PoliticsKaduna Govt Sacks NUT President, 2,356 Other Teachers by treesun(op): 8:17pm On Jun 19, 2022
The Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board says it has dismissed 2,357 teachers who failed the recently-conducted competency test.

Its spokesperson, Hauwa Mohammed, in a statement on Sunday in Kaduna, said the board conducted a competency test for over 30,000 teachers in December 2021.

She said that 2,192 primary school teachers including the National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Mr Audu Amba, had been dismissed for refusing to sit for the competency test.

Mohammed noted that 165 of the 27,662 teachers that sat for the competency test were also sacked for poor performances.

She said, “Following the state government’s resolution for continued assessment of teachers to ensure better delivery of learning outcomes for pupils, KADSUBEB conducted another competency test for the teachers in December 2021.

“The services of teachers who scored below 40 per cent are no longer required and their appointments have been terminated from the Public Service for their poor performances.

“Teachers who scored 75 per cent and above were recognised as those who passed the test and qualified for attending courses in leadership and school management.”

According to her, qualified teachers will be included in Teacher Professional Development programmes to enhance their capacities to deliver quality teaching to pupils.

Mohammed said teachers who scored between 40 and 74 per cent did not meet up with the minimum pass mark, adding that they would be given a second chance to improve their capacities.

The Kaduna government had in 2018 sacked 21,780 teachers who failed a competency test, and replaced them with 25,000 others recruited through vigorous processes.

In December 2021, the Board also sacked 233 teachers over alleged possession of fake certificates.

TravelOverland Aircraft’s Engine Catches Fire Midair, Pilot Declares Emergency by treesun(op): 9:38am On Jun 16, 2022
A four-member flight crew of Overland Airways made a successful landing of a distressed aircraft on the Runway 18R of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Wednesday evening, after the plane’s engine caught fire mid-air.

The ATR 42 aircraft, which has 37 passengers on board, was en-route Ilorin-Lagos when the plane suddenly developed a major fault.

The pilots had sent out a Mayday to the Lagos control tower.

Mayday is an emergency procedure word used internationally as a distress signal in voice-procedure radio communications. It is an international radio distress signal used by ships and aircraft.

The Pilot-in-Command of the distressed plane was reportedly on approach to Lagos when the incident happened.

The Lagos airport control tower consequently put the airport emergency response team, including the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria’s fire services department, on notice, following the Mayday.

The pilot finally landed the faulty plane safely on the international airport’s runway amid a fully prepared airport emergency response team.

The statement read in part, “Overland Airways wishes to inform the general public that its flight OF1188 from Ilorin to Lagos experienced an unusual high turbine temperature on one of its engines today, Wednesday, June 15, 2022 around 7:50pm.

“This occurred in the approach phase of flight and the aircraft landed very safely as the crew skillfully implemented their standard procedures for such abnormal situations.

“All 33 passengers remained calm through the process and safely disembarked row by row in accordance with post-COVID-19 procedures after the aircraft came to a halt on the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos runway 18 Right. No passenger was hurt in any way.

“Overland Airways salutes the professional interventions of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and the Accident Investigation Bureau Nigeria (AIB-N) which were very prompt and reassuring.

“Overland Airways regrets any inconvenience to its passengers and assures the travelling public of its full commitment to the safety of its services and passengers.”

The spokesperson for Accident Investigation Bureau, Tunji Oketumbi, could not comment on the incident immediately, saying the agency had yet to be briefed.

The spokesperson for the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Mr Sam Adurogboye, could not be reached immediately as his telephone line did not connect when our correspondent put a call through.

PoliticsRe: Lagesc Removes Illegal Structures Beneath Cms Bridge by treesun: 9:09am On Jun 15, 2022
money121:
As part of concerted efforts aimed at ensuring the general cleanliness of Lagos environs in line with global best practices, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has effected the demolition and removal of illegal structures under the CMS bridge.

The Corps Marshal of the Agency, CP Gbemisola Akinpelu, (rtd), made this disclosure at the Command Headquarters, Bolade-Oshodi, noting that the exercise was in response to petitions received about the activities of street traders and miscreants around the CMS axis and under the Eko Bridge.

Akinpelu explained that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had also given a directive that the refrigerators and cold rooms constructed with illegal connections under the bridge be dismantled to avoid a repeat of the Apongbon bridge incident, adding that other illegal structures were also dismantled and carted away by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

She also directed that the cleared area be sustained by operatives of the Agency stationed around the CMS axis, warning that anyone caught returning to the location for illegal trade will be dealt with in accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017.

While calling for voluntary compliance with the State Environmental Laws, Akinpelu charged street traders and hawkers to desist from displaying their wares for trading under bridges, pedestrian bridges, walkways, setbacks, sidewalks, road verges and medians, stressing that such untoward behaviour negatively affects the environment and impedes the free flow of human and vehicular movement across the State.

The Corps Marshal also enjoined pedestrians to be safety-conscious by using pedestrian bridges, just as she advised owners of private and public property to have a valid waste collection contract for proper waste disposal to foster cleanliness in the State.

LegendHero:
I saw someone (@Mario9jaa) on Twitter give snippet of why Bola Tinubu should be elected president and I want Nairalanders to see this too.

This is why we are supporting Tinubu.

1. Power: Tinubu’s government, in 2000, contracted AES to build an IPP that will generate 270MW of electricity to Lagos residents in order to exit the irrational power supply being provided by the FG. The 270MW is now part of our national grid. It is the first of it’s Kind. Tinubu electrification project covered over 100 communities. In his first term, 53 rural communities were targeted. The projects were completed in Egan, Atewolere, Ifesowapo, Aboru, Agbado Ayetoro, Akorede, Isheri Ikosi, Orile Aguntan, Rofo, Borokini, Omologbede, Araromi, Oke Agbo, Erekusu, Logberu, Okegelu and Ebute, Lekki. Others were Origanringan, Onigbolakowe, Oke odo Elemoro, Ipaja Isale odo, Agenuba, Ajelogo, Mutaku, Egansando, Ayanfe, topo and Ikola Agbenaje.

2. Decentralization: In order to bring governance closer to the people of Lagos state, Asiwaju created extra 36 LCDAs which led to the disagreement between Lagos and the OBJ led FG. They are still working till date. Nigeria needs someone who believes in this!
First of it’s kind

3. Economy: With an IGR of just over 600million naira when he took over, different initiatives which included the reorganization of the LIRS led to an unprecedented IGR of over 7billion monthly after 8 years, the sustainability of which has brought same to 57bn in 2022.

4. Health: Decentralization of the Health Management Board led to the creation of LASAMBUS, an ambulance management scheme, Hospital Services Commission and Lagos State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency. In addition, policies such as “Roll Back Malaria”, “Jigi Bola, Free Health Policy for children below 16 year and adults above 65 years are verifiable ones that stood him out then. The First of its Kind.

5. Infrastructure: Roads, Railway Roadmaps, Port Roadmaps, Housing Roadmaps. Hospital Roadmaps.

PoliticsAtiku: Nigerians Will Collapse APC, Same Way The Party Collapsed Nigeria by treesun(op): 11:28am On Jun 14, 2022
Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar has expressed confidence that Nigerian populace will oust the All Progressives Congress through their votes at the polls at the 2023 general elections.

Atiku said this in a series of tweets on Monday while reacting to the collapse of national electricity grid which has thrown a section of the country into blackout.
He stressed that the collapse of the national grid is a metaphor for the collapsing state of our nation, pointing to a collapsing unity, collapsing security, collapsing economy, collapsing education, among others.

Vanguard reported yesterday that the national electricity grid has broken down again on Sunday evening making the fifth time the country would experience a total blackout in 2022.

States that were affected included Kaduna, Lagos, Abuja and the entire Southeast region states of Imo, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi and Abia.

Reacting via Twitter, former Vice President said, “the darkness that has enveloped the nation in the last couple of days with the collapse of the national grid is a metaphor for the collapsing state of our nation: collapsing unity, collapsing security, collapsing economy, collapsing education, collapsing well-being and collapsing value of human life and dignity.”

Atiku further tweeted, “My expectation is that Nigerians will collapse the ruling APC in kind via the ballot and enthrone a viable pathway for the New Nigeria of our dreams that will be united and stable, prosperous and awash with opportunities; secured and inclusive. As one, we can get it done.”

The Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Education, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this while reacting to the excellent 96.0 per cent performance of LASU in the recently released National Universities Commission’s (NUC) Comprehensive Accreditation Exercise for the year 2021.

Wahab who was full of appreciation to the governor Sanwo-Olu for changing the face of education in the state, noted that the current administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S development agenda “is the fastest and most effective strategies in achieving transformational governance in the current democratic experience.”

Wahab noted that the state government’s huge investment in education as the third pillar of the Sanwo-Olu THEMES’ development agenda has repositioned the state education to become the model for the country.

According to the Special Adviser, “Out of 37 courses of the Lagos State University, LASU, presented by the University Authority for accreditation before NUC during October/ November 2021 NUC Academic Programmes Accreditation Exercise for Nigerian Universities, 31 of those courses representing 96.0 per cent got NUC full accreditation status.”

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ibiyemi Bello said “such excellent feat is unprecedented in the history of the University since its 40 years of existence.”

According to the notification of results letter, written by NUC to LASU and signed by its Director of Accreditation, Dr. Maryam Sali, which was made available to the press, “LASU, during the October/November 2021 Comprehensive Accreditation Exercise conducted across all Nigerian Universities, got full accreditation for 31 out of the 37 courses presented before the Commission with an excellent Grade of 96.0 per cent.

“Only 4 courses, accounting for about 10.8 per cent were still under interim accreditation status.”

The NUC Director of Accreditation while stressing the implications of accreditation status on various courses, explained that full accreditation for any course is valid for a period of five years while interim accreditation is valid for a period of two years after which the programmes or courses will be revisited for accreditation.

According to her, any programme that earns interim status after two visits shall be denied accreditation by the commission.

Professor Bello, while describing the 96.0 per cent accreditation success of the University as unprecedented, commended Sanwo-Olu for his leadership quality and administrative excellence.

According to the Vice Chancellor, the University had witnessed progressive developments since the inception of Sanwo –Olu administration, noting that, LASU programmes were running smoothly without any interruption because the governor has been showing great commitment to the growth of education with adequate funding while prioritizing the welfare of staff and students in policy formulation.

Also, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Special Adviser on Education, Adeniran Kasali, urged the Management of LASU to reciprocate the state government continued funding of the university by working harder and ensure that the university maintain its status as the best state university in the country and one of the first five hundred in the world.

In his remarks, President elect of LASU Students’ Union Government, Adeoye Moses, a 300 Level Student in the Theatre Arts Department, attributed the success of the accreditation to the state government continued funding of tertiary education and the appointment of a hardworking educationist as the 9th Vice Chancellor of the University, Ibiyemi Bello.

Moses, while describing the success of the University’s new accreditation status as a huge one, assured that the students would work harder to ensure that the University retains its current status as one of the leading universities in Africa.

He advised them to shun cultism, kidnapping, alcoholism, terrorism, rapping and other vices capable of denting the image of the university before international communities.
