Politics / Indonesian Execution Details In Real Life And A Filipina Spared From Execution. by TUMIC(m): 4:27am On Apr 29, 2015
This is a nation where drug traffickers vs smugglers are executed without sentiments. Here are their last minutes execution preparation in 3d real life.

11pm-11.30pm (Indonesian time)
A firing squad of twelve policemen gathered at the execution site. They were given wages of less than $100 for execution.
Policemen take position ten steps from where the inmates will be positioned.
The commander loads each policeman’s rifle with one round. Only three of twelve are live ammunition.
11.30-11.59 p.m. (Indonesian time)
Sentenced to death escorted from their cells.
Their hands and feet bound and eyes blindfolded.
Sentenced to death can choose whether they want to be shot standing, sitting or kneeling.
After final minutes with a religious counsellor the commander draws a black mark over inmates’ hearts.
11.59pm-00.00 a.m.
The commander raises a sword and policemen fire their rifles after he swishes sword down.
The Indonesian authorities decided to stop the execution of Mary Jane Veloso, now 30, to revise her case of smuggling heroin inside the country in 2010. The woman insists she was unaware of the real contents of the suitcase she was arrested with. The woman’s family also maintains that she was duped into carrying the drugs inside Indonesia.
Earlier on Saturday Indonesian court ruled out a decision to execute nine convicts including Mary Jane Veloso, within next 72 hours, despite pleas from UN chief, Amnesty International and foreign leaders.

Mary Jane Veloso was spared from death by firing squad in response to a request from Filipino authorities after a woman who allegedly gave her a suitcase with a false bottom containing 2.6 kg of heroin gave herself up to police in the Philippines on Tuesday. The request came last minutes before the execution. However, the other convicts, including four Nigerians, had to face a firing squad.

Politics / APC, The Ibos, And The Oba Of Lagos Lagoon. by TUMIC(m): 4:32pm On Apr 09, 2015
Since the Oba of Lagos, Riliwanu Akinolu was alleged to have threatened Igbos in Lagos to make them vote for APC/Ambode, i have tried to analyze the issue with the mind of being neutral and without bias. Haven tasked my thinking faculty to its fullest ability, i am only left with a question. And the question is, Now that the Oba of Lagos want the Ibos to visit the Lagoon for the last time, Should his words be seen as just mare saying, a hate speech, an induced speech, a threat or may be a War declaration. May i then ask, 'What If This Threat Is Carried out, what will be the implication'.
And in what light should the Ibos take it. Are they to start preparing for evacuation, or put on their own war regalia.

Not forgetting the Hate speech that led to the 1994 Rwanda genocide, and even the post 2011 speech by the then GMB that was later followed by the BOKO HARAM SAGA.
At this junction, my only questions are, ''When will Ibos and Yorubas stop fighting one another online with hate trends? Are we still Nigerian? Does Lagos state belong to Nigeria, or a tribe? Is APC now a tribal political party? Why are Ibos always suspicious of other tribes?
And when are we going to start practicing true Federalism and start seeing ourselves as one''.
You don’t have to accept what I have said, mind you it is just the way a see the things now trending in Nigeria since the election started.
Well the Lagos Lagoon is actually a very nice place to visit for relaxation. Let me give you a brief History on it.
Taking its name from the Portuguese word for 'Lake', the Lagos Lagoon is connected to the Lekki Lagoon by a channel that passes the town of Epe. The Lagoon then empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Lagos Harbour.
The city of Lagos itself stretches alongside the lagoon for more than 30 km, from the harbour to the northern suburbs. Near to the harbour is a large tract of wetlands where you can find the Lekki Conservation Centre. Visit the center to see some of the exotic wildlife that inhabits the lagoon including crocodiles, monkeys and hundreds of species of birds. So please do not fill our precious Lagoon with people, Oba of Lagos Lagoon.

Politics / Card Reader Test Successful – INEC by TUMIC(m): 5:38am On Mar 11, 2015
The Independent National Electoral Commission said it met on Monday to consider field reports from the public demonstration of Smart Card Readers conducted in 12 states on Saturday.

The states were Rivers and Delta (South-South), Kano and Kebbi (North-West), Anambra and Ebonyi (South East), Ekiti and Lagos (South West), Bauchi and Taraba (North East) as well as Niger and Nasarawa (North Central).

A statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of the commission, Mr. Kayode Idowu, in Abuja on Tuesday, said that INEC observed that its decision to deploy SCRs for the 2015 general elections had four main objectives.

These objectives, according to him, are to verify Permanent Voter Cards presented by voters at polling units and ensure that they are genuine, INEC-issued (not cloned) cards.

He said that from the reports on Saturday’s exercise, this objective was achieved 100 per cent.

Another one, according to him, is to biometrically authenticate the person who presents a PVC at the polling unit and ensure that he/she is the legitimate holder of the card.

In this regard, he said there were a few issues in some states during the public demonstration, but added that overall, 59 per cent of voters who turned out for the demonstration had their fingerprints successfully authenticated.

Nevertheless, he added that the commission, in agreement with all the registered political parties, decided that “where biometric authentication of a legitimate holder of a genuine PVC becomes challenging, there could be physical authentication of the person and completion of an Incident Form, to allow the person to vote.”

Another reason for the exercise, he added, was that the SCRs provided what he described as disaggregated data of accredited voters in male/female and elderly/youth categories.

He said this disaggregation was vital for research and planning purposes, but which INEC until now had been unable to achieve. The demonstration on Saturday fully served this objective, Idowu added.

He said, “The SCR sends the data of all accredited voters to INEC’s central server, equipping the Commission to be able to audit figures subsequently filed by polling officials at the Polling unit and, thereby, be able to determine if fraudulent alterations were made.

“The public demonstration also succeeded wholly in this regard.”
Education / Confusion, As Server Failure Mars Commencement Of UTME Exams. by TUMIC(m): 5:28am On Mar 11, 2015
The postponed 2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, billed to commence yesterday, nationwide, was again marred by some hiccups over the failure of internet servers as well as failure of the biometric machines to capture candidates’ thumb-prints and other data at some centres.
Another controversy which emerged was the complaints raised by candidates who registered for the UTME in Lagos State, but were posted to neighbouring states of Osun, Ogun and Kwara to write the examinations.
This development it was learned was as a result of shortage of Computer-Based Test, CBT centres in Lagos State to cater for the huge number of candidates billed to write the exams.
According to the Public Relations Officer of Joint Admission Matriculation Board, JAMB, Mr. Benjamin Fabian, Over 1.4 million candidates will be writing this year’s UTME across 400 CBT centres nationwide.
According to reports from the University of Nigeria, UNN, Nsukka, Enugu State, where the UMTE was held at the Department of Economics, the first batch of candidates who were expected to start the examinations did not start until at about 3.30 pm due to lack of the internet.
Thousands of candidates who travelled from different areas to the centre waited endlessly. JAMB officials who were on hand asked candidates for batch two who were to write their own from 10 am to wait so that they would not come back on Friday for the CBT.

It was however, a success story at Oko Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, where the institution had earlier established a CBT centre with about 2000 computers. The initial problems of lack of internet servers were rectified by some JAMB officials before the first batch started. About 24,000 candidates would write the examination in the school during the 10 days that the test would last.
This year’s UTME was initially slated to commence on Monday, March 9, but following some logistics problems, the Joint Admission Matriculation Board, JAMB, shifted the examination till yesterday.
However, despite the shift in date, which JAMB said was to allow it put its house in order, Vanguard gathered from some of the centres in Lagos, that the hitches persisted.
At the Island Computer College, XYZ Plaza, centre in the Ajah area of Lagos, candidates who showed up at the centre as early as 7.00am, could not begin their exams, as the College was said to be fixing its internet server which encountered technical problems.
The delay led to agitation by the candidates and their parents who had accompanied them to the centre. Save for the timely intervention of some police men and JAMB officials, the centre would have been thrown into confusion.
Similarly, at Chams City in Ikeja, the examination for the first batch billed to commence by 8am could not start until around 9am. Efforts by Vanguard to speak with exam officials proved abortive as none was ready to speak to the press over the issue.
This delay, it was observed forced hundreds of candidates for the second session to loiter around the Isaac John Street, where the centre is located.
At the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Akoka, there were about four candidates whose thumbprint did not match with what the exam body had on its database.
However, since other data provided by them during registration for the exams were correct, supervisors at the centre allowed them to be screened based on the exemption mode. This was even as three of the four visually impaired candidates expected to participate in the examination yesterday, showed up.
Posting controversy
Some parents whose children or wards registered for the examination in Lagos State but were posted to neighbouring states to write the examinations lamented that they had to pay more for travel and hotel bills over alleged incompetence of JAMB.
Also, at the Certified Institute of Shipping, CIS, Magbon in Badagry, candidates who went to the examination centre yesterday morning, were said to still be at the hall as at 7.25pm, when an aggrieved parent called our correspondent on telephone to complain over the situation.
According to the parent, who simply identified herself as Mrs. Adeola, “When the candidates arrived the exam centre this morning, they were told that JAMB provided the centre with just 250 laptops. Of these, only 150 were confirmed to be functional that morning. Following this development, the candidates were divided into two batches. While the first batch was to begin their exams by 7am, the second batch was billed to commence by 10am.
“But as I speak with you, the first batch and the second batch neither wrote the exams, as the JAMB officials in the centre complained that the centre’s server had been down since morning. What is more worrisome is that officials of this centre have failed to address the candidates and we the parents, instead, the candidates have been locked inside the examination hall since morning without writing the exams.”
Adeola then urged the JAMB authorities, to cancel the examination and fix new dates, when they (JAMB) must have completely put its house in order.
However, reacting to the development, former Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, NUC, Prof. Peter Okebukola, who lauded JAMB’s Registrar, Professor Dibu Ojerinde, for initiating the total CBT format for the 2015 UTME, however blamed the problems which marred the commencement of the exams in some centres on teething logistic problems.
Okebukola said: “I am sure this must be for logistical reasons and to ensure that candidates are best served in the most conducive environment to conduct a computer-based test. The technology has to be right. The security and surveillance against cheating has to be right. The power supply has to be right. The overall ambience of the environment has to be conducive for the candidate. To satisfy all these conditions next door for every UTME candidate is like asking for the moon.

Also, reacting to the low number of CBT centres nationwide, placed at 400, the former NUC boss, said: “I believe these are the centres that have met JAMB’s rigorous quality standards for now. It is important that the standards are met and maintained so that candidates will not use slips in the standards as excuse for their poor performance. As more centres meet these standards in the coming years, I believe there will be an expansion and increase in the number.”
Efforts to get in touch with JAMB’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Benjamin Fabian, to react to the controversies proved futile, as his telephone lines were switched off at press time.

Politics / Another Church Building Collapses In Edo (Real Life Photos) by TUMIC(m): 4:52am On Sep 20, 2014
One person has died under the rubble of a building that collapsed in Benin, Edo State capital, on Friday, 19 September, 2014.

According to the Nation report, the collapsed one-storey building located at 22, First Uzama Street, Off Oliha Quartres in Benin belongs to Christ Chosen Church of God. The incident occurred at about 12.45pm on Friday.

According to the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Foluso Adebanjo, one person has been confirmed dead while five others were rescued alive with injuries. He said there were however speculations that two more people were still be trapped in the rubbles.
It was gathered that the building, before it collapsed, served as offices to pastors in the church. However, the church management hired youths to demolish it because they wanted more space in the compound.

According to one of the workmen who survived, four out of nine people were inside the building when it collapsed.

“Some of us went out to eat because we were hungry. As we were eating, we saw many people rush to where we were coming from. We thought it was a fire outbreak. But when we got there, we discovered that the building has collapsed.
“We were nine in number but four of my colleagues were in the building before it collapsed. Two were brought out alive with injuries. One died and was brought out and two others are still under the building, dead,” the worker said.

Reportedly, officials of the church ran away after the building came down.

The residents blamed the church management for using young people to destroy the church instead of hiring a bulldozer.
The collapse of the building almost resulted in chaos as some angry youth vandalized and set ablaze a bus owned by the church in protest of the incident.

It would be recalled that a building at the Synagogue Church Of All Nations, SCOAN, in Ikotun area of Lagos also collapsed on Friday, 12 September, 2014.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, at least 80 people died from the collapsed building believed to be a guest house of the Synagogue Church.
