Crime › One Killed, As Hoodlums Sack Fulani Herdsmen In Ogun by trutharena(op): 6:40pm On Feb 02, 2021 |
Hoodlums on Monday night attacked the Fulani community in Eggua, Yewa North Local Government area of Ogun State. The hoodlums allegedly set ablaze the house of Seriki Fulani in the community, Alhaji Adamu Oloru, killing one person and scores of cows. The attack was allegedly carried out around 8pm by the self acclaimed Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly called Sunday Igboho, who stormed the area. The Seriki’s Son, Suleiman Adamu, who confirmed this to New Telegraph in an interview on Tuesday, said one Alhaji Jiji was burnt to death, while his father’s settlement was razed down in the attack where more than 40 cows were killed.
“Right now there is tension everywhere. We managed to get our father out of the place during the attacks,” Adamu said. Adamu also confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun had visited the place and sued for peace. The State Chairman of Miyetti Allah, Abdulmumin Ibrahim also confirmed the development to New Telegraph, alleging that the attacks were carried out by Sunday Igboho himself.
“He (Igboho) was also at Oja – Odan but one good Samaritan called Dende did not allow him to set ablaze houses at Oja Odan. A formal complaint has been made at thr Eggua Police Station,” Ibrahim said. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state command, Abimbola Oyeyemi promised to get back to our correspondent.

I suspect Tinubu will eventually support Osinbajo/El-Rufai ticket.
They are not pushing Osinbajo currently because they need to shield him and unveil him at the time the opposition won’t be able to launch any barrage of attack on him to de-market him.
One thing I like Asiwaju for is that he can sacrifice a lot for his comrades and he is a great leader.

Crime › Nigerian Man Sentenced To 40-year Jail Term In United Kingdom For Double Murder by trutharena(op): 3:14am On Oct 06, 2020 |
28-year-old Nigerian man, Obinna Ezeoke, was on Thursday jailed for 40 years in the United Kingdom over the murder of 53-year-old Annie Ekofo and her 21-year-old nephew, Bervil Ekofo, at their home in East Finchley in September 2016.
According to prosecutors, Ezeoke, said to be a drug dealer, crept into Ekofo's home just after dawn with intent to kill a target of gang revenge.
On hearing a noise in the house, Bervil, a student and nephew staying with Ekofo, went to investigate and was shot at close range.
Ekofo, who also went to investigate the noise was shot by Ezeoke, a court in the Old Bailey, London, heard.
Prosecution’s evidence included a CCTV footage of Obinna’s car to and from the scene, a gun case discovered under his bed and gunshot residue. The car was discovered to have been bought and registered by Obinna using a fake name.
Obinna claimed the gunshot residue came from a different shooting when others had used the vehicle.
In a statement before the sentencing, Chantelle Mami, Bervil Ekofo's mother, said there were no words to describe how "traumatic" it was to have a child killed. She said, “We grow to accept that death is a part of life and we should embrace it. "However, no-one really prepares you for burying your child whose life was taken from them by another. "I have no more words as my heart is heavy, I just hope that justice continues to be served."
Meanwhile Ezeoke’s father, Chiedozie Ezeoke, accused the UK authorities of not given his son a fair trial.
“It is with an absolute sense of trust in our country that I make this appeal to your commission. I am putting up this letter to request your urgent intervention on this matter. My son was tried five times which is unprecedented in English and Wales legal history. "Justice William Davis allowed for the fifth trial, and differed reasons for that, until the conclusion of the trial, which was strange,” he said in a message sent to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and the Ministry of Justice. Education › Armed Security Officers Stop Striking Ojukwu University Lecturers From Meeting by trutharena(op): 9:53pm On Sep 24, 2020 |
There was drama Thursday at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, COOU, Igbariam, Anambra State yesterday as gun-wielding security men from the institution’s anti-cultism outfit chased away lecturers of the institution, preventing them from holding a scheduled meeting.
The lecturers under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) recently dissociated themselves from the planned reopening of the institution by its management, a development that irked the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Greg Nwakoby.
ASUU in the institution, led by Prof Alphonsus Aniebo and the zonal coordinator of the group, in Owerri Zone, Dr Uzo Onyebinama had made to commence a meeting at the congress hall of the university, when gun-wielding security men from the institution’s anti-cult outfit stopped them, asking all members of the group to leave.
The group left the hall and converged under a mango tree in the institution, but were also stopped from meeting but they insisted.
The immediate past coordinator of ASUU, Owerri zone, Prof Ike Odumegwu who spoke to journalists said, “the security men said they were instructed by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Greg Nwakoby not to let the group hold its meeting within the institution.
“We have never been treated this way before. How can the Vice-Chancellor send security men to stop us from meeting? They shut the door against us and asked everyone out of the hall as if we were common criminals.”
Prof Alphonsus Aniebo, chairman of ASUU in the institution said, “I have been queried because of this strike and this is geared towards terminating my appointment in this university
“It is very unfortunate. This union made a lot of sacrifices, we have been key to the struggles here. We will not be intimidated. In this university, there is no budget monitoring fund. TETFUND and NEEDS are products of ASUU struggles, but the VC is bent on killing the university because he has just three years to leave.
“The university wants us to break a national strike, but we have said we will not. We will keep following the national body of ASUU because every achievement he has here has been as a result of ASUU struggle,” he said.
Chairman of the Owerri zone of ASUU, Dr Uzo Onyebinama condemned the action of the Vice-Chancellor, refuting claims that the lecturers had no reason to go on strikes because they are not captured in the controversial IPPIS payment model.
“Let me tell you, our struggle has been on, for a number of reasons before the Federal Government brought in IPPIS. For the vice-chancellor to claim that IPPIS is the sole reason for the strike shows that he is not well informed.”
Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof Greg Nwakoby had days back stated that academic activities will continue in the institution. He stated that out of over 600 lecturers in the university, only a few were embarking on the strike. The police in Anambra state have arrested two brothers, Chigozie Simon 21, and Onywka Simon, 22, for armed robbery.
A statement released by the spokesperson of the state police command, Haruna Mohammed today September 23, said the suspects are brothers from the same parents as well as undergraduates at Paul University and UNN.

Sports › FIFA Ranking: Nigeria Achieves Highest Position In Seven Years by trutharena(op): 7:38pm On Sep 17, 2020 |
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have moved up from the 31st to 29th position in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings released on Thursday by the world football governing body.
This is the first time in seven years that the country’s national team has made it this high on the monthly rankings. Nigeria was last ranked among the top 30 best football countries in May 2013.
It’s over six months since the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted international matches before it fully returned earlier this month.
With the new ranking, the Super Eagles now ranks third in Africa behind Senegal who is ranked 20th in the world and Tunisia who is ranked 26th in the world. Algeria and Morocco also made Africa’s top five.
Ghana, Egypt, Cameroon, Mali, and Congo DR were ranked among Africa top 10.
Meanwhile, the 54 UEFA Nations League games that took place across Europe at the beginning of September had an immediate impact on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, which had remained unchanged since April 9.
While there has been no movement among the leading quartet in descending order: Belgium, France, Brazil, and England – Portugal (5th, up 2) have moved into the top five thanks to victories over Croatia (8th, down 2) and Sweden (18th, down 1).
Other countries moving in the right direction are Spain (7th, up 1), Italy (12th, up 1), the Netherlands (13th, up 1), and Germany (14th, up 1), with each gaining one place in the global classification. Wales (21st, up 2) climbed two rungs but remain just outside the top 20.
Russia, hosts of the last FIFA World Cup, are further back in 32nd but had the biggest gain in this edition this, ascending six places courtesy of wins over Serbia (31st, down 2) and Hungary (52nd, unchanged).
Despite not playing, Iran (30th, up 3) moved into the top 30 after Serbia and Turkey (32nd, down 3) dropped points.
Nigeria will play Cote d’Ivoire and Tunisia in friendly matches in Austria in October and the results are expected to have bearings when the next rankings are released.
