It's a good software engineering practice to write code incrementally, it helps in debugging and rolling back changes made. the little green lights helps you visualize your increments

So I see no wrong in hiring mangers or Senior devs using that to hire junior devs. I don't think any senior devs need Juniors to have the habit of throwing bunch of code in one pr to company codebase.

Exactly.

So what's your bench mark for annual commits?

Is the number of annual commits more important than the quality of projects?

For instance I prefer to save my projects locally and only push to github upon completion. Would I fail your recruitment test on that basis even though I can explain every line of code and my code is very clean and reusable?

All the projects on my portfolio are fullstack projects written with Typescript and PostgreSQL as database. I didn't start pushing them to github until recently because I didn't want to push nonsense tutorial toy projects to github like everyone else is doing.

Won't you rather test me on my coding ability that use stupid green lights on github to judge me?

I am not boasting but I can write better code and solve multiple easy to medium level leetcode problems using javascript, something most juniors with 1000+ annual commits can't do.

I have seen someone with 2 commits in a whole year who applied for an entry position. Last commit was not this year and was not employed at the moment. Further discussions showed gaps in other areas.

Saving your project locally and committing in large batches negates the whole point of continuous improvement. Github is not your hard disk. Do you even know why it exists? Do you know what continuous integration, improvement and development is?

GitHub is simply a starting point for discussions and your lapses therein will not limit you completely if you can demonstrate an ability to do required tasks and you are ready to start committing continuously as you code.

Going through your projects and seeing ‘nonsense tutorial toy projects’ actually helps you as it shows your progression and ability to learn new things.

To you, those parameters are stupid, but in production, your ability to do continuous improvement and development is a key parameter that anyone who has to review merge requests will look for.

Employers dont want boasters who believe they are better than everyone. They want team players. They want people who can collaborate with others on projects and not show offs that carry an air of toxic disdain around them. I don’t care if you are Luca Pacioli. If you are not a team player, you are not on mu team.

There are many aspects of real life organizational code development that you clearly do not understand yet. When you do, you will open another thread to chastise those who don’t.

Cheers

For entry tech jobs, i demand for your GitHub link.

The GitHub link allows me to see your annual commits and your public repositories.

In the interview, I discuss your previous projects (based on what you have on GitHub as a starting point) and review the steps you took and why you took them. You are at liberty to add other projects into the discussion but i would very much like to see your code.

In my short period of working with different developers, i have discovered that knowing how a developer writes code is important.

Finally, when discussing the candidate’s code base and asking probing questions, i am further able to weed out the obstinate fellas.

If you really wrote the codes on GH yourself, it is your time to shine.

CTOs who cannot be bothered to open a GitHub link are simply lazy.

OP, wait till when you head a team before giving opinions on how to recruit the best into your team.

Thank you.

Is there a backend already or the dev must be able to provision one?

Are there designs already or dev must have a designer on team?

Do you have an admin dashboard for the app already or dev must provide one?

These are the necessary questions any one really interested in rendering a service to you must ask before giving you a quote.

I'm surprised people haven't noticed that Apple uses Software to kill hardware.

I've been seeing comments on YouTube and on forums where people complain about this I thought it was a joke.

My first experience was after Updating my 13 Pro max
; Within few days the screen went blind, I checked on YouTube saw alot of people saying the same thing.

I spent 340K to get a replacement screen.

Second time was my 2020 MacBook pro,

Just refused to Power on, went to repair it, I was told it was a motherboard issue.

A new motherboard cost about 300K I just had to dump it at home.

Note: this is also after updating the MacBook pro.

I also noticed something on the comments, people who experience these problems are usually not EU or North America

It's Africa/South Americans that usually experience these sorts of problems.

I'm being careful with Apple, this is bad Practice.

Your phone screen got damaged days after the update. How could they have been related? In addition, if you bought your phone as used, the possibility of having fake components (including fake or hacked screens) that can fail unexpectedly is high.

As regards your motherboard, did you even do an SMC reset before going to computer village where one boy under an umbrella has concluded that your motherboard has returned to its ancestors?

If dumb girls and boys can own and use iPhones all across the world, dont you think an event such as a widespread bricking of devices after update would have been trending non stop? Why should we be hearing only from you?

Let me say it again - it will only work it you have a mini displayport to displayport connection. Anything else and you will have scaling issues.

I bought two different minidisplay port to hdmi adapters and I still had scaling issues. Unfortunately my monitor does not have a displayport input. If it did, maybe I would have gotten a mini displayport to displayport cable and the scaling issues would be resolved.

I will probably revisit the issue again with the different software solutions. I basically wanted to mess with a mac and the 2012 mac mini is the last truly upgradable mac out there.

Converting mini display port to hdmi (especially the early variant ) is a downgrade and you will lose resolution.

Your monitor should have a display port connection.

This is not an apple issue. It is in relation to the standards available in 2012.

Today, we have thunderbolt.

I suggest you go online and read up on the subject. My ultra wide is 2560 x 1080. That is HD, not qhd or 4k. Macs have issues with non native ultra wide displays.

Ironically the mac mini actually supports higher resolutions than HD, only in 16.9. Nothing could make it support 21.9

And I did a lot of research. There are some apps taht are supposed to enable proper ultra wide support, but I gave up on them after a point

The only non native ultra wide displays that do not have any resolution issues with macs are monitors with display port inputs. So you want a mini display port to display port adapter. That was the summary of sojourn where hdmi to hdmi, mini display port to hdmi, was unable to support ultra wide displays which have been around since 2013.

This model of 2012 Mac mini comes with an Intel i7 4th gen.

What I would have expected you to do is ask of the exact specs of the display vs mac mini.

If the op is not into ultra wide monitors he may not have any issues. Or he may. The widespread driver support of windows does not exist on macs.

A simple google search...use the mini display port and not HDMI. Thank me later.

The op has a 2017 and will not have your issues.

Use your tv first.

Connect to the TV via an hdmi dongle and if it displays, then you can buy a monitor.

He said I'll have to change the screen which will cost me about 250k

250k? I certainly will never spend that on a laptop screen which may still bring same problem in future.

What do you advise I do now?

How will I utilize the laptop?

The laptop still works well just the screen.

I'm thinking of using a monitor with HDMI but have never gone through this route before

How would you use a laptop like this?

qtguru, truthcoder

There is a display problem with the 2017 MacBook pro. I would have dropped some links to some reddit articles but Seun’s bots are kinda touchy and i dont want to get banned.

It is possibly a flex cable issue. Since i dont have full access to the laptop, i might not be able to say with certainty but I would advise you do some google research on this.

This is why i stuck to the 2015 MBP. The next jump for me is to the M1 MacBook Air and my only reservation has been the screen size.

Cheers

Before you buy an external monitor, do your research. Macs do not always play well with non apple monitors. I have an ultrawide monitor and my mac mini (2012) has refused to output that resolution.

As an aside this is why I always advice against apple hardware. It is by design intended to be replaced rather than repaired.

2012 mac mini is old.

How do you expect it to drive a high resolution display at the highest possible resolution without adding some extra GPU?

The simple fact that your 11 year old mini pc is still working speaks well of its build.

Programming / Re: What Linux Distro Would You Suggest For A Total Beginner by truthCoder: 6:19am On Jul 24, 2023
KrazyDave16:

Not an expert per se, but here ya go.

No "best" distro, each got their own specific use.

Ubuntu for beginners. There are other derivatives based on different desktop environments like K(DE)ubuntu and L(XDE)ubuntu.
Leave Debian for now. It's not the distro you want to start with as a beginner, given your skepticism.

Get a USB stick, flash it with Ventoy or Rufus (I prefer Ventoy). Boot into UEFI or BIOS, change the boot sequence to start with USB, guides already covers this.

Yes and yes if it's Ubuntu, else use a VM for any other distro like Debian. But still, let Debian be for now.

Some distro (emphasis on some) have this feature, where you either "test" it without doing the full installation to see what works or just install without testing. Ubuntu guides will have them installing without testing, quite normal.

Both have its perks, though I prefer to have it on my main system.
With VM, you can experiment without nuking your system, amongst other reasons, though it has its drawbacks if you're using an average PC or worse, a potato.

For me, I keep a VM to test new things out for different distros and learning purposes, plus I can kamikaze the distro configs without worrying about nuking my system.

Since you're skeptical, best you do everything in a VM first before installing on your main system.

Great comment.

Most hacking doesn’t you having a physical access to a powerful system any more. You can simply spool a VM from your phone and run your commands.

This is to allow others who are reading to understand that freshly written codes are not sold for 5k even if it is one line.

Before i go, do you guys who buy scripts dont review this simple vulnerability of easter eggs and backdoors? So i sell you a fintech script for 5k and you later ‘blow’, if i meeuve your funds, you will come out to say you were hacked?
