LOS ANGELES — Andy Whitfield, who played the title role in the hit cable series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” has died at age 39, according to representatives and family. Whitfield died Sunday in Sydney, Australia, 18 months after he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, manager Sam Maydew told the Associated Press. “On a beautiful sunny Sydney spring morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18 month battle with lymphoma cancer,” Whitfield’s wife Vashti said in a statement. “He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have help carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was.” Andy Whitfield — who was born in Wales and moved to Australia in 1999 — was a virtual unknown when he was cast as the legendary Thracian slave in “Spartacus,” a role made famous by Kirk Douglas in the 1960 Stanley Kubrick film. The series proved a breakout hit for the Starz network and made waves with its graphic violence and sexuality. Whitfield appeared in all 13 episodes of the first season that aired in 2010, and was preparing to shoot the second when he was diagnosed with cancer. While waiting for Whitfield’s treatment and expected recovery, the network produced a six-part prequel, “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena,” that aired earlier this year with only a brief voiceover from the actor. But in January after Whitfield’s condition grew worse, the network announced that another Australian actor, Liam McIntyre, would take over the role. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield,” Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht said in a statement Sunday night. “We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in ‘Spartacus’ and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life.” Whitfield’s previous credits included appearances on the Australian TV shows “Packed to the Rafters” and “McLeod’s Daughters.”

The Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, has denied reports that she steered contracts worth $50m to her brother in 2004. An online news portal had published a Wikileaks report that ‘Okonjo-Iweala ferried $50m jobs to brother.’ Okonjo-Iweala has however, described the story as a “tales by moonlight” account. A Senior Special Assistant to the minister, Paul Nwabuikwu, said the report was baseless fiction totally devoid of any semblance of truth. He said, “The story lacks substance and credibility. First, the minister has no brother called Jon-Jon, as the alleged “brother” is identified in the story. Second, no brother of the minister was awarded any such “consulting” contract as alleged. “It is shocking that something that was discredited so long ago is being rehashed. It is clear that this is another ploy by vested interests that are desperate to stop her from contributing to the realisation of an improved Nigeria. They will fail again.”

Nigeria First Lady Clear: As EFCC Denial Allegation. Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mrs Farida Waziri, on Wednesday, debunked claims that the First Lady, Mrs Patience Jonathan, was under any form of investigation by the anti-graft agency. Waziri made this clarification while receiving representatives of the Women Empowering and Enriching Lives (WEEL), an Abuja-based Non-Governmental Organisation, who paid her a courtesy visit at the EFCC’s corporate headquarters in Abuja. The clarification is coming on the heels of renewed media reports that the anti-graft agency had, on September 11, 2006, seized $13.5 million from Mrs Jonathan, when her husband, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, was then the governor of Bayelsa State. According to Waziri, the visit of the NGO provided her the opportunity to respond to the many enquiries she had been getting on the alleged pending case against Mrs Jonathan. “Let me state clearly that the commission will not allow itself to be used to drag innocent people’s names into crimes, cases or allegations they know nothing about. In this particular case, I have read my predecessor who said in media interviews in September 2010 that Mrs Jonathan was not in any way involved in any case of money laundering investigated by the EFCC under him. I have thereafter checked our records and cannot find any case of money laundering against Mrs Jonathan or the president himself. So, each time I get an enquiry or read about this, I often wonder where this is coming from,”the EFCC boss declared. http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/27915-we-have-no-case-against-patience-jonathan-efcc |

The Federal Road Safety Corps is to commence the issuance of new vehicle number plates this month in its renewed determination to harmonise all existing modes of licensing of vehicles nationwide. The FRSC, which said Nigeria was currently losing over N15bn annually to vendors of fake vehicle licences, also planned to introduce a new driving licence, with new security features, to make it difficult for fraudsters to continue to forge the document. A statement by the corps on Monday said that the new plates would be attached to vehicle owners with an identification tag bearing the number affixed to the windscreen for ease of security checks. It quoted the FRSC Corps Marshal and Chief Executive, Mr. Osita Chidoka, as saying the new vehicle number plates formed part of corps’ strategies towards restoring order and sanity in the nation’s motor vehicle administration scheme. On the features of the number plate, the Corps Marshal said that beside the improved security features, the number plates would come with bolder embossed character and the 50th Nigerian anniversary commemorative logo. Chidoka also said that the FRSC had completed an upgrade of its Lagos production plant, especially in information and communications technology to ensure a hitch-free unveiling of the number plate. Other measures for the smooth production of the new number plates, according to him, are the establishment of two new plants in Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory, and Awka in Anambra State; cleaning up and updating of central database on motor vehicles in Nigeria. To pave the way for the new arrangement, Chidoka said that the corps had initiated a quality management system and total overhaul of the national vehicle identification scheme, which would require vehicle owners to exchange their present number plates for the new ones. The statement was, however, silent on when the FRSC would commence the new driving licence. The corps marshal had earlier said that the new regime would take effect from April this year. He said that the organisation was disturbed by the growing number of syndicates engaged in the illegal production of driving licences and other vehicle documents. The FRSC chief executive added that drivers below 25 years would be required to renew their provisional driving licences until they clocked 25. Similarly, those above 65 years would undergo strict verification every year at states’ vehicle inspection offices before being issued with the licence. He, however, warned that any driver under 25 years would not be allowed to drive at night. “On those under 25, they will be issued with graduate licences and they are renewable annually until they get to the required age. And the current one is for three years, just like the one we now use. The new regime we want to roll out is even more advanced than what they use in some European countries,” he noted. Chidoka said that the new driving licence would cost N6,000; while vehicle owners would pay N15,000 for a new number plate, each of which could be processed online or manually. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art2011080325884 |

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Thursday fixed 180 and 160 as cut-off points for admissions into Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education respectively for the 2011/2012 session. The decision was arrived at after the second combined Policy Meeting of the examination body with stakeholders, in Abuja. Earlier, the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai, said the Federal Government would no longer tolerate “random admissions” and the late submission of list of admitted candidates into the universities. Rufa’i handed down the warning while declaring the policy meeting open. She expressed regret the avoidable hitches which the 2010 admission procedures as a result of this unwholesome practice by some institutions. She appealed to all the institutions to adhere strictly to admission guidelines so as to maintain a healthy academic calendar. She said, “I wish to remind all institutions on the adherence to admissions time-table as prepared by the JAMB. “Last year, this was seriously abused as many institutions were still making submissions to the board up to May 2011. “May I remind all institutions to follow the guidelines with regard to issues like the criteria of merit, quota, educationally less developed states, catchment area and the 60:40 science/arts ratio. “To this end, the decisions you take and the discretion you exercise in the course of this meeting will be critical as these will go a long way in the realization of our nation’s aspirations and the current administration’s goal of delivery on the social contract as well as being among the top twenty economies in the world by the year 20: 2020.” http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201107292221298 |

Former governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has started receiving lectures at the Law School. A statement from the former governor’s media office disclosed that he resumed, Monday last week, at the Abuja campus of the Nigeria Law School, where he joined other fresh students to register. Lectures for graduates of foreign universities started Tuesday last week and it was gathered that Prince Oyinlola has since been a regular face in class. The Law School runs a year professional programme for all Law graduates of Nigerian and foreign universities. Prince Oyinlola became governor in 2003 shortly after he graduated in Law from Buckingham University, United Kingdom, but could not go for the bar training due to state duties. He applied for admission to the school after his ouster from office by the Court of Appeal in November last year. http://tribune.com.ng/sat/index.php/news/4781-oyinlola-goes-back-to-school.html Good 4 him. |
http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201107201294950 An ex-banker, Miss Motunrayo Ogbara, on Monday committed suicide after being jilted by her lover. The corpse of Ogbara, 26, from the famous Ogbara family, Ikorodu, Lagos, was discovered hanging from the ceiling of her sister’s residence on Allen Avenue. According to a source, who craved anonymity, the deceased was a former employee of the Access Bank but resigned recently. “Motunrayo (Ogbara) was an employee of Access Bank but she recently resigned. She told us she had received a job offer at the MTN and we were happy for her,” she said. Another friend of the deceased told one of our correspondents that the deceased became depressed after receiving the sad news. “She had a medical problem but nobody was sure of the exact problem. It seems her fiancé later found out about the health issue and he called off the wedding and dumped her. This left her depressed,” she said. Although the deceased was described as a sociable person, PUNCH METRO’s finding showed that she was neither on Facebook nor Twitter. Another source, a former classmate of the deceased said she did not expect Motunrayo(Ogbara) to indulge in such an act. The source, who craved anonymity, said “She was my classmate at Queen’s College, Yaba. We both graduated in 2001. “Although we were not very close, I knew her very well because she was one of the most popular girls in the school. She had many friends because she was pretty and many girls liked following her around.” Our correspondent learnt that after graduating from Queen’s College in 2001, Ogbara gained admission into the University of Lagos through Diploma two programme to study Economics. PUNCH METRO investigations showed that no autopsy was carried out and she was buried on Tuesday at Vaults and Garden Cemetery, Ikoyi. A close family member of the deceased, who craved anonymity, said Ogbara was jilted and had attempted suicide in December, 2010, before she was stopped. She said, “Ogbara was engaged to a guy and plans were already on for their wedding. But she had a health issue resulting in the removal of her womb. When the guy knew about this, he dumped her and married another girl. She became depressed and attempted to commit suicide in December 2010. “But before she could carry out the act, people came to her rescue and since then she was being closely monitored by family members. As a result, the family employed a driver for her. She was very brilliant and made a Second Class (Upper Division) in Economics at UNILAG. She did not lack anything and had a bright future. “Her father paid for her Master’s programme in the UK. But after four months, she returned home, saying she was not concentrating on her studies. She was always complaining. At a point, she called home to say she was not having money. So, her family sent some money to her and even got her a new car. Yet, she insisted on coming home. “When she returned home, her father got her a job at MTN and she was to resume on Monday but that was the same day she committed suicide.” But another family member, who also did not want his name mentioned, said neither wedding nor health problem was connected to her death. He, however, said she was always complaining of depression. “Since the first attempt, the family monitored her closely. But she was at home alone at her sister’s residence on Allen Avenue after everybody had gone out and used the opportunity to kill herself,” he said. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, said he was unaware of the incident but would revert to our correspondent if such a case was reported. But as at the time the paper went to bed, there was no confirmation from him. RIP but this is too bad.
