth.
Funny, right? But isn’t that how many of us live?
Running from toothless dogs.
Avoiding paths we were meant to take.
Acting on beliefs that were never even true to begin with.

So now I’ll leave you with this:
What dog are you running from that might not even be real?
What belief have you let shape your choices, your relationships, or your self-worth, without ever stopping to question it?
Maybe it’s time to turn around and face it.
You might just find that the thing you’ve feared all along has no bite.
And when you do, you’ll realize something even more powerful:
You were never really stuck. You were just misinformed.
