Watch this 14.58 minutes Documentary to appreciate the past leaders efforts in bringing the country to its present status whether the breaking up is an option:

The predictions that Nigeria will disintegrate in 2015 should be a challenge to an average Nigerian astuteness ensuring that all prophesies do not become self-fulfilling. The Nigerian Media, Intellects, stakeholders should join hands together in sharpening the mindset of an average Nigerian on this alarming news about Nigeria problems. Nigerians should agree that the country is precious enough to be saved, while revisiting the principle of federal character, admitting past mistakes, better approaches into implementing policies, developing a new mindset, and admit that an average Nigerian must make sacrifices for the survival of the country, with the fear of God at everyone's mind, Nigeria will survive.

Nigeria should be a country you can live peacefully, practice your religion freely, and hold a political post without considering your ethnic or religious affiliations.

As a Prophet of Hope, despite the challenges facing the country today (July 2013), Nigeria is not breaking up. With caution, it is going to be a United Nigeria till eternity.

So Help Us God!

It is appalling; in the modern world, that is becoming a global village for an individual, or any group for such threats. Neither of the two groups has the monopoly of violence, as they succumbed their faculty to the 1914 Amalgamation script. In addition to the projections of some world powers, especially the United States of America, that various groups in Nigeria could part their ways in 2015.

Do Nigerians have to elect a Northerner or South-South candidate as the President to keep Nigeria one? On the other hand, if we do not elect a Northerner as the President, or Jonathan is not re-elected in 2015, would Nigeria be History?

The soothsayers have, unfortunately, joined the snivel from the wilderness discouraging Jonathan from contesting for the president in 2015 as it is going to bring disaster to Nigeria, as they predicted in 2011. Unfortunately, a PDP choreographer has taken his campaign against Jonathan to the Northern leaders to select a President, with another South-South candidate as his Vice for the 2015 presidential election.

In this predicament Nigeria imposes on itself, is the amalgamation marriage vow going to be over in 2014, as we were educated that the amalgamation was a fraud? All Nigerians, with the North and South debacle, would assist in terminating the fraud in 2015 using Presidential election as the fishing bait.

We are of the opinion that either Dokunbo or Aliyu has the monopoly of violence. However, the dispensation of such violence depends on individual's judgement. The Niger Delta group directs its violence against injustices to their communities; while the Boko Haram directs on religious hideout on Christianity and humanities.

Whichever way each dispenses its violence, it is absolutely wrong for a real courteous solicitous human being to engage in violence as a means of redressing grievances, as violence begets violence. The issue of one Nigeria is for all Nigerians to decide, not a derelict, wheedled, and raw individuals.

Some inept politicians and community leaders, who think rulership is about rotation even without any meaningful progressive contribution to their communities, know little about nation building. Who among the chatterbox advocates of a divided Nigeria could face the battle when war is finally declared?

With good intentions, strong Faith in God, Nigerians should take their threats to the 2015 polls to decide whether Nigeria should call off the 1914 Amalgamation agreement, with a new dawn at the 2015 elections.

The way forward would be for Nigerians to chitchat and reach a compromise on how, or when the over 250 ethnic groups should part their ways? Dodging the discussion is like an average Black man saying that he would NEVER suffer from prostrate cancer, High Blood Pressure, or Sickle Cell Anaemia or that he is immortal and would live for ever.

Nigerians MUST talk.

Refusing to talk is like wanting to avoid variance in our daily life. The more you tend to cover up your incongruity the more it will be growing in your system until it explodes. It is like the silent killer in Black genes, High Blood Pressure. An average African assumes of being healthy as he falls asleep after eating 'swallow' food, to wake up with protruding five-month-size tummy with the accumulation of starch causing Diabetes and possibly some kidney problems, which send him to his grave earlier than programmed.

We wonder why Nigerians are afraid to go for the roundtable discussion on the amalgamation marriage dialoguing and setting a schedule on how to live together in good harmony. Nigeria must sit together to agree on the common ground. The mannequin approach to the 1999 Constitution review, where there has been agitation for about 61 States, is a chicken-way-out in getting working document for Nigeria. The 1999 Constitution needs to be expunged and replaced with a brand new Constitution.

Most Nigerians do not trust the imposed members of the Legislators at all levels of governments in Nigeria to do the job. A high level of patriotism, with unblemished individuals, to champion the course will create the road path for the Nigeria future. Many perks being enjoyed by the current set of politicians would prevent them from doing a good job on the Constitutional review.

Many Medical Specialists have prescribed Sovereign National Conference as a treatment of all ailments affecting Nigeria and as an antidote against future ailments. No right thinking Nigerian opposes convoking any conference to discuss issues affecting the country. However, an average Nigerian is sceptical about the much hyped magical prospects attached to the so-called Sovereign National Conference.

Ironically, the clamour for convocation of a national conference to discuss the state of the Nigeria nation has once split the House of Representatives maintaining dissenting positions. Nigerians would be wasting their good time if they place their hope on the National Assembly to come up with partial, even not full, support for the dialogue or roundtable discussion among Nigerians.

Most Nigeria current politicians are opportunists who are self-centred, representing 'do or die' politics of the later Day Saints. They would consider whosoever comes up with the SNC as enemies of the chop-chop incubators of corruption we call the National Assembly that is full of all sorts of human specimen of the underworld, courtesy of the revelation from Senator Nuhu Aliyu.

It is pertinent to ask the following questions: What makes a national conference sovereign? Who has the power to convoke the conference? What will be the status of the President, State Governors, National Assembly, and House of Assembly members upon convocation of the conference? Who will select the delegates, and what will be the criteria that will be used, to select the delegates? Who will implement the recommendations of the conference?

Alternatively, the Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has urged Nigerians to drop lingering clamor for national conference, saying it is no longer necessary in view of emerging democratic liberties. In place of the conference, he called for regional groupings, which would begin to "act the national conference" by taking their destinies into their hands. Possibly regional economic and developmental integration in the context of cooperation under a Nigerian national umbrella would be the way to go.

We should note that ethnicity, clothed with corruption, is an impediment to the national unity and progress, if we may add.

Another prescription to prevent the disintegration of Nigeria is for the country to derive its legitimacy from the people as lack of political vision at the centre and the various ethnic crises and security challenges, among others, call for the need for Nigeria to be recreated. Ironically, Nigeria is still operating the colonial and pre-colonial scripts; despite the involvement of Nigerians running its affairs as post-colonial governance, it is still, 'alien and predatory' like the colonial system. In effect, Nigeria's existence beyond 2014 or 2015 is a decision of Nigerians at a roundtable to air their interest and aspiration for the future.

he expiration of 1914 Nigeria Amalgamation in 2014, or the extinction of Nigeria in 2015, ending the unnatural marriage among Lagos Colony, the Southern and Northern Protectorates; and the yearnings for a roundtable discussion about the future of Nigeria, has been a mind bugling issue among the intellectuals, illiterates, semi-illiterates, educated illiterates, ethnic caucuses, religious entrepreneurs, to the sympathy of lovers of Nigeria around the world.

The process of dismantling the country has been heightened by the prevailing climate of insecurity which has resulted in needless loss of lives and properties. It has drawn the attention to the popular idea of Nigeria as a 'mere geographical expression'.

Was the amalgamation of Northern and Southern Protectorates of 1914 is terminating in 2014? Are some factions working on the script to end the 1914 document by 2014, with an emerging new Nigeria in 2015? Is it going to set the country back to the pre-1914 status of Lagos Colony, Southern, and Northern Protectorates? Would these people enter a new agreement under their own terms? How would this happen in the country where differences in culture, language, religion, tradition, values, morals, education, vision and beliefs prevent people from living together?

In his Amalgamation day speech, January 1, 1914, Lord Frederick Lugard, 1st Governor General of Nigeria, stated, among others things, "....it would be to the great advantage of the countries known as Southern and Northern Nigeria {emphasis mine} that they should be amalgamated into one Government, conforming into one policy and mutually cooperating for the moral and material advancement of Nigeria as a whole."

Some scholars are assiduously working to affirm the sustainability of the secret government document that the British left after independence on the unholy marriage. Regardless the experiment of a Century for Nigeria, it has been a rocky marriage from Independence (1960), through the fourth Republic, till today, (July 2013). Will Nigeria sustain the experiment beyond 2015?

The issue between the north and south rotating the President is due to the poor approach to true democracy. Some group assume that they have the monopoly of governance and leadership, instead of assenting to the selection of virile leadership with interest of the country at heart. With over 50 political parties in the country of over 250 ethnic groups, making a mockery of the Nigeria democracy under PDP, to dictate where the President must come from is undemocratic. Nigeria must revisit the issue of the Federal Character leading to the rotational presidency.

If Nigerian political parties were established on the platform of meaningful principles, based on the challenges facing the country, either Left or Right Wings, Nigerians would accordingly ally with such party. Nigerians must discourage any group claiming to have the monopoly of governance or leadership.

The Warri-Founder of Niger Delta People Volunteer Front, NPDVF, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, declared on Sunday, May 5, 2013 that "there will be no peace in the country, if Jonathan was denied a second term". On May 6, 2013, a former member of the House of Representatives and a member of Congress for Progressive Change, Hon. Farouk Adamu Aliyu, also threatened "it is either a Northerner as President in 2015, or there will be no more Nigeria." In another development on May 23, 2013, Dokubo-Asari said that he was into, "bullet for bullet, for those who want to stop President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 general elections."

Family / How A Father Slept With His Daughter 13y In Lagos. by TUMIC(m): 12:28pm On Jul 15, 2013
One night in June 2011, in a quiet neigbourhood in Ajangbadi, Egbeda area of Lagos, a 35-year old man sold his soul to the devil. While the residents slept peacefully, Adeleke Adetayo, who lived in a small apartment with his two children, woke up his first daughter, 13-year-old Bola (not real name), and asked her to pull off her pants.

That night, Adeleke, a commercial bus driver, raped his daughter as the little girl cried in agony.

"Blood was coming out from my body. He used a white singlet to clean it. I was crying but he told me to stop so that the landlord would not hear. My sister was in the room at the time. My father started sleeping with my younger sister last year," the girl told our correspondent as she looked down at her toes.

Bola's younger sister, Tolu (not real name), is just 10 years old.

In any African culture, sleeping with one's child is the most abominable form of incest. But once in a while, reports of such incidents come up.

Such traumatic experience most times leaves a very damaging effect on the abused child and it may take substantial effort by specialists to make such child live a normal life.

The case of Adeleke's daughters will bring tears to many eyes.

Unlike their peers who have the love of their parents and live normal lives of going to school and coming back home to the warm embrace of their parents, Bola and Tolu close from school every day with the trepidation of what awaits them at home.

They rarely have good food to eat as their father barely provide for their feeding when he comes back from his commercial driving job.

Their mother moved out in 2012, leaving them at the mercy of a predatory father who rarely had time for the children's welfare.

The children's mother, Kemi, spoke with our correspondent on the telephone on Saturday.

Her voice shook as she expressed shock at what her husband had done to their daughters.

She told Saturday PUNCH, "I moved out last year because it became clear I was not safe in his house anymore. My children and I were suffering. He was not taking care of us in anyway. We rarely had food to eat.

"He would beat me at the slightest provocation. When the beating was too much and it got to the stage where my mother was the one bringing food for us to eat, I took my children to live with my mother and I moved to Ibadan.

"But when my husband learnt about where my children were, he went to take them from there. I had no idea that while I was with him, my husband was already sleeping with his own children.

"I have not been able to eat anything since yesterday that I was informed about what that man did to my daughters. I am really sad."

Did Kemi starve her husband of sex when she was still with him?

She replied, "Sir, you need to understand that my husband was the kind of person who wanted sex every day. After two children, should we still be acting like children when it comes to sleeping with each other?

"He would ask for sex almost every day and anytime I said no, he would beat me up. Sometimes, he would pour urine on my head just to humiliate me for turning him down. He called me all sorts of names.

"I was a hairdresser, but he said I should stop the work, because he thought I was prostituting myself in the process. He called me prostitute at the slightest provocation. All these were the reasons I decided to leave him. I have seen my daughters a number of times since I left their father's house, but they never told me about what he was doing to them."

When our correspondent spoke with Kemi, she was still in Ibadan at the time, promising to come for her children the following day.

Asked what she would say to her husband when she saw him, Kemi said, "I don't want to see that man again. I just don't want to lay my eyes on him. That man is the devil himself."

On Monday, Kemi finally came for the children who were kept in custody of the Ikotun Police Division, pending the outcome of the test conducted on them at the Igando General Hospital and their father's arraignment.

She broke down in tears as she pleaded to take them with her.

When our correspondent saw the two children, they did not seem to understand what was happening.

The older victim spoke quietly, looking at her toes the whole time.

The young girl explained that she did not know what their father did with the white underwear he used to clean her up when he forced himself on her.

She said, "I don't know what he does with the singlet. Every time he rapes me, he uses the singlet to clean me up. He does it like once in a week.

"Anytime I don't allow him to do it, he sleeps with my sister instead but he would not give me money for food."

The older girl said she was crying after her father refused to give her money for feeding after turning him down one particular day. A neighbour saw her and asked what the problem was, she told the neighbour the truth.

The neighbour placed an anonymous call to a woman she knew in a not-for-profit organisation, who in turn informed Mrs. Esther Ogwu, founder of the Esther Child Rights Foundation.

On Friday, June 5, 2013, the police were informed and Adeleke was apprehended by men of the Ikotun Police Division.

Adeleke did not utter a single word of denial.

"It is true I was sleeping with them. Sometimes, I just have the urge to do it. When I cannot control myself, I sleep with them," he said in a tape recorded by the NGO officials who first confronted him.

These were the words Adeleke offered in defence when he was asked by Ogwu, the police and his landlord, why he slept with his two young daughters.

Our correspondent visited Adeleke's landlord, Mr. Amos Omooye, a pastor, who magnanimously gave an apartment in his house to Adeleke and his wife to live in for free.

Omooye told our correspondent, "Adeleke has been living in my house for the last 13 years. I never suspected he could do something as heinous as this.

"I had no idea he was doing that to her daughters whom I christened. They were born in this house.

"During one of the evangelical outreach programme of my church years ago, I met Adeleke and his wife living in a very terrible uncompleted building. I had to take them in to live in my house without paying. They have been living here ever since."

Omooye said Adeleke once made effort to get a rented apartment, but was kicked out by the landlord of that house because he and his wife fought endlessly.

The pastor said, "I took them back in when they were kicked out. I could probably have seen signs of what he was doing to his daughters if not because of a terrible illness I had since 2011. I was bedridden for much of the last two years, which is the period he was sleeping with the kids.

"But I recall that in the last few months, the older daughter was always crying. I called her one day and asked what was wrong. She said the father was treating them badly. I asked if the two girls wanted to see their grandmother, they said yes and I facilitated a visit to the woman.

"They later came back with clothes, food and other things. I never for once thought that the children were going through something that terrible. When the police came here to arrest Adeleke, I asked if it was true he was sleeping with his children, he said 'yes'. I could not believe it, I was shocked."

Ogwu, who has been handling the children's case since Adeleke's act was unearthed, told our correspondent that the mother had initially been apologetic about taking custody of her children instead of them being handed over to government officials for rehabilitation.

She told our correspondent, "Even though I have seen cases like this before, it still surprises me that with the abundance of brothels around, a man can still take his own children and rape them, not once but over a period of two years.

"When I asked him why he did it, Adeleke simply said, 'I just like doing it with them anytime I have the urge'. I was shocked. At the moment, we cannot rule out the option that he probably was sleeping with the children for fetish reasons.

"It is also sad that the mother, who could have noticed what was happening to the children, did not when she was still with the father. You have to understand that the rape started when she was still with the man.

"This is why parents need to maintain a cordial relationship and communication with their children so they will have the courage to confide in them.

"My organisation only counsels parents on ways to prevent the abuse of their children, we usually leave the victims' counseling part to the government. This is why we are planning to hand these children over to the government."

Ogwu said counseling helps to improve the chances of young victims like Adeleke's children to live normal lives.

But she added that even at that, the memory of the molestation they had gone through would likely live with them for the rest of their lives.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ngozi Braide, said Adeleke's case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department.

"He is going to be charged to court as soon as possible," she said.

Adeleke was indeed charged to court on two counts of defilement in a family court at Ikeja Chief Magistrate's Court, Lagos.

Before his case was assigned, our correspondent met a woman, said to be Adeleke's girlfriend at the court premises.

"To say the truth, when I asked Adeleke if he indeed did it, he admitted he did it. But what has happened has happened. The devil can use anybody," the woman said.

Nigeria has not set up a database for paedophiles as is the case in some developed countries. This may make it difficult to track multiple offenders who are often let off the hook after out-of-court settlement by families.

A report by The PUNCH in April revealed that victims' families often opt to settle out of court in order to put the shame of the incident behind them.

Unlike the often-reported cases of children being raped by outsiders or neighbours, Adeleke preyed on his vulnerable daughters.

It may never be known the extent of the damage that has been done to the lives of Bola and Tolu.

In the meantime, the family court has ordered that the children should be transferred to a juvenile home at Idi-Araba, Lagos for a period of three months.

Tips

* Maintain a cordial relationship with your children so they can trust you.

* Start giving your children sex education from a young age.

* Conduct physical checks on them regularly.

* Caution your female children to be wary of male strangers.

* Dress them decently.

* Screen the movies your children watch.

The Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme, SURE-P has assured Nigerians of smooth driving through the nation’s roads as funds are being provided for road rehabilitations.

The Convener, SURE-P/ Federal Road Maintenance Agency, FERMA on Public Works, Dr. Ngozi Olojeme, boasted that Nigerian roads are safe for smooth driving.

“Roads are actively being maintained in the phase one of the project. Nigerian roads were left in a dilapidated state to the extent that a lot of lives were lost. FERMA is devoting its energy to road maintenance all over the country. We have to work daily to achieve our mandate. We have been travelling across the states to ensure results are achieved. We are doing it geopolitically and every state will be adequately represented, so that Nigerians can travel on well maintained roads,” she said.

Dr. Olojeme boasted: “Nigerian roads are no more death traps. If you say they were death traps, yes, but now, they are not.”

She spoke while leading SURE-P’s technical partners, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA, on an inspection tour of the Abuja-Kaduna highway where workers were patching different portions of the road and clearing the grass along the median.

She also disclosed that five motorised truck slashers have been procured to hasten work on five major roads. They are Enugu-Port-Harcourt, Benin-Ore, Benin-Asaba, Ibadan-Ife, and Abuja-Kaduna highways.

Reaffirming the Federal Government’s determination to keep the Federal highways free of potholes all-year round, Olojeme stated that about 5,000 workers youths have been employed so far, and that the figure would be scaled up to 10,000 by year-end in first instance.

The aim, she said, was that they would provide safe, motorable road linkages across the economic zones of the country.

Speaking on cracks that were visible along the roads, she said keeping watch and patching them was the essence of the SURE-P public works programme.

Crime / A Man Caught Being Intimate With A Goat Was Found Eating Grass. by TUMIC(m): 8:29am On May 15, 2013
There was drama in Karatina after a man who had been caught having sex with a goat was found eating grass.
The man who was a matatu tout had been caught red handed committing the heinous crime with the goat by the animal's owner yesterday at night. He was later on found today morning eating grass. Speaking to the media, the neighbours
said that they were shocked by the turn of events and they suspect that the man was
bewitched by the owner of the goat. The man who looked busy eating the grass was unaware of what was going on as he kept
on plucking grass from his compound, chewing and swallowing.
The owner of the goat said that he had found the man having sex with the goat after tying its legs apart.
The goat was bleating which alerted him and he rushed to see what was going on. He was puzzled with the scene he met. He however refused to comment on the witchcraft allegations saying that he was sad as to why someone may decide to hurt a goat.
This comes at a time when locals were trying to absorb the news regarding the 12 ladies who were caught having sex with a dog in Mombasa.

Politics / Re: Yobe, Adamawa, Borno Under Emergency Rule by TUMIC(m): 8:24am On May 15, 2013
So this is what our beloved country has become.
Politics / Yobe, Adamawa, Borno Under Emergency Rule by TUMIC(m): 7:47am On May 15, 2013
Underscoring his administration’s determination to confront the growing incidence of violence and insecurity in the country, President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in three northern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.
Justifying the need for the
measure, Jonathan bemoaned the breakdown of law and order in the affected states, parts of
where he said insurgents had taken over. Jonathan, who announced this in a national television broadcast, said the detail of the emergency rule
proclamation would be
transmitted to the National Assembly. He said, “Following recent developments in the affected states, it has become necessary for Government to take extraordinary measures to restore normalcy. After wide
consultations, and in exercise of the powers conferred on me by the provisions of Section
305, sub-section 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended,
I hereby declare a state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states. “Accordingly, the Chief of Defence Staff has been directed to immediately deploy more
troops to these states for more effective internal security operations. The troops and other
security agencies involved in these operations have orders to take all necessary actions,
within the ambit of their rules of engagement, to put an end to the impunity of insurgents
and terrorists. “This will include the authority to arrest and detain suspects, the taking of possession and
control of any building or structure used for terrorist purposes, the lock-down of any area of
terrorist operation, the conduct of searches, and the apprehension of persons in illegal
possession of weapons. “I urge the political leadership in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states to co-operate maximally
with the Armed Forces and the Police to ensure that the exercise succeeds. We call on the
citizenry to co-operate with our security agencies to ensure a return to normalcy within the
shortest possible time.” Before the presidential broadcast, Jonathan had earlier in the day met with the governors of
Borno and Yobe states, Kashim Shetima and Ibrahim Geidam, respectively. Nasarawa, where members of a cult group, Omatse Militia, murdered 30 policemen late last
week, however, escaped emergency rule. Curiously, however, the President said the governors and other elected officers of the three
affected states would remain in office during the emergency rule, a measure that senior
lawyers, Itse Sagay and Femi Falana, hailed on Tuesday. President’s powers Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution provides for the imposition of a state of emergency in
the country or any part of it. The section empowers the president to issue the declaration
by way of official gazette. Sub-section 3 (a-f) of the relevant section states: The President shall have power to issue
a Proclamation of a state of emergency only when: (a) The Federation is at war; (b) The Federation is in imminent danger of invasion or involvement in a state of war; (c) There is actual breakdown of public order and public safety in the Federation or any part
thereof to such extent as to require extraordinary measures to restore peace and security; (d) There is a clear and present danger of an actual breakdown of public order and public
safety in the Federation or any part thereof requiring extraordinary measures to avert such
danger; (e) There is an occurrence or imminent danger, or the occurrence of any disaster or natural
calamity, affecting the community or a section of the community in the Federation; (f) There is any other public danger which clearly constitutes a threat to the existence of
the Federation. Prelude to emergency The President said the emergency declaration became imperative because the violence in
the states had defied various efforts by the government, including persuasion, dialogue and
consultation. He said from the various consultations he had with security chiefs and other stakeholders
since he aborted his last foreign trip, it had become clear that the violence was no longer
about mere militancy but what he called “a rebellion that poses great threat to the nation’s
unity and territorial integrity.” He said, “The activities of insurgents and terrorists have been reprehensible, causing fear
among our citizens and a near-breakdown of law and order in parts of the country,
especially the North. We have taken robust steps to unravel and address the root causes
of these crises, but it would appear that there is a systematic effort by insurgents and
terrorists to destabilise the Nigerian state and test our collective resolve. “Since I returned to the country after cutting short my visit to South Africa and aborting a
planned state visit to Namibia, I have received detailed briefings from our security
agencies. These briefings indicate that what we are facing is not just militancy or
criminality, but a rebellion and insurgency by terrorist groups which pose a very serious
threat to national unity and territorial integrity. Already, some northern parts of Borno State
have been taken over by groups whose allegiance is to different flags and ideologies. “These terrorists and insurgents seem determined to establish control and authority over
parts of our beloved nation and to progressively overwhelm the rest of the country. In many
places, they have destroyed the Nigerian flag and other symbols of state authority and in
their place, hoisted strange flags suggesting the exercise of alternative sovereignty. “They have attacked government buildings and facilities. They have murdered innocent
citizens and state officials. They have set houses ablaze, and taken women and children
as hostages. These actions amount to a declaration of war and a deliberate attempt to
undermine the authority of the Nigerian state and threaten her territorial integrity. As a
responsible government, we will not tolerate this. “Previously, we adopted a multi-track approach to the resolution of this problem through
actions which included persuasion, dialogue and widespread consultation with the political,
religious and community leaders in the affected states. “We exercised restraint to allow for all efforts by both State Governors and well-meaning
Nigerians to stop the repeated cases of mindless violence. “Yet, the insurgents and terrorists seek to prevent government from fulfilling its
constitutional obligations to the people as they pursue their fanatical agenda of mayhem,
mass murder, division and separatism.” Senate’s approval The Senate on Tuesday said the proclamation of state of emergency in the three states
was capable of stemming the tide of insecurity in the states. Leader of the Senate, Senator Voctor Ndoma-Egba, told The PUNCH on the phone after the broadcast by the President that the formal communication was being expected as prescribed by law. He said, “It is my hope that the state of emergency in the states will stem the tide of insecurity. “The state of emergency did not remove the democratic institutions, but entails the increase of troops deployment to the affected areas.”

It may not work – ACF The umbrella political body for the northern states, Arewa Consultative Forum, in a prompt reaction to the President’s proclamation on Tuesday said it doubted the workability of the emergency rule. Spokesman for the ACF, Mr. Anthony Sani, in an electronic mail message to our correspondent in Kaduna, reiterated the earlier stance of the group that a state of
emergency was not workable to curb insurgency in the region. “We had earlier expressed our doubt about the workability of a state of emergency in
bringing to an end the security challenges,” he said. The northern leaders’ preferential solution to the violence in the north had been that the
Federal Government should grant amnesty for the Boko Haram insurgents. Led by the
Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar Sa’ad, seen as the spiritual head of Muslims in the country,
notable northerners had canvassed the amnesty option for peace to reign in the region though leader of the sect, Abubakar Shekau, had rejected any amnesty to be offered by government. Shekau had indeed mocked the idea by saying the government should rather beg his group for amnesty. That notwithstanding, the government had recently set up a committee to determine the propriety or otherwise of granting amnesty to Boko Haram members. Support from , PDP, CPC, CAN The Congress for Progressive Change and the Northern chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria on Tuesday appealed to Nigerians to rally round the President in this trying period. They said this in separate reactions to the proclamation of a state of emergency in Borno,
Yobe and Adamawa. Spokesman for the CPC, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, told one of our correspondents on the telephone that it was gratifying to note that the President did not remove any of the political office holders in the affected states. Fashakin said, “We need to rally round the President in this trying period. We pray that with this action, peace will eventually return to the states. “However, it is gratifying that the President did not behave like a former President who removed the political structures when he declared a state of emergency in some states. “The action of President Jonathan has shown that the choice made by the people through the ballot would not be denied them. May God help our country.” Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo in the two instances had imposed emergency rule on
Ekiti and Plateau states during his tenure between 1999 and 2007. He removed the
governors and collapsed all democratic structures in the affected states while the
emergency rule lasted. Public Relations Officer of the Christian Association of Nigeria in the 19 Northern state and Abuja, Mr. Sunny Olibe, also said though belated, the President’s action was a right step in the right direction. He said, “The declaration of emergency rule by Mr. President did not come as a surprise
considering the degree of hostilities by the Boko Haram Islamic sect.
“No wise President will watch part of his country being taken over by lawless criminal without acting. It is the right step, though belated considering the number of lives lost.” The ruling Peoples Democratic Party declared support for the President for taking the step. A statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh, said the party would support every action taken by the President to restore peace to any part of the country. “The PDP supports the President on all actions that will restore stability, peace an progress in the body polity,” Metuh said. ANPP, AC uncommitted The Action Congress of Nigeria on Tuesday said it was watching the situation. National Publicity Secretary of the Party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said, “We are still studying
the situation.” The All Nigeria Peoples Party however said it was still consulting to prepare
an appropriate response.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Emma Eneukwu, said, “We are still consulting to see whether we will address the press tomorrow.” Jonathan in order – Sagay, Falana Two Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Itsay Sagay and Femi Falana, said Jonathan acted within constitutional provisions by not hiding under the declaration of a state of emergenc to remove the governors of the affected states. Both SANs, who spoke separately with our
correspondents after the the President’s address, said the constitution gave no room for
the removal of a governor of a state where a state of emergency was declared.
They both came hard on Obasanjo, who according to them, indulged in “blatant illegality” and “constitutional anomaly” by removing sitting governors under the pretext of a state of
emergency. Citing Section 11 (4 and 5) of the constitution, both Sagay and Falana said that even with its endorsement of the declaration by the President , the National Assembly, cannot go ahead to remove the governors of the affected states. Sagay said, “What Obasanjo used to do was blatantly unconstitutional and illegal. A state of emergency does not affect the sitting governor or the state house of assembly at all. “If you look at Section 11 (4 and 5) of the Constitution, you will see that a state of
emergency does not affect the tenure of the governor or the House of Assembly. The President has kept to the Constitution. If he had declared any other thing, it would have been illegal.”

Falana noted that Jonathan had not followed “the dangerous precedent of ex-President Obasanjo, who hid under the state of emergency to remove elected governors.” He said it was still impossible for a governor to be removed even when the National Assembly took over the legislative responsibilities of the House of Assembly of a state.

Residents of Ringim township in Jigawa State said they have experienced intense
gun fight between suspected members of Boko Haram and Nigerian troops after
some 30 bombs were exploded by militants that invaded the town.
A security source told SaharaReporters that several militants invaded the township with bombs and rocket propelled grenades. The attack in Jigawa marks further escalation and expansion of the sects armed insurrection in northern parts of Nigeria.
A caller said the gunfight has continued into the night stating that the gunmen have now taken over the home of former Inspector general of Police, Hafiz Ringim and the police station in the township is currently under attack.
Former Inspector General of the Nigerian Police, Ringim fled to the UK recently and sought political asylum claiming members of the deadly sect are after his life.

Politics / Boko Haram Should Be Sent Back To Hellwhere They Come From – Femi Fani-kayode by TUMIC(m): 9:29am On Apr 17, 2013
Former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has accused the President
Goodluck Jonathan-led administration of failing in its responsibility of protecting
lives and properties of Nigerians due to its inability to tackle the menace of Islamic
fundamentalists headlong.

Fani-Kayode who was speaking at the residence of the Awolowos in Ikenne Ogun State on Saturday when he paid a condolence visit to the Matriarch of the family following the death of Oluwole Awolowo, expressed displeasure over what he described as lackadaisical attitude of government in curtailing the activities of the dreaded sect. Fani-Kayode noted that no fewer than 4,200 Nigerians had been killed in the last two years by the sect, adding, “one of the main reasons why this government has not only proved itself incompetent, but also acting irresponsibly is the fact that 4,200 people have been killed in the last two years by this Islamic group.

“I have lived in the North for 10 years and I do not in anyway owe any kind of apology for people that make the business of killing others in the name of their religious faith to impose their faith on others; both Christians and Muslims.
“As far as I am concerned, this government has failed. It is a matter of law and order to protect the lives and property of Nigerians. 4,200 in a spate of two years is a record outside civil war. “It has never happened since 1914 apart from 1960 that 4,200 Nigerians have been slaughtered like chickens and goats by one terrorist organisation in the spate of only two years.
That is the record and legacy of this government as far as I am concerned.” He wondered why the Federal Government embraced granting amnesty to the sect when it could use its might to fight them, saying that the fight should be “battle to the finish” on the part of the government. The former minister urged the government to do the right thing by fighting Boko Haram on
all fronts. “Government should rise up to the occasion by doing the right thing and stop the issue of
amnesty.
They should show strength. It is an insult on the souls of thousands that have been killed for the Presidency to be considering granting amnesty to the Boko Haram sect.
“I identified with the position of the CAN President and many well-meaning Nigerians; there should be no discussion, no amnesty and nothing for the Boko Haram sect. The only thing they should consider is to send them back to hell where they come from,” he added.
