mens dept: Although the governor is not the greatest thing that's happened to this part of the world, the small that he's doing is near international standard, from library, to stadium, to airport. Most, if not all the governors are looting the peoples bank and leaving 1950's building around and calling it development.

No one says he is the greatest thing he is a human being with his faults.
what i am saying is that he is delivering visible the dividens of democracy to his state and will like so see same in other states of the federation.

Abagworo: I'll leave the 1st point on financial prudence as you said we have no accurate means of calculating that and it is not peculiar to Akwa-Ibom as well. The capital flight issue is a serious one both in Akwa-Ibom in particular and Nigeria in general.

I don't believe all the indigenous firms are not competent as you seem to have insinuated. In Rivers State LCC and MCC which are completely owned by Rivers indigenes residing in Rivers have done marvelously well and is part of the reason Rivers natives are getting money because the money stays back in Rivers State. RCC, Cetraco and Gitto are also working on various projects while the primary schools were strictly awarded to Rivers natives.

According to the state they have completed over 3000 inter ministerial projects which includes classroom blocks, primary health care centers, grading of rural roads,bore hole drilling transformer installation and asphalting local urban roads that are not major trunk roads. etc these are the contracts that are awarded to indigenous and political cronies in the state.

These projects are the ones that politicians in the state are stealing from. and as a nigerian you do know that if these was not the case the political cohesion that the gov. is enjoying at the moment would have eroded by now.

So my point is that the myth that Akwa Ibom state citizens are not benefiting from state contracts is a lie. the truth is the gov. is just not giving major contracts to companies that are ill equipped to handle them.

Akwa ibom is one of the few states in the federation to achieve 80% electrification coverage across the state with the provision of transformers. the reason you have not heard of these interministerial project/ direct labour that are handled by local/indegenous contractors is because the interministerial project is not given high profile as the governor refuses to commision the boreholes, classroom blocks rural electrification etc under that scheme such projects are rather delegated to commissioners Special Advisers and LGA chairmen for commisioning but trust me there are tons of such projects within the length and breadth of the state.

So my point is that the normal avenues for politicians and supporters of the gov. who usually masqurade as citizens empowerment in nigeria is still alive an well in Akwa ibom however in a different sphere.

Abagworo: It does. Lagos is like Nigeria's New York where most embassies and businesses have their head office. Our major international airport and seaport is also there. If I import goods, it must come through Lagos and if I want to buy cheaper products, I'll do that in Lagos.

During census, it is only those that have their houses in Lagos that will be counted as residents and not those staying there briefly for business transaction.

Visit a Bus park at any city within Nigeria and watch the Bus going to Lagos vs the one going to Akwa Ibom to compare

How come people are always fighting for Lagos but no one cares about Akwa Ibom

well my point was that most lagosians seems to assume that since there is a great number of people from other state that visit, reside or do bussiness in lagos that everyone form those states make their living from lagos.
my point was if about four million people were counted in akwa ibom during the census if even 1/8 of Akwa ibom population and pop. of other states was in lagos then the population of lagos should be way more than 9.1 million.
these supports your argument of lagos as more of a transitional state than a residential state. the lagos state government knows these as a fact. thats why they choose to run with the erroneous 20 million political pop. figure rather than the official one from the national population commision.
If even 1/10th population of all states in nigeria resided in lagos as it is erroneously percieved then it population should be about 20million as opposed to just being twice the population of akwa ibom state the 15th most populous atate.

Abagworo: I don't understand the basis of all these arguments. Akpabio has done well on roads and some other projects and it cannot be disputed.

The 1st criticism I have against him is that he receives much more than other States in Nigeria and his works are not commensurate with his enormous allocation.

The 2nd criticism is self-induced capital flight. Awarding all the contracts to Julius Berger means most of the money spent on the roads have left Akwa-Ibom to other States especially Lagos and Abuja.

The 3rd criticism is against rich Akwa-Ibomites in Lagos, PH and Abuja that have refused to come and invest at home despite the enabling environment created by Akpabio. Government cannot do everything.

Great critique. thats worth responding to: His work wether commensurate with allocation or not is not really what we are about cos there is no means of measurement other than personal or anecdotal evidience .There is no agency in nigeria that is currently capable of scientifically measuring or scoring public allocation/ policies at that level currently.

The only such institution that we nigerians grudgingly turn to for such measurement is the central bank of nigeria( CBN). and they gave him the award as the best gov. in infrastructural development last year 2012.
I personally do not trust the CBN as many nigerians are biased against them too.
Reason being that they a dogged when it comes to transparency of the national finances vis a vis collusion with NNPC and other Federal govt parastatal to rob the country dry. case in point oil subsidy scam.

So what nigerians are left with is only to look around and see what is on ground for them to benefit from. and in Akwa ibom in terms of infrastructure the gov has left things on ground for all who are unbiased to see and enjoy.

On your second point for capital flight, for those of us who were around when attah was governor, we remember very well when road construction contracts were given to indigenous of the state to arrest capital flight, we all know how that turned out.
We had major road construction in the state awarded to companies that were ill equipped for it, such that roads were built using wheel barrow. we are all aware of what happend in rivers state with indigenous company like bulletine that built flyovers thats collapsing in that state.

I support the use of these well experienced companies rather than the usual political/local companies no matter the cost. but u r welcome to disagree with me on that point.

For percieve capital in these case differently. A capital good is one that produces other goods if i remember my SS1 economics well.
If thats true then if we look at a well constructed road as capital infrastructure that will produce / facilitate trade,commerce, tourism etc for the state for a long time to come. as opposed to limited time if the roads were politically constructed as before.
which on both counts money will still be wasted .

In the short term i agree with you that Julius Berger, Setraco, Alcon,gitto CCEC etc are taking the money away, but thats not only form AKS to lagos, as you stated but from Nigeria to Germany, italy, lebanon and china where these company are headquartered and where senior mgt are from.
so these is a nigerian/African problem rather than a state problem, mainly due to lack of well qualified Nigerian indigenous construction companies as nigerian construction coy have not come of age. but the bright picture is that these companies have hired labour from the state no matter how lowly, that is positively impacting citzens of the state as they are helping build practical knowledge for the citizen of the state which no univerisity of polytecnic studies can replace.and also providing a means of livelihood job creation is important.

On your 3rd point that takes time and the state is going in the right direction linking the state with good road network , currently the state pursued the policy/ agenda of linking all the local govt. areas to the state capital uyo within 1hr drive, a policy they have achieved 85% completion and the remaining 15% is pending the completion of the states portion of the East west road,eket-etinan,eket - ibeno and the Ewang Etebi road that will link the Ibaka sea port that construction is in advanced stage.
once that completed the state will be and already is an attractive destination for industrialization.

Of course you are aware of the completion of the uquo gas processing plant whose basic job is to process gas for powering industries , and the state owns an independent power plant that is currently contributing 191MW of electricity to the national grid and mobil is also building a 500 MW plant in their base of operation in the state.
With this kind of foundation i honestly believe that the gov. is steering the state in the right direction.

According to the 2006 pop census of nigeria akwa ibom has a pop. of 4 million resident in its state while lagos has 9 million.

I weep every December when I come to Naija for christmans.
You see all these kids mostly from cross river and akwa ibom on articulated bedford lorries going back home for the holidays. They are packed into it like someone is transferring animals.
I always ask myself why?how bad can it for these 14yrs and below ,if they are willing to travel 100's of km to work ,thereby forgoing their future
Open your eyes.
