EmperorSeal: Lies, I have been using Irish spring soap for years now, I buy the pack which contains 3 for 450 naira at my neighbourhood any of the smaller retail shops around me, but when I got to shoprite, I went for 550 naira. It so much pissed me that I declined going to that place again.

gabbytabby: For me its not about Shoprite per say more about the business concept. Shoprite has its place and the market is not even close to being saturated. There are things I will never buy in the market and there are those I would never buy in Shoprite.

Having Shoprite has meant that I carry at least 30kg less luggage when the children are travelling with me so I am not complaining. They also provide building, manufacturing/production, retail etc jobs for the local community and contribute to local tax revenues.Its a good thing to have businesses like that.

The challenge is why are more and more indigenous entreprenuers not involved is this type of sucessful business idea. There is shortage of even local produce at reasonable price yet despite government initiatives a lot of indigenous people are not rising up to the challenge. We need to be prepared to get our hands dirty instead of this idea of sitting behind a desk and signing paper.

Idle hands kills the economy, bad work ethics, stealing, fraud are others that kills the ecomomy.

1) Provision of jobs thereby reducing unemployment
2) Provision of tourist centres
3) They pay tax to the govt
4) Provision of much needed goods all in one spot thereby reducing cost of shopping.
5) Their products are cheap
6) They act as a catalyst to our entrepreneurs thereby encouraging them to become better entrepreneurs.

NEGATIVES
1) They create unemployment by killing small businesses. This is the same reason small towns in America clamour against the presence of retail giants like Walmart.
2) They encourage poverty by tempting people to buy impetuously.
3) They break up relationships by causing our ladies to make excessive demands on our young men.

MY TAKE
Every capitalist country in the world clamours for direct foreign investment, and since Nigeria is a capitalist state then I think the presence of Shoprite should be supported. The positives of having shoprite in Nigeria outweighs the negatives.

thelonestranger: The problem with Shoprite though is high cost of items and long checkout time. It has the advantage of more variety over shops like Foodco.. You have a choice of a 2 - 15minute checkout at Foodco or a 30minute checkout at Shoprite.. Existing shops shouldn't lose sleep over arrival of Shoprite in Ibadan.

CyberG: The only thing that is BAD here is that I would prefer if this were a store chain owned by Nigerians doing business in Nigeria and in foreign countries! Foreign countries should not be allowed to make billions off our country! Dangote has tried! Adenuga has tried! They cannot do EVERYTHING! The Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company(CCECC) has pledged to work with the Akwa Ibom State government on the Ibaka Deep Seaport project.
CCECC Managing Director in Nigeria Mr Shi Hong Bing told Governor Godswill Akpabio in Abuja that the firm would ensure that the seaport becomes a reality.

Bing, who praised Akpabio for allowing the firm to construct some roads in the state, said it was involved in similar projects in other parts of Africa.
He acknowledged the infra-structural facilities in Akwa Ibom, urging Governor Akpabio to keep up the good work.

Governor Akpabio said it would be fantastic to collaborate with the firm in the construction of the seaport, adding that the committee on the project, which is on a road show, would meet with the company to work out the areas of cooperation.
Chief Akpabio, who described Akwa Ibom as “work in progress”, praised the company for the quality of work it has done in the state.

“CCECC and the government of Akwa Ibom State under my leadership have been good partners. And it is a partnership that has produced results.

“The first road contract that was awarded to your company was delivered in time complete with the best street lights and drainage in the country. And recently we signed a contract for the dualisation of Etinan-Eket road and more jobs are coming.

“It is not a function of lobbying for the job but that of quality, good pricing and record time delivery. We look forward to continuous partnership,” he said.

The governor reiterated that the seaport would promote commerce and complement the port in Lagos and also serve as a major transshipment point for the West African coast. He said the project would also provide employment for many.
