Factors responsible.

1) Areas of settlement: from writeup Akalaka and his young family travelled from Benin and settled in areas already inhabited by locals..The locals were more in number and as such were able to dominate in language.(to interact with them, you need to learn language).

2)Intermarriage: again from writeup, Akalaka had to marry his second wife from within the community he settled to gain love and trust of the local population..Akalaka and sons were supplied wives by Igbos.


3) Slave trading: It was common practice then to buy slaves for ecoomic and domestic purposes and Igboland were relentless selling its people as slaves (Igbos can sell anything for money).A man with maybe 2wives and 14 children can own more than 200 male and female slaves..Akalaka and Sons took hundreds of Igbo slaves.

So then, anyone asking of Igbo influence should understand how it came about..But we know our history.

Im perjectly jaded with Ikwerre this, Igbo that.

But efiks has been interacting with aros for centuries they still don't speak Igbo nor bear Igbo names

The Ibibio has been more than interacting with igbos and they are Igbo friends for millennia yet they don't speak Igbo no bear Igbo names

So as you can see the trading and interaction theory is false

The question you all should be asking is what did those 10candidates do that they passed. If everybody failed then something's wrong if one person passes the rest weren't prepared.

Onitsha has continued to produce the most educated and fore-runners of the Igbo race since the time of the great Zik of Africa- the first president of Nigeria, Ukpabi Asika, Chike Obi, Akpamgbo, Emeagwali etc. Onitsha is the crown of entire Igbos. This is one city that every Igbo has connection with either your relation is resident, uncle, aunt or your parents are resident. It is the most cosmopolitan city east of the Niger. Onitsha people were the first Igbos to meet the Europeans explorers led by Landers brother even before the berthing of Crowther and his team who settled in the city and propagated their missionary service.

I want to categorically say that I am disappointed with the response of many Igbos on this thread.

Firstly, Igbo doesn't start and end in the South East.

Secondly, the area called Onitsha today includes the following places: Ogbaru,Obosi,Nkpor,Nkwelle. How can the Igwe of Onitsha be more important than the Igwes of the aforementioned towns.

Thirdly, every Igbo town is as important. Therefore, we must respect the culture and tradition of others. We mustn't see them as bush people or inferior.

Lastly, Igbos should unite and build a common front. Politics in Nigeria is a game of number. We must unite with our brothers in the so called South south( a geographically impossible location).

Last bullet: no igbo town is superior to the other. Respect!
