Some communities in Niger State have entered a peace pact with bandits that have been terrorising their communities. The community leader of Kusherki, in Rafi Local Government Area, Garba Kusherki, who made this revelation on Thursday, said a delegation has commenced talks with the bandits. He said the bandits had earlier called for an agreement with the locals that they would not report them to constituted authorities each time they passed through their communities from the forests to other parts of the state to carry out their nefarious activities. Kusherki also said that one of the demands from the bandits is that they should buy kola nuts that would be shared among their colleagues and friends to know that a peace pact had been signed with the victim communities. He added that the bandits promised that peace would return to the communities if their demands are met. Narrating how the peace pact was reached, kusherki said, “As God would have it, on Thursday, the bandits called us to tell us that they wanted a peace pact sealed. So we sent a delegation that went to meet with them in the forest very close to Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State. Our delegation was asked to stay at Maganda and they came to pick them up. They said each time locals see them with cattle crossing their communities, they lay ambush and start attacking them. After all, the rustled cattle don’t belong to the locals and hence they did not see any reason why they should be attacked. So, they said they decided to get revenge.” The community leader said the bandits promised not to attack his community again, adding that anyone who attacks them would be punished. “They said after this peace pact, no bandit group will attack our communities again, and that if any group does, they will identify the group and deal decisively with them. But what we have been able to contribute is not up to the amount demanded. So we need support.” He also said that as part of the peace pact, some people who had been held hostage were released. Kusherki said the bandits warned them to stop attacking them and reporting to authorities each time they pass through the community adding that if they feel they want to fight them, they are ready to continue with the fight for the next 10 years. https://www.google.com/amp/s/punchng.com/bandits-residents-reach-peace-pact-in-niger-state/%3famp |

The Presidency on Wednesday, described the recent attacks in Owo, Ondo State and parts of Kaduna State as “planned and politically motivated criminal outrages.” This was as it said it would not be distracted by such intrigues. In a statement signed on Wednesday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the Presidency argued that the attacks are designed to set various regions of the country against one another. The statement titled ‘Recent spate of church attacks unacceptable’ read, “From the tragedy in Owo two weeks ago that shook our nation to its core, to the killings and kidnappings just this weekend in Kaduna State, it is clear that there is a design by wicked people to put the country under religious stress. “President Muhammadu Buhari believes that our religious freedom, our diversity, is what makes Nigeria great. It is this diversity that gives Nigeria its strength. That is why Nigeria’s enemies seek to destroy it, by putting us against one another. “We will not let them. The nation will not be distracted or divided by these obviously planned and politically motivated criminal outrages. The perpetrators are cowards; weak and wicked men with guns murdering, in cold blood, unarmed women and children at their places of worship.” “As for the cowards, they will be punished for their crimes. We will bring them to justice. Rest assured that the full might of Nigeria’s formidable security and intelligence forces are involved in that endeavour,” the statement added. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has decried the alleged extrajudicial killings by men of the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services and other security agencies at border communities in Ogun State. This was sequel to the unanimous adoption of a motion moved by the lawmaker representing Egbado North/Imeko Afon Federal Constituency of Ogun State, Jimoh Olaifa, at the plenary on Wednesday, titled, ‘Need to Rescue Asa, Oju Ogun, Ibeku and Agbon Communities of Egbado-North Local Government Area and Kajo, Apata and Agberiodo Communities of Imeko-Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State.’ Olaifa noted that Nigeria is currently faced with security challenges, which have resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of property, “thus affecting the socio-economic development of communities in the federal constituency.” The House also adopted a separate motion moved by Ibrahim Isiaka representing Ifo/Ewekoro federal constituency, urging the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to “urgently mobilise resources for condition assessment and commence immediate rehabilitation of the failed sections of the collapsed Itori Bridge, along Sango–Abeokuta Expressway, Ogun State.” https://punchng.com/owo-kaduna-church-attacks-politically-motivated-presidency/ |

President Muhammadu Buhari has stated that the attacks on churches and worshippers are unacceptable. A statement on Wednesday by spokesman, Garba Shehu, conveyed the President’s message. Buhari said it was clear that there’s a design by wicked people to put the country under religious stress The Nigerian leader referred to the massacre in a church in Owo, Ondo State, and killings and kidnappings in Kaduna State, Buhari said religious freedom and diversity is what makes Nigeria great. “It is this diversity that gives Nigeria its strength. That is why Nigeria’s enemies seek to destroy it, by putting us against one another. “We will not let them. The nation will not be distracted or divided by these obviously planned and politically motivated criminal outrages.” The President called the perpetrators cowards, weak and wicked men with guns murdering, in cold blood, unarmed women and children at their places of worship. “Seeing the crowd of Nigerians voluntarily rushing to donate blood after the attack, thronging the local hospitals, even in the midst of mourning, I was proud of my country. I was filled with hope. “As for the cowards, they will be punished for their crimes. We will bring them to justice.” Buhari appealed to Nigerians to come together in prayer – whether Christian, Muslim or any of our great faiths. He charged citizens to continue to cherish “what we share while respecting each other’s differences”. “Let us show them that Nigerians will never be bullied by cowards, extremists or terrorists”, the statement added. On Tuesday, the Orthodox Public Affairs Committee (OPAC) condemned the attacks on Nigerian churches and christians in strong terms. The body called on President Buhari to protect peaceful Christian population – the largest in Africa – from extremist terrorist violence. OPAC declared that the “continuous targeting of Christians during principal religious holidays is beginning to feel like Nigerian state-sponsored terrorism against its own citizens”. OPAC charged the United States Department of State to insist on measures to protect Christians within Nigeria. https://dailypost.ng/2022/06/22/attacks-on-churches-christians-unacceptable-buhari/ |

The mother-of-one, in a series of tweets on Tuesday, lambasted the state government and the Eti-Osa representative for allowing a petrol station to be situated in a “completely” residential area. The actress, who is married to popular Nigerian cook, Chef Fregz, also stated the presence of petrol stations in residential areas pose as a threat to lives and property in the area. She tweeted, “It still baffles me how the Lagos State Government; governor, Jide Sanwo-Olu; and the Eti-Osa representative sat still and allowed an ENYO filling station open in a completely residential area. “Now there’s fuel scarcity and people can’t get in or out of their homes easily. Let’s not forget the danger to lives and property. “We are reminded daily that this government does not care about the lives of Nigerians. But I see posters declaring heroism and asking for a continuation of what has started. Yeah, sure!” Fuel queues hit major cities of Lagos, Abuja and Ogun on Monday, forcing motorists to spend hours at filling stations. In Lagos and Ogun states, The PUNCH witnessed long queues at several filling stations such as Mobil, Capital, Fatgbems, Enyo, TotalEnergies and NNPC. The World Bank has said that Nigeria has the highest number of out of school children in the world with 11 million pupils recorded in 2020. The Nigerian out of school children was 15 million in 2003. According to the global financial institution, the number of school children under review who are between 6-15years increased by 100% between 2003 and 2020. This was disclosed in the World Bank document titled “Nigeria Development Update (June 2020): The Continuing Urgency of Business Unusual.” It revealed that the number of in-school children in 2003 was 20 million and has increased to 40 million in 2020, stating that the population of Nigerian children aged 6-15years in 2003 was 35 million and 51 million in 2020. It however, stated that more efforts need to be made to ensure Nigeria’s children are back to school. The Bank said, “Although Nigeria has experienced a significant expansion in access to education during the last few decades, it still has the highest number of out-of-school (OOS) children in the world.” The bank continued, “Nigeria’s more than 11 million OOS children between the ages of 6 and 15 represent 1 in 12 OOS children globally. The OOS children phenomenon in Nigeria is multi-causal and will require a combination of interventions. On the demand side, reducing the cost of education by eliminating school fees, providing cash transfers, and shifting socio-cultural norms that prevent school enrollment are critical steps.” Reacting to the report, Statisense disclosed that the number, “represents 1 in 12 of all out-of-school children globally and 22% of all children in this age group in Nigeria.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/06/nigeria-has-11-million-of-out-of-school-children-highest-in-world-world-bank/ |
