Ondo State governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, has said the education policies of his administration are designed to bridge the gap between the rich and poor in the state. The governor, who stated this while inspecting some of the mega schools being constructed for pupils of primary schools in the state, which are in different stages of completion, said education was a veritable tool to fight poverty. Mimiko added that the Mega School in Okitipupa, Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state and the Model Secondary School in the Oke-Ijebu area in Akure had been completed, while those in Ikare, in Akoko North-West Local Government and Ondo West were at different stages of completion. He also said at least 12 of such projects had been awarded and contractors were at various stages of construction. They included the ones in Ile-Oluji, Ore, Oka-Akoko, Owo and Akure, the state capital. Mimiko explained that his administration planned to use the school to enhance social integration aimed at bridging the gap between the rich and the poor in the society. He said: “We are creating a social integration to ensure that the children of the poor can rub shoulders with the children of the rich by choice in the society. Nothing but the best is good for us in Ondo State. We told our people that what we are going to put on the ground will be world-class for the future of our state and the future of Nigeria.” “We believe that for us to re-engineer education and reposition it, we must provide the best infrastructural facilities of global standard. We are happy that we dreamt about this and God has helped us to realise it.” He was optimistic that the quality of the facilities and the conducive learning environment being provided by his administration would encourage the younger generation to embrace education, which he referred to as the only sector that could break the vicious cycle of abject poverty. |

I was on a journey with my pastor when we met a team of policemen on duty in Asaba Benin express way at about 5pm. And after they have searched us and did'nt find anything implicating one of them went to the front of the car and shouted 'stolen vehicle! Just because part of the plate number has fallen out. Sensing trouble and delay even when we knew we have'nt committed any offence. The pastor called the officer incharge and told him 'look am a man of God and don't have time for this nonsense, then the officer said 'then man of God settle us and go your way or do you want we take you to the station for drivimg a car without a unmber? but the pastor insisted that he's a minster and can't do such thing to give bribe. Then the police officer said 'if you are indeed a pastor where is your bible? Because you should have a bible with you, the pastor brought out his bible and the offier orderd him 'open and read mathew 5:25-26 to me. The pastor opens and reads ''settle matters quickly with your advesary who is taking you to court, do it while you are still with him on the way or he may hand you over to the judge and the judge may hand you over to the officer and you will be thrown into prison, i tell you the truth you will not get out untill you have paid the last penny.'' The pastor after reading quietly made an offering of just N300 to the officer. End of service, go in peace and argue no more. Said the police officer. |

Workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) have dragged the Attorney-General of the Federation before the Federal High Court in Abuja over the proposed privatization of the government agency. In a suit filed by 16 plaintiffs through their Legal Counsel, Mr. Bamidele Aturu on January 7, 2011, the workers are seeking the determination of four key issues and five declarative reliefs. The plaintiffs are Mansur Musa, Ishaya Audu, Sam Nwaire, Philip Ali, Shade Omolade Falode, Zaccheaus Olukayode Adu, Sikamta Mshelinga and Issac Abegye. Others include Mbang Ekpo Enang-Ntukubes,H. They also asked the court to grant another injunction restraining the defendant whether by himself, privies, agents, subordinates or otherwise howsoever or by whomsoever from transferring workers and members of the Plaintiff in the Power Holding Company of Nigeria to the successor companies created under section 8 of the same Act without the consent of the workers. The court was also urged to issue a declaration that that generation, transmission, trading, distribution and bulk supply and resale of electricity all of which constitute the power sector of the economy is a major sector of the economy that cannot be validly, legally and lawfully privatized by the Federal Government of Nigeria. |

I found this story and thought it is worth discussing. Did the groom do the right thing? What would you do if you were the groom? This is a story about a wedding that took place recently. It was a huge wedding with over 300 guests. After the wedding at the reception, the groom got up on stage and took the microphone to talk to the crowd. He said he wanted to thank everyone for coming, many from long distances, to support them at their wedding. He especially wanted to thank the brides and grooms families for coming and to thank his new father-in-law for providing such a fabulous reception. To thank everyone for coming and bringing gifts and everything, he said he wanted to give everyone a special gift from just him. Taped to the bottom of everyones chair (even the chairs of the wedding party) was a manila envelope. He said that was his gift to everyone and told everyone to open their envelopes. Inside each manila envelope was an 8x10 picture of his best man having sex with the bride. (He had gotten suspicious of the two of them and hired a private detective to trail them weeks prior to the wedding). After he stood there and watched the peoples reactions for a couple of minutes, he turned to the best man and said F----you! he then turned to the bride and said F----you! and then he turned to the dumbfounded crowd and said. Thanks, Im out of here. He had the marriage annulled first thing that Monday morning. While most of us would have broken off the engagement immediately after finding out about the affair, this guy goes through with it anyway as if nothing was wrong. His revenge; 1) Making the brides parents pay a lot for a 300 guests wedding and reception 2) Letting everyone know exactly what did happen 3) And best of all trashing the brides and best mans reputations in front of all their friends, parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, nieces and nephews, etc. Did this guy go too far?

Senate yesterday estimated that Nigeria’s present external and local debts at N6.02 trillion, but said the country is not in any danger of going broke. Chairman, Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, Senator Ehigie Uzamere, disclosed this during the committee’s inauguration by Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu. Giving a breakdown of the debt profile, Uzamere said the external debt stands at $5.398 billion which translates to 2.76 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) while the local debt is N5.210 trillion, representing 17.53 per cent of the GDP. Regardless, Senator Uzamere said compared with other countries; Nigeria is still on safe ground with its present debt profile. He noted: “The situation does not call for a party but more hard work and a serious approach to translate our debt into asset to accelerate our infrastructural development and boost the economy”. The committee chairman said the total debt of N6.02 trillion “is more than the Federal Government’s annual budget. This amount is unsettling and calls for serious concern.” He asked rhetorically; “do we have the capacity to repay this money considering our yearly revenue profile?” Also speaking at the inauguration of the Women Affairs Committee, Senator Helen Esuene, its Chairman, outlined the panel’s agenda to include protection of women’s rights as well as focus on increasing female participation in key public sector positions, increasing female participation in commanding and managerial positions in the private sector. “It is a known fact that shame and stigmatization have often been the cause of perpetrators of rape and other domestic violence going scot free. The committee will look into how to bridge this gap by strengthening prosecution procedures and creating units for trauma management of such victims. “We will focus on security and welfare of members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), protection of children born and living in prisons and effective implementation of the Child Rights laws. The committee will give serious attention to issues of widowhood, human trafficking and inheritance. “It is pertinent to state that this committee is not out to witch-hunt but to add value to the activities of various establishments,” she said. Inaugurating the Senate Committee on National Identity Card and Population, the Deputy Senate President stressed the importance of data gathering and advised Nigerians to place emphasis on registration of births and deaths. At the inauguration of the Works Committee headed by Senator Ayogu Eze, Senator Ekweremadu cautioned that if the present set of ministers of works fail to fix the deplorable road networks in the country “then, we have failed and we may not get it right anymore.” He urged the committee to liaise with the various organs of government to begin rehabilitation of roads, adding that Nigerians have waited for too long for dividends of democracy. Responding, Senator Ayogu assured that if after four years the committee, in conjunction with the ministry, fails to fix the roads, “our hopes of industrialisation would be a mirage, adding, “we cannot attract foreign investment when our roads are in deplorable conditions.” http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2011/oct/28/national-28-10-2011-002.html |
Unless he’s given a clean bill and freed by the courts, Mohammed Sabo, a farmer based in Bauchi State, might soon be cooling his heels in prison. He’s accused of being responsible for the gruesome murder of his wife of 16 years, Halima. Mohammed was recently paraded by the police in Bauchi State. The farmer, who looked dejected while being paraded by the police, admitted killing the woman who bore him five children. He said, however, that he committed the crime in error. Weeping profusely and looking totally confused, the farmer confessed that he hacked Halima down with his hoe on his way to the farm. The suspect, a resident of Rigar Isamiya in Darazo Local Government Area of the state, was arrested by detectives from the Bauchi State police command for allegedly killing his wife. The farmer was said to have hit Halima with his hoe two times which immediately resulted in her death. Speaking to newsmen at the police headquarters in Bauchi, Mr. Sabo admitted committing the crime, saying, however, that it was not intentional. Sabo, who was among 16 other suspects paraded by the command, said: “Yes, I killed my wife. But I did not kill her intentionally.“When I left home for the farm that morning, I noticed that someone was following me, that there was someone coming behind me. When I looked back, I saw a woman but I did not know she was my wife. So I hit her with the hoe that I was taking to the farm. “It was very foggy then, and so I could not recognise her. That was why I hit her with the hoe that I was carrying. I hit her twice with the hoe before she collapsed and died. “I hit her with the hoe because it was the only weapon at my disposal at that time. But it was a mistake because I did not know she was my wife. I did not expect to meet anybody on my way to the farm at that time of the morning. I had to hit her because I was scared.” When asked if he had a quarrel or had fought with his wife before the incident, Sabo said: “No, there was no quarrel or fight between us.” On how he felt after killing his wife, Sabo replied: “I felt bad because she was the only wife I had, but God has destined that it would happen that way. I believe that is her destiny to die.” According to the Police Public Relations Officer in Bauchi State, Mohammed Barau, Mohammed Sabo was arrested based on information received from the public. Barau, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), said: “We got information on the incident and our men swung into action. On getting to the place, the woman was rushed to the hospital immediately, but unfortunately she died in the hospital. We went for the husband and arrested him. The case is under investigation now.” http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2011/nov/04/national-04-11-2011-007.html |

LAGOS State governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has condemned the constitution of Nigeria, describing it as fraud. Speaking at the presidential wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, on Tuesday, on arrival from Abuja, Fashola said the only way the impact of the local government areas in the country could be felt by the people was for the constitution to be amended in their favour. The governor described a situation whereby the Federal Government took the lion’s share of the revenue allocation as unrealistic, adding that both the states and the local governments were left to share a paltry 48 per cent, which, he said, was inadequate to take care of the challenges at the state level. He said if the government at the federal level was working assiduously with all the resources at its disposal, the agony Nigerians were allegedly experiencing would have been minimal, while challenging journalists to carry out independent analysis on the pulse of the people on the activities of the Federal Government over the years. He insisted that it would be difficult for the local governments to carry out their statutory functions of free health and free education at the primary school level, adding that they had been left with payment of salaries alone. “Now, which is the government that is closest and most impactful to the people? But sadly, it is the government that has the least revenue,” he said. Fashola said the appropriation law prescribed about N240 billion for 2011 for subsidies, adding that as of September, the country had exceeded the approved amount by an additional N1.2 trillion. http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/30249-nigerias-constitution-a-fraud-fashola |

ACE comedian, Babatunde Omidina, a.k.a Baba Suwe, on Monday, asked a Federal High Court in Lagos, presided over by Justice Okechukwu Okeke, to vacate an order he gave last Friday, which empowered the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to detain him for additional 15 days. The request formed part of a motion on notice he brought, pursuant to Order 26 Rule 11 of the Federal High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules, 2009. The artiste, while asking for an order of the court discharging or vacating the order issued by Justice Okeke, argued that the application for the order obtained by the NDLEA was grossly irregular and constituted an abuse of the processes of the court. In the motion filed by his counsel, Bamidele Aturu, Baba Suwe also argued that the application for the order obtained by the respondent was contrary to public policy and constituted a wanton violation of his fundamental rights. The motion is expected to be heard tomorrow. The NDLEA, it will be recalled, had arrested the comedian on October 12, while trying to board an Air France plane to Paris, after the scanning machine at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport had allegedly indicated that he had ingested substances suspected to be hard drugs. Meanwhile, the NDLEA, on Monday, denied the rumour that Baba Suwe excreted wraps of cocaine or any other hard drugs. Its spokesman, Mitchell Ofoyeju, in a telephone interview with the Nigerian Tribune, described as untrue, the rumour doing the rounds on Monday that the actor had started excreting drugs. The rumour that Baba Suwe had excreted 16 pellets of cocaine led the Nigerian Tribune to call the NDLEA officials for confirmation, which they denied. According to Ofoyeju, “the story is untrue, there is nothing new, he is still under observation.” http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/30169-detention-baba-suwe-challenges-court-order-as-ndlea-dispels-excretion-rumour Note: I apologize for caring fake rumor. is one of my friend in facebook that lead me to that.
