So I totally agree with your first point. The only way to break in these days is via a marketing blitz. Meaning big money.

The Mastodon v Twitter and Signal v WhatsApp comparison I don’t totally agree with. I’m very active on Mastodon and actually prefer it to Twitter as it’s more sane and less “commercial”. Granted most Nigerians will know next to nothing about Mastodon but it is successful, it’s not yet mainstream but is good enough to be mentioned.

Signal on the other hand are a bunch of idiots. Compare Telegram and WhatsApp for a fair comparison. Even as successful as it is, WhatsApp, has very limited penetration in the US. I can’t remember where, but somewhere in Asia, Viber is king.
But yeah, very valid points you made. I’ve toyed with the idea of a forum using lemmy or the now archived open source Reddit codebase. Even looked at Discourse and Flarum. But to go against NL, you need that marketing budget. Loads of it
To add to the marketing bulaba, a cost vs benefit analysis of devoting a kuda kind of marketing budget to a business like Nairaland would need serious review. How much can such a business return both in the long and short run before the costs turn into a permanent drain.

Nairaland can afford to be overly flat as it is because it has a very minimal cost to revenue ratio. Nairaland does zero adverts, doesn’t have a customer care center and doesn’t even run a proper office. These costs would have to be borne by the new competition.

The disruptive idea must offer what Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Nairaland combined does not currently offer. It must be free to use. It must not have annoying adverts and the average dumb nairaland user must be able use it without asking for help. It must also load fast, consume less data, be able to work seamlessly on the crappy itel and tecno phones of most users and must retain at least a little sense of user privacy.

Why did you shut it down? Also was it Nairaland clone (copying the “outdated” NL look) or was it a more modern forum software like Discourse aor Reddit?

@OP,
I’m also intrigued why there aren’t many more successful Nigerian forums. NL and LIB were the vanguard respectively for forum and blog. And while many other successful blogs have sprung up after LIB, the same cannot be said for forums
I remember the project.

It was a clone with black background and green colored fonts.

There have been hundreds of new Nairalands springing up every time someone completes his HTML and CSS trainings. Many have even bought domain names and launched but they all fail.

The failure reasons are many but i have identified some few:

First, you need promotions to push the new site to the potential users. This cost money and many dont have. “Organic growth “ is a long gone possibility for new projects except something viral happens to it. You have to pay to play. Ask PayDay and Kuda wassap.

Second, the founder should not be greedy. Look at seun, despite the traffic, advertising is minimal. This makes using nairaland enjoyable. If the founder cannot survive without ads, he can’t overthrow nairaland.

Third is the unique offering deficit. If you are not bringing something new to the table, why would new users sign in. Mastodon, BlueSky vs Twitter. Signal vs WhatsApp. If you don’t come with gifts, users will leave.

There are many others but..

Reminderz:
lol talking about terrorism, non Muslims were the propagators and instigators of most wars in history... go and check your facts... and besides the religion doesn't condone violence!! anyone carrying out an acts of terrorism with the name of Islam is not Muslim period! Islam is the only religion which says whoever kills a soul (anybody at all) unjustly, it's as though he has killed all mankind, and whoever saves a soul, it's as though he has saved all mankind... Qur'an 5v32

if they are bad as they claim and as the media deceived you to believe, why is the religion growing in terms of new members and converts? isn't it supposed to be the opposite? if it was bad, why are people leaving their religion for it?
You either know too little about islam, or you are completely brainwashed to believe the stories you have been told or you are a pathetic liar.

The foundation of islam is terror. Islam was spread even by Mohammed through wars. They invaded other settlements and threatened to kill them all if they don’t accept islam. The ones that accepted were added to their armies, the ones that refused were enslaved.

There was massive pillaging, rape, beheadings etc committed by these jihadists.

Apart from the current crises in Ukraine, almost all the other crises in the world currently has islamic roots. ALL.

Look at Nigeria. The whole of the north (a region dominated by islam) has the highest insecurity, poverty and backwardness indicators of the whole country. Out of school children there is alarming. Many citizens are refugees in our country all because some people believe in Islam.

The whole world would be more peaceful and development would have gone way past current levels if islam did not exist.

Every human has a right to believe whatever or whomever they choose to. All muslims have a right to believe in Allah. However, dont come here trying to gaslight other people as if we cannot see the rot islam has brought upon the world.

Hi Nairalanders I am civil servant but I've taken deep interest in switching career to Tech (cybersecurity) I had started taking lessons few weeks back after completing Python
I want to ask is this career really lucrative in Nigeria and what's the average pay in Nigeria
Is it better to stay back in Nigeria and work remotely or I should relocate after abroad after getting my certificate
Am just curious
Who told you that you have completed Python?

Are you motivated by salaries or by passion?

If you dont get a job, can you create solutions with your skills?

Who is issuing your certification? MIT? Your certificates mean nothing. The fact that you attended trainings mean nothing. What can you do and what have you done means everything.

Dont relocate abroad to look for job without proper authorization to work. Get a remote job first. You can then consider traveling.

If you have a lot of savings, take a month leave and travel to the country of your choice to see how life is first. The best education is traveling. Try to see how easy it is to get jobs first You can now decide if you want to relocate or not.

Dont leave your civil servant job before you get another better source of income.

Cos my Christian wife has all kinds of demonic obsessions like nightmares, sees ghosts in dark etc, while I don't see such. She shivers in fear while I am sipping my chill. Mind you she has talked to her pastors grin
The moment you stop believing in all these religious stories and know for a fact that their stories are just horror stories is the moment those demonic dreams would stop.

Growing up, i had nightmares from these stories of witches and wizards our films wont stop telling. I stopped having those moronic dreams when I realized they were just stories.
FamilyRe: Should I Avoid My Mom? by truthCoder: 6:20am On Apr 27, 2023
whyteteeth:
It's draining dealing with my mom everytime she comes to the city to stay in the same house with me. I live in my elder sister's house but she (my sister) stays abroad with her family. I am the last child and I am not married. I work from home though. My mum vists here once in a while. Anytime she comes around she does a lot of things that spoils my mood. For instance, she doesn't like taking her children's advice no matter how important it is to them. She likes having her way all the time. And when we try to stop her, she guilt trips us and emotionally blackmails us.

I have other siblings who do not live with me but they used to come around with their children anytime mom is around. My father is back home and hardly visits. She doesn't listen to my dad if he advices her.

Mom will first and foremost get someone upset, and when the person complains, she will watch out for one negative word that will slip out from your mouth and use it to emotionally blackmail you. She will cry because of what you said to her until you feel guilty and beg her to forgive you. She also likes reporting her child to another of her child without minding if it would damage their relationship.

She likes making her child feel bad so long as she has her way and she is happy. She pays no attention to the feelings of her children anytime she wants anything. For instance, My mom can make you spend money on something that she already has. Sometimes she will drag for something that she doesn't even need. She feels as a mother all her children must make her happy else they don't like her.

Also, She is terrible with conversations both on phone and physically. If you try to have a one on one talk with her, she will make the conversation very unpleasant because she will keep interrupting, next thing she will cry or she will get up and leave you.

She never sees her fault. Even if she apologies, she would do the same thing again and blame you for making her do it.

If she comes around and everywhere is peaceful, after a short while argument will begin which may lead to a fight.

This is because she likes jamming one person with another person and eventually make them quarel. She enjoys adding words that was never in the conversation when she is reporting somebody to another perosn. Most times those words are very hurting and will lead to a fight. And when the fight begins, she will start crying. Sometimes she would intentionally fall on the ground while trying to separate a fight, just to make sure everybody runs helter-skelter trying to get her up on her feet.

She has blood pressure issues, hence she uses that a weapon to guilt-trip her children so they can succumb to her demands. For instance, if she says things that are not true about her child to another of her child and the person finds out, once you confront her, she would say " don't query me oh, shey you know my blood pressure would soon go up. I didn't kill my mother, don't kill me oh." Or she will just start crying and say the person hates her and what was said isn't true, and that she never said anything like that. She denies the things she says that are bad soon after she says them.

Gosh, I am just tired of my mom. I feel like packing out of this house, blocking her and not letting her come close to me because of how emotionally draining it is everytime she comes around.
Your mum is a manipulative gaslighter. That is the fact.

To survive around manipulators, you first need to avoid interactions with them as much as possible. For unavoidable interactions, allow the gaslighter to talk, say ok you have heard and do EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANTED TO DO in the first instance. Repeat this as a loop.

Dont fight or try to argue with a manipulator. They will hold on to any wrong word. Instead, do the listening. Ask questions to clarify their positions and say ok.

Ok no dey cause fights.

Say ok but remember to do exactly what you wanted to do.

Manipulator: you cannot eat rice in this house today because putin did this and buhari did that.
You: ok
Then you proceed to eat your rice.
After they notice you ate rice and they flare up, you feign ignorance, act like you didn’t hear them the first time, reverse the psychology on them etc.

Anything you do, just dont argue. Reduce confrontations to just simple statements but do exactly what you want to do.

When she reports you and the other person calls, just laugh it off. Remind the person that they should know ‘how mummy use to do’ . If the person is boiling too much, just say ok. Don’t argue.

When she realizes that you are just an ok machine with no interest in fights, she will look for someone else to fight with.

Remember, ok no dey cause fight

Be realistic for once. On what basis would OBI or ATIKU will the court case? Both of them could not garner 25% in 24 states. Where will they start in proving their cases? The truth is all of them rigged the elections in their strong holds, just that Tinubu out rigged them.
I am not sure they did not truly win as you stated. That should be left to the courts to decide.

One of their arguments is that Tinubu did not win. They presented their claims as to that. If the courts can agree with them, then it is a win for them.

The courts can ask INEC to conduct a rerun of the elections or award to one of plaintiffs.

Use your brain and stop being emotional unnecessarily
You are right on the fact that they should build more diplomatic bridges.

But you forget that trauma leaves a mark of distrust in the victims.

If your parents lost all their family in a war in 1969 before you were born, i am sure you might have some little resentment against the people who killed them especially if those wounds have not been properly treated.

This is the main reason why terrorism still exists in the north and Palestine is still a hot bed. As long as the underlying factors are not resolved, the problem will just regenerate.

You assume i am not using my brain. I have nothing to say to that.

Hate is wrong on all fronts and i would not support hate. Hate is dangerous and leads to unnecessary violence.

I did not infer hate in my post and i am not sure how you arrive at such a conclusion.

The Igbos have been marginalized. They deserve the chance to have an Igbo rule this country.

We also need it as a nation.

We need to stop seeing tribes and start seeing ourselves as one nation.

If Tinubu doesn’t assimilate Igbos into his cabinet, he has failed irrespective of what other positives he achieves.
