Like what things ?

The specs of a Laptop is not determined by the amount you bought it.

Your ability to scale up in tech depends largely on your ability to make simple research before committing time and resources to a project.

Other people’s time cost money. If the information is not available as open source, you must be ready to pay for it or ask nicely.

Wishing you the best in your new endeavor.

Holla amigos, I wouldn't want to type a long text here.

I just want to be brief and clear.

I just got a HP envy laptop for 885,000k last 2 weeks, it's very okay for programming, you can google the specs.

Lately, I noticed I've fell in love with tech and with the demand in tech gurus currently and in the future.

I need someone who can guide me on how I can go about it. what language(s) I should learn, where to purchase courses, like I need someone that can access me and know what fits me and everything I should know about in this field.

I'm someone that's always ready to learn new things, I'm never tired of acquiring new knowledge and skills.

I'll be glad to read opinions from experts here.

You will need to learn so many things apart from tech.

Many factors come into play here. I ventured into tech a year ago and the bootcamp in enrolled at started us with the very basics. Many people just want to jump into writing code right away but there's so many things you should start with like understanding Linux and being able to maneuver yourself around a Linux terminal, version control, shell scripting, vim, emacs etc I would advice anyone willing to thread any path to at least start by being a full-stack. Start with html, css, javascript, frameworks like bootstrap/tailwind,react/vue/next then learn api and database and some back-end(python, nodejs, java) build stuff while you're at it and learn some ui/ux(FIgma/photoshop). After you have fully understood(maybe not fully but at least enough to build stuff) you can maybe land a job and then use your free time to pursue better fields like cyber security, cloud etc

I agree with your first part.

People should learn their way around a terminal, bash scripting and version control. Learn how to use curl etc.

After that, i would recommend any programming language. I would also have a bias towards JavaScript and Typescript even before HTML and CSS. If you are Python inclined, you can go towards Python.

Learn how to build backends with your programming language of choice. Then, you can delve into stacks like ansible, vmware, openstack etc if you are brave enough. These are the skills needed in japaland and not how to center a div.

I make more money writing less than 20 lines of devops code than i can dream of in building a complete react website and i am not even a pro. Where do i even start competing from in the website mass production market with all these 10k naira php websites?

Many people recommend HTML and CSS as starting points but i am of the opinion that this is flawed and just wastes people’s time. This is why many people are still stuck at frontend and they believe that is all to know about programming.

Only for me to see the “19 digital skills”. I have no words. About time programmers say they learned 48 skills and list all the languages and techniques they learned

Although,It wasn't easy acquiring all that. Same as it isn't possible to acquire all at once.

So in summary, you learnt graphics design, digital marketing and some elements of programming?

I am a girl in tech who has been into numbers of digital since age 14. Now I'm 20. I agree not all digital skills are lucrative. Some are just useful hand in hand, but agree with me,it just depend on the level at which you monetize it and also, from whom you learnt that from.

If it's a right tutor, all these should be included in previous discussions.

I often ask my student, why do you want to learn this skill? To be sure it's not a herd mentality.

You should learn a skill that you know you have people you can monetize it with around,to start with.
Also a skill you know would be useful to your personal sef that you can start something with.

I acquired 19 digital skills already, and they have really been helpful hand in hand. Although,it wasn't easy to acquire that and build the experience up to the level at the moment. All it took was determination.

I'm also not against 9-5 job but like I always advice people, start something on your own. Tech is taking over and it's the future and the present.

What are the 19 digital skills that you have acquired?

Programming / Re: Are Nairaland Tech Guru's Truly Wicked by truthCoder: 6:56am On Jun 23, 2023
The OP is clearly a product of Nigeria’s failed educational system.

Someone writes their WAEC for them and helps them into higher institution. They copy another person’s final year project and claim to be a graduate.

Now tech is showing you shege pro max and you still need another someone to mentor you on how to center a div.

The level of entitlement can make a soul on dry fast to vomit. Nobody owes you anything, except maybe your parents and that’s up till say 18. You either pay to learn or you grind to learn.

I was given one week to master a new stack at one of my remote jobs. We already have a paying client and few days ago, I didn’t even know the stack existed. Do you think i will come to Nairaland to look for a mentor who spoon-feeds me as i doze away? I grind myself through the documentations, examples and ask questions on relevant fora.

Tech is not tailoring. Man up or go and plant corn.

PS: I have responded to dozens of emails and i have tried to answer their questions to the best of my ability. All our engagements have been mutual and i try to respect all parties, outside Nairaland banter.

I am also not a tech guru.

I'm on the DevOps path (haven't covered some key stuff like containerization and orchestration proper), it's really stressful, time-consuming and expensive (not necessarily immediately, but as you go further, you will unconsciously have the need to upgrade your hardware)

Tips I can give out to anyone who's interested in learning or already learning is;
1. Embrace the cli (terminal) wholly. If there are some tools with a gui, don't rely too much on it, or don't even rely on it at all.

2. Learn to automate your workflow. Be it via scripts, manifests/cookbooks, cronjobs. No need to cram everything, just automate them, plus time is real important too.

3. Join DevOps, selfhosted and homelab communities. Always found these communities fun and super helpful.

4. Be security conscious. There are lots of attempts to get into your server by bad actors and kids with their bots to do something stupid or something shady.

5. Be consistent. There are a lot of tool to learn, but know that you don't need to cram them all (see point 2).

6. Get a decent PC. A laptop is okay, but if you aren't gonna upgrade it or have plans to convert it into a server of sorts, get a PC.
As for which PC, I have zero idea.

Also is it me or does the font look weird?

Great tips.

It's a continuous learning process. I personally think a lot of people can get into tech support and system administration because they already have the basic requirements. Many of them can Google and find a solution to whatever problem their PC faces

Great resource.

@truthcoder learning those tools requires more effort and a lot of patience and perseverance. Setting up a small lab to then orchestrate many servers cost o. A small Lenovo Thinkcentre tiny with a fairly recent i5 processor and say 16Gb of RAM and say 1TB of SSD will set many people back at least ₦150k+ with no immediate rewards. Learning Proxmox for virtualization/containerisation and then going on to learn ansible and terraform will take at least 18 months to gain entry level competence.

I had suggested that this forum's admins spin off a new sub forum dedicated to non-programming tech without much traction on that post. I'm happy were you are trying to take the tech interest to

For a brief moment truthcoder, I thought you were trying to post to a lemmy community with your post title. I don siddon for fediverse tire this last two weeks

Great insights.

How about if these training schools that teach html invest just a little in hardware?

There are some companies that will offer entry roles to people with just basic understanding of playbook and CI/CD pipelines.

A lot of Nigerian devs and dev wannabes have been focusing on learning how to build websites , web and mobile based applications.

My few years of working mostly remotely has shown that whilst those skills are in high demand, there are other options that we should start considering.

There are jobs in other areas that dont need your JavaScript knowledge, are easy to master and pay better.

First, i would be recommending devops. Most Nigerians don’t know how to use stacks like ansible, terraform, gitlab, bash, etc and there is a lot of remote work here.

I would appreciate if seasoned developers who are not earning majorly from web development can share ideas so that upcoming tech guys wont waste time learning react.js.

Churning out statistics without proper and validated research is not a good thing.

90% this, everyone (implying 100%) is that…

The same Nigerian devs you complain about have part of the most valuable tech startups in Africa and get cumulatively, the most funding continent wide. Don’t take my word for it, check on Google.

And guess which stack they are using?

I am unapologetic about my JavaScript/Typescript leanings. I am not ashamed of it. My employers and investors are not complaining and my projects surprisingly work when I deploy them. I am not even a great developer.

I have seen programming wizards who can make codes sing in fewer lines than my comment here and they would never ridicule someone’s stack.

At the end of the day, it is not the tools that matter but your ability to make them do exactly what you want.

How do you build a product that is vulnerable to being a billions leakage.

I have used barter. It was a badly built app. You need to close and reopen the app severally if you navigate too deeply.

These guys are making it sound like the breach of Patricia personal isn't a big deal. If personal was breached, who is to say that the other services haven't been breached?

When did Patricia become award of this breach? And based on their forensic, when was this breach actually occur, because there is always a time lag between the actual breach and when it was identified. Given the antecedents of breaches at LastPass and 3CX, I have come to realize that businesses try to downplay the time lag between when it occurred and when it was identified. Also I don't see any advise to customers on what they Ned to do to secure their account. That is critical information that needs to be communicated so customers can minimize their losses

Anyway, I wish Patricia all the best in recovering from this

Bitcoin is involved.

They should know immediately once their available balance dropped.

They are claiming they know an individual, possibly a previous developer who they are trying to frame as a cover up.

The simple fact is that as long as the tech startup founders try to cheapen out who writes their codes, anything can happen.

If you think 20k usd is too much to build your tech startup codes, try computing the cost of a hack.

They try to hide behind the term ‘hack’ as if they did everything properly but the ‘hacker’ was so skilled that he broke all their hard security defenses.

The real truth is that their codes were shitty and someone saw a vulnerability and exploited it.

Hire good developers. Pay good money. Dont buy scripts upandan like okrika boxers.

Islam is coming up!

The only thing adding to the Islamic population is the high child bearing rate of its members. Islam has a negative conversion rate (which implies that more muslims are leaving islam than the number joining by choice.

This is common to Christianity too.

What you should be concerned about it the number of people who don’t believe in your gods. The number is growing every second.

People are getting wiser.

Islam would soon be the third and remain a permanent third as atheism overtakes the lot of story tellers.

Instead of branding everyone that comes online a scam, why not put measures to checkmate fraud. Like pay on site/sight business. i.e who want to buy, comes to location pays cash for the good and goes away and everybody is fine, "for each transaction", otherwise no business. I dont deny there are scammers, but some people have jam luck on this platform.

Is that your second account?

This allows for installation of current Mac Os.

My 2015 MBP currently runs the latest Ventura. Apple supports up to Monterey for it.
