musicwriter: Why not!. If Igbo is made compulsory in schools, students would just follow up naturally. The problem lie not in what people would say, but our intimidated educationists and scholars.
By the way, before our unfortunate contact with white people, we acquired knowledge using Igbo language. Or, did knowledge acquisition begin in Igboland when we met white people?
I'm talking about reconstructing ourselves and you're telling me people wouldn't like it. For your information, Mozambique, Zambia, and Gambia are already implementing policies to ban English from their schools. They want to go back learning naturally in their native languages as it should be. That's the right thing to do!
We had a life before we met white people. Ban English? That would be disastrous to them. Chinese people are killing themselves to learn English/French ans one Knucklehead wants to throw that away? What I advocate for is for the local language be the language of instruction in PRIMARY school, since then, their brains are still soft and they can learn, (they should have English teachers too, but the language of instruction should be in the local language, then at secondary and university level, then it can be English, that way, a child will be able to read and write in BOTH English and an African Language. We need to be strategic |

This reminds me of my 200level GST course, (Nigeria people and culture) Thou the lecturer is an Igbo man but he is not biased, he agreed that the igbos are decentralized and when it comes to respect for their elders they are in no way to be compared to the two other major tribes (,Yoruba and Hausa).
I am not against Igbo's and their way of life but it is the truth, I have a lot of Igbo friends. Okay, I see.... But Igbo people respect their elders too, just that the mode/way is different. You don't have to postrate to show respect |

can't stop laughing , but you are right most of the Igbo's dont have respect when it comes to greeting . And what is your definition of "respect" ? Oh I get it, postrating or kneeling down? Now listen, cultures are different, we Igbos don't do it as much, that's true, but don't use your cultural practices as a basis to judge other cultures, because not everybody see things the same way with you, which btw, is not a crime because variety is the spice of life. Key point: Don't use your culture as a basis to judge other cultures, because worldwide, no culture is inferior |

Braden102: Most Nigerians are also ignorant about their own country and other countries. Most people only care about their country. You think a Swedish or Iranian cares about what part of Africa Nigeria is located? The United states is 11 times larger than Nigeria, and there's little need to travel outside of north america . Most people around the world may know or hear more about the United states because America is the world power. There are more gays and more crime in Nigeria than the US. how many Nigerians know that New York time is different from Chicago and Los Angeles Time ? How many Nigerians know that it doesn't snow in Florida? How many Nigerians have ever heard about the northern lights or white sand desert? You see, don't think you're that smart .There are some things you might know ,and there are some you might not know . Don't come across as an idiot in the process of trying to be smart . If nigerians are so smart and exposed ,why is Nigeria such a dirty third world shiithole ? Most Nigerians in the south think that everyone in the northern Nigeria are Hausa, while most of the northern Nigerians think everyone in the south are Igbo. remove the log from your own eyes first . mistarsam: Let me answer your question with these narrative which happened three weeks ago in my ppa:
In this current Batch A16, three male corpers were posted to my ppa. One is a Northerner, the second a Yoruba Muslim while I am a Christian. We (my Yoruba Muslim fellow corps member and I) had a Hausa Muslim friend (emphasis on Hausa Muslim/Yoruba Muslim mine and deliberate) in that community. We were gisting one evening when my Corper guy asked him that why is it that the first question an Hausa babe usually asks her non-Hausa speaking 'toaster' is 'ARE YOU A MUSLIM?' (In case you are wondering how we got the 'LIVER' to 'toast' an Hausa babe in a 99.99% Muslim populated community, the answer is not too far fetched. We happen to be habitual night crawlers and we know beyond reasonable doubt that their girls are something else in the night).
In response to our question, he drew our attention to several things.
1. He asked my Yoruba Muslim Corper guy if he hadn't been observing the reactions of the locals anytime he goes to THEIR mosque to pray. He said that some of the locals were always confused that why will a CHRISTIAN WORSHIP WITH THEM IN THE MOSQUE. That my Corper guy has been tagged MUSLIMIYAH which ACCORDING TO HIM means a CHRISTIAN WHO PRETENDS TO BE A MUSLIM. He continued by saying that A CORE MUSLIM HAUSA NORTHERNER DOES NOT HOLD IN HIGH REGARDS, ANY OTHER MUSLIM FROM ANY OTHER PART OF THE COUNTRY REGARDLESS OF YOUR RELIGIOUS/MORAL UPRIGHTNESS NOT TO TALK OF CHRISTIANS. 2. There was a girl my Corper guy asked our Hausa friend to speak to on his behalf. My Corper guy was getting along with the babe with the little Hausa he understood. The girl all of a sudden began to distance herself. In the course of our discussion, our Hausa guy now drew my Corper guy's attention to that incident. He said the girl confronted him that why will he JOIN HER TO A CHRISTIAN GUY. He said all his efforts to make her see that my Corper guy was a MUSLIM but just happened (UNFORTUNATELY... Lol) to come from the SOUTHWEST was in vain.
I HOPE YOU CAN DO YOUR DEDUCTIONS. I REST MY CASE!
N.B: I STAND TO GAIN NOTHING FROM BADMOUTHING ANY RELIGION, TRIBE OR SECTION OF THE COUNTRY. I SAY IT AS IT IS. NO SUGAR COATING, NO FALSE ALARMS.
GRACIAS.

Travel › Re: 12 Things Every Nigerian That Came Back With A Foreign Accent Will Get by Ugosample(m): 1:18am On Sep 12, 2016 |
airsaylongcon: OK let's attack issues and not personalities. First of all your example of Yoruba speaking igbo people is not a generalisation. Most western (Nigeria's west) igbos speak igbo that a village raised igbo will scorn at. Most of them find out that the igbo they speak is far from what is spoken in the east. Most of them are sent to universities in the East and find out that people there "laugh" at them because of how they speak. Lemme give u an example, I grew up in Warri and will easily say I speak warri pidgin. But when I hear locals speak (I left warri 18 years ago) I can understand what they speak but the locals can tell I am not "local" as I speak what they would consider an antiquated version of their pidgin. I use slang and words that aren't in common use anymore. My questioning of your assertion was that Chinese Americans can switch to flawless Mandarin without detection. This is not true.
I speak a bit of Cypriot Greek and the Cypriots I've met have been impressed. Even applauded. But they still can tell an accent.
And no I do not worship accents. I am only put off when people (Nigerian radio OAPs) talk with an acquired accent and try to make us believe that's how they started speaking English. Esther Ogun is a typical example (you might know her as Maupe Ogun on Channels TV)
And I believe only native speakers can judge if someone speaks with a proper accent. Most Nigerians insist that "Nigerian accent" spoken in American movies aren't a true reflection of the Naija accent. Most non Nigerians believe that it is a true reflection of Nigerian accent. Have you heard the British guy that that talked about Nigerians praying when a plane had issues. I though it was a good attempt at mimicking our accent but if I was blindfolded I would still tell that nobi Naija person dey talk
In other discussions Sierra Leone pidgin is gaddem very similar to Waffi pidgin Yes I see, you have a point too. Check out Boris Kodjoe on YouTube, he kinds of validate Craziebone's point. As for the OAPs, Marie Okan for beat fm na im tire me the most, that girl is sometimes inaudible. But tools got a good accent, same with Olisa Adibua. But OAPs can go for trainings to speak in near perfect accents (don't know whether accent coaching is trending in Nigeria tho) At the end of the day, Do you. If you want to sound like a village man, good for you, and if you want to sound "polished" good for you too. peace |

FriendChoice: If a Christian woman marries a Muslim man – the family of the husband, will not abuse or insult any of her Prophets – because in Islam, we believe in all the Prophets of the Jews and the Christians – what Prophets they believe in, we believe in. We both believe in Adam, in Noah, in David, in Moosa, in Isaa (May peace be upon them all). Because we believe in all of their Prophets… the lady, when she enters a Muslim family, she will not be ridiculed.
But the vice-versa – if a Muslim lady goes to a family of a Christian or a Jew… but natural, they do not believe in Prophet Muhammed (May peace be upon him), and she will be ridiculed. That is why, Islam gives permission for a Muslim man, to marry a girl from the Christian or Jews family
Hope I did not offend you 4 telling u d reason. Your reason does not offend me, not at all. But it has been a thought I could not comprehend at all. But in Yoruba land, Muslim girls marry Christian guys a lot. |

zorroeta: 1. Let me start wit Communication(language barrier), indeed most corpers have issues when they want to buy something, or to locate places. The Hausas are deeply engrossed in Hausa speaking and they are comfortable with it even in govt schls and orgnstns.
2. The peoples way of life in Kano cannot be even compared wit some northern states like kaduna, plateau, niger, - talkless of coming from d south where clubs, hotels, brothels, k**s**g in public/ hugging/partying, beer parlor, and joints are very common. Am sure u must heard of d HISBA board(whose sole objective is fighting against all sort of these immoralities). So u need 2 adapt.
3. Its true, intermarriages often occurs between a southerner and the hausas but majority are not wit their daughters(believe me, b4 it happens, a serious fight do occurs wit both parties coz of religious/cultural differences. Some parents even disown their daughters). And u know, Kano ar vry religous, A Muslim man is allowed to marry a Christian woman, but a Christian man is not permitted to marry a Muslim woman. Better u stay off! Why is a Muslim man allowed to marry a Christan but not the same with Muslim women? Is it a complex or something? That has been my orobkrn with these people, double standards. Only if things could be less volatile up north... |
