Travel / A Nairalander Shares Overnight Beach Camping Experience At Enukunmi Eleko Beach by tourismlove: 12:59pm On Jan 06, 2019
I teamed up with my good friend Koyejo Sofoluwe(@KINGFISHEREcHo) and a group of tourists for an overnight beach camping experience at Enukunmi Eleko Beach.

A brief history; Eleko Beach opened in 1989 as a serene and private beach in the Lekki Peninsula, about 30 miles east of Lagos Island. Away from the hustles and bustles of the metropolis, it usually has an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.

Enough of history, now to our camping experience; the team set out for Enukunmi Eleko Beach from Alagomeji at 1:50pm. The journey was an exciting one; everyone got to introduce themselves and talk about what they do. The journey was smooth and gridlock free.

Our first stop before getting to Enukunmi Eleko beach was the Lekki Conservation Centre; which was overcrowded. We decided to move on to Lufasi Park for a brief visit. We got to Enukunmi Eleko Beach less than 3hours after our initial set out, remember our two stops along the way.
On locating our camp site, it was now time to set up tents, but first we had to clear up the surrounding areas. Please note that we had visited this camp site a couple of days earlier and had reached an agreement with the host community, this is very important.

After putting up our tents, it was time to set up our bonfire; which was prepared by the locals. We then proceeded to swimming in the beach (for those who could swim), eating and drinking. We also played a lot of games, danced, sang, caught crabs and finally slept around 3:00am.
We woke up around 7:30am; we all took a 45mins group walk by the seaside, after which we returned to our campsite, had our sumptuous breakfast, had a group talk, played more games and finally decamped around 2pm.

It was a fun experience. This is just a brief summary of the full experience.

Learning Points
-Beaches in Nigeria should be a tourism haven where tourists, families, adventurers can come and relax free from intimidation, oppression or violence.
- We were able to patronize some shops in the local community, which served as a source of revenue to them.
-It was an opportunity to meet new friends, business partners and fellow adventurers.
-Nigeria needs to harness her water resources more.

Travel / Today Is World Tourism Day - Let's Celebrate Tourism In Nigeria by tourismlove: 10:33am On Sep 27, 2018
World Tourism Day, which falls on Sept. 27 annually and is celebrating its 38th year in 2015, was conceived by the United Nations to celebrate one of the world’s most important industries.

World Tourism Day was established at the third session of the U.N. World Trade Organization General Assembly in 1979, it was seen as a milestone within the international community and demonstrated the important social, cultural, political and economic effects of travel worldwide.

“Every time we travel, for whatever reason, we are part of a global movement; a movement that has the power to drive inclusive development, create jobs and build the sustainable societies we want for our future; a movement that builds mutual understanding and can help us safeguard our shared natural and cultural heritage,” noted the U.N. World Tourism Organization Network, underlining the founding values of the day.

Sept. 27 was chosen as the day because it comes at the end of tourism's high season in the Northern Hemisphere and the beginning of the holiday season in the Southern Hemisphere.

So to celebrate World Tourism Day, here are pictures of the beautiful tourist attractions of My country Nigeria.

I would be showing images that show some beautiful tourist attractions in our country; some I have personally explored and others I plan to explore very soon.

1) Badagry with my friends, this trip cost us 9,000 each and it was an all inclusive package.

2) Olumo rock, Abeokuta, this trip cost us 10,000 each; we also visited the Alake’s Palace, Funaab zoo Park, Adire Market and a tour round the city.

3) Erin Ijesha , Waterfalls, this cost us 12,000 each; we also visited the Ooni’s Palace and the National Museum Ile-Ife.

4) National Museum Lagos with the kids, took over 50kids there and spent less than 50,000.

5) Ogbunike Cave

6) Obudu Mountain Resort

7) Gurara Falls

8 ) Kano Walls

Feel free to upload more lovely pictures of your beautiful Nigeria and your tours too.

Travel / Why Are Nigerians So Disinterested In Exploring Nigeria? by tourismlove: 11:46am On Sep 20, 2018
Hello Everyone,

A friend of mine once asked me, why are Nigerians so disinterested in exploring Nigeria?

The answer wasn’t far-fetched; it’s Our Nigerian Orientation. He was surprised at my response but I was going somewhere. You might have expected a reply like low disposable income, bad roads, safety issues but all these are minor. We have all been sold the Western Dream while also receiving information that Nigeria is not safe, that what tourist attractions do we have in Nigeria, etc. All these are not true.

Let me start by saying that Nigeria is a very very beautiful country and there is so much to see but the mental value we put on her is very poor. Irrespective of all those reasons given above, exploring our fatherland should be the dream of each and every Nigerian. Travelling around Nigeria is not a luxury. It’s affordable for the low income earners to the high income earners. It’s an avenue to learn something new. If we Nigerians cannot explore and appreciate what we have, how do we expect foreigners to appreciate our lands?

We would rather explore other countries where we pay expensive flights, face visa issues and border issues. While our own country o where we would barely spend one tenth of our budget is a no no for us, we would rather visit other countries for vacation or honeymoon, you would even hear some people say it’s either Dubai or no where even if they can’t afford it. Yet we would be saying Nigeria is not developing, when the money we are to spend here; we have been spending abroad.

On the safety issues; using safety as a reason would mean we all wouldn’t go anywhere. No place has a guarantee of safety. Remember, people live in all those places. It is our responsibility to debunk all these myths out there because of how the media tends to portray Nigeria. We need to stop de-marketing destination Nigeria.

September 27th (one week from today) is WORLD TOURISM DAY, let’s go out and explore Nigeria.

Travel / Nigerians, Lets Go On A Vacation by tourismlove: 1:16pm On Aug 31, 2018
Hello everyone,

It’s the last day of the month of August. The summer period is almost over and this is the best time to take a vacation.

What is a Vacation? According to Wikipedia, a vacation or holiday is a leave of absence from a regular occupation usually for the purpose of recreation, relaxation, family bonding or tourism. Even leaving what you usually do for 2-3days for recreation and going somewhere different to take your mind completely off work is a vacation.

It is popular believed that most Nigerians don't go on vacations or that vacations are only for the wealthy. I am here to tell you that you don’t have to leave the shores of Nigeria to enjoy a vacation. We have several lovely vacations sights within the country.

I know you have a lot of office workload, stress and bills to pay, but look at it this way; if anything should happen to you while on this job; that company would still go on without you. This brings me to my next point; WORK-LIFE-BALANCE. Work –Life balance is used to describe the balance that an individual needs between time allocated for work and other aspects of life. Areas of life other than work can be, but not limited to personal interests, family and social or leisure activities.

7 Importance of Vacations

Vacations help to relieve stress which in turn promotes better physical and mental health.

Relaxing and getting away from your worries (both personal and professional) can help lower anxiety.

Vacations Help Maintain Focus, people who vacation regularly feel energized and more ready to tackle the tasks at hand.

Vacations Help Prevent Illness, A recent survey found that people who take regular vacations report being and feeling healthier.

Vacations Improve Your Sex Life. Surveys indicate people who vacation regularly reported feeling sexier, with greater romance in their relationships which equates to better sex!

Vacations Strengthen Relationships. Vacationing with your family or loved ones help forge closer bonds.

Vacations Make You More Productive At Work. Workers report feeling more creative after taking time off, and more than 70% of them reported feeling more satisfied with their jobs when they took regular vacations.

Go on that vacation with the kids before they resume to school. This would strengthen your relationship. Kids don’t remember the toys you bought for them, they remember the experience.

Go on a couple’s getaway, rekindle the flame of affection, and let tourism meet romance.

The best thing you can buy with your money isn’t material; its experiences. It stays with you forever. Your clothes will tear, your car will be outdated but you will always have your experiences with you.

OP, how is the beach? How much do you have to pay to enter the beach, and are there touts there?

The beach is actually very nice; it gives you this refreshing and relaxing feeling. We paid 100naira per person to enter the beach although you had to pay about 200naira for the boat ride to cross the large lake first. Didn't see any touts the day we went there.

I was invited by my friend @travelgeniuz to accompany him and a group of tourists to tour the beautiful town of Badagry.

A brief history; Badagry is a coastal town and local government area in Lagos State. It was a major slave port during the slavery era. It is situated between the city of Lagos and the border with Benin at Seme.

Enough of history, now to the tour; the team set out for Badagry from Oshodi at 8:50am. The journey was an exciting one; everyone got to introduce themselves and talk about what they do. The journey was smooth and gridlock free. We got to Badagry less than 2hrs 30minutes.

Our first stop on this historical tour was the Mobee Slave Relics Museum; where we were shown various chains, pictures, few paintings, tools used in piercing the body parts of the slaves, some other things and an in-depth lesson on slave history in badagry.

From here we moved on to The Badagry Heritage Museum. Here was majorly filled with writings, pictures, sculptors and a few other art works, depicting and telling the story of the slave trade era.

We had a short stop at the first storey building In Nigeria and then the first place Christianity was preached in Nigeria.

Next was on to the famous Badagry beach. Before we could get to the beach though, we had to cross a large lake by boat. This was quite exciting as the thought that I could not actually swim crossed my mind; although we all had life jackets on.

After successfully making it to the other side of the lake, the only structure there was a small wooden souvenir shop selling locally made artifacts; most made out of coconuts. We were able to patronize the shop and buy a few things. Then there was a large expanse of land lying fallow. This I believe could be used either as a resort, a recreational centre, a park or even a zoo.

In the middle of these vast hectares of land is a “well” called the well of forgetfulness. It is said that any slave who drinks of the water forgets about the life he is leaving behind.

After this, was the point of no return. Legend has it that on getting to this point, no slave ever goes back or escapes. It is on to their new master’s country from here.

We all struggled and made our way to the beach where everyone sprang back to life on sighting the water and seeing nature in all its splendor and beauty. It was indeed a lovely time at the beach

Main Points
-Badagry should at this point be a tourism haven where tourists, families, adventurers can come and relax.
-The beach and the surrounding areas should be worked upon and upgraded to attain international standards.
-The Government should do more in improving the aesthetic appeal of Badagry.
-The Government should look into improving infrastructural facilities and amenities in Badagry.
-Kudos to the Lagos state government for the road network to Badagry; atleast from Oshodi to Badagry was a smooth ride.

After a lovely time at the beach, we made our way back to our tour bus, had lunch, played some games and headed back to Oshodi, back to the hustling and bustling of Lagos.
