Someone admonished that I should always issue a caveat when talking about electricity and electronics.

My first caveat is to not mess with electricity except you are suitably qualified via education and/or training and/or experience

With that out of the way, I see a few potential issues - they may not be deal breakers but I just want to clarify.

1) Please confirm that you are using a 10A relay as an auto transfer switch for your entire house loads between mains and inverter or Mains and Gen? If yes, I would be more comfortable if you used a larger size relay or a contactor with headroom for surge loads because a 10A relay such as you have is best suited to switching a single load/appliance and not several loads at once and ideally should NOT be used for INDUCTIVE loads.

Also, your inverter should natively be able to perform a neat changeover between mains and battery mode if nothing is broken.

2) As you have stated that your total loads are 500W - please confirm there is nothing with a compressor or motor in the list e.g Fridge or Freezer

3) Using a 9VDC power supply to (de)energize the coil - Did you verify the output of the power wws Zee? Though the minimum pickup voltage of a 12v relay coil is typically 7.5v, I would be happier with a voltage signal closer to the spec'ed 12v - using a lower voltage signal than spec, you stand the risk of the relay chattering or failing to make proper contact or dropping out prematurely all of which may have unpleasant side effects.

As it stands, it appears you have made it work against all odds but just checkout these points for safe and reliable operation.

Caveat noted loud and clear sir....i am comfortable to a reasonable extent working with Electrical wiring and safety.

First of all thanks for the response, and i like the way you reply. There is something just nice about it.

So to the points raised:

1)I did see the type of relay i went in search of, but that was only after i had picked the current one I'm using. I reasoned that that contactor rating was an overkill... All the loads I'm transferring are virtually non inductive; Led TV, led/ cfl bulbs, and a couple rechargeable fans. My ac, freezer, and a dedicated socket for maybe blenders and other motor loads will be permanently on grid supply.

2)Confirmed... No heavy inductive load.

3)Nice observation boss. I'll look for a 12v power brick to replace it. By the way, since its purely an inductor do i need to connect a small resistor in series with it? What do you think sir?

Yes any suitably rated relay/contactor with at least 1 each of NO and NC contacts such as LC1D25008 can serve as an ATS - please see example diagram below;

You may need additional circuitry to switch your Gen OFF/ON after power transfer though.

So here is the relay i got. Its rated for 10amps of which my load I'm transferring won't be greater than 500w so i think it will be ok. It uses a 12v coil that i powered with a 9v power supply which worked well. Plus it has a manual switch incase i need manual control.

From d little details u gave. U have a 12v 200ahr and u re pulling 12.5a already(150w) instead of 10a(120w max, C20 rule). U now want to kill d donkey by adding small chest freezer. How long does the battery last over night?. Under 50%Dod, u can't do more than 7hrs, except u have started killing the battery already.

Note: why put a 300w panel in parallel with 100w panels, are u an installer?

The most important aspect (and one which is often ignored / sidelined) is getting a hand on how much electricity you consume and how much you generate. Its not about how many panels/batteries you have. Its simple maths. If you consume more than you generate, your battery would be the one to take the hit and make up for the deficit causing bad things to happen to it.

A fridge or freezer is just a load at the end of the day it uses watts.. this watts are of no difference from that used by your TV or any other appliance in the house. Yes Refrigerator uses relatively high watt appliances and in most cases represent the defining load of most offgrid systems. You can easily run a freezer or fridge on an offgrid setup once you have a proper plan in alignment with how much electricity you can generate while keeping your battery at a minimum 65% state of charge / 35% depth of discharge.

When I started my offgrid journey, I had just 480w panels, Yet I was able to power the freezer for a minimum of 4 hours a day while ensuring that my battery always get to float, and never discharges low 60% state of charge. This was possible because I did an electrical audit and rationed my loads using battery peukert effect to my advantage. My energy consumption gradually increased as my as my generation capacity increased, today I have a panel capacity of 1840w and I have included the fridge to the mix, both fridge and freezer run at a minimum of 8 hours a day - 08:00 - 16:00pm. An I have just 2 220AH batteries. My system runs 24/7 yet my battery voltage never goes below 24.5v in the morning.

The key is getting a hang on your load, spending time to make you loads more efficient (not just using so called energy safers, but actually checking the watts of your appliances. Watts counting matters alot)

designing your system to cycle at 70% battery state of charge hence they won't be any need to waste money/time/energy on unreliable low voltage disconnect systems. If your system is deigned around a low voltage disconnect, then they is something wrong with you design.

My Humble Opinion

I just stumbled on this post. I want to ask a question.

I am building a very small system....i am rarely at home during the day and so i feel my battery(s) will charge well during the day.

Panels are;
3pcs of 100w, with one salvaged 300w panel all in parallel (its a 24v panel tho, why not just add it rather than leave it idle).

200ahr battery; and a an average load of 150w through the night (max 250w briefly).

Since im not always at home during the day, can i get/add a very small chest freezer to my system? any idea of any easy-to-get brand? Say 100-200ltrs and very efficient too.

Hope my question isnt long and winded.

I am assuming you want to switch over between Mains and Gen? If your inverter can already start and stop the Gen then I believe a suitably rated 4 pole 2NO/2NC AC contactor should do - you should be able to implement this solution for under 10k especially if your house wiring is single phase or 'naija looped 3-phase'.

Simply decide which power source has priority and put the live and neutral of that power source on the [NO] common side of the AC contactor and put the live and neutral of the power source to be overriden on the [NC] common side - interlink/bond the load side (goes to the house DB) of the AC contactor live to live bonded and neutral to neutral bonded and you are good to go. Only one power source will be able to feed from Common to Load Side of the AC contactor. You can even implement a Generator off function with the disconnect.

I made a good108Ah 12v pack from 18650 lithium ion batteries and the runtime was very impressive. But I have problem charging them with a regular deep cycle battery and the maximum voltage it can take 12.6 while an average charger will go to as high as 14v. I have already blown my batteries and planning to make another. I didn't use any BMS and I was able to charge to 12.4 before I forgot to monitor the voltage and it exceeded the 12.6 and the pack blew up. Pls can I get a 12v charger that I can set to cut off at 12.6 or how do I get a bms?
