Recognising religion does not equate to non secularity. Does the American constitution not recognise religion also? Seperation of church from state does not mean the american constitution does not recognise religion, does it?
Well, that is American constitution. Nigerian constitution is different. Nigerian constitution does not separate state with culture. It recognizes the importance of our culture and that is why it is included in the constitution.
Kobojunkie:
Do you mind elaborating on the above? What religious competition?
All what you have to do, is to study the Nigerian problem. It relatively boils down to religion differences rather than ethnic differences. If you just look at the way churches and mosques are sprining up in every nook and cranny in the country, then u will understand some of what I mean. The church and mosques are competing for followers within the same religion. And then some issues between the Christain and the Muslims. If u take the Jos crises, it hav nothing to do with settlers and indegines, everything there boils down to religious difference.

It is because of the competition between these 2 religions that the questioneer asking for religion affiliation was not included in the National cencus.

B.O.S.S.:
When I was in London and I heard of the inroduction of Sharia law in Nigeria, I followed the news closely and read that it's in our consitution that these laws should be allowed (not quoting directly though) and also the case was taken to the courts (though I heard Obasanjo was against it) but he lost the court case against the northern governors and hence the effect of what we're seeing today.
Yeh, just search the Internet for Nigerian constitution, u will get it and check under the judiciary you will see we have Sharia courts and Customary courts. Customary courts are common in the south, particularly in the western part of the nation. And the sharia courts are common in the north. Reason for that is to provide easy means of arbitration of disbutes within our Nigerian customs, without the complexity associated with the common law (english law, which is alien to our cultures) These courts have bn part of the Nigerian constition even b4 independence.

Sky Blue:
Sharia law should never have been introduced period. Nigeria is a secular state, how on earth can you then have one law for the rest of the country and another for some? @B.O.S.S. if you doubt the popularity of sharia law in some northern states just try banning it and see what happens. Wasn't there and earlier attempt to do so?
Nigeria is not a secular state. Our constitution does not define Nigeria as a secular state. It is a state that recognizes religion, but does not give religion preferences. Afterall, when u look at some torny religious issues, both of the 2 religions share the same opinion. For example, like adultery, fornication, murder, homosexuality.

Anyway, I just feel sometimes, it is because of religion competition that is why we have some of these issues in Nigeria.

Well, on the other hand the people were rejoicing when sharia law was enacted. A cheap political move to placate a people who might have been disgruntled at all the looting that was going on, hence enact sharia law and you win popularity by a lot of people. So much for wanting to be like saudi arabia. As long as the sharia laws are only applied to mus'lims as stated in the article. If sharia was infact wholeheartedly embraced and encouraged in a secular nation by the indegenes of a state (might not have been a consensus) then those who embraced it might as well get used to it. Its like boiling water to drink then complaining its hot.
Yeh, the Sharia relaunching, was some sorth of political gimmick, for certain politicians to get political relevance. And they decieve the masses. The so called introduction of Sharia doesnt change anything in the states that have introduced the sharia. What they just did was just political relaunching. There have always being Sharia legal systems in the north, and they have being the main courts for arbitration in most of the northern states. Although the relaunching have cause alot of controversy in the country because the proponents & opponents does not even understand it was political gimmik, but now that the dust have settle, most of them have realized that

For your sake, I've just done a bit of cntl c, cntl v as culled from the BBC report. So do you still maintain you stance?

"The Hisbah are in charge of policing the morals of Muslims to make sure they are "Sharia-compliant".

They do not have the authority to ban the protest from going ahead, but told organisers they would report the demonstration to the police if they continued with it.

One of their duties is to reconcile quarrelling spouses and prevent divorce. "
But that is from a News reporters perspectives, not from the eye of the law. If u go to the Police and Civil Defence Register, u will find that the Hisbah is registered as a private security organisation. During the ethinic crises at the time of Obasanjo, the President try to ban Hisbah, and they went to the court to interprete some the constitution and their right to be registered as security organisation. Even though, they carryout Sharia activities within the states, but they do that within their boundary as private security outfit. Anything above outside their sphere, they report and lobby the police.

Sorry but I am going to have to seriously call you out on this. Since when did hisbah become constitutionally empowered to do the job of the police if warranted (which is not the case here)? This is like saying that private security guard or MOPOL are constituionally enshrined to conduct traffic light or charge traffic tickets. Absolutely ridiculous and I don't buy it.
The problem, is u are trying to look at it in more logical sence, perharps from your perspective as somebody stayin in a foreign country. But with the Nigerian law, the Nigerian Police can give license to private security organisations to operate within a a define boundary. Private security firms are everywhere in the world. Even in the united states or Britain, u have private security firms.

Kobojunkie:
Wow!! The people are constitutionally required to answer to vigilante groups?? Unbeweavable!! Is this group police for the islamics or are all residence to answer to this hisbah group?
Well, very unfortunately for we Nigerians, our constitution provided for establishement of private security agencies. These agencies are not the same as police, they register with the civil defence and the police to provide security. The police provide different licence to them. Ranging from just working as Night watch men, to full fledge armed vigilantee, and they have specific domain of operation. Just like if you go to any bank and try to misbehave, the bank security will arrest and hand you over to police, so are these vigilantees.
PoliticsRe: Sharia Police Block Women's Rally In Kano by Tsiya(m): 9:36pm On Jan 19, 2009
Of course I do. Their fundamental rights as wives, mothers, as Nigerians, as human, and even as Muslims (majority of Kano being Muslims) are being denied to them.

Kobojunkie:
How dare the BBC report on this? Who the Heck does the BBC think it is to tell the world of the atrocities committed against these women in a country like Nigeria?

This is a call to all Nigerians to boycott the BBC for such hypocrisy? There are destitute women in the UK as well but they NEVER report on such. This is all a rouse to paint Nigeria and its people as savages. People boycott the British and all things western, and know that America is behind this as well.
BBC have the moral right to report any news about Nigeria, and Northern Nigeria in particular. BBC hausa programme is the main source of our news in the north, and hence reporting this news is infact, suppose to be their headline.

Sky Blue:
Since when did the hisbah become a constitutionally enshrined law enforcement agency? How long will this silly indulgence last?
Hisbah are registered as private unarmed security organization with the Nigerian Civil Defence and the police. It is like any other Security organizations such as Dimond, Niger Guards and the other vigilantes approved by the government either to provide private security (as in the case of banks), community security (like vigilantees). Hence they have the constitutional right to perform their duty, as enshrined by Kano state laws, and approved by the Nigerian Police, within the boundaries set by the Nigerian constitution

The fact is that the boy is criminal. There have always bn criminals in Nigerian secondary schools for long time, some with money some without. However, for him to come out with such an excuse is an indictment on our leaders. Certainly there is unfari distribution of wealth everywhere in the world, but it is so apparent in Nigeria that whenever I remember how things are, I feel like crying.

Sahara reporters are have baked journalist that relies on fabrication and rumour.

Sisit what do u mean by GMFB?

Well, me I used to get confuse with all these love thing. I cant even understand what this love is all about. I just dont even know why a man can love so many women within a short period of time. It is always difficult to satisfy human beings. They always want more. Greed 4 money, greed 4 love, greed 4 romance, greed in everything. The most romantic couples sill feels something is missing. So I conclude everything is about perception.

Training before, after, in between. . . the point remains (at least for me) do not go into a relationship thinking you can change someone. I'm sorry to say this but you have an almost idealistic outlook of this and while I don't hold it against you, we have to be real here. You keep saying train him train him as he these are little pups whose only worry in life is having a warm bowl of milk.

Back to the training him,  so you do it, work morning ,afternoon and night yet it doesn't take because. . . you know these are people with their own minds and some sense, what then?

I think I'd much rather look at his flaws, what he is capable of, what my expectations are and the reality of them being me by him and decide for myself if I can live with what I will get from him. I'd also hope the guy will do the same thing with me instead of thinking "Ohh, Training 101 starts at 9pm after the first Hello"
Think you are right. I dont expect the woman that I marry should change my way of life and my perception. It is like loosing my indentity. My training. The culture my mother spends all her precious life trying to imbibe into me. My sense, my likes, dislikes, my interest, everything going into smoke screen because some woman want to rule my life. I think it is even the woman that should study her husband and try to change so that she will rhyme with my life, especially if Im a the provider.

Sisi Yaya kike?

You are very harsh on men. I dont think Im a bad man but I cant understand, is it not the women that sometimes cause wahala in marriage? My father told me you dont know ur friend untill 3 things enter between u and them: (1) Stay in d same room for some months or even years (2) financial obligations enters between the 2 of you (3) sharing responsiblity and power come between the 2 of you

Patience and compromise are key to all form friendship, and I think marriage should not an exception.

Kai sistawoman, if all women will be like you, life would have bn easy.Your advice and narratives are quiet exciting. They incite my hunger for marriage. How can I make my wife so understand? Should I assume that you could be like 10 years in marriage?
RomanceRe: Are Nigerian Guys Romantic by Tsiya(m): 10:46pm On Jan 16, 2009
I think everything boils down to our perception of our life. We have turn our life upside down and believe nothing good comes out of our culture.  What criteria are you ppl trying to use to measure the level of romance? Is it from what you ppl read in Novels or watch in movies or from your personal experience with the bature ppl? I think Nigerian men are romantic. And Nigerians would have been more romantic if we were financially bouyant.

Adamawa is not Hausa state. It is a state with diverse ethnic nationality, but the majority ethnic group are the Fula - Fulbe (the Hausa ppl call us Fulani). One of the special advisers to Kano state governor is Igbo, and there are many Igbo ppl all over the north. Religious crises in the north are not pretex to exterminate the Igbo population. They are crises that occur as a result of perharps I will say bad governance.

Ha ha ha ha!
I thought he has a vice ( that former mumu teacher from Ijaw)?
Yar Adua may take as medical trip as he like to Europe or Timbuktu but what about ailing Nigerian nation?
Nigerian nation need more medical attention than sicky Yar Adua.
The Vice is some how mumu. He just de behave like some kind Yeye Nigerian lecturers that have PhD but dont understand anything. Anyway, I think everything boils down to trust and also politics.

The funny thing is that the President does not trust any of his PDP people. He put Ashiomole (AC) who is just new, Fashola (AC), Yuguda (ANPP) and the Saraki (PDP).

Sky Blue:
How many more trips does he need before he is ready, considering he is approaching half of his tenure? Sometimes i think what that man needs is just a good flogging from his mum just to wake him up. It is difficult to believe he has not been asleep for the past 1 year and 8months.

Intergovernmental committee? It is now this is starting? Talk about giving the phrase "learning on the job" a bad wrap; does not help if the person appears to be a slow learner either.
It is not about slow learning. This guy have no even the strength to learn. U can only learn if you healthy and thinking very well. Right decisions cannot be made when u are sick. And it is evident from what is going on decisions are not made by him, nor by one person.
PoliticsRe: President Yar'adua To Go On 8-week Medical Trip To Europe! by Tsiya(m): 4:48pm On Jan 16, 2009
Yeh the guy is going for sick leave. I read yesterday in the news that he has set up intergovernmental committee that will steer the nation economy and make policy. The committee made of Govs of Edo, Lagos, Kwara, Bauchi and CBN. These are the ppl that will look after the nation when he is on sick leave. Notice that his Yuguda is inclusive, his new inlaw.

i was coming back from my aunt's place, i was in a bus, i was so pressed! i wanted to excrete! i didnt know what to do, there was no toilet and the bus was moving! i couldn't tell them to stop, what would be my excuse, even if i stopped there was no place to pass it out coz we were on the express.
I was sweating so profusely! Shaking, People were like "Fine Girl, wetin do you?" I couldnt even talk. I was totally embarrased!

Immediately the bus stopped, i didnt wait to collect change of N100! I ran into a nearby bush to pass it out.
It was utterly embarrassing!   grin
Yeh that could have bn embarassing if u shit in d buss

Some 3 years back I was going back to my village in the bus and there were 2 female corpers posted to the village sec school. They were inside the bus when I joined them, and of course typical of ppl coming from the south, they thought no one in d bus understand english, so they are busy talking and makin fun of the conduster and other villages. Then suddenly one of the girl told her friend that she want to fart, that she have bn holding it for a long time. He friend told her to do it silently and if it smells they blame us. And of course she did fart and after some few minutes they started raining abuse on all of us in d bus. I didnt say anything untill when we out of the bus, and I used my best english and told them what they did was not right. They were so ashamed and embarassed. I hav never sn  a person so embarassed in my life.
RomanceRe: Y R Girls Of 2day More Concern About How Much Uv Got Rather D U Trying 2 Holla. by Tsiya(m): 4:02pm On Jan 16, 2009
I think you have focus your thought only on todays condition. Right from the beginning of time, women goes for the people with the most influence in society. In the olden days, warriors and the kings or those close to the king get more women than commoners. This is due to the need for protection from the women and also subconscious gene selection from the women.

In the animal kingdom for example in mammals, you will notice that the female specie mates only with a dominant male. This is in order preserve the right gene. Take a time and watch docummentries about the sex behaviour in animals.

In todays world, the gene strenght by the female specie of homo sapien mammal is define by the amount of influence the wield in the society. This is usually characterize either in terms of knowledge, money or power, or certain special skills that are considered benefial to human society or have influence in human society.

To attract more women in the present day you have to be competetive among the male specie. However, thanks to modern health care system, we have more women than men. So the competition have lessen. If it was in the olden days, you will have to go wage war in the neighbouring community so that you can capture women, if you are lazy you become a servant
