Ubenedictus: galileo lack substantial physical proof that made it hypothesis.
And abt u last sentence abt the 'stifling' of science i get ur line of arguement, and that stifling only happened becos galileo and co were argueing scripture. That was like and invitation to the church. Copernicus was never suspect of heresy because he kept his work within d realm of science, galileo became suspect of heresy because he took his arguement into religion he was no longer on science but on theology dat mean he was asking d judgement of d theologians. I hope dat ansa's d first question.
It is truly unfortunate that his condemnation may have stalled enquiry into our solar system.

Christianity EtcRe: Anony's Soul Theory Destroyed By Richard Dawkins! by turnstoner(m): 11:28pm On Jan 11, 2013
Deep Sight: Let us start here:

1. What is a soul conceived as?

2. What is human placenta, and what is its function.

3. Is Consciousness equivalent to that which the soul is conceived as?

4. What is the exact relevance of a genetic imprint or DNA code to the constitution of a physical being

5. How do the foregoing questions support the notion advanced in the OP.

Let me have your answers to these, and then we can discuss further if still necessary. In truth, your answers to 1 and 2 alone should show you my issue with this thread.

Many thanks.
Let's start with 1. and I assure you that this alone can take all day.

I wonder what your take on this is: that a scientist's definition of the soul is not quite the same as the average man-of-faith's. Dawkins probably does not believe in the existence of the soul!
Christianity EtcRe: Anony's Soul Theory Destroyed By Richard Dawkins! by turnstoner(m): 10:54pm On Jan 11, 2013
Deep Sight: I have not mentioned any reasons whatsoever: and I may choose not to. I am too old to spend my time spoon-feeding red eyed rabbits on things that are lamentably obvious.

Please go and have a look at the OP again and tell me if there is any sense whatsoever contained in it. Tell me if it even remotely addresses itself to what in fact a soul is conceived as, and then tell me if the analogy made therein is not fit only for a classroom of dim-witted bovine recidivists, whose brains have been shriveled by centuries of hunger and congenital idiocy.
I have looked at the op again and i can't understand which of these really got you going:

1. Lack of a brain or inability to be conscious = lack of soul
2. baby's placenta is a genetic twin of the baby

The two statements are consistent with the current state of science.

tobechi20: No doubt, science has a lot of contradiction.

They make a law and later a new discovery nullifies the law.

One notable law which has allways been contradicted is the laws of thermodynamics
various discoveries such as bomb blast has prooved it wrong.

Any explanation for such contradiction?
Which of the laws?

1st, 2nd or 3rd?
How did bomb blast prove any of them wrong?

Christianity EtcRe: Evolution: The 'evidence' Behind The Pictures by turnstoner(m): 9:08pm On Jan 05, 2013
davidylan: But that would make very little sense now would it? I mean your point is that humans are closer to a cob of maize on the evolutionary chain than fruit flies? I cant believe someone with a brain actually postulated that.
The comparisons i have made are about primates. No where in my post have I compared humans with drosophila and or maize cobs. Its a well established fact that all living things originated from primitive prokaryotic cells. Plants and animal cells later formed separate branches. It is ancestry we are talking about is it not? Humans have 46 chromosomes while the maize plant has 20: where is the closeness?

Its clear to me now that you don't know what you are talking about. Do you even know the difference between a maize cob and a maize plant?

Try and educate yourself about this things at the library or google before you come to NL to waste people's time. I am done with you - permanently!
Christianity EtcRe: What's Up With Nairaland Atheists? C'mon!!! by turnstoner(m): 10:05am On Jan 05, 2013
Onyegecha: I am not an atheist. I know there must be God somewhere. This earth could not have been an accident. However, i do not believe in organized religion. Each one claims that they know the name of God, He told them this or that, He is a member of their sect and other such nonsense. That is where i beg to differ. The worship of God should not be a group affair. Individuals can only develop their spirituality by relating to God personally. Joint belief breeds nothing but hypocrisy because the individual's belief clashes with the group's belief, but he has to hide his true convictions in order to belong.
Great guns!

You are on the highway to atheism!
Christianity EtcRe: Evolution: The 'evidence' Behind The Pictures by turnstoner(m): 9:55am On Jan 05, 2013
davidylan: That would be assuming that you're using yours right? I mean you're not contributing anything cerebral to the topic, just stumbling around incoherently with pointless knee-jerk nonsense then telling others to use their heads? Are you serious?

The jokes section is on the next board. thanks.

I have my head screwed on tight, that is why i despair when clearly ignorant blowhards like you come here pretending to be knowledgeable about science. I asked a simple question... does the fact that you share 60% of the DNA of a cob of maize suggest you are descendants of a similar ancestor? Perhaps you should answer that question rather than stumbling around exposing your own dearth of intelligent things to say.
Sorry O! I thought you being a ''biologist'' would be able to work it out for for yourself. Obviously am mistaken.

The closer two species are the smaller the percentage difference in their genetic constitution, see?

Among the great apes, the chimp is closest to us humans and so the difference in our genetic constitution is about 1%. The percentage diff. between us and gorillas and orangutangs is much wider - btn 3 - 5%.

Therefore, 60% is pretty wide enough gap btn humans and the maize plant.

This ok for you, block-head?
Christianity EtcRe: Evolution: The 'evidence' Behind The Pictures by turnstoner(m): 7:49pm On Jan 04, 2013
davidylan: so you do share the same ancestry as a cob of maize? You shouldnt be silly.
That's the point, davidylan, use your head for goodness's sakes!
Christianity EtcRe: Evolution: The 'evidence' Behind The Pictures by turnstoner(m): 9:57am On Jan 04, 2013
Uyi Iredia: In fact the DNA of chimpanzees has been sequenced and is believed that they are the closest relatives to man. But similarity is an inconclusive ground for proposing ancestry. There are many organism that are similar that don't come from the same parents.
Don't be silly! You and your cousins didn't come from the same parents, but you share the same ancestry; not so?
Christianity EtcRe: Nigerian Church And NOISE TERRORISM by turnstoner(m): 1:09pm On Jan 03, 2013
Church/mosque noise pollution has been a menace for a long time. Until there is a critical mass of people who see it as what it is - noise, it is going to be with us for a long time still.

In most cases the small rooms from where this noises emanate don't need the speakers for the devotees. So, clearly, the noise is for the benefit of the public - whether you are interested or not. How dare anybody suggest that they are not interested in the word of God?

There ought to be a law banning noises that are above certain decibels to protect the rest of us from noise harassment but who is going to pass such a law in this religion-crazy country?

Christianity EtcRe: Is The Church Our Mental Institution? by turnstoner(m): 12:14pm On Jan 02, 2013
advocate666: In europe and other medically developped countries, psychologically unstable people go to good specialised mental institutions but no such advanced places exist in Nigeria. Instead what we have are churches full of unbalanced people. They stand, sit, kneel, murmur, shout, speak strange languages, dance, etc. The kind of behaviour would see in good psychiatric ward.
Then, they pay their pastor/psychologist and go home feeling happier. Just like unbalanced europeans after seeing their psychologists.
But the christians will tell you that they do not suffer from any mental problems, which begs the question: what then is wrong with christians?
Yes. Religious lunatics need an asylum. Where better to refer them than the church?

There is a short story by H.G. Wells. It is called The Country of the blind, where the one-eyed man thought he was king.
The one-eyed man tried in vain to convince the blind people that he could see but in the end, the sightless people ran him out of town.

Lesson: if we don't confine these religious lunatics to their asylum, they would do it to us O!

cyrexx: I think the exact quote goes thus:

I've begun worshipping the Sun for a number of reasons. First of all, unlike some other gods I could mention, I can see the Sun. It's there for me every day. And the things it brings me are quite apparent all the time: heat, light, food, alovely day. There's no mystery,no one asks for money, I don'thave to dress up, and there's no boring pageantry. And interestingly enough, I have found that the prayers I offer to the sun and the prayers I formerly offered to God are allanswered at about the same 50-percent rate.
I think "The big question" kind of forum will be very interesting. It will help remove the fear and anger religious people have towards atheists and atheism. In fact I saw a vidoe on youtube where a church in the US actually invited an atheist for a public discussion and everything went on with no animousity. We all, theists inclusive, need to come to terms with the fact that atheism has come to stay. And to those who think logic is trying to convert people to atheism I will say it is almost impossible to convert a person to atheism. You cannot imagine how scary it is to discountenance something you have held to be true all your life just because someone told you your beliefs are basely. Dropping religious beliefs take strength, courage and strong desire to seek the truth. It goes beyong arguments, discussions and "evangelism", its a personal decison. I have been a christian and am now an atheist and I must tell I fight constant battles everyday just to assert my position. People are fearful and hateful of you when they know you do not believe in the existence of God(s), after listening to you they add amusement to the list of the feelings they have for you. They want to argue everything with you and tell you those things you do not have ready explanations for are actually the works of God.
Secondly, what we do not need is yet another ideology. there are too many of them around already. What we really need is more true followers of Christ. . . . . .and we need them desperately as a nation.
And Moslem will tell you that what they really need are more true followers of Islam. Never mind that, within Islam, Shi'ite s are knocking off Sunnis and vice versa; ditto for the numerous sects of Christianity. We already have many avowed Christians, whether they are true or not is not my concern. They haven't led us to the promised land. Besides, we have bokoharamism to contend with.

As a multi ethnic and multi religious society, what we need is more secularism. This is or should be part of the agenda of atheists on this forum:

to promote secularism,
encourage economic growth through healthy rivalry of economic world views and that
the vigorous enforcement of the rule of law here on earth as more important than God's judgement day.
Now he is calling for an organized ideology and movement all with the aim of suppressing people's religious beliefs. If he had the power, I am sure he will ban religion in Nigeria.

Calling for an organised ideology/movement is not such a bad thing after all. This country needs a dose of organised ideologies instead of blind tribal/religious allegiances. As for banning religions, how could you be so sure? Remember the saying: giving a dog a bad name in other to hang it?. You are guilty!
