What is an Hybrid Inverter

An Hybrid Inverter, is an Inverter that both as in it a solar charge controller and also normal (permit me to say, NEPA) or grid power. So instead of buying an Inverter and a solar charge controller seperately, this one as both all in one.


It has its merits and demerits though.

A nairalander called us one beautiful morning and was really unhappy, An engineer previously installed 4 solar panels on His roof connected to His Hybrid Inverter, But the controller as refused to charge the batteries, this was really devastating for Him( after such an investment; falling into the wrong hands, makes the adventure scary).

We are not saying there may not be issues; here we say the issues should be resolvable or at least the installer should carry the problem of the client on His head and ensure it is fixed; many installers may just run off when there are problems; this is not good at all.

Staying with the customer through the thick and thin is what we call Business.

We sent an engineer there and corrected the issue of concern; got an Original product then boom; His Inverter was fixed, we kept calling client to note that the fixed or new system works properly and appropriately, ( note; some client sef no they try, when things get resolved they just forget to revert back to the engineer, I understand it’s the euphoria of joy sha)

To cut the Long Story short, He now uses the new system.

Please see he image below to confirm, the rating for 1hp polystar Inverter is a 2kva generator.
Obviously it’s not appropriate to use 1.5kva luminous on it, most importantly due to what we call the peak power( this peak power may lasts for few secs) when you put on any devices it uses peak power, then suddenly goes back to running power; by this I mean, if you have a 1hp ac, it can shoot up to about 2hp at start up then balance back to 1hp running state. That time it shoots up, it may damage the Inverter.

Getting the most out of your Inverter system

1. Ensure you don’t Overload
2.Ensure you confirm Original batteries in the market before buying
3. Buy Inverters with not too low, low voltage cut off point in order to save battery life span
4. Ensure all connections of appliances are properly connected with no lose connections
5. Ensure the Generator you use to charge is bigger in KvA and also supplies pure 50hz power( stable supply)
6. Ensure you allow periodic maintenance from your vendor or installer, so as to monitor and save you from unnecessary cost of repaires
7. Go for quality products rather than inferior or “just good enough” products (trust me, it will save you more on the long run.

Can I leave my Inverter on all the time?

Obviously, it is important that safety must be practiced and with that in consideration, there are some systems that you may have any to power even if you are not available at that time, probably an office wants to power a router so as not to get the network down, or power some other devices that just must be on 24/7, in this case your Inverter must be on. Where the contention is for this kind of system is the process and the validity of your installation and the professionalism of the installer.

A lose connection can cause a whole lot of problems especially when the owner or user is not around, so it’s pertinent that the installation be properly done and the choice of Inverter and other materials of equipments be carefully considered.

1) Can a regular solar charge controller work or effectively charge tabular and GEL batteries ?
2) Can I get 50 AH of brands like Luminous/Mercury ( good brands in Nigeria ) ? Am Willing to consider between 50 AH and 75 AH values also.
3) If No. 2 is possible, where can I get them ?

answers to your questions
1) When you mean a regular Solar charge controller, i assume you mean a charge controller that is average in performance, it will charge it but certainly not efficient and on the long run could shorten the life span of the battery or even damage it, by either charging too slow or too fast, some can be over voltage charging issues ( note, a charge controller may work seem it is working well for the first few months but on the long run you find out the battery was only trying to catch up with the flow, and later fail due to improper charging.)

2) You can get 65-75 ah batteries of good brands( anyway i will suggest you go for 100ah, since the market deals more on them, else go insearch of them)

Needed some expert advise. I have a 3 bedroom flat with 2 Flatscreens, 2 Home Theatres, 3 Fans, 2 decoders, 14 to 18 energy saving bulbs, 1 microwave and 1 blender. Loads not to be placed on inverter are water dispenser, kettle, heater and AC.

What type of inverter capacity and type should I be looking at?

Heard bad things about charging inverter batteries with a generator that they kill them, is there any fact in that?

What are the best brand out there? Colleague uses PRAG, are they any good?

For your power needs i will first and foremost advice you cut down on the following in order to spend less on your power
1. Microwave
2. Water Dispenser
3. Water Heater
4. AC ( if Optional)

this afore listed appliances are not always a good part of the alternative power plan since they consume a lot, but if its a need that it runs, why not you can go for a bigger sized inverter and battery capacity. but i will restrict my answer to the remaining loads.

First and foremost I will advice you cut down on your ORL Industrial Fans( it sure will use up so much energy), added to that you can buy a smaller less power consuming standing fan.

now on the size of your Inverter and Batteries :
as you posted, with what you have there is about 350 watts load you use so of max power of 500 watts

on your load it is standard expected that you use 2.5% of the size of your load as the inverter you are going for which in this case is 870 watts

Inverter size: 1 - 1.5Kva
Battery size : 200-220ah
appropriate.(minimum)

Incorporating solar panels is one thing you would really need to do, the panels generate you power as long as the sun is up, this size of system runs power in your home 24 hours; highly depending on the size of your battery bank though, and also on the efficiency of your batteries.

Many industries and Homes incorporating solar system are certainly enjoying the value, off course it depends on the type of engineer they consulted, ( I have issues with too many hit and run guys, just by observing how they placed the panels, like primary school students, that’s on a lighter note)

He had a 3kva inverter system already, he only we had to upgrade or integrate solar system.

with 2500 total wattage of Panels, Solar controller and installation cost, a total of N720,000
the good thing about it is Panels are a lifetime investment, with a standard warranty over 15 years.

Hi Nairaland, this place is sure for virtually all kinds of knowledge, I posted some months ago on Inverter-Solar- Batteries efficiency, I will be sharing some thoughts on what baffles me the way some so called installers just climb your roof start nailing and placing panels without prior technical and geological survey and plan for a system.


Going solar is not something you just venture into, so many persons make a lot of mistake paying unprofessional technicians to do a costing and just come over to fix the panels, while undermining the technicality behind it, the technician gets excited, “ chai the man don pay oo” He gets to tr market buys some cheap stuff then plug and boom you have solar. Thats a joke.

I once called a someone on phone enquiring concerning a Solar charge controller, and any time I ask Him how many “volts in series” , he replies with for instance “ na 5 panels fit work with am” they just do a count, but fail in technicality.

When you think of going Solar, you don’t think of making it a Secondary source of power, no, what you do when you go Solar is you generate your own electricity by yourself, it’s purpose is to become a primary source of power in most cases, as much as solar power is a clean energy, quark technicians are making it suffer a lot. So you invest in a solar system, and all that happens is you get lower than what you ever asked for.

“Na sweet mouth they get”. : they talk you into solar project they never intend to place your happiness a major priority but thier money.

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, on Thursday in Lagos lamented that lives of Nigerians have been so cheapened under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, calling for coming on board generation of new leaders to overhaul the system.

Soyinka made the call at the official launch in his Interventions VIII Series, titled: “Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodes? (Who keeps Watch over the Watchmen?), Gani’s Unfinished Business,” held at the Freedom Park, Lagos Island.

Soyinka, in reaction to a question on current occurrences in the country, said there were serious acts of mis-governance under Buhari’s administration, declaring that there were lots of unforced errors being committed by the present government.

“There are acts of mis-governance under this administration. There are unforced errors and acts that are considered being stupid; failure to secure lives; languages of self-excusing which were condemned in the past but resurfacing all over the place,” he said.

According to the Nobel Laureate, the Buhari administration glossed over intolerable degrees of bloodshed as if in a casual event or happening by accident, adding that there was also failure on the part of the administration to exact authority when and as at when due, a development he said had led to several killings in the country.
