dejidotun2000: In a 3 phase star connected winding (which is what your transformer is), if the neutral terminal were to become ungrounded the neutral will rise with respect to the ground except the loading on the 3 phases is balanced.
The loading is never balanced thus you will find a voltage on it. Very correct. I was able to get PHCN tech guys to come check the site. They reported back that a loose cable on the tx was seen and tightened....That possibly brought about an unbalanced system as you opined. Thanks boss |

NiyiOmoIyunade: My Oga
I was reacting strictly based on the information you provided (my best interpretation of it). Surely, I may be unable to accurately diagnose an electrical fault (from several KMs away and based on just one or two sentences defining the problem ) better than you that was 'live at the scene of the crime' (so to speak)
No offense intended at all.
It is customary in Nigeria to have one or two phases with no voltage feeding in from the PHCN mains - still for the grid to pass power through to an inverter and loads, at least 1 live phase out of the 3 available is required as the source of supply .
Given 1 live phase and no power pass through the next check would be at the return wire (Neutral) - if you were able to substitute the Earth wire as return path and thereby reestablish power, then I inferred that the Neutral was broken/open somewhere in the network esp. if the neutral was presenting as a voltage source.
It could also be that you had a short circuit somewhere within the facility or the phase and neutral touching (e.g. tree branch pushing against power line) somewhere in the grid system.
There are several possibilities, you as the man on site are best placed to diagnose the issues and bring the learnings back to the house.
With electrical faults, my personal preference is to isolate the issue for sure and fix it immediately to avoid further problems downstream. Scene of crime ke...hahahaha. pls no offense taken too. if my statement passed off as such, my apologies pls. We are all here to learn.... Wrt to your statement of atleast 1 live phase needed for the inverter. the system i am talking about is a three-phase system that is designed to lock out grid once any phase is missing and i have since contacted the undertaking that serves that site to come look into the problem, but up till now, over 2 weeks ago "they are still coming" smh |

NiyiOmoIyunade: This may be one instance where it worked may not have been best practice except as a strictly temporary fix.
It seems to me you had an open neutral and by jumpering Neutral and Earth, you simply substituted the Earth wire as the return path for current.
By design, the Earth wire should carry no current unless there is a fault condition - all sorts of bad stuff could happen using the zero reference (Earth) as a return path for current on a routine basis. @bolded.... If that was the case, would i find voltage on the neutral line and no voltage on one of the phases? Cause that's what happened. Like you reiterated, twas a temporary fix. |

NiyiOmoIyunade: I have a question for the electricity buffs in the house.
A friend is constructing an office complex and his electrical contractor wants to install an RCD/RCCB at the service entrance to protect the whole facility (all personnel and devices downstream of the RCD/RCCB)
In order to 'improve the speed at/certainty with which the RCD/RCCB could respond to a fault and disconnect the supply', he has already jumpered/connected the Neutral and Earth bus bars in the DB with a 16MM cable - this installation is here in Lekki - while I know this practice of linking Neutral and Earth is common practice in North America and even mandated by their electrical code, I am yet to see it done here in Nigeria.
I had raised a similar question previously - what do you think? Should Neutral and Earth ever be linked here in Nigeria (I believe our transformers are star/wye wound and the neutral wire center tapped - dunno if PHCN actually Earths their neutral wire at the transformer)
Does this practice help the performance of an RCD/RCCB in any way?
The office will also have solar power tied in(where I come in ) - I am struggling seriously with wiring the CC Earth terminal to that same Earth bus bar in the DB that already has an AC neutral connected to it. One of our hybrid sites that has PHCN integrated developed a fault from the grid end that caused the line sensitive system to reject grid supply and troubleshooting brought up a possible neutral fault. I checked up online and saw that a possible reason could be be a broken neutral to earth connection from the source (aka transformer). I went to the change over switch and ran a jumper wire from the neutral bar to a ground cable there. (roadside engineering, i know ) i had to do it to keep the site from going down. it worked So i think the neutral to earth is connected normally from the tx side in Nigeria |

mctfopt: It's not normal. I really do not understand the part about adding a laptop charger to the system. You mean you added the output (in DC) of a laptop charger to the input of the CC or directly to the battery?
I think the problem may likely be the PWM CC. Try getting an inexpensive MPPT ,and connect the two panels in series. Do you ever charge with the inverter? If you do, what voltage do you get when you do. as for that mppt, i thoroughly researched it before buying that pwm and i felt it was an overkill for my system. i may have to buy it after all. btw, that powr model is actually a clone of the makeskyblue original fyi |

pls house is this normal?
i have a very small setup. two 100w panels in parallel charging a 180ahr battery. i average 40w draw on the inverter but thats not the issue. My battery measured 12.9v when i got it but i haven't been able to get it up to 12.7v ever since. i added a laptop charger to the solar input just to boost the input power. laptop charger clocks in at 89w and the battery voltages rapidly rises once there is power supply. but i noticed that once the battery voltage gets to 12.6v, the voltage drops to 12.4,3 and 2. looking at the wattmeter on the wall shows the charger watts drop to less than 3w.
my concern is why is the pwm cc disconnecting the dc source at 12.6v when it is set at a float of 13.8v? |

What's your say on microtek inverters? Been hearing good things about it lately. Like earlier adviced a battery balancer is needed for your setup, also its better to always do the numbers to ascertain what minimum amps your batteries need to be fully charges and confirm that your inverter is supplying enough or get a stand alone charher to supplement. I have someone who has been using a bluegate inverter with two 200ahrs batteries tho and his experience has been stellar. Mind you he has PV attached to supplement grid charging. Best wishes sir. |

Charge controllers are designed to throttle the current at it's maximum rating. What's really the function of that CB? As adviced, you can use a breaker that disconnects solar and battery together. NiyiOmoIyunade: Interesting idea. The possibilities are truly endless if you put your mind to it.
For the mentioned application though, I would be happier if you used a suitably rated contactor instead of a relay, granted your loads are small but I just prefer a sturdy device for switching and you would also need to isolate the loads the contactor will switch e.g you don't want your small Gen to try to power up the AC or Microwave or Freezer or other high wattage appliance when the mains supply fails.
See below a picture of contactor vs relay - see how small the relay contacts and internals are - hard to get thick wires into the relay and their mechanism of failure is also more a bit more spectacular.
Safety is very important above all else and we don't pray for any mishaps - for this reason, I have a bagful of relays I will no longer use since my needs are medium to heavy duty - free giveaway as well for anyone who can pickup who wants to use them for very light duty applications.
Now I am looking for that 80A relay Oga Dapsyra mentioned to play around with Source anyone Your concerns are well noted, sir. I am pretty confident of my loads and the relay rating. @free relays.... I wish i was near you oh. I laik osho free. @source... Arena at oshodi is a harbinger of all sorts. I saw a 3P 2T relay of 80amps the last time i went there. If that what you need i can direct you to the shop. I collected the seller's business card. |

Barezzi:
In addition to what Niyi has said, add a Time delay switch to delay load transfer to the generator. You don't want the contactor and by extension the loads to chatter during manual Gen startup. Chai, and i saw one analogue timer oh. I just overlooked it. I'm sure it wasn't more than #500 |
Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by Trippledots(m): 8:58pm On Jan 22, 2019 |
NiyiOmoIyunade: Lol My Oga. The sages say necessity is the mother of invention
You got a much larger contactor than I use - 80A 2NO 2NC to my own 40A so it makes sense that you paid more.
What I find though is you get better prices as you move closer to the source so my first ever set of LC1D25008, I got at 20k for two units including delivery to Lekki, same contactor I got now for 3k each as I cut out the middle man and moved closer to the mainland source - if you factor logistics they came at 4k each now.
Interestingly, I just took delivery of a batch of stuff from Ali... 25A Tomzn 2NO 2NC contactors and each cost under $6 - after my trials, they will now be my electrical switch of choice for large single load or multiple small load switching applications for my clients, the prices were so good I got a few random stuff as well - several large capacity AVS and diverse DC breakers - with a few hacks taught to me behind the scenes by a member of this forum, I got the entire package to land at my doorstep in a little over 1 week at a great price.
Your comment about duplicating dual AC source and output just sparked off a few ideas in my head, I will experiment and revert if I succeed - I may yet make my own Victron clone afterall. Hahahahaa.... I like that clone idea thingy oh. Isn't that what the chinese do?.... DIY can be fun abeg. @bolded... I'm reeeeally interested oh. I had to wait a month plus for charge controller and inverter ordered from ali. The wait was exhausting. Can we talk whatsapp if thats ok. My bio has a link to my Whatsapp. Expectant. @price.... I got that small 10A relays I'm using for #400 a piece. I just bought two incase one fails. It was dead cheap. I'm already playing with an idea in my head for the other relay. Whereby my manual start generator excites a second relay that transfers the load to the gen from grid. when the gen is put off it returns to mains. That way i dont have to always use a knife switch to switch between grid and generator manually. The gen will be turninoniown. |

NiyiOmoIyunade: Location is Lekki - you can pickup directly or arrange a bike courier - just let me know in advance so I can have it ready.
No plans to fix the inverter for now - I don't really use the charger function as I was setup to be 95% offgrid but middle last year, I setup a timer and contactor arrangement so that I would always use mains electricity if available between 8pm and 3am daily - I needed a contactor to route the loads through because I also had an AVS between mains and houseloads and the AVS would not pass the average 2kw and peak/burst 4kw of loads I had in the evenings and ditto for the timer too - they would just melt under the load.
I basically used the timer switch to feed power to the AVS (between 8pm and 3am daily) and then the AVS to energize the contactor coil only if the line voltage was between 210v to 235v. Both timer and AVS carried zero load, they just passed along the voltage signal for the contactor coil.
So I was basically using the inverter at the lowest charge setting since the primary goal was to bypass battery and power house loads directly from mains - but once the inverter charging function spoilt by itself, I happily got a second contactor to simulate the inverter's internal transfer case with the bonus that my setup was now more efficient with the charging disabled. So with 3k for the contactor and 15minutes spent rewiring I was setup and good to go.
Oga Pranil once said I needed to graduate to using ESS - well he was right! - Victron is the next brand I want to try once I am able to afford it - I have gotten tired of all the random issues with the Mustpower type inverters - the only ones I would touch now are those with an organised service center and good customer service such as Felicity. Wow.... Seems you are an electrical engineer. How close did i get? As for pickup, i stay at igando area. Very far from ur axis. Maybe I'll just stroll into arena market and pick up some power bricks there. |

NiyiOmoIyunade: Thank you Sir
I think you are on the right path - you could borrow a DSTV power supply - they output about 12.4v or so and I happen to have one or two lieing around as well if you are able to pickup.
No you don't need a resistor.
Interestingly, I was forced to start external switching between Mains and Inverter this weekend as my Red VilPower 6kw had progressively stopped passing the line over time, then stopped charging altogether on Thursday so by weekend I layed hands on a LC1D25008 contactor and removed the mains from the Inverter and routed it through the contactor and so far working beautifully - this will be the arrangement till I can save up for a premium inverter (been itching for a Victron for a while)
See if you can spot which wire is which from the pictures (I switched only live wires for simplicity and I used 4MM wires for all the Common and Load (I run two ACs and other stuff nearly 24/7) except for the signal wires which are 1.5MM @pickup.. That will be nice. Where do you stay? @contactor... Aww, thank goodness you have a good grasp of electronics. You would have spent some fine money trying to fix that inverter. right? But, since your inverter isnt charging anymore do you now use an external charger for your batteries? @victron.... Yes ohh, that thing is badass. We use their line of products where i work. @spot... I am not adept at contactor usage, but if i understood you well ; a pair of switched live wires, one common wire, one load wire, a pair of signal wires. Thats 6 wires. And i can see 6 wires. Lol. QED (i see the smaller signal wires) nice. |

The radical craft is being built by Lockheed Martin and Sikorsky - and has been revealed for the first time.
Craft could replace the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter and the UH-60 Blackhawk
Craft tops out at 300 mph and is able to hover 6,000 feet in the air
It could be the future of military helicopters.
Called SB1 Defiant, the radical craft is being built by Lockheed Martin and Sikorsky and has been revealed for the first time.
'The SB1 DEFIANT is designed to fly at twice the speed and range of today's conventional helicopters and offers advanced agility and maneuverability,' Sikorsky said.
The primary advantage that Defiant's going to offer over a traditional helicopter is, it's got twice the speed, two to three times the range, and is just an extremely maneuverable and agile platform,' said retired Marine Maj. Frank P. Conway, Sikorsky's experimental test pilot for both the SB1 and the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor, when the concept was first unveiled.
He called the Defiant 'a very hot, sexy aircraft.'
