Thirteen Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors rose from a meeting at the Akwa Ibom State Governor's Lodge last night with a resolution that the national chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, should go. The meeting, which ended at about 9.55p.m., saw the PDP governors heading to the State House to make their views known to President Goodluck Jonathan. Though it is not known when Tukur would be shoved aside, THISDAY gathered that the meeting between the PDP governors and the president would set in motion machinery to elect a new national chairman from the North-east geo- political zone. Two states are said to likely produce the next national chairman. The states are Borno or Bauchi State. Though it is still not yet known how President Jonathan will respond to the demand of the PDP governors who are seen as the field commanders of the party in the states. The governors at the meeting were those of Akwa Ibom, Delta, Abia, Ebonyi, Kogi, Kebbi, Kaduna, Bauchi, Enugu, Cross River, Katsina, Plateau, acting Governor of Taraba State and the Deputy Governor of Niger State. Ernest Chinwo A mild drama played out Monday at Rumuigbo Community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State as broom-wielding youths nearly lynched the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in-charge of Special Area, Rumuodomaya, Mr. Allwell Akwuonu, who led a team of policemen to stop the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the area. It took the intervention of the Chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt, Chief Tony Okocha, to stop the incensed youths from pouncing on the policemen at the Rumuigbo Civic Hall. The Rumuigbo incident came just as youth, suspected to be members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stopped the inauguration of the APC at Okehi, headquarters of Etche Local Government Area. Trouble started at Rumuigbo when Akwuonu, a chief superintendent of police, came into the Rumuigbo Civic Hall venue of the rally organised by APC in Obio/Akpor Ward 12, saying that he had orders to prevent the rally from holding in the community. When the DPO failed to convince the organisers of the rally, led by former member of the House of Representatives, Chief Ike Chinwo, to stop the gathering, he left the venue. He however returned later with reinforcement to stop the event. His return seemed to have angered the crowd who pounced on him with their brooms. The intervention of Okocha, who pleaded with the supporters, however saved the DPO. On sensing danger, the policemen, who had come with the DPO in three Toyota Hilux vans, shot severally into the air to stop the APC supporters from advancing towards them. The shooting did not scare the partymen, but as soon as the DPO made his way into his vehicle, the policemen sped away from the venue. Addressing the APC supporters before the police interruption, Okocha, an indigene of Rumuigbo community, said no amount of intimidation by security agencies would stop the people of the state from identifying with Amaechi. He stated that the governor had left the PDP for the APC and would never return to the party again. Meanwhile, at Obio/Akpor Local Government Council, the Head of Personnel Management (HPM), Mr. Azubuike Singer, has accused the Chairman, Prince Timothy Nsirim, of holding the council hostage following his refusal to accept the dissolution of the council by Amaechi. The state government had on November 28 announced the dissolution of the council, a decision already being resisted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and members of the dissolved council, led by the chairman, Nsirim. But Singer said yesterday while addressing journalists in Port Harcourt that Nsirim’s refusal to hand the council’s papers over to him as directed by Amaechi had stalled activities at the council secretariat as staff could not work and get paid. Appealing to the dissolved council to obey the law and rather challenge the state’s government’s decision in court, Singer warned people doing business in the council area to desist from transacting with the dissolved council, even as he warned against entertaining tax collectors as the council had not sent anybody out to demand for tax and levy payments. He said, “I’ve come to state here clearly that the people of Obio/Akpor local government area, banks and private business organisations operating in the area should not regard or honour any document inform of letter or announcement signed by Hon Timothy Nsirim and in view of this, I want to advise that all doing business in the area; banks and others should not honour any individual who has come in the name of revenue collection because I understand that some people are going about impounding people’s vehicles, seizing properties in the name of revenue collection. “Please I want to use this opportunity to warn that since the dissolution council has not authorised any person to collect revenue on her behalf. We are therefore saying that all those who have not paid their levies and taxes for the year 2013 should go straight to the designated banks and pay their revenues, not to any individual. The council is dissolved and is dissolved. “I therefore use this medium again to appeal to all aggrieved persons, in the course of this dissolution should go to the court and present their matters and allow the civil service to continue rather than disorganising the civil service. Workers are scattered here and there, they are not allowed to do their works. This is not proper, civil service has to go on; government’s job must go on. People depend on what they are paid at the end of the month, there are a lot of dependants, if the salary is not paid it is not proper. So I want to advise workers also to go about their normal duties as arrangement to pay their salaries is being made. “You can see that here with me are directors of the council, Nsirim is holding the council hostage and the best I will advise for him is to give way so that the civil work of the council can continue. He should go to court and address his matter.” Source: Thisday |

SUPER Eagles’ Goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, who last conceded in the league on September 15, was in imperious form yet again as he helped his side claim all three points that consolidated their place in the upper rungs of the table. The 31-year-old former Enyimba goalkeeper was called to duty three times by Tolouse’s attackers and came out with top marks to help his side to an important win that means Lille continue to stay in second place, with 30 points from 14 matches. Enyeama’s good run also means he now needs to keep two more clean sheets in the league to claim the record of going the longest number of minutes without conceding in the French top flight. PSG’s Italian goalkeeper, Salvatore Sirigu currently holds the record having gone 948 minutes without conceding in Ligue 1 between November 17, 2012 and February 8, 2013. Enyeama has now gone 855 minutes without conceding. The biggest threat to him breaking that record is expected to come at the Grand Stade Lille Métropole (Villeneuve d’Ascq) on December 3 when Lille hosts Olympic Marseille on match day 16. Remarkably, Enyeama does not need to go the entire 90 minutes against Olympic Marseille without conceding to break the record. If he does not concede inside the first four minutes of the encounter against the country’s best supported club, he will go into the history books for all the right reasons. The Super Eagles stand in keeper however told supersport.com recently that he is not thinking about the record. “I don’t keep statistics. I am surprised you just read out the facts for me. Honestly, I wasn’t even aware because I just go out to play football,” he said. Enyeama made his debut for Nigeria in 2002 and has since gone on to make appearances for the Super Eagles. Meanwhile, the Super Eagles’ skipper believes the class of Mikel Obi, Victor Moses and Emmanuel Emenike will propel Nigeria to glory at the Brazil 2014 World Cup. The African champions have qualified for their fifth World Cup and Enyeama has picked several players, led by Chelsea midfielder, Mikel, to get the team to shine in Brazil next year. “I pray that Mikel Obi will be in his best shape and (Victor) Moses plus Emenike will all be in their true elements by the time the World Cup will start in Brazil,” Enyeama told Sporting Life in an interview. “These three men are those that we are banking on because if they are in top shape, they will help us to get a rhythm and also they make things happen. They make the difference in important matches.” Emenike has been the Eagles reliable goals machine, while Mikel and Moses have brought their quality to bear on the team since Nigeria won a third AFCON in South Africa in February. The Lille goalkeeper also singled out up and coming Lazio youngster, Ogenyi Onazi, who has been on superb form lately. “Onazi is also coming up greatly,” remarked the stand-in Eagles skipper, who has also been on great form for title-chasing Lille in the French Ligue 1 this season. “I pray that they all stay injury-free and are in top shape ahead of the World Cup.” Brazil 2014 will be Enyeama’s third World Cup after he took his chance at the 2002 World Cup group game against England. Bouyed by what it considered as substantial evidence of irregularity at the Anambra State’s governorship election of November 16, 2013, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Sunday urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cancel the exercise. In a statement in Lagos Sunday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the APC said it “has provided incontrovertible and more than substantial evidence to show that what took place on November 16 is a parody of election. “What other evidence can be more substantial than the fact that INEC, in conducting the election, failed to comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act? What other evidence can be more compelling than the INEC chairman’s admission of compromise by a top official of the commission? “If Jega’s statement that the election fell short of what the commission had expected and prepared for, what else could be more substantial?” According to the APC, Idemili North Local Council where an INEC official was said to have been compromised, has over 173,000 registered voters and is Ngige’s stronghold, having scored over 80 per cent of all votes cast there in his senatorial election. It also contended that the use of Nnamdi Azikiwe University students as presiding officers, instead of trained ad-hoc members of staff, violated INEC guidelines, just as the use of the university members of staff as supervising presiding officers because the APGA running mate was until his nomination a professor in the same institution. Similarly, the Accord Party (AP) said yesterday that the electoral umpire compromised its position on a free and fair election in the state, adding that it would go to court if INEC continued with its plan for a supplementary election. According to a statement yesterday by its National Secretary, Samson Isibor, the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Benin City at the weekend was dismayed that INEC could “renege on its avowed responsibility to conduct a transparent poll.” Meanwhile, the member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Victor Afam Ogene, has explained the low voters’ turnout during the poll, attributing it partly to last year’s flood disaster, which he said, devastated all the riverine areas of the state. Ogene, who is the Deputy Chairman of House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, contended that many registered voters in the riverine areas, especially in Anambra East and West, Ayamelum, Ogbaru, and Onitsha North and South local councils lost their voter’s cards to the flood and were thus unable to vote during the election. According to him, the devastation made many eligible voters lose their cards. To that end, he faulted the allegation by some contestants that their supporters were disenfranchised. The lawmaker further described their call for the conduct of a fresh election as “diversionary and unnecessary.” Ogene maintained that low voters’ turnout could not be a reason for an outright cancellation of the poll because, “in the two most recent state elections in Edo and Ondo in 2012, the turnout were 40 per cent in Edo and 38 per cent in Ondo. (Out of a total registered voters of 1,555,766 in Edo, only 630,099 voted, while in Ondo, 624,659 voters participated, out of 1,638,956 registered voters). http://www.theguardianmobile.com/readNewsItem1.php?nid=19779 |

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party may not be over soon as the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Bamanga Tukur, refused to see the Chairman of the party's National Convention, Prof. Jerry Gana, and the Secretary, Senator Ike Ekweremdu, on Wednesday. The two men had gone to the residence of Tukur, located at Wuse 2, to brief him on the activities of the committee concerning the convention, which date has not been fixed. Investigations by our correspondent showed that both men were at the residence of Tukur as early as 9.30am in the morning, but Tukur refused to see them. When the two men arrived, an aide of Tukur had informed them that the national chairman had travelled outside the Federal Capital Territory. Investigations further revealed that both Gana and Ekweremadu refused to go as they were said to have noticed the presence of security aides of Tukur. While Gana decided to sit with the security aides under a shade in front of Tukur's residence, Ekweremadu, who is also the Deputy President of the Senate, sat in his official car. The security men at the gate refused to open the gate for the two men. After waiting for about 20 minutes and the gate was still locked against them, they left around 10.05am, with a message with one of the security men at the entrance, asking him to inform the chairman of their visit. Investigations however showed that as soon as they left, members of the Interim National Working Committee of the party started arriving and were allowed inside. They were said to have held a meeting with Tukur and left his residence after their deliberation, which lasted for one hour. They left the expansive yard around 11.11am. Tukur also had a meeting with the party's new Director of Mobilisation and Organisarion, Mr. Uche Igwe. Tukur later left the residence for the airport on his way to Yola, Adamawa State, around 12pm. A member of the NWC, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said both Tukur and all the NWC members were not happy with the decision of Gana to relocate the workings of the committee to a private residence. "This was why they came. They thought that they could just bypass us and do everything without us," the source added. Tukur in his reaction, said he was not at home when the two men came to his residence. Apart from this, he said there was a standing instruction with his security men not to allow anyone into his compound whenever he was not around. http://mobile.punchng.com/output.php?link=http://www.punchng.com/news/pdp-crisis-tukur-snubs-gana-ekweremadu/ |
A Lagos High Court in Ikeja on Thursday sentenced a stockbroker, Ayoola Coker, to 30 years imprisonment for stealing N17.5m belonging to his clients. In his judgment, Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo, sentenced the 37-year-old man to two years for each of the 15 counts of stealing, issuance of dud cheque, forgery and uttering preferred against him. However, Coker has only few months to spend behind bars as the judge ordered that the sentences should run concurrently starting from December 1, 2011, since he had been on remand. The judge convicted Coker after he pleaded guilty to all the charges, which were preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. He noted that Coker had made efforts to restitute the victims, Mr Saheed Gbadamosi and his son, Taiwo. According to the judge, Coker had transferred the title deed of his landed property at Idimu, Lagos, worth N8m and a car valued N1m to the victims. Onigbanjo said, "He was arraigned earlier on June 6, 2011 and had pleaded not guilty. "The voluntary changing of his plea to a guilty plea has demonstrated sufficient remorse as to warrant the leniency of the charge," Onigbanjo said. The convict, was said to have sometime in 2010, fraudulently sold numerous shares worth N17.5m which were kept in his custody by his clients. http://mobile.punchng.com/output.php?link=http://www.punchng.com/metro/stockbroker-jailed-30-years-for-stealing-clients-n17-5m/ |

According to Sky News, Alan John Miller, or AJ as he prefers to be known, runs a religious movement known as the Divine Truth from his home near the small town of Kingaroy in the state of Queensland. Miller also claims that his Australian partner (in the picture) is Mary Magdalene and she was present at the crucifixion. He recalled raising his friend, Lazarus from the dead.
