So excited about what's going on in the aviation industry in nigeria today lots of reforms and now we are about to witness the take off the 1st international airport in the SE.

When you get to the bridge you will cross it. Let enugu focus on getting people to fill the ethiopian airlines on each flight.once the route shows its potentials then all other things like consulate, highways/freeways and railways etc will be added unto it. dont put the cart before the horse. I strongly believe that our igbo brothers being major travellers will make this airport thrive.

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Akpabio, has restated his commitment to the actualisation of the Ibaka Deep Seaport project and expressed the hope that a substantial part of the project would be completed before he leaves office.

Chief Akpabio dropped the hint when the Managing Director of China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), Mr Shi Hong Bing led the management team of the firm to present an architectural design of the project to the Governor in Abuja.

The governor said he was elated about the Chinese firm’s interest in the maritime industry in Nigeria because, according to him, the Ibaka Deep Seaport represented the future of the maritime industry in Nigeria.

According to Chief Akpabio, “I see a future for Ibaka in the Gulf of Guinea. It will help to decongest existing ports in Nigeria and also make Nigeria attractive destination for shippers. It will become a major trans-shipment destination because of the depth of the water.

“It will also be of advantage to countries bordering Nigeria along the coastline. Akwa Ibom State has the largest and longest coastline in the country and we are glad that your company is interested in making use of these numerous advantages.”

The governor acknowledged the reception the Chinese government and CCECC gave to President Goodluck Jonathan during his recent visit to China and said he was delighted by the cooperation between the two countries.

Speaking, Mr. Bing thanked Chief Akpabio for the patronage and confidence he reposed in the company and promised continued commitment to standards in all its projects in the state.

He disclosed that the Speaker of the Chinese parliament would visit Nigeria from September 18 to 20 and said he looked forward to using the visit as a platform for signing a memorandum of understanding on the project to facilitate the sourcing of finance from financial institutions.

“The first phase of the project is estimated to cost about $3 billion so we need more investors to partner CCECC and Akwa Ibom State government to make the project a reality,” Bing. said.

The State Governor, His Excellency Chief Godswill Akpabio in Government House, Uyo while receiving a 10-man team of Architects, Engineers and Directors of Nozaria, a housing development company from Madrid, Spain, who came with a proposal to develop housing in the state, said this is the time for his administration to focus on housing in Akwa Ibom State.

This he said after the detailed presentation by the Project Manager, Carlos Orna, of Nozaria to the Executive Council on a 350 square meter estate development for 2, 3, 4, and 5 bedroom housing units with complimentary educational areas, green areas, facilities for water and solar power, open malls, and recreational areas. The estate project according to the project manager will be delivered based on their vast experience in housing and modern technology.

He said the estate will be developed full of facilities and to promote a friendly neighbourhood that everyone will like to live in. The streets will be spacious with lightings and pavements, with adequate provision for water supply, electricity, and sewage management. The housing development will pay serious attention to environmental concerns, particularly as it affects the Nigerian family.

He stated further that the most modern construction methods will be used so as to render a luxurious finish with marble floors and a lot of comfort. The project is to take one year. The company, Nozaria, also presented a proposal for upwards of 10 high rise 20-storey apartment buildings on the beachfront close to Le`Meridien for top flight executives which they plan to privately develop.

The Governor was elated at the coming of the company which he said was at the best time in the life of his administration. The governor stated that land has been acquired and efforts have been placed in top gear to deliver quality housing to citizens. After extensive discussions the governor stated that construction will commence in 2 weeks and that government will work hard with the company to come down on cost of the housing units for affordability of the Akwa Ibom citizen. The estates of 500 units each, according to the governor, will be delivered in each of the 3 senatorial districts in line with his position on the geographic spread of government projects.

The governor stated that rather than let the estate company take full ownership of the project, the government will partner with them on the 1,500 unit estates to the tune of 50% once the costing is reasonable and affordable. The governor welcomed the Spanish team and said the state is ready to go with them on the housing project. On the beach front project the governor said we have companies like ExxonMobil and they have thousands of staff, while other multinationals like Centrica is coming into the state to develop gas for the local market and will employ in thousands. Therefore the need for housing cannot be over emphasized. Though they are encouraged to develop the beach front as a private sector initiative the government will support with provision of roads, electricity and other amenities as the beachfront project will enhance the 5-star hotel (Le`Meridien) and the environs.

To kick-start the housing project the governor is setting up a team to be headed by the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Renewal, Barr. Emmanuel Enoidem. Consequently, the governor wants the Nozaria plan to be replicated in the 3 senatorial districts and has set a goal of commissioning the estates in December, 2010.

how is the work going @ the convention centre? Honestly i had expected the convention centre construction to be quicker since the project manager said that they were using hollow precast concrete slabs for the construction as the precast slabs + pillars were to be shipped from Abuja and Ibadan hence eliminating the in situ casting that takes much time. but the pace is kinda disappointing don't you think?

The Akwa Ibom State government has said it will reintroduce a vessel on the Oron- Calabar water route to curb frequent boat mishaps in the area. the Commissioner of Transport, Mr. Austin Mbeh, who said this in Uyo on Monday during a press cinference, explained that the State Government had entered into partnership agreement with a company with a view to procuring the vessel that would be used for Oron-Calabar water route.

Mr. Austin, stated that the measure would also reduce the distance for persons going to Calabar from Oron, Eket, Uruan, among others, in the State. He said that the State Government had also reached an agreement with a consulting firm to look at the prospect of removing MT Elope that sank into the Oron River, which could not be removed up to this moment.

In His words ” We have got a private company that is working on the possibility of getting the vessel out of the river as well as embarking on the drenching of the Oron-Calabar water route.”

He added that Government will soon look at other areas where introduction of vessels would also make sense

When the Akwa Ibom State Government embarked on the project , even the cynics would agree that the aim of providing employment to the teeming unemployed youths of Akwa Ibom State was in mind but all that seems was to be elusive now as the project manager of ITB (the Labanese handling the construction of Tropicana) Mr Eli Arassi runs the project site by short-changing the staff salary and sack workers without severance allowance.

Investigation reveals that the perpetuate this atrocity, Mr Arassi on assumption of duty as project Manager demanded for the constituent of the Union Executives that would speak on behalf of the workers and when then Union Executive were elected, the PM carried their loyalty by making permanent staff with jumbo while still subject the workers to slash pay of N1,800 instead of N5000 approved by The State Government for each worker.

According to reports, part of the dehumanizing treatment meted to the workers includes the incessant redundancy without any severance allowance and sometimes a token of N1,800 being a day pay is given to sacked staff without justifiable reason.

Amidst all these, reports reveals that the Union Executives have been compromised by the PM, keeps silence, refused to negotiate for the rights of the workers, thus causing the staff to embark on a peaceful demonstration at the site to demand for the sack of the ITB Project Manager, Mr. Arassi and the union Executives for incompetence.
