The presidency, on Tuesday, slammed the Northern Elders Forum for what it called “delusional arrogance” over its call for some sections of the country to secede. According to a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the presidency insisted that only democratically elected leaders can take decisions that steer the nation, and no one else. The statement was titled “Statement on the call by ‘Northern Elders Forum’ asking a section of the country to leave the federation.” “We wish to reassure Nigerians that it remains their democratically elected leadership which takes the decisions that steer our nation–and no one else. “No self-appointed and unelected group can take this right from Nigerians – no matter how much coverage they might enjoy in the media. Nigerians listen to elected leaders, not opinionated tin-gods who have no traction with any responsible group. “It is a delusional arrogance that would lead such a group to publicly state terms and conditions for the existence of our nation. “Who gave them the right to ask for the exclusion, or expulsion of any one, group or section of the country from the Federal Republic of Nigeria?” The presidency noted that the Nigerian government does not take guidance or invitations from such groups–only from the Nigerian people who put governments in office. It said while any group can refer to itself as “leaders”, the government will not recognise it as such “if you have not been elected by Nigerians to a leadership role.” The statement further noted that like many other countries around the world, Nigeria is feeling the strain of the current period of volatility and uncertainty. Therefore, “Now is not the time to seek to exacerbate divisions amongst Nigerians. Rather, we call on all Nigerians to come together and work to overcome the challenges we face as one nation, one people.” https://punchng.com/your-secession-comment-arrogant-presidency-replies-northern-elders-forum/ |

The Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Dr Aliyu Tilde, who expressed support for the violent mob of fanatics that killed Deborah Samuel, a female student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto State over alleged blasphemy, defended his position. BY SAHARAREPORTERS, NEW YORKMAY 16, 2022 The Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Dr Aliyu Tilde, who expressed support for the violent mob of fanatics that killed Deborah Samuel, a female student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto State over alleged blasphemy, defended his position. Tilde had said Deborah’s murder was provoked and that Christians and others dismissing blasphemy were in need of psychiatric evaluation. Posting what Deborah reportedly said, the commissioner had written, “Ba wai an yi group din nan don ture-turen abubuwan banza ba ne fa. An yi don past Q, in akwai test, in an ba da assignment, a tura. Ba wai abubuwan banzan ga za ku tuttura mana ba. Manzon Allah din me? (This group is not for the faint of heart. Done for past Q, if there is a test, if an assignment is given, push. It's not what you don't care about us. What is the Messenger of Allah?),” the commissioner then added, “If you’re not provoked by this, visit a psychiatrist, please. We must teach our children to respect others.” However, in a fresh update on his Twitter account, the commissioner said he has no regret over the initial post. “NO REGRET: True believers of Jesus, including me, do not lie. I have watched and read many Christians condemn what Deborah said. “The provocation is as bad as the killing. Both must be condemned. If that hurts anyone, please let him hug the nearest transformer,” he said. SaharaReporters had reported how Deborah was killed and burnt by her colleagues for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Outraged by the incident, Nigerians on Twitter had asked the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure justice was served. Similarly in March 2021, some angry youths backed by leaders in Sade community in the Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State burnt a man identified as Talle Mai Ruwa, to death for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad. SaharaReporters learnt that Mai Ruwa was dragged away from his house in the presence of his mother and burnt to death in the middle of the community. http://saharareporters.com/2022/05/16/%E2%80%98no-regret-if-hurts-you-please-hug-nearest-transformer%E2%80%99-%E2%80%93-bauchi-commissioner-who |

London (AFP) – Manchester City staged a thrilling fightback from two goals down to keep the destiny of the Premier League title in their hands, but Riyad Mahrez’s late penalty miss forced the leaders to settle for a dramatic 2-2 draw at West Ham on Sunday. Pep Guardiola’s side were in danger of gifting second placed Liverpool a title lifeline after West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen struck twice in the first half. But City’s stirring recovery showed the character that has already brought them three titles in the last four seasons. Jack Grealish got one back soon after the interval and Vladimir Coufal’s own goal completed City’s escape act. It should have been even better for City, but Mahrez’s penalty was saved by Lukasz Fabianski with five minutes left. While that was a bitter blow to Guardiola, who stood ashen-faced on the touchline, in the circumstances City will be relieved to have moved four points clear of Liverpool with a goal difference seven better than their rivals. They will retain the title if Jurgen Klopp’s side lose their game in hand at Southampton on Tuesday. If Liverpool beat Southampton to close the gap to one point, Guardiola’s men can still clinch the trophy with a victory against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium on May 22. A title race for the ages could well go down to the last day of the season, when Liverpool host Wolves, as it did when City pipped the Reds to first place in 2019. Guardiola said this week he wants players with a “special mentality” as he looks to bolster his squad for next season, personalities who, like him, wake up every day obsessed with winning. |

SENATOR Shehu Sani, yesterday, said the All Progressives Congress, APC-led Federal Government has failed in the fight against insecurity despite spending N4.2 trillion on defence and security in seven years. Sani in Asaba as a guest speaker at a two-day seminar/workshop on “Good Governance and Democratic Sustainability Vis-a-Vis Electoral Process,” organised by the Asaba Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Delta State Council, noted that insecurity has remained unabated under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari. He said: “We spent $1 billion to purchase Tucano jets and this has not stopped kidnapping, banditry and terrorism in the country. “The terrorists are only armed with motorcycles and AK-47 rifles, yet we keep pumping billions of dollars into security and defence without achieving results. “Kidnappers call relatives for ransom with Nigerian registered numbers yet no trace of anyone arrested.” Sani said the only legacy the government can leave for the people was to secure their lives, adding: “The people are not even asking to be lifted out of poverty but to secure their lives while they manage their poverty.” Declaring the ceremony open, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State called on Nigerians to participate actively in the political process to ensure good governance and democratic sustainability in the country Okowa, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, told Nigerians to get actively involved in politics to ensure that the nation’s democracy was sustained. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/05/insecurity-apc-failed-despite-spending-n4-2trn-on-defence-shehu-sani/ |
