@EgbonBode

Thank you very much for making us believe on ourselves.

EgbonBode: Do not be worried about visa bulletin for Nigeria.

Please let nobody be discourage about the movement of the visa bulletin. My case number is about 18,000. Everybody that won will have opportunity of been interviewed. If you analyse the statistics at this link that westcodes gave us for last year 2013 the whole picture will be very clear. (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmbWzexdyvIldEs1d3VWWnJoV1BZSTF0R0JGeVRSTFE&usp=drive_web#gid=7 DV cases judged in 2013, it's interesting.)

Note this: In Nigeria case for 2013 only 18 case numbers were greater than 20,000. All the other African country except few like Egypt and Congo are well distributed from 0 to about 100,000. What is happening in our own case this year is that almost everybody that won in Nigeria are having their case number less that 20,000. They are distributing the visa bulletin for Nigeria based on this. They already have rough figure of the number of people they are going to interview in Nigeria and they have known the number of people to be invited each month.

If your case number is high continue to prepare. Find out what you can do in US in terms of career and prepare for it. You will surely be interviewed before the end of September. If you look at the case of 2013 there is no body from Nigeria (based on the statistics in the link) with case number 19xxx that was interviewed earlier than August. Everybody in 19xxx in Lagos were interviewed in August and September.

Our high case number will be to our advantage based on the way this forum is helping with information. Those that will go to US early will be able to help us with information on how to Travel, settle and find jobs and career.

Thank you Lord Jesus for making the Bulletin to be slow so that we all prepare adequately so as to have no excuse.

And guys also know that is not how Well you prepare but by God that showeth mercy, but on your on side note this "Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance".

If I should say this we didn't go there to select ourselves, neither it was by our accuracy that made us selected but God Almighty that made us worthy for selection. So I personally myself am sorry for sounding otherwise on my other post. Am urging everyone to stay focused, never lose Hope or get worried cos Success is your name.

Use this space of time to improve on yourself and do the necessary things that can be of a big advantage for you when you get there and also gather hmmm... of course you know what I mean.

Time runs faster this days so just relax and pray before you know it you are there.

Peace!

Tips on Passing a Road Test

Some of you may think a road test can be very complex and frustrating. However, there are some tips on how you can pass a road test, or at least get a good score.

Show signals for all turns. Whether it's going forward or backward.
Keep speeds at the posted speed limits. There is no fault for going a couple of miles over the limit.
Take your time when going parallel parking, hill parking, or three-point turns. Examiners do not penalize you for time, as long as you observe the road carefully.
When doing a three-point turn going backwards, look both ways first before you begin to back up.
Use the parking brake when parking. When parking on a hill, use the Neutral setting and steer to the left with a curb going up, or right for a curb doing down or a hill without a curb.
If you see an approaching red light or stop sign, be prepared to brake gently to begin slowing down. Smooth stops count in the road test.
When making a sharp turn up ahead, be prepared to slow down, make the turn and resume your normal speed.
When turning, have your hand opposite to which direction you are turning at the top of the wheel. When beginning to turn, look into the turn and turn the wheel to that direction and let the steering wheel slide back to its original straight position.
When signalling, flick up for right turns and down for left turns. Just think of the word "upright".
When parallel parking, make sure you are about a meter apart from your car and the car parked at the right side of the road. Put the control stick to R and signal right. Steer fast to the right and once you can't steer right no more, turn the wheel right away all they way to the left quickly, and recover the wheel when the car is aligned with the parked car. Make sure you look back so you do not hit the curb.
For lane changing, make sure you check the rear view mirror and your blind spot as you begin signalling. If there are no cars, you can switch lanes safely. When driving from the right lane to the left lane for more than two lanes, keep the signal on til you approach the selected lane and then cancel the signal light.
When turning left, to a road with two lanes, make your turn, start on the passing lane and if the right lane is safe, signal right and move to the right lane.
Watch for any pedestrians when taking the road test. They have the right of way most of the time and drivers should watch them very carefully.
When parked on the side of the road before driving off, check mirror, begin your signal and check your blind spot. Remember to take your time as you see cars or other vehicles are passing by. Once there's an opening, it is safe to drive away. If you drive off behind a parked car, steer fast to the left and a little to the right and recover the wheel and you resume picking up normal speed.
When the light turns green, or if you get a green arrow when turning, make sure that the road is clear and there are no cars or pedestrians crossing your path, then proceed with care.
Remember to expect the unexpected, so when you're driving, please remember to be watchful and alert and all times.
Try to get at least 2,000 km of driving distance before taking a road test. There are no guarantees on passing, but getting this much practice of driving distance is a good amount to get good driving experience.
If in the event you fail your road test. Contact your driving instructor right away and show the instructor the copy of your failed test. Instructors are there to help you find what mistakes you've made and how you can pass the test with the correct procedures. Remember, all mistakes in driving can be correctable. And don't forget to recreate your road test to the instructor, to get their second opinion on if you should take the road test again, or simply keep practicing. Instructors and examiners are encouraged not to suggest giving up driving to drivers.
You might have failed the test because you have either had not enough practice in driving, or no one who is qualified enough to be a legal passenger while you drive, as first level class drivers are prohibited to drive alone, or perhaps you don't have a car for your own to drive in, accompanied with a friend to assist you, if they meet the qualifications.
Remember that giving up driving is an option, but not always the easy answer for driving poorly. Just because you failed a test, does not necessarily mean that your driving was too dangerous. Examiners do not fail drivers for the fun of it, and they don't have to at all. They fail drivers to make sure our roads are 100% safe for those who use the roads. The province of Ontario has the safest roads in North America and other U.S. states and Canadian provinces are opting to follow suit with Ontario's rules of the road to keep other roads safer too using Graduated Licensing.
Some good places to drive are either in parking lots or private communities. They are not government runned roads, so those roads are excellent roads to use when practicing on your driving skills.
If your license expires, you cannot drive on public roads and highways. If you wish to drive again and you have not yet become a fully licensed driver, you must go to a driver licensing office and requalify for the same level before you can take the road test again. There isn't a mandatory waiting period if your license has expired for no longer than 3 years if you are not a fully licensed driver. Remember to book the road test date at least 2 weeks in advance. If your non-fully license expired for more than 3 years, or if you violate the restrictions on your license 3 times, you'd have to start from scratch and take the mandatory 1½ year waiting period (1 year if you take an MTO approved driver's education course) before taking a road test.

Giving up driving because you failed miserably in your road test?
There are advantages to giving up driving.

Driving can be stressful and dangerous. If you have trouble checking over your shoulder or seeing at night or in poor weather, or not manuvering the vehicle properly, you may be putting yourself and others at risk. You may decide it's time to give up your driver's licence and begin using alternatives such as public transit, taxis and riding with friends and family, or maybe even riding a bicycle.
You no longer have the responsibility of driving. Why not sit back and relax as a passenger?
You save money.

Hello everyone,

The year 2013 is finally winding down in some hours, take a little time to ponder about God's blessings in your life in 2013 and you will definitely have a reason to thank God cos He has been so good to us.

At least if not for any other thing, but for the making us to be alive. So deserves to be glorified.

At this moment I'll like to say that high case number or not high case number, we will all make it.

I want to strongly give this piece of advice to people like me with high case number not to worry cos 2014 is coming with good tidings we will surely smile.

Remember not to be desperate, anxious or bordered about how it will happen, but be relaxed and prepared with prayer cos He makes all things beautiful in His time. Let’s be prayerfully and patiently waiting for God’s time cos that’s the best choice.

And most especially I want to say that the Almighty God shall see us through and make put smiles in every of our faces and also 2014 and we shall all encounter FAVOUR and ALL ROUND SUCCESS in our lives.

Happy 2014 in Advance!!!

Another reasonable idea.

Please, let's not be in a rush over creating the forum that will be scanty cos the name will determine the growth and how contributing it will be, and moreover we don't want a scanty forum. Let's consider things that will not make it limited to a particular set of people considering the topic, cos some people will vanish, disappear after their preparation based on the topic.

Let's all take a little time to consider/compare topics, cos it seems the former suggested topic is centered on "Preparation".

For me, I rather prefer this "Starting Life Afresh Over in the US as a New Migrant" to the former suggested topic.

Just my humble suggestion.

Pipsland78:
[b] I have only two things to say about this:
1) Naming it "Preparation for Migration..." makes it sound only limited to the things we need to know and do before relocating to the US. I think it should be broader than that; why dont we make it more encompassing by naming it such that it entails how to start life over as a new migrant in the US. Starting life all over as a new migrant in the States should be the main concern at this point.

2) Again the proposed title suggests the thread is meant only for those with Diversity visa, I think the title should suggest the thread is meant for and caters for all new migrants to the US regardless of the type of visa. So I think the word "diversity" should not be included.

In the light of these, I would like to suggest "Starting Life in the US" or "Starting Life Anew/Afresh/Over in the US as a New Migrant" as the title of the new thread.

The new thread should deal with such issues as:
1) What to travel with (food, clothing, money, etc).
2) How to present oneself at the POE.
3) How to relate with one's host and what to expect from one's host. Some posters suggested splitting the bills with the host and bringing them foodstuff from Nigeria in order to endear them.
4) How to secure the green card in the US.
5) How to obtain the SSN.
6) How to get the driving licence.
7) How to obtain the national and state ID cards.
cool How to write an American CV ( I understand the US format is different from the Nigerian format).
9) How to hunt for jobs.
10) How to start a business in the US (I'm particularly interested in this as Igbo boy concern #winks#).
11) What kinda sch (private or public) and how to enrol in schools both for adults and for children.
12) How to apply for different benefits such as health insurance, loans, grants, scholarships, etc.

The list is endless and in order not to derail this thread, we need a separate thread to deal with these issues.

Just my humble opinion.

exteababa:
1. i will advice u not to carry any food at all, cos of immigration checks, not only at lagos but at your point of entry, most white folks dont know anything about our african food, and i bet u dont want any wahala....and most of these foods are here in african stores. there garri, dried fish, poundo, anytn u want. save yourself of immigration trouble and heavy luggage .
2. its winter already and its very cold, so get your boot, winter jacket, head warmer as jjc u can get gloves too cos u dont want to get sick atall, medical bills here is just too high. get thick long socks too. ALSO expect cold in your aircraft
3. career in USA, number 1 is any course thats medical 2. IT courses 3. Engineering, then others follow..........
4. driving procedure, i you have naija DL go with it, it may save you some money and test. if not your host will direct you to a DDS office where u will get your manual free, before you can do a road test u will need your SSN and state ID ( requirements vary from state to state) and immigration documents. you will do a computer test first then if u pass u will do a road test.
5. my dad is my host so am at home. but 1 thing about hosts is, here in USA, everybody bears his/her cross. so over dependence on a host can lead to 'throw out'. you can assist in paying some lil bills such as water, cable, electricity........etc, based on your capacity. but be smart, the more money u put down the more you host may depend on you too.
6.flight booking. i did direct flight with delta airlines and it was just smooth. remember to keep your brown envelop in u hand luggage, bring it out at your point of entry so they can know your 'special immigrant' wink and give you due service
last advice. be ready to come to USA only when u are ready, i.e be ready to study immediately you land or be ready to work, no room for 'iranu'
WELCOME TO AMERICA!

I Love this.
NICE INFO. BRO

@Obatide:

You've said it and I am in support. It will not be that because 2013 DV thread didn't bring a nice idea like this doesn't mean we can't accomplish it.

Moreover, I think its a matured idea.

Let's go ahead and create a nice one.

Obatide: Greeting to Everybody
Thanks for the intelligent we have all displayed to analyze one of my posts, I duly appreciate both reactions, at least, it makes people to contribute and share their honest feeling, God bless us all.
In summary
1. It shows we are all one big family and need more information to succeed on this journey whilst keeping in touch as mates even in America.
2. Those who argued against creation of the new thread, said so not to abandon this current one while those in support share that too, but in addition, they considered rules guiding posting on Nl as well.
What prompts me to suggest a thread for ‘that’ purpose are:
I Observed that
1. Most of members who have had their visas approved are not that active on the thread unlike their activities before interview except very few of them. Do u notice that too?
2. This thread, ‘2014 Dv winners meet here’ deals with necessary process needed to have a successful interview
3. The thread; ‘Diversity visa immigrant? Welcome to America’ contains information we need after arriving America (I have been a regular poster there too, pls read). Hence, the stage between Successful approval of visa and Arrival in USA has not been comprehensively discussed like the two mentioned threads.
4. Most of 2013 people do try their best to assist on information there but work don’t give them that total freedom as in my personal chat with some of them to ensure they contribute regularly on 2014 thread, you will hear something like ‘You wouldn’t understand until you get here, because time is money here in America, but I do reply those who mailed me’ my concern is what happen to people who don’t have their mail but need such info too?
5. There is need to graduate the processes, which I believe will keep us together. Say
a. 2014 Dv winners meet here; process towards interview
b. Yet to be created thread; planning Migration after successful Interview
c. Diversity visa immigrant? Welcome to America; settling down in USA
My submission
1. I appeal and promise that this thread will not suffer as a result of graduated process
2. Having a graduated process will bond us together the more and give each segment a full sense of belonging
3. There will not be deviation from Subject matters of each thread; hence NL rule will be kept.
Conclusion
I have no inferior motive behind creation of the thread and don’t think NL pays those who have created topics before, so my motive is to enable us rub mind together on every stage of the process to avoid extortions and exploitations by Agents.
Therefore, I suggest that if anybody could edit this topic; ‘Preparation for Migration after Diversity visa Approval’ before it’s finally created, I will appreciate it.

Thanks and Wishing you all a Happy and Properous Year 2014!

Congrats to you Okeymen and your family for the great success, I celebrate with you.
Go and explore God's own country, I shall join you.

okeymen: Ok so this is how it goes... Obatide wakes me up at 4am to prepare, we dilly dally and lazy around till 6am before we leave the house and get there before 6.30am just as they started calling people so we we joined the queue and were last at the time and I said 'oh good so we can sit back and watch other interviews and have more to put on nairaland' but that was not to be. There was a couple that almost didn't show up with anything and said they just got a call to come that day. Well u know they can't be part of this forum so be grateful u are. We were just a few minutes on the line when the kids started complaining they wanted to sit down cos we had done so much the day before on quadbikes, jetskies and go karts (men Lag na fun place sha) so I cld not blame them. By the time we collected our blue tags to cross the road to the embassy proper, my son asked if we had finished cheesy.
The only person that wasn't so nice there was the lady we paid the $330 to. It was like nothing I had imagined. We were called to submit our documents and I saw the forms I had sent to KCC earlier right there. We ended up submitting 3 sets of passports instead of the 2 others are asked for but they returned all the ones we submitted to KCC. Please be sure u have up to 6 months validity before ur passport expires or u may have issues.
The kids and I were all asleep in the hall when our number showed...we didn't even know the interviews had started cos it turns out we were the first. When we did, we packed our stuff, carried the kids and staggered to window 16, where we met the famous pretty black american lady and after the oath and finger prints

Co: so u played the lottery urself

Me: bsc

Glory to God in the highest and thanks to my friends on nairaland who will commit their personal resources to ensure we all come out successful. So despite making a mistake as to when we got married (of course we corrected it at once) and looking sleepy and tired, God stood up for us!

You don't have to worry yourself on anything. The bulletin for Nigeria has been slow, but there is absolutely nothing to worry about cos its yours already, so don't be anxious or desperate cos you enough time to make your necessary preparations. Don't panic cos God is in control.
He makes all things beautiful in His time.

By the way, what is your CN?
