Joe Igbokwe, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress, has criticized activist Aisha Yesufu for what he perceives as disrespectful behaviour towards the new national anthem.

Yesufu, known for her activism, refused to sing the national anthem “Nigeria we hail thee” at an event, opting to sit down while others stood up to honor the anthem.

In a video she posted on X on Friday, the co-convener of the BringBackOurGirls advocacy group, could be seen seen sitting while the new national anthem was being recited.

Captioning the video, she wrote: “#NotMyNationalAnthem.”

Reacting, on his Facebook page on Saturday Igbokwe criticized Yesufu’s behavior as “nonsensical” and warned that her actions may harm her and her family.

He wrote, “Aisha Yesufu cannot respect the National Anthem. Let us see where all the nonsensical behaviour will take her to. She may not understand the damage she is doing to herself and her family. Continue.”

President Tinubu signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law on Wednesday, restoring ‘Nigeria we hail thee’ as the national anthem.

Aisha Yesufu, a prominent supporter of the Labour Party and a well-known activist, has expressed her dissent towards the reintroduction of the old national anthem. In a video that has gone viral, Yesufu is seen refusing to recite the newly reinstated national anthem at a recent event, instead choosing to sit in protest.

The video, shared on her X page on Friday, May 31, shows Yesufu's public rejection of the revived national anthem. She emphatically captioned the post "#NotMyNationalAnthem", signaling her disagreement with the change.

This comes after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law, reinstating the old national anthem "Nigeria, We Hail Thee" and replacing the current "Arise, O Compatriots", which has been in use since the late 1970s.

A Nigerian man has reportedly been deported from Canada for k!lling a parrot within one month of relocating to the North American country. A Twitter user, @Dr Olusesan, who shared the story on Twitter, claimed the man inadvertently k!lled the parrot, and since the bird had a GPS tracker, it was easy to track him.

“Them deport person from Canada within one month on arrival because e go k!ll pet parrot wey wear GPS tracker. Like, are you blind?” Olusesam tweeted. Reacting to the tweet, a Twitter user identified as Aluko Olami narrated a similar incident in Qatar.


According to Aluko, a Nigerian man was also deported from Qatar in 2012 after being found guilty of k!lling a cat. “The same thing happened here in Qatar around 2012, One of our country man will just went out at midnight to kill cats to make soup.

He has been doing it so long before police get him one night. He was deported too.The funny thing is he was doing good job of around $3k at the time.” He wrote.
