Politics › Intercontinental Bank To Review Sacked Staff Severance Package by usbcable(op): 10:10pm On Feb 10, 2010
Disengaged workers of Intercontinental Bank Plc, who are agitating over their exit package may soon heave a sigh of relief as the bank's management has set in motion machinery to review their severance package.

Already details of the new deal have been worked out awaiting the approval of the board.
Speaking at a forum organized by the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), and its affiliate in the banking and insurance sector, the Association of Senior Staff of Banks Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI) last week, the managing director of the bank Mahmoud Lai Alabi, said the decision was taken in order to move the bank forward.
He however disclosed that none of the affected staff was qualified for gratuity going by the prevailing circumstances and that the bank may consider the option of releasing some of the benefits in cash.
Furthermore, Mr. Alabi promised that policy on staff loans and other entitlements will be worked out while the existing one will equally be reviewed.
In another development, Mr. John Aboh, Managing Director of Oceanic Bank, defending the bank' s recent staff cuts insisted that due process was followed in arriving at those that were affected as the bank had series of meetings with the Minister for Labour and the various unions representing the workers.
According to him, “we did not do anything extra ordinary”
He also bemoaned the poor state of the bank before the intervention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and added that but for this measure something different would have taken place in the nation's financial sector which he believed could have led to the untimely deaths of depositors occasioned by the possible liquidation of several banks in the country.
In his meeting with the senior labour officials, Mr. Arah Nebolisa , managing director of Afribank PLC said the bank has a history of good labour relationship with unions operating within its system. He pledged to continue on that path.
Earlier, the President General of TUC, Comrade Peter Esele, had informed the banks chiefs of the reasons for calling the meeting and hoped that the outcome would be respected by all.
Present at the meeting were ASSBIFI national president, Comrade Sanni Lassi, deputy national president Sunday Salako, and Javis Eremosele, general secretary

Johnnoo:
True! The way the agitators of the bill are going about it is not good. Why trying to lord it over the house that they must pass the bill, inasmuch as we know what it has to put in place when passed into law. Somehow its sounds intimidating, which every right thing man must reject. For goodness sake they(Legislators) have their ego to protect. Lets apply some element of DIPLOMACY in situations like this. . . wink
HOW?

SADLY,

THE OVER 1300 STAFF RECENTLY LAID-OFF IN INTERCONTINENTAL BANK WERE PAID ONLY FOUR MONTHS "BASIC" SALARY. NO ENTITLEMNET OR BENEFITS NO MATTER THE GRADE OR NUMBER OF YEARS OF SERVICE. MOST DINT EVEN GET ANYTHING CONSIDERING THE FACT THAT THEY HAD ONE FORM OF LOAN OR THE OTHER WITH THE BANK. OF WHICH THE BASIC(NOT FULL SALARY) CANT COVER FOR. THEY ARE NOW EVEN BEING ASKED TO COME AND PAY-UP.

AND HERE WE ARE THE FORMER MD's HAVE BILLIONS IN OTHER BANKS.

SO SAD embarassed embarassed embarassed embarassed embarassed embarassed embarassed
