Daniyemi: A Professor of Counselling and Psychology
at the University of Lagos, Ngozi
Osarenren, on Thursday said ASUU’s
insistence on getting its demands met is
not out of a callous desire to keep students
away from school as their own children are
enrolled in the same schools, and are
victims of the strike.
“ASUU members are not barren. They have
children staying at home too,” she said.
Speaking on Sunrise Daily, she said the struggle
for a better education sector is not for the
personal gratification of the members and
association. She said “no ASUU member is
sharing from the money it is demanding.
“It’s for the revitalization of the education
sector and it’s very painful that people who
ought to know are shamelessly playing the
ostrich, pretending not to know,” she said.
The former commissioner for education in Edo
state disclosed that the association had sent a
letter to the Federal Government on the 22nd
of November but until December 5th , there
has been no reply.
“How come the government cannot
communicate to ASUU since then? The
government has not sent any reply to ASUU.
We are only hearing this in the media.”
She stated that they have been labelled
militants and described as subversive but “we
are not asking for salary increase. No ASUU
member is sharing from the 200 billion naira.”
She stressed the fact that no Nigerian
university ranks among first 10 in Africa
despite the title “Giant of Africa” which the
nation lays claim to.
She accused the government of regarding
ASUU members as non-serious people who are
not to be reckoned with, adding that what they
sent to the government was leaked to the
press.
Despite the Federal Government’s disclosure
that it has created an account in the CBN for
ASUU, Mrs Osanrenren stated that they have
only seen it in the media and that the
government is yet to reply ASUU’s letter.
Speaking about those who have resumed in
UNILAG, she said people who have other
reasons may have resumed but insisted that
there are no factions in the school.
“The press is making the faction issue in
UNILAG to thrive. If you are not on strike, it
does not mean that there is a faction,” she
said.
Asked when ASUU will call off the strike, she
said, “once we get official document to show
that these things have been done, ASUU will
call off the strike.”

Why did the Minister for Education not make this known all along? When was the account deposited and money deposited? Who are the signatories? Monday extended the deadline for
striking university lecturers to resume
work to December 9.
The government had earlier ordered the
striking members of the Academic Staff
Union of Universities (ASUU) to resume
work on December 4.
The Executive Secretary of the National
Universities Commission (NUC), Prof.
Julius Okojie, announced the new date
while addressing journalists in Abuja on
Tuesday.
Okojie explained that the government
decided to shift the deadline after it
received notification of Prof. Festus
Iyayi's funeral rites slated for between
December 5 and 7.
Iyayi, former President of ASUU, died on
November 12 in auto crash in Lokoja on
his way to attend the association’s
meeting in Kano.
According to Okojie, the decision is also
to avoid a situation where government
and ASUU will have to deal with the
ultimatum during the funeral of the
former ASUU President.
“We just received information that the
burial rites of Festus Iyayi begins on the
December 5 and would last till December
7.Based on this information, government
decided to shift the resumption deadline
to December 9, to enable lecturers to
participate in the burial.”
The executive secretary said the directive
had been communicated to the various
universities Governing Councils and Vice
Chancellors for onward transmission to
the academic staff.
Okojie added that there was no intention
to victimise any lecturer for participating
in the strike.
He said the victimisation clause which
members of ASUU were using to
discredit the government, never came up
when the unionists met with President
Goodluck Jonathan on November 4.
On the N200billion Revitalisation Fund
which ASUU wanted government to
disburse within two weeks, Okojie said
the money had been deposited in an
account in the Central Bank of Nigeria.
He explained that the money could not
be disbursed based on ASUU's demand
because it was meant for capital
projects.
According to Okojie, the order does not
require students to commence lectures
immediately.
He said any lecturer who resumed work
after the expiration of the new deadline
would not have his or her salary arrears
paid.
Okojie said government, as employer of
labour, could not fold its arms while the
institutions remained shut at the
detriment of students.

Good development, Now ASUU should wisely suspend the strike, I believe this is the best time. The permanent secetary of Fed Min of Edu should sign the agreement, that a enough beside all Students including nigerians are witness to the content of the agreement. Hearme: You write like a wise man, but your position is very wrong because it seems you lack knowledge of what's going on. The same president was part of the agreement as a vice.president and was on ground as president in 2012 when a memorandum of understanding was signed. If this two process failed, and the senate president can say those people who negotiated for government do not know their left from right, don't you think that it is wise for ASUU to get a commitment letter from Mr president or from the Attorney General of the federation (the most senior learned colleague and gov't legal officer) who knows his left from his right to sign the document rather than allow a perm sec to do so again. To prove that government is not sincere, when the vice president negotiated with ASUU, we all recalled that he was told to make it black and white, that is to say ASUU was ready to shift ground long ago, but needed evidence that government would not disappoint again.

In addition to this, universities have received award letters from government since September for infrastructure from the 100billion Suswan claimed to have raised. At this moment, no school has received a kobo after 3months. Is that not the same money ASUU is telling government to disburse and sign a binding letter? It just shows that there was no money anywhere to pump to this schools. And I also suspect that delay in the budget might not be due to disagreement on fuel benchmark alone but a ploy to allow ASUU call of and then the present 7% to education in the budget.

lets put all sentiments such as religion, ethnics and zones apart, and face the real deal. ASUU IS MADE UP OF PEOPLE ALONG THIS DIFFERENT LINE OF RELIGION, ZONE AND TRIBE, YET THEY ARE UNITED AND PURPOSEFUL. So you are so daft not to know that the new labour law( which deals with the relationship between an employer and his employee) which came to effect last year requires that any strike embark upon by an employee exceeding THREE MONTHS shall be PAY FREE! Secondly, there is no where in our laws where the president is required to sign an agreement reached with any union personally except such agreement is belateral(between 2 countries)! So for ASUU to ask the president to sign this agreement personally when the secretary to the ministry of education has already signed is a clear violation of the law!

The Academic Staff Union of Universities
(ASUU) on Thursday described the threat by
the federal government to sack lecturers if
they don’t return to classroom as empty threat
that could not hold water.
The union said it is vindicated that the Federal
government was not ready to implement
resolutions reached with the union.
ASUU said the threat will fail, adding that
Nigerian public universities need 60,000
lecturers due to government’s failure to
employ more capable hands into the system.
The union said federal government is wasting
the time of Nigerians youths by failing to
perfect the resolutions and get the strike
suspended.
The union added it had reasons to be wary
following the failure of government to honour
their promises to Academic Staff Union of
Polytechnics, resident doctors and other health
workers who have suspended their strikes.
The ASUU National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola
Aremu, while responding to the government’s
directive, said the threat does not hold water
as it has confirmed the fears that the federal
government cannot be trusted.
The don said, “With the latest action, the
federal government has shown that they are
not committed to all they have been saying.
We are saying that since we agreed at the
meeting that the sum of 200 billion naira is
for 2012 and 2013 revitalisation, the federal
government should deposit same in the Central
Bank of Nigerian. We are already in November
and December is around the corner. If they
don’t do that now, when do they want to do it?
We are saying the non-victimization clause
should be included as agreed while the
renegotiation of the 2009 agreement should be
included as agreed with the presidents”.
“It is a pity if the federal government is not
willing to perfect the resolutions reached with
union. This is why we find it difficult to trust
our leaders by their words. How can someone
be threatening to sack lecturers when
universities are already short-staffed by almost
60,000. We are not in military era. The
military tried it and failed. This one will fail
again. They can re-open the school. ASUU did
not shut down the universities. It was the
management of the schools that ordered the
students to go back home.”

Actually this is a solid counter respond from ASUU, now let wait for the D-day 4th december for the final showdown!
