Foreign AffairsU.S. Government Claims Exclusive Ownership Over Its "Invention" Of Ebola by uken73(op):
I just came across a story of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control owning a patent on a particular strain of Ebola known as "EboBun." It's patent No. CA2741523A1 and it was awarded in 2010.

Here are extracts from the story.

Harvesting Ebola from victims to file patents

From the patent description on the EboBun virus, we know that the U.S. government:

1) Extracts Ebola viruses from patients.

2) Claims to have "invented" that virus.

3) Files for monopoly patent protection on the virus.

To understand why this is happening, you have to first understand what a patent really is and why it exists. A patent is a government-enforced monopoly that is exclusively granted to persons or organizations. It allows that person or organization to exclusively profit from the "invention" or deny others the ability to exploit the invention for their own profit.
U.S. Government claims exclusive ownership over its "invention" of Ebola

The "SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION" section of the patent document also clearly claims that the U.S. government is claiming "ownership" over all Ebola viruses that share as little as 70% similarity with the Ebola it "invented":

...invention relates to the isolated EboBun virus that morphologically and phylogenetically relates to known members filoviridae... In another aspect, the invention provides an isolated hEbola EboBun virus comprising a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence selected from the group consisting of: a) a nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 1; b) a nucleotide sequence that hybridizes to the sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 1 under stringent conditions; and c) a nucleotide sequence that has at least 70%, 75%, 80%, 85%, 90%, 95%, 96%, 97%, 98%, or 99% identity to the SEQ ID NO:

1. In another aspect, the invention provides the complete genomic sequence of the hEbola virus EboBun.
No medical reason to bring Ebola to the United States
This patent may help explain why Ebola victims are being transported to the United States and put under the medical authority of the CDC. These patients are carrying valuable intellectual property assets in the form of Ebola variants, and the Centers for Disease Control clearly desires to expand its patent portfolio by harvesting, studying and potentially patenting new strains or variants.

Dr. Bob Arnot, an infectious disease specialist who spent time on the ground in developing nations saving lives, recently told Judge Jeanine, "There is no medical reason to bring them here, especially when you see how well Dr. Bradley was." (2)

There is, however, an entirely different reason to bring Ebola patients to America: so they can be exploited for medical experiments, military bioweapons harvesting or intellectual property claims.

Surely, medical authorities at Emory University and the CDC are working hard to save the lives of the two patients who have been transported to the U.S. But they are also pursuing something else at the same time: an agenda of isolating, identifying and patenting infectious disease agents for reasons that we can only imagine.

VB 6 is good as a 1st language, but you should consider learning the latest version which is VB.NET. Most VB6 programmers found it challenging to port to .NET, so it would be wise to just learn .NET at once.

ProgrammingRe: Why Do Nigerians Adore Hardware But Despise Software and its Makers? by uken73(m): 1:13pm On Aug 05, 2014
Software that has value (solves problem that non other solves or solves it better) would sell. But since the major investment for software is mostly intellect/time (not necessarily cash in most cases) almost anyone can afford to make software. The result is that there are so many software out there doing the same thing or at least claiming to do the same thing. With so much competition, the prices come down. Some get so desperate and after so much frustration to sale (as there are so many options for the buyers), they begin to give off their software for free, just to prove that they are good at what they do hoping to build loyalty hoping to reap from the good will in the future. Everyday there is someone out there who reduces his price or even gives off for free with such hope. So that those who have built the good will and proven themselves would still be competing to sell against free software. You know what, free often has an edge. With this scenario especially in Nigeria where people mostly use pirated software they got for N150 or N200 people tend to think that is the real value of software. But they know that anyone selling a new Samsung S5 for N30,000 must be a thief.

So in the end, it would need your software to have a serious edge over others by being significantly better and good customer support for you to have a break.

The truth is, if you are good at what you do, it's only a matter of time, you will make it. Others are making it. For instance my coy has a software product that is competing against so many others in the field. But more than half of our existing clients are those who abandoned another product for ours and they are paying even higher than the one they abandoned.

Software pays if you are good and you are solving a problem that bothers many. The more the number affected by the problem and the more the challenge the problem poses, the better the chance of selling a good solution for the problem.

nedu2000: ur dad really tried, but to be sincere lemme wash a lil' dirty linen in public, the parents are to the largest degree response!!the dad is hated by the rest of household for being a womaniser, the wife is so lazy that when he was schooling in onitsha she all gave reasons why she doesn't 'ave time to attend her own son's open day,by the time he was thrown out this housewife never set foot into her child's school twas always the dad!!,when she came to collect the child after the latest setback,my mum really blasted her for her nonchalant attitude in terms of the boy's education. So to a larger degree, its the parents. But after an extended family meeting both parents 'ave decided to turn a new leaf in terms of focusing on d boys academics & future but I hope its not too late,he's 16
It may be more difficult now, but I won't say it's too late. One just needs to be careful with the approach as I mentioned earlier. Both parents decision to turn a new leaf is the 1st step. Next is to talk to the child. Likely the child is displeased with his academic performance but must have given up. He needs to be encouraged and made to understand that it's not too late. All parties should read the book "Gifted Hands" and review together. If the boy finds it difficult to read it, he can be made to watch the video version (not sure he has as much details as the book as I couldn't be patient to watch it having already read the book). Prayers can also be of help. With God all things are possible.

If the governor wants the current panel to continue, it must be he is sure of a favourable outcome. I had been wondering if the constitution gave power to the CJ to disband the panel as requested by the law makers. Their only option would be to go to court to prove the how the panel constituted by the CJ did not meet the expectations of section 188(5) of the constitution. Impeachment prolonged.

nedu2000: I know most parents talk about how their kids finish 1st in class then who's the child that finishes last!!
My uncle's 16-yr-old child is such a person,he's dad bribed his way into secondary after he failed common entrance, after repeating JS1 and JS 2 twice, his dad was called in by his school principal(govt school) to come and carry away his ward!!My uncle not knowing what to do,send my cousin down to Lagos to live with us and join my little brother in his school(they are both age-mates but my brother is in SS3).
In Lagos,he couldn't pass the qualifying exam to my broher's school so we had to make do with one of those secondary schools that don't arrange such exams. In school, the results didn't change 22nd/24 students after 3 attempts in the same class?haba. He also possesses criminal tendencies as he forged his last term results,he doesn't write notes claiming he's a slow writer and its a natural liar. His parents are confused.
Surely there are parents who's wards aren't(weren't) doing well academically, what's the way out? sad
I was once such a student who was not doing well in my most early education years. In my Transition class I remember being locked up in class along with another student for not being able to come up with any English word that starts with the letter 'Y'. The other buy later repeated several classes and was known as the dumbest kid in school.

But to the shock of me and many others I got to be 12th in class in Primary 1 in the first term and 1st by 2nd and 3rd term. Primary 1 was the immediate class that followed Transition. Since then I'd been either 1st or 2nd. In JS1 I was 2nd in all 3 terms, but I began to be an average student and out of the 1st 10 positions from my JS2 when I got introduced by my parent to be friends with a non-serious cousin of mine. This was to help me stay in school (as I was mostly a loner and so bored of school). I picked up again when I changed school in my SS1 where I ended my SS3 as 2nd overall.

I never understood the sudden change in my academic performance in Primary 1 until I read the book "Gifted hands" by Dr Ben Carson. The author was the dumbest kid in class who became the best and later an acclaimed world best neurosurgeon. It was when I read how the mother of the Dr had prevented her two kids from playing, instead forced them to be going to read books in the library and provide reviews each day, then I recalled that my late father had done similar thing to us (with more focus on me, being that my only brother was doing well). I could remember how my father (a former maths teacher, then a banker) would have us locked in the house and given some homework to do on our own. I remember more of how he taught me how to study maths on my own using maths text book. He would make me learn to solve new maths problems on topics for the next term on my own and I must complete all the exercises that accompany the topics. He would show me how to solve the ones I couldn't solve when he comes back from work. It wasn't interesting at all as our friends would come to mock us through our house window. Each day we would study from about 8am that my parent leave for work till 12pm when my Aunt would come and unlock the door for us to join other kids to play. Mum (a teacher) would be back around 2pm and you have to go to bed around 3pm. My dad seriously frowned at playing football and till date I and my only brother don't play nor have interest in watching football.

In summary I would say such corrections are best at the early formative years of a child. That is when it is easiest to help a child develop the habits and attitude you want to see in them. It is best time to influence a child and get them to grow with that influence. This becomes increasingly difficult as the child grows older. With my experience I'm sure that a child can be influenced to improve in almost any area (academic or otherwise). But I'm not sure how effective such measures may be for a child who has gotten to his/her teens. The best way to know is to try but at this age you must be very careful of being overbearing on the child which can result in depression, attempt to run away from home and in worst case suicide attempt. A teenage is more intolerable of parents interference in their lives, so any efforts must be done with much caution and more especially with the consent of the child. I would seriously recommend the book "Gifted Hands" for the parent and the child. The child would see from there that his/her case is not hopeless and would likely be more willing and cooperative with the parent on the measures to be taken. He or she would understand very well that the parents are doing it for his/her own interest and would reduce the change of the child viewing it as punishment.

That's my submission. Wish you the best in this.

…Imo lawmakers vow to impeach Okorocha
…No such thing, says Owelle’s aide

Barely two weeks after the impeachment of Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako and the sack notice given to Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura a week ago, both of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), their colleague in Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha is being threatened to be removed by the state lawmakers.

In Al-Makura’s case, the House of Assembly has asked the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Suleiman U. Dikko to raise a seven-member panel to investigate alleged allegations of misconduct against him, he did that at the weekend.

In Imo State also at the weekend, there was tension as members of the Assembly vowed to commence impeachment proceedings against Owelle Okorocha for allegedly withholding their entitlements since he became governor in 2011.

A competent source told Daily Sun at the weekend that the state legislators who are scheduled to return on September 9 are spoiling for a showdown with Governor Okorocha if he fails to pay them the arrears of their entitlements of about N420million, The lawmakers said they would have no choice, but to commence Okorocha’s impeachment.

According to the source, the lawmakers held another meeting last Friday where they resolved to use any legal means including the threat of impeachment to force Governor Okorocha pay them.

“At the last meeting of the lawmakers last Friday, July 25, they resolved that they must use whatever legal means to collect their entitlements which Governor Okorocha has refused to pay them since he assumed office in 2011 in the name of Rescue Mission. Before this time, the legislators have made several appeals to the governor through the leadership of the House that lawmakers have to be paid their allowances and the alleged slashing of their salaries by the governor to fund his free education programme since 2011”.

Although, the Speaker, Hon. Benjamin Uwajimogu and his deputy, Donatus Ozoemena, were said not to be part of the alleged plan by the 24 out of the 26 lawmakers excluding Oguta constituency where election matter is still pending in court, the lawmakers were united in their resolve to impeach Okorocha.

They have also vowed not to accept any payment which is not cash and they are also determined to equally impeach the Speaker should he stand on their path.

“If the Speaker stands in the way, he is going to be bulldozed along with the governor, anything short of cash will not be acceptable” the source said.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Hon. Acho Ihim, has dismissed the alleged impeachment plot, describing it as baseless and malicious.

He, however, confirmed the disparity in the salary of the current lawmakers and their predecessors.

He said, “during the administration of Chief Ikedi Ohakim, the House took a loan and it was deducted monthly from the salaries of lawmakers, so when we came in, the Clerk of the House was changed and a new one who was not properly briefed about the loan repayment, started paying with the records he met on ground.

According to him, when it was discovered, we quickly wrote the governor, who promised to intervene and he has done that. For instance, we were paid normal salary in June. The governor is ready to pay, all he is asking for is a little time because the money is much. It is about N18 million per lawmaker. It is true that there could be agitation, but it has not amounted to impeaching anybody”.

Similarly, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, Senior Special Assistant (Media) to Okorocha, dismissed the allegation, saying the governor has a cordial relationship with members of the Assembly.

“How can it be true, there is no such thing, you can verify from the Assembly members, the state government has a good working relationship with them and I don’t think anybody is plotting any impeachment, for what, on a governor who is performing, it is not true my brother,” Onwuemeodo said.
