As the recession bites hard, different Nigerian states are adopting strategies to cope with the tough situation, through rice production. Cross River State is not resting on its oars in this direction, establishing what it calls a "Rice City".

In 2015, the Cross River State government and a Thai firm, Thai-Africa Corporation had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of what would be the first Rice City in Africa.

Details of the project as highlighted in the MoU indicated that the Rice City will have a solar mediated and automated rice seedling and nursery propagation centre, rice plantation with irrigation infrastructure and mill including packaging and distribution.

The centre will also have an Agriculture Training Centre, which will oversee the development of various economic crop projects including but not limited to oil palm, sugar cane, cassava, maize, soya beans and more.

It will also have a full mechanised site clearing, planting, weeding and harvesting equipment.

Well, the project has commenced, and here are the photos.

It is unclear where this incident took place, but it is clear the man has been stripped naked while leading a ram. A Facebook user, Mosignor Sim, was incensed over the issue. So were other Facebook users who saw the post. They complained that men were walking free after stealing billions of naira and others were persecuted for stealing an ordinary ram. While sharing his post, Mosignor Sim writes,

CareerWhy I Flogged Radio Bayelsa Staffers - John Idumange by tyokunbo(op): 4:55pm On Feb 25, 2017
Nairaland shared a post about John Idumange, the Bayelsa Radio General Manager who flogged staffers.

https://www.nairaland.com/3646562/radio-bayelsa-gm-flogs-four#53992190

However, Idumange has come out to confirm that he flogged four union leaders of the station in self-defence.

Idumange said on Friday in Yenagoa that the incident happened on Monday after the union leaders shut down the FM station operated by the state government.

The Radio Bayelsa Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Radio Television and Theatre Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) had alleged that Idumange was running the station outside public service rules, but Idumange alleged that the unions in the station were working against his reforms aimed at repositioning the broadcast outfit.

“At about 7.20 p.m on Monday, the day RATTAWU and NUJ embarked on strike, I heard voices near my window.

“So I went out to see what was happening. I saw four persons, one of them a lady.

“I could recognise Tonye Yemoleigha, one of the union leaders, who was in white shirt. I asked why they were there after chasing away all the workers,” he said.

According to him, “Tonye stood up and asked if the compound belonged to me. At that point I discovered he was ready for a fight but I did not bulge.

“He brought his hands near my eyes so I blocked it. I had learnt Karate years back. One of them threw a chair at me and they all rushed to fight me. I had to fight back in self-defence.

“They could have beaten me up but my Karate skills rescued me,” he said.

Towncrieronline.Net learned Idumange was appointed on Dec. 6, 2016.

He claimed that he recently uncovered a N5.7 million fraud and redeployed some staff.

“The transferred workers have been meeting with them at NUJ Centre, they benefitted from the corruption and are fighting back,” Idumange said.

Reacting, Mr Tonye Yemoleigha, the NUJ Chairman in Radio Bayelsa, said that the unions had reported the incident at Ekeki Police Division.

“Four of us, myself and three staff were flogged by Idumange himself. The report that it was thugs is inaccurate. It was the general manager himself that attacked and beat us up.

“We have reported the matter to the Ekeki Police Division and sought medical attention at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.

“Workers have been constantly intimidated and threatened for no just cause.

“Mr John Angese, Bayelsa Council Chairman of NUJ who is a staff of Radio Bayelsa, said,

“We are all being victimised for insisting that the General Manager complies with Public Service Rules.

“We have been under siege since he was appointed on Dec. 6, 2016. We are not opposed to repositioning the station which is in our interest, but we want the procedure to follow due process,” Yemoleigha said.

Towncrieronline learned that after the station went off air, the management mobilised armed security men and few employees who rebuffed the strike and reopened the station.

Yemoleigha said that workers of the station were not opposed to staff redeployment.

“But we are insisting that the unions should also be part of the process to ensure that the best hands are not sacrificed on the altar of nepotism, sentiment or witch-hunt.

“We are also aware of the alleged N5 million payroll fraud which Idumange claimed to have uncovered which has been referred to the Police for investigation.

“Ordinarily, in line with established procedures, an investigative panel should have been instituted to look into the matter and come up with a report with which management would act.

“All these are expressly spelt out in the Public Service Rules; however, we are also requesting for a copy of the police report after their investigation,” Yemoleigha said.

People think life in Nigeria is nasty, brutish and short, with no-one willing to help the other. This story shared by a Facebook user proves otherwise. The Facebook user writes:

It will be recalled that 4 weeks ago a severely malnourished child belonging to a teenage mother was picked up by Dr Betta Edu at eight miles calabar where the child was waiting to die. News was placed on social media and other media platforms calling on well spirited Nigerians to support the child to stay alive and send the teenage mother who had finished only primary school, back to school.

3 weeks after in response to this call, Renounce Calabar top entrepreneur Mr Richard Akinaka has asked for the relocation of the child to a private hospital, promised to take care of the malnourished baby’s medical expenses at the Joebong skin and medical centre where he ordered that they be relocated to for proper medical attention. He also promised to grant scholarship to the mother to further her education to any level she wishes to attain. While assuring them that he will give 30,000 naira every month from his children’s savings as up keep for mother and child.

He thanked the DG SPHCDA and State Government for their care, support and prompt response to the needs of the dying child and mother while calling on members of society to always reach out to such numerous cases in the society.

Young miss Esther whose One year six month old baby suffered from malnutrition and is recovering from the ailment after several intervention from some well meaning Cross Riverians said amist tears that she could not believe her baby could live again. “For all of you that have done something to help us, God will bless you and return back to you many times. I really thank You Sir (Mr Richard Akinaka) and the DG Dr. Betta Edu. Now I can go back to school when I leave the hospital”

Responding in tears the teenage mother Esther thanked Mr Richard Akinaka for his kind gesture praying for God to replenish him and bless his family.

Earlier Speaking, DG CRSPHCDA, Dr Betta Edu said the wonder baby who is a baby of another “baby” ( a teenage mother who dropped out of primary school) was totally wasted, severely malnourished and waiting to die when we picked her up. According to her she was hospitalized and going through series of Lab investigations including chest xray, having medications and following some nutrition regiment build up, the baby is alive, strong and getting better.

I wish to sincerely thank Dr Ayi and the entire General Hospital calabar team, I thank Mr Richard Akinaka who has not only sent in support to keep this child alive, but has taken more steps to see that the mother returns to school. Barr Attah Ochinke, Sylvia Abaokporo, Vera Beshel, Eyo Deprince, nnenna Ikpeme, Ignatius oli, Doyin from USA and a few others who bothered to stop by and lend a helping hand at the initial stage, God bless you all.

“Finally, we are at the end of the tunnel….God bless Mr Richard Akinaka for this kind gesture, you can never go unrewarded!!!” -Dr Edu.

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, yesterday visited two local agro processing equipment manufacturers in Makurdi, with a pledge that the state government would support them to boost their efforts.

He said his administration would also collaborate with private sector investors with innovative ideas to enhance the economic growth of the state.

Governor Ortom spoke while inspecting some agricultural equipment produced by TK Engineers and Jahvinche Integrated Services.

He expressed delight that the equipment produced by the duo which include rice threshers and garri processing machines could compete favorably with those from advanced countries, even as they were produced under a challenging environment.

Governor Ortom commended the fabricators for their initiatives, which he said if supported would create jobs, opportunities and wealth and requested that they submit proposals detailing what they needed in order to sustain and expand their outfits.

He called on others with innovative ideas to come forward, adding that his administration was willing and ready to support them.

Earlier, the Chief executives of TK Engineers and Jahvinche Integrated Services, Engineers Terkura Dzomon and Vincent Onugwu, said inadequate funds were hampering their capacity to acquire better equipment that would enhance the production of more and cheaper equipment and appealed for government assistance.

It began from a radio programme, but it has gone much more than that, as a widow's in-law want to maltreat her in these tough times. A Facebook user and civil society activist, Osaro Edigin, shares the story to readers. He writes,

EDOCSO STOOD FOR AN OPPRESSED WIDOW:

This building was secured for a widow and her two children whom her late husband's family had determined to sell. They had already sold his shop without thinking how she would take care of the two boys the husband left behind.

Some of the late husband's brothers traveled all the way from the Eastern part of the country just to sell off their brother's properties and share the proceeds.

I want to appreciate Efe Osafomwan of Man Around Town of Independent Radio who draw the attention of Edo Civil Society Organisations to it and action was taken.

The law enforcement agents will soon apprehend those brothers that want to reap where they did not sow. This building belongs to the two sons he left behind not for any brother or sister.

We shall ensure that she is adequately protected from any harm.

NEVER AGAIN WILL ANY PERSON SUFFER UNDUE OPPRESSION IN EDO STATE. OPPRESSION, INTIMIDATION WILL BE FLUSHED OUT.

Rice is one of the staple foods in the country. Every year until recent restrictions, Nigeria spends billions of dollars importing the product. A Facebook user was incensed over this situation and reacted. Here is the post he shares, showing photos demonstrating Nigeria's capacity for food manufacture.

"This rice mill is situated at Kafin Hausa town, Jigawa state. The rice (DANMODI RICE) tastes delicious for cooking and for swallow (tuwo). Why do we waste our money buying imported rice while we can get the same quality or even better at our backyard?

Dollar is gaining strength against our Naira because of our insistence to import commodities including food stuffs.
