unicmarket: I would advise that you get quality batteries, just get a new set,
But better still check your current controller if you can add more panels to the exiting system, then change the battery alone.
You don’t need a new system, you may only need to upgrade your controller and batteries
Then you are fine , 2 batteries can run 350 load 24/7 with good power generation from your solar panels. What’s the name and detail of your solar charge controller? Let’s see if you can add more panels to it If you can add another 2 panels to it, you are fine, so as to get extra charging, takes care of losses, and get max charging experience for your batteries. Wasting money on a new seperate system is not ideal. |

omotoda: I am about to finally increase my battery bank and I need the input of more experienced folks here :
I have a 24volts system of 2 209ah batteries which serves perfectly during the day since itbus connected to 4 units of 260 watts panel.Public power is at an average of 12 hours a day spread between 5am-12noon and 7pm - 12midnight( the night portion isn't always guaranteed though) Most times I use gen at night between 7pm and 11pm if there is no power so as to ensure battery is charged for over night use.
My plan now is not to use gen at all.
Plan A
Increase my battery bank to 4 units of 200ah ,add additional/separate panels through a separate charge controller(available already) to increase charging capacity of the 4 units
Plan B Set up a separate inverter( also available) with 2 units of 200ah batteries strictly for night use.
Which do you expert think is best please? 2 questions 1. What is the size of your load? 2. How long ago did you get your current batteries? |

Hullabaloon: If it's laptop alone, best you buy a laptop power bank.
The one I bought from a seller here on Nairaland is 400,000 Mah. Powers both laptop and standing fan. It's pricey though. 120k.
You can get one that costs less with lower Mah Am sorry, but I doubt your battery bank is 400ah for that price. Just my honest opinion I think the ah they sold to you is way lower than that. By the way what is the back up time? |

I don't know why it is labelled a "30ah" charge, but it rarely get pass the 10A marks over my 24v setup when I tried to use it. I like to ask this boss, How many ah is each of your battery? And was it drained when you started charging it with the famicare? And again was your Inverter also charging the batteries at the same time? |

Casemiro: hi.
good day.
please what could cause solar wire to rust? could it be the wire isn't good or it's from the Solar panel?
a panel i bought, the follow come wire were rusted (kinda like dust, maybe burnt.
I changed the wire, and used this 3 in 1 wire, but it started rusting (burning?) gradually.
I don't know if you have idea what could be the problem Getting to know the track record of panels is necessary before buying, It’s obvious if it’s new, there is a bad system, or a manufacturers fault, many cheap panels out ther my later result in cables and cells quickly getting degraded. If it’s not burnt( because of any mistake), please call the attention of the seller, for replacement warranty, am sure it came with one. |

The most challenging thing on most people’s Inverter or solar journey is not getting reliable consultation on it. And some get engineers and after installation, the installers start hide and seek game.
Ask for quotes here and get free quote ASAP.
It’s either you get a reputable power partner or you go again to look for installers on the road just ready to make you another client and not create good partner in your power journey.
Let’s talk on whatsapp, free quote and Systematic advice on what next to do.

Any advice on this? Should he incorporate external charging? Thats huge battery bank. Ok It’s true you may put your battery at risk, since it never charges full, please get an external charger of about 12v, 60A this will help. Regards |

I think the next thing is a strong, budget-friendly battery.
Any suggestion on the type of battery to go for?
I have someone here who promised to sell a new gel 100ah battery to me for 36K. So getting two would be equal to 72K.
Is it better than getting a 220ah quanta amaron for example or the tubular battery pitched to me here.
I just don't want to make the wrong investment decision because I'm trying to save a few money.
Although I'm trying to save cost, I don't want to be penny wise, pound foolish.
Thank you so much boss for your reply, I would be expecting your response. Exactly what happens when people get wrong batteries, please confirm the name of this battery. But be particular about getting premium or at least standard batteries. That’s how to make the right investment choice. |

omotoda: Discharge to 80% without Solar back up at your own risk ooo.But I.leave the experts to judge. My experience with AGM has shown that 50% DOD is ideal. Even most inverters, except the ones that have programmable settings default their Low Voltage cut off to 50% DOD You said most?, ohh I am not so sure of that, the cut off voltage for most inverters is around 11.5v. So, I have over the time stayed on 70%, which is dependent on my understanding of the battery in particular. And the load calculation, and rate of discharge, those intrinsic things are key to making your batteries last longer, But please let’s not get me wrong, 50%dod is generally accepted for many batteries, and is subjected to more scrutiny on the particular battery in question I greet you sir

Even most inverters, except the ones that have programmable settings default their Low Voltage cut off to 50% DOD Oh ok bro I understand you perfectly. While that’s been said, I agree it may be accepted 50%dod, but studying the battery you are going for and manufacturers detail on it is more key, than generalising the idea. Doing some more research, I think we may find it’s not bad, to peg at 70%, whats most important is the frequency of charge. I restate that it depends on the type of agm battery. Though in my post I mentioned tubular battery and not agm. For the case of a battery with specific details of using the battery.

omotoda: 10 hours back up how?
220*12=2640 watts He can only do 50% which is 1320watts
His load is 160watt so 1320/160= 8.25hours
I haven't factored in efficiency losses of inverter and energy loss of battery o!! While the idea of 50%dod is nice, you see 30% dod is nicer. Good agm/ tubular batteries come with 80%dod Over the years using 70%dod as not been an issue with good batteries. I think it depends majorly on the battery durability. Thanks boss |

Are they as equally reliable and strong like transformer inverters You see Hybrid inverter is a good choice The fact that most are transformerless doesn’t deter the durability, it even reduces energy loss. And also cost effective |

omotoda: Please experts in the house,I am in a dilemma here.Exactly on May 15,2020 I bought 2 units of Luminous Battery 200 ah and hooked them up to 4 units of 260 watts Felicity panels with a 60amp PowMr charge controller .The inverter is also Luminouv 1.5kva Zelios inverter. Last week the Luminous inverter had issues and I swapped it with Icell 1.5kva 12 volts inverter.During the day I do not have issues as the battery is slway charged. However I noticed that at night even with minimal load, the battery discharges fast even though there is utility light to support solar charging in the day.I dont want to believe the batteries are having issues already or is it because I used a 12volts inverter and had to parallel the two batteries?I am just confused because the batteries are just like 7 months and they have been connected to solar at set up. I never experienced this when I was using the Luminous inverter.
Please share your experience because its like these AGM batteries are no longer worth it! If you can confirm your batteries where really full And also you didn’t recently add more loads It may be your batteries are not so good anymore. Confirm their strength. It may also not be so Please note, your battery also may not be fully charged, this is the most obvious issue Because for example 4 200 watts panels connected in series to a 24v battery system before and now it’s connected to a 12v system doesn’t mean it’s will supply 800 watts it’s was supplying to charge the 24vdc battery system. Scc have their configurations, it may only accept the half of the total watts a 24vdc System will accept for a 12vdc. Then in the long run it’s not charging the battery full. Confirm your battery is full then run it as before. And if not, your icell Power Inverter also may need to be checked, to know the charge limit, check I think it can be configured do well to confirm the charge limit. Either parallel or serial, if a battery bank is full it should perform same way. Except there are too many losses in the Inverter. |

Pochettino: 2 TVs 1 fan Home theatre 6 energy saving bulbs Laptop
These should do lets assume your tv's 100 watts each, which may be very much lesser if its a led tv x2 - 200w 1 fan - 70w home theatre; please confirm the wattage of this, 6 energy saving bulb- 120w (assuming 15w for each) laptop - 70w 460w in total excluding the home theatre ( confirm the wattage of your home theatre, an average home theatre may be 1000w ) So if we say we you exclude the home theatre and your total load is about 500W to run this for 10hrs you may need 2.5kva inverter ; 48v ( 4, 200ah) batteries 14hrs backup but if you are to run this average load 300 watts ( obviously you may not put on everything at once) you can go for 2.5kva 24v (2,200ah) - 11hrs |
Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by unicmarket: 10:25am On Dec 23, 2020 |
Pochettino: 1. Don't bother about my load. Just 2kva capacity should do the job because a 2kva gen does it currently.
2. For batteries, I expect the person seting up the inverter to know the most efficient one that can support a 2kva inverter & last at least 10 hours on a full charge.
I put up my needs there so whoever is doing it knows what it entails. like Ojeysky said, the fact that your generator can power it doesnt equal to the load you are using, getting an inverter or batteries for the duration of time you are talking about will need specific load - capacity calculations, say you mention the number of fans, tv ... you intend to power can then give your prospective installer a heads up; else some person could just randomly give you a size quote and in the long run. you may be disappointed |

debeey87: The inverter is 24v DC. My observation from the display info is that on generator, the voltage never gets to 24v. It keep fluctuating between 23-23.7v, frequency is higher than 50hz usually 51hz, mains supply is between 220-230v.
What can be done to fix the low voltage issue from the Gen. Could it be the size of the wire I am using for the supply? How many kva is your Inverter? How many kva is your generator? You could also confirm the frequency of your gen, is ur giving stable frequency or a distortion in supply of power, please confirm this, so you can be safe, and not eventually destroy the “Charge part” of your Inverter box |
